This is what "importance" sounds like. So grand and enthralling... If I heard this in the distance I would feel as if I were missing out on something that clearly should not be missed if I didn't move towards it.

I saw the UK premiere of this performed and co-commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by my friend Kristjan Järvi. This was Steve Reich’s first full orchestral work in over 30 years. And it was Kristjan who convinced him to do it. Glad he did. Masterpiece!
This piece has much more in common with his more recent ensemble works- Reich/Richter and Runner, for example- than with his earlier orchestral work from the 1980s.
I am certain that music is a gateway to higher states, especially when hearing arrangements like this. How can anyone conceive it, unless you register somewhere on the crazy scale. 14 minutes in is sooo amazing...
Some of the melodic runs do remind me of Zappa, along with the way Reich puts them over contrasting, slightly "outside" harmonic backgrounds. Are they maybe pentatonic melodies, such as FZ frequently played in his guitar solos? And for at least one piece - "The Black Page" - FZ used Reich's frequent device of four tonal centers a minor third apart; they probably both picked that up from the tonal axis system found in Bartok. Apparently it also often appears in Brazilian jazz.

You don't have to be crazy, you just have to think musically in a different way than most. Listening to a lot of Bartok and Stravinsky helps, too.

For me it is a better work than "The Four Sections". Although it is very similar to Runner, Reich/Richter and other works.
