Rick is a different interviewer than what artists have to put up with. Rick is not a journalist who has to do an interview with an artist he doesn’t like, or one that is full of himself, is provoking artists to get quotes to sell magazines or intentionally misquotes trying to cause a shitstorm for publicity. Rick is a musician himself and genuinely cares about the people he interviews and their art. It shows. And the artists see that. And then they let their guard down, because he is not one of the vultures they usually get.
Wow he mentioned Siousxie Siou as a melody inspiration. That woman needs the attention she deserves. It’s good to hear her name from someone like Maynard.
I really love the fact that no matter who Rick talks to...Frampton, PRS, Sting, or now, Maynard...every episode starts as an interview, and ends as a conversation between friends/musicians. Rick is so damn versatile, its fantastic.
💯% One of these days I’m going to (try to) make a list of the “sub-fields” of musical knowledge of which Rick Beato is an expert…but I am sure I would miss some or many including several that are on dimensions of which I’m not even aware yet…I mean this guy could interview John Williams in Berlin tomorrow and produce the same quality result!
Rick has made his bones in music and those he interviews get that. He asks questions that a musician would ask and then subtly mixes in a few questions that a friend would ask...it's just brilliant. Best interview of MJK I've ever seen...
Maynard isn’t just phenomenal song writer and singer, he’s an inspirational human being who doesn’t buy into the stereotypical ‘rock star’ life style. He does his own thing, he focuses on his passions regardless of how that sits with his music persona. He comes across as a confident, thoughtful, intelligent man who doesn’t have the usual demons many in his profession have battled with. Maynard and his music have been truly inspirational to me personally, given me strength in hard times and the confidence to follow my passions. Excellent interview Rick, cheers man.
When he was entering the 'rock star' lifestyle he was really into it. In the sense of depraved sex, narcissism and the latter. He talked about it a few times about it all coming on so fast and not knowing how to deal with it. The only reason the music existed, was because of said demons. Thankfully he's chilled out during the years into the fine intelligent man you speak of.
Touring and singing that long is he was a typical rockstar, he'd be dead, or his voice would be messed up. Thank God he knows enough how to take care of his incredibly delicate instrument - he even doesn't eat many hours before a show to maintain his sound. He cares more about his art than his personal preference to fk around as many stars moved into. He is quite an impressive artist and human. And he acknowledges that.
I love Tool. First saw them in 1993 at Lollapalooza. Dozens and dozens of shows since including leaving the US twice to see multiple shows in Europe and South America. I just bought tickets to see them play again in October. Maynard is a prick. I wouldn't want to meet him even if given the chance.
Look, I even haven't finished to watch the whole interview yet, and I can already say something based on what I just saw: as a huge MJK and Tool fan, I've literally never seen him so relaxed in an interview, and that says much about how rick can make simple yet very interesting questions. Wonderful job as always❤️
yeah, i am about to watch it. seen maynard in a few past interviews where i come out thinking what an arrogant a-hole. but he has helped create a ton of my favorite music so i give him a pass:-).
I think the biggest thing Rick has going for him is that when he breaks down artists songs he points out things the artist themselves didn’t realise, I think the artist respect that….and Rick unlike a lot of interviewer’s does not ask stupid irrelevant question….keep it up Rick….brilliant.
That's because Rick has the perspective of a music producer and music teacher. He has an understanding of music theory. That's very different from most interviewers that are usually journalists. Not many former music producers do what Rick does. Rick has found a niche on TH-cam that no one else is doing from a perspective of a former music producer.
The fact that Maynard was straightforward with all of his answers means a whole lot in terms of how great you are as an interviewer. As a fan of his, this was so welcome and is not typical for him. Thank you Rick, your love of music and respect, really shows.
I cannot tell you how much I love Maynard for starting his other bands. It has kept Tool Tool. Most bands change their sounds and piss off fans. Maynard got out his other creative avenues with other bands. As a lifelong diehard Tool fan that doesn’t like any other stuff Maynard does I am very grateful!
More in-depth Maynard interview than any I've found. Very cool, relaxed authentic conversation. It's like hanging with music nerds for an hour. Loved it.
It's wild hearing a legend like Keenan describe his songwriting process and how he tends to defer to other people when starting. It takes a lot of self-worth to take a backseat and trust others to do their thing, especially as the *frontman* of all of his projects. Quite a rare thing in this industry!
He gets a bad rap...I think he is entitled to be selective with who interviews him. I dont believe just you are a rock icon, you HAVE put yourself out there. You put out great music...and your fans could care less. That's the way I see it. You brought up a good point about taking a backseat. No "l" in team.
I've always thought of bands as "the lead singer's band" or "the lead guitarist's band". Tool is different. It's not Maynard Keenan's band; it's Danny Carey's, since he calls the shots. Maynard pitches up and asks "What can I contribute to this?"
Interviewers need to take notes. Probably the best Maynard interview to date. Great job Rick for asking such great questions, that was a juicy interview.
This is the best MJK interview I have ever seen. He can often be aloof and cryptic. In contrast, this felt like two people who respect one another having an open and earnest conversation. Wonderful work, Rick. You are a treasure.
This wins TH-cam for this month... Rick asks intelligent questions and then totally gets out of the way and brings out the best in Maynard's answers. Awesome conversation, great interview. Two very cool and amazing humans. More of this Rick!!
It's really embarrassing I'm not a freak but I love this man more than anyone will ever understand seen him live probably close to 15 times and I cry every time I hear his voice live amazing singer and how he handles his success and his personal life is such an inspiration for people
This is how you conduct an interview. You ask a question and then let the person answer and elaborate without interrupting. Rick thank you for another AWESOME interview. You’re worth your weight in guitar picks… gold guitar picks 😉
I love that Maynard mentions Siouxsie Sioux as an inspiration for good melody writing. She and the Banshees are so underrated and don't get the recognition that they are due.
I've seen many people mentioning how good she is here in the comments. I'm gonna check her out. I stumbled upon Tori Amos and My Dying Bride through comments from fans as well.
Maynard is usually a difficult beast to tame in interviews and it's been a while since I've seen him so comfortable and talkative. What a nice interview. Congrats Rick!
He’s speaking with somebody who writes music and understands every nuance of the method, and Rick asks open questions and allows guests to feel comfortable answering them which is a great interview style. I think Maynard just had an instant respect for Rick.
Rick is easily one of the, if not THE most respectful and insightful interviewer around. He never interrupts or oversteps, asks questions that we ALL want to know the answer(s) to, and is extremely passionate! So many times you will get an interviewer who just seems robotic and disinterested which ultimately turns the interview sour. Awesome job as always, Rick!
This interview is a new classic. Maynard is a serious and intense guy, and Rick is the perfect person to interview him on a serious level. You can see the mutual respect. You keep killing it, Rick! 👍
As a Arizonan born and raised. Everyone loves him, from what I've heard from multiple people who have met him, he's also a super down to earth, great to fans at all times and a real renaissance man.
Can confirm. Lived in Prescott Valley about 20 minutes from Jerome where his record and wine stores are I've had a couple friends meet him who've said the same.
Mr. Beato, This is probably one of the best interviews I've ever seen with a musician. I think my favourite part is that not only is it an insight into Maynard James Keenan, but also an insight into you. I also appreciated that it seemed like you obviously had a list of questions you wanted to ask, but you also "read the room", identified his mood, and what he wanted to talk about and shifted gears to match it. I was smiling the whole time because you all were just "waffling".
I can only imagine all the questions you'd like to have asked as a fan of MJK Rick, but you as a professional and cool interviewer had the discipline to keep it as you did. Thank you for all you do for music appreciation.
This is really amazing Rick. Derek trucks and now Maynard. Two of my very favorites that basically don’t do interviews. I can’t wait to see who’s next!
Really enjoyed the Matt Cameron interview, too. Did I hear you mention an interview with Kim Thayil? Dear God, I hope so. One of my Gibson SG heroes - right up there with Tony Iommi.
Thank you, Rick. Thank you!!! I've never seen such a candid and open interview with Maynard. And I've always wanted to hear more from him. This is bloody brilliant.
This is the absolute best interview that I've ever seen of MJK!!! He is very particular with his interviews and what info he shares. He must had mad respect for Rick Beato. Thank you to both of you for doing this!!!
Love that Rick can release educational/interview material on literally ANY style of music. Metal, Rock, Jazz, Classical, Pop, Progressive, Blues, Country, Instrumental etc. You name it, Rick can cover it, he can do it all.
Great interview! Maynard is so chill when he is close to his wine. This is probably the most he has ever talked about how he approaches music. Great stuff
God, regarding not only music, but creative processes in general, this is the coolest, most insightful interview I've ever listened to. I love it so much. It's inspiring af.
Right! - not too many interviews I listen to I know for fact I am going to listen to again - at least once - every single one of his are in that category!
Rick is probably the first interviewer I've seen that can get Maynard engaged. Even more than he was on Rogan. All of the guys in the band are pretty private. This is legendary, great job Rick!
@@drmlabs Yea, Joe isn't the best. I remember there was a period where Maynard refused to talk about music in interviews at all. I think it may have been because of the lawsuit. But I remember that he would only really talk about comedy, wine and jujitsu. I think that last Rogan interview was Rogan's fault for sure.
@@drmlabs I 'member too. It was one of the first times I've ever seen Maynard actually want to talk about Tool and Rogan just breezed right past it haha.
How hard must be to pull such a fruitful interview with Maynard so "casually", especially knowing you admire him. These are gold, Rick, you're making a huge legacy for music.
@@Vool2go No worries. By the way, that is a beauty of a Jewfish. Over here in Rotterdam we do a lot of streetfishing, catching pike, zander, roofblei and perch (European stripy)
Like so many others in this comment thread, MJK is like an idol to me. I have literally watched every interview he’s ever done and nothing comes close to this in terms of how much he was relaxed and really opened up and seemed to enjoy the conversation. Amazing job, Rick. Congratulations on nailing a solid interview with a modern music legend.
Thank you, Rick. It is really rare, if ever achieved by an interviewer, to get onto a level with Maynard. There was almost no rejecting, ridiculing, burying in sarcarm or whatsoever by him. Instead, this became an intimate and genuine interview. That's an achievement I am really grateful for.
Rick, you are hands down the BEST interviewer relating to the music industry. Your background as well as a fan appreciation standpoint bring a unique angle to the interview. I think this is recognized and appreciated by the artists. Your interviews let us have the chance to really sit with our favorite musical artists and experience them as we never have before as they open up on their respective creative processes. Another great interview.
I love that they actually talk pretty in depth. I don't believe I've ever heard Maynard open up in such a good mood, so relaxed and articulate as this. Great video!
The musical references Maynard makes, shows his knowledge and understanding of what goes into making good music. It also speaks of a man that’s been humbled and knows there are many great musicians that came before him, and hopefully more to come after.
it's so nice to listen to a Maynard interview when it is with someone he wanted to interview him. for Maynard to take the time during this busy season shows that he must respect Rick.
I'm about 17 minutes into this and keep marveling to myself about how one of my favorite musicians is sitting down and being interviewed by the single best appreciator and analytical music theory minds on TH-cam (and of course elsewhere). Not to mention that you are quite the musician yourself. Have enjoyed so much from both of you and I would hate to even call it "content" because what the two of you produce is better than that. Really awesome video and I'm excited for the experience you got to have and the bump this will surely give to your already stellar channel. What Makes This Song Great? has consistently been my favorite TH-cam series and the breadth of music you cover and the intelligent and experience driven deep dives into music you do are really unlike anything else I've come across. Congrats Rick and all the best going forward!
The best interview I've ever heard. Great questions that didn't waste time, but lead to meaningful discussion..probably why Maynard did this, he knew it wasn't a waste of his time. Long may he continue to do all the magic he does
Wow, Beato got a lot of good stuff out of Maynard. Maynard is notoriously tough to interview. I guess maybe because Beato is so straight up enthusiastic about music, and willing to really dig into it, he is able to get Maynard to really engage. Or maybe I'm all wrong. But good interview all the same!
I agree, and I think Maynard himself has great expectations about who Beato is as an interviewer. The last time I saw something close to this was the one Lars Ulrich made to Maynard 4 years ago
how is he tough to interview? From what I've heard he speaks freely and honestly, I'd say the tough part is most interviewers are blowhards or clueless when it comes to meaningful topics I guess?
A lot of interviewers tend to ask the exact same questions over and over again, which can be annoying. Rick kind of starts out the same when he opens with his "Why three bands?" line of questioning, but he starts going into different places that allow Maynard to go over topics that haven't been done to death. He also has very specific technical knowledge about both music and instruments which I'm sure is very refreshing, like when they started talking about the Fairlight keyboard, something your average Rolling Stone interviewer isn't going to be able to discuss.
I'm fascinated with Maynard and his work ethic . Tobias Forge is another example of one man keeping at it until he hits his stride and his creation comes to fruition .
Tool has been around a while, but Puscifer has not. Perhaps it’d not have been a point that people would take issue with, had you mentioned them instead of Tool. Either way, I get your point, and I feel you. Most people don’t continue to appreciate new music/new bands past a certain age (I think 30 is about right.. actually I think there’s studies that back this up), and it’s kind of a shame because there are so many good younger bands (and older bands/artists doing new things) who are making incredible music that’s just as impressive as anything from the musical/genre lineage that they’re existing in, and influenced by. There’s also a lot of crap, sure, but that’s no excuse to write off newer music altogether, and a lot of people do…
This is a great interview. He goes into such detail about road life and show preparation that most musicians don’t talk about. It’s so human and relatable.
I'm only 25 mins into this interview and I'm going to say, this is probably the best Maynard interview I've ever seen. He's totally relaxed, the questioning is on point and seem totally in his comfortable zone.
The brilliance of Tool live, IMO, is the utter suppression of ego the four artists demonstrate. With the level of virtuosity, artistry, and decades of experience Tool has now, its breath taking to attend their performances and feel this incredible thing that is so unique to these four guys! And easily the best fans each time ive attended. Entire audience of mature, glowing, and loving fans. A musical temple where no one is separate or above or worshipped
Maynard is very acerbic. Ask the wrong question, set the wrong tone and he will eviscerate the interviewer. Rick just gets him talking. Simply amazing.
I don't know much about Mr Keenan. I listened to some Tool in the nineties. In regards to your comment, he looked to have the urge to be cynical a couple of times, but instead chose gratitude and humility. That's the wine maker, and ageing as you do.
@@shockmarkets7384 There's a video on TH-cam of him giving retorts to stupid questions, although one you can see the gears turning, but in the end he gave a straight answer because it was an 11 year old.
this is the most casual and comfortable ive seen Maynard in an interview, he actually seemed to enjoy it! Definitelty helped let loose some of those more commonly cagey studio/recording/composing topics. Much appreciated Rick, great job! 👏 👌😁
I could not click the link for this interview fast enough when I saw the notification come across my iPad!! MJK is simply one of the most talented rock musicians ever and his music (TOOL mostly and Puscifer) has been a huge part of my life since 1994. Thank you for this interview Rick and Maynard!! Spiral Out 🌀
Obviously you like Lateralus: I think it’s the best album Maynard’s ever done, and I particularly mean his lyrics and performance on that album. It’s also my favorite Tool album, musically, but I really do consider the messaging coming from Maynard on that album to be the first “sacred text” to ever deeply impact me late in my teenage years. There aren’t many albums I can point to, and say that they had deep philosophical impact on me, like life altering, but Lateralus is one of them. I know Tool fans can be obnoxious with over praising Tool, but with that album, it certainly hits me deeply in every way, from the music, to Maynard’s beautiful expression his powerful words. To this day, over the 20+ years I’ve aged with those lyrics, I continue to reappraise, and have deeper understanding of the concepts explored in the lyrics, particularly as I more deeply explore my mind/soul/body in meditation/spiritual practice.. I’ll leave it at that, lest I become the obnoxious Tool fan… Spiral Out, indeed! 🌀♾
@@nikolademitri731 I’m going to dig deeper into it bc of what you’re saying here. It will be fun because it is something I know absolutely nothing about…like how he mused that he didn’t discover Led Zeppelin until much later… that can be said for me and Tool, which is right here & now! Radio songs are all I know…but my journey started that way into many musical directions, including the Grateful Dead, Metallica, Dream Theater, so many more. I started perhaps very basic (but definitely not bad!) - Black Sabbath, the Beatles and the Beach Boys I would say were my top three that really got me into it and I spun most of their records for the first several years (I’m 58)…so much to listen to, so little time…
The "space" they were talking about him leaving in his melodies is precisely what I love about how Maynard works his lyrics into the music. It's unlike any other singers I can think of
I saw Tool twice this year, and I was stunned by the power and consistency of Maynard’s vocals. Just as good as when I first saw them in 2006. Maynard explaining his preparation for each gig therefore made a lot of sense. This dedication to vocal quality is really appreciated. 😎
Saw Tool twice this year and once before covid and you are so right about the vocals. He sounds amazing. Sounded better during the Lateralus tour, but for someone who dealt with covid twice, he sounds badass. He pulled off the Grudge scream! This dude 🔥🔥🔥
Same. In total I've seen them 10 times but that Bonnaroo show was different. They were all having a blast. Maynard wasn't hiding in the shadows at all. He was in full on Rockstar mode, talking to the crowd and melting face. Best performance of theirs I've ever seen.
@@rubaidaallen2764 Oh yes, I've seen Tool twice, in 06 and 07. Yet to hear The Grudge live, but hearing a live bootleg of it from an 01 show, first time hearing it ever (as I was new to Tool music at that time), the song blew me TF away! Just a darkness and deep emotion in his voice. Almost shaman like. As I took in the lyrics and music, it was THAT SCREAM that shook my soul and inner psyche. I was literally shaking my head back and forth and started to shed tears, as if all the grudges and anger that I had ever held inside was released in a mad fury. Then he goes "Let go. Let go. Let go..." as it builds into that intense climax and coda. With the bad ass Carey drums and triplets at the end. Wow! It was quite an experience. It was like an exorcism of my inner demons finally released. And in my mind, I ended up forgiving a lot of people in my past that did me wrong or screwed me over. I still get emotional when I hear it. But yes, again, that scream was the capper! Many other songs get me emotional and fire me up in a positive way. Think Drop D tuning can really hit ones soul deep. Tool music in many regards is like musical psychotherapy.
@@bpkliveproductions There's nothing like seeing these guys live. My goodness so fn good. There are certain songs that are played live that send you to another dimension, another realm. The Grudge, Reflection, Schism, Descending and Fear Inoculum. For me these songs are the most Tool. There is something super therapeutic about their songs. Absolutely 100% agree.
@@RickBeato I think I’m being scammed through the comment section. Have you heard about this? Someone is claiming to be you and says I won a Gibson SG 450 plus.. Can you confirm it’s not you?

i’ve watched this twice already - i’ve been infatuated (like so many others) with Maynard’s delivery, so in depth and cerebral. I’m amazed with his candor yet in depth explanations. You rarely get to tap into the world of Maynard - yet here is a moment of dialogue where we as fans can hear Maynard in his element. What a treat this is!!
I got to hang out with Maynard backstage in his dressing room at the Bill Graham Civic in SF before a Tool show in 2014, he was showcasing his wines to special select people in the industry, and I was lucky enough to get in. Was a really fascinating and surreal experience, to have Maynard pouring you wine in his very private domaine. He is as knowledgeable about wine as he is about music. And then we got to stay for the show! I still have the backstage pass. Great interview Rick!!
I have always been a Tool fan and I have seen a few brief interview spots with Maynard, but after viewing this I have to say he seems like a fascinating dude and a really decent human being. Rick, you must have had so much fun with this conversation!
Such a great interview. Long time fan and I've never seen Maynard so open and willing to answer questions seriously without putting up a wall. So refreshing as a Tool/ APC/ Puscifer fan
Honestly Rick, I love your interviews with famous musicians. We get a lot of insight into who they are and why they do what they do so well. Thumbs up as always Rick 👍
Great job interviewing, Rick! Very hard to interview someone so eclectic and introverted like Maynard and you navigated it beautifully. So grateful for you, you're the rock of the industry!
As a longtime MJK fan, I've not seen a better interviewer sitting across from him in any of the few interviews he has given. You studied him and prepared and teased out great insight from him with a delicate touch. A masterwork. Very well done.
Dude! My total admiration to MJK. Him and Bowie saved me from depression during 2020 and i thank them both for that. Bedlamite brought me back to life 🙏
Wow 2 such lovely authentic artists in the classical sense. Casual insights from 2 masters of learning and growing through pain and fear. Too them it’s normal but too still be so self aware and sincere to focus on the now and it’s effects on when. Genius interview and a tip of the hat to humanity, science, history and creativity. God bless you both and All the Works of your Hands!!!!
I've been a massive Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer for as long as I can remember, and I can honestly say this is the single best interview of Maynard James Keenan ever recorded.
What is a good Puscifer song? A Perfect Circle are great, I especially love their live albums, Tool is the Best Band in History! But I never "got" puscifer.
Anema is my favorite Tool album love the ups and downs of the emotional rollercoaster and Mer de Non is simply heart wrenching. Take all the time you need, just keep making these delicious ear candies
"There's something kind of sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety..." Rick giving us an amazing interview from an amazing musician!
Rick, I have always been impressed by your musical knowledge and ability. This is by far the very best musicians interview I have ever seen. You are the musicians musician! Bravo!
Bravo Rick. As much as I love MJK's interviews where he trolls the interviewer for 5-10 minutes, this was awesome. I'm not sure you can find anything out there where Maynard goes deeper into his process, thinking, and even feelings, than you accomplished here.
I typically don't listen to interviews of bands, read articles on them or otherwise follow them. I'm more interested in their artwork and in some ways I think that is what Maynard and the boys were about in the early days of Tool. I didn't care that they said that they were into Lachrymology back in the day. Because I don't follow interviews I assume that was a joke back in the day but I think that my initial reaction was what they were after. Think for yourself. Interviews are all too often about the interviewer rather than the interviewee and THAT is what, I presume, Maynard was against (along with the idea that most singers shouldn't overly influence any fan).
So happy to have found this. After losing my husband and best friend since 1997 a few months ago I first tried to avoid music and then found my sanity and my way to keep living through music. Tomm night I finally get to see Puscifer live. Our last show together just days before losing him was seeing TOOL together finally: Music is so powerful and I know you all get that, but if ever lost find the strength to turn to it. My whole life somehow live music has found me and pulled me back. Bless and love all…

Serious question: Do you have difficulties following a conversation?
An expert interview. He let the guest talk - no interruptions, and did not force topics. Well done.
Rick asks a good question and lets the interviewee talk. Simple as that. So many so-called interviewers can't seem to do it.
Kurt Cobain would have been very fond of Rick Beato!
Rick is asking the questions he would like to know and he's interested in knowning how his peers approach music. Result is amazing interviews.
I agree the best interviews, are when a artist interview another artist. Much respect for both of them.
Rick is a great interviewer for great musicians, because Rick is a music producer...not a reporter.
What a great interview

i will second that. MJK is usually a bit clandestine. To see him so at ease here is amazing.
@Hugh J. Null on JRE though he talked more shop and things that were less personal. Beato really brought out the real person.
This interview is much different than JRE. I loved how chill he was.
Also makes it about the guy next to him to going to other relationships. Respectful.
Are you kidding his EGO is through the roof !
Comments like this are goofy as hell
Well, he is in his winery or resturaunt serving his wine!... lol
Ditto that! This was set up really smart by Rick....or Maynard, maybe both lol

@@deketk just finished it and yeah, it was a great interview. maynard avoided a lot of his normal sarcasm.
A Fellow very educated musician is interviewing him not some douche bag reporter Rick is extremely intelligent
I think the biggest thing Rick has going for him is that when he breaks down artists songs he points out things the artist themselves didn’t realise, I think the artist respect that….and Rick unlike a lot of interviewer’s does not ask stupid irrelevant question….keep it up Rick….brilliant.
Yes!! It's the stupid ass kissing questions that annoy me. This is how to conduct an interview 101 excellence. Love it!
That's because Rick has the perspective of a music producer and music teacher. He has an understanding of music theory. That's very different from most interviewers that are usually journalists.
Not many former music producers do what Rick does. Rick has found a niche on TH-cam that no one else is doing from a perspective of a former music producer.
That’s what’s up

Please Rick, interview Danny Carey too! Just how can he think of so unique rhythms?

I used to play fooseball with Danny Carey.
That would be awesome!
Lol apparently it takes him a _while_ 😝

Rick is the most honest interviewer out there, and that honesty has earned him the trust of people like Sting and Maynard. Very cool.
Maynard has a wealth of musical
intellect. Fantastic! He’s so enigmatic and delicious

You are a treasure.
when he respects the interviewer he shuts off the troll and gets comfortable.
Rick ask real questions and Maynard picks up on it right away and gets into it.
10 seconds in and my first thought is I MUST GET THAT SHIRT 😂
This wins TH-cam for this month... Rick asks intelligent questions and then totally gets out of the way and brings out the best in Maynard's answers. Awesome conversation, great interview. Two very cool and amazing humans. More of this Rick!!

Rick thank you for another AWESOME interview. You’re worth your weight in guitar picks… gold guitar picks 😉
Couldn’t believe my eyes when I got this notification. Rick’s legend continues to grow!
I love that Maynard mentions Siouxsie Sioux as an inspiration for good melody writing. She and the Banshees are so underrated and don't get the recognition that they are due.

This interview is a new classic. Maynard is a serious and intense guy, and Rick is the perfect person to interview him on a serious level.

You keep killing it, Rick! 👍
As a Arizonan born and raised. Everyone loves him, from what I've heard from multiple people who have met him, he's also a super down to earth, great to fans at all times and a real renaissance man.

Mr. Beato,
This is probably one of the best interviews I've ever seen with a musician.

Rick has "conversations". I love the way he is so patient to let these people speak without interrupting them. All the best Rick!
Music? Did you watch the video? All they talked about was wine, heirloom wheat, and jiujitsu ohwaitdifferentshow
MAYNARD! I love that you’re down with Tool, Rick. So many musicians our age stopped growing musically before they even turned 30. More power to you!
Tool has been around for a long time.
Maynard is nearly 60 himself, so hardly some young upstart. He’s been doing this for a long time.
There’s also a lot of crap, sure, but that’s no excuse to write off newer music altogether, and a lot of people do…
I became completely disenchanted with music by the time I was 28-30. I think it’s more common than you think, unless you struck gold

Wow. I think that was the finest interview of Maynard James Keenan I've ever watched. It was relaxed, fun, informative and telling. Kudos Mr. Beato!
The brilliance of Tool live, IMO, is the utter suppression of ego the four artists demonstrate.

Your ipad! My gosh thats huuuuge

Hello, how are you doing? Nice meeting you here
I saw Tool twice this year, and I was stunned by the power and consistency of Maynard’s vocals.

Maynard also had a thing for jujitsu because he brought it up for no reason.
Big Tool fan here from South Africa! Awesome stuff and looking foward to watching this interview!
So happy to have found this. After losing my husband and best friend since 1997 a few months ago I first tried to avoid music and then found my sanity and my way to keep living through music.
Tomm night I finally get to see Puscifer live.
Our last show together just days before losing him was seeing TOOL together finally:
Music is so powerful and I know you all get that, but if ever lost find the strength to turn to it. My whole life somehow live music has found me and pulled me back.
Bless and love all…
Hello, how are you doing? Pleasure meeting you here..
Great job cracking the enigma that is Maynard, fascinating interview, what a treat 🤘
