David Borden - Three Preludes and Fugues for Two Pianos (animated graphical score)
David Borden composed a set of twelve preludes and fugues between 2011 and 2017. This video features MIDI realizations of the final three pairs in the set dedicated to composer Pauline Oliveros, musicologist Xak Bjerken, and MIT physicist Neil Gershenfeld respectively.
Some of the pieces feature Borden's idiosyncratic style of counterpoint influenced by minimalism, while others incorporate elements of chromaticism and jazz harmony.
0:27 Prelude and Fugue No. 10 in D Lydian (for Pauline Oliveros)
7:28 Prelude and Fugue No. 11 in E Mixolydian (for Xak Bjerken)
11:40 Prelude and Fugue No. 12 in A Aeolian (for Neil Gershenfeld)

David Borden - The Continuing Story of Counterpoint, Part 8 (animated graphical score)
มุมมอง 47011 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part Eight of 'The Continuing Story of Counterpoint' was composed a year after the sad disbanding of the last all-Moog Mother Mallard group. With the minimal amount of equipment I had left, I set up a temporary studio in a vacant firing range at Cornell University during the summer of 1979 and completed Part Eight surrounded by spent shells and perforated targets. It was a difficult time during...

มุมมอง 31511 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part Eleven of 'The Continuing Story of Counterpoint' is dedicated to the late pianist Edmund Niemann and numerologically takes its content from his birthdate, 12/25/1945. There are two musical elements: chords and a melodic idea. The duration of the chords and the number of notes in the melody derive from the date. A large portion of this piece is taken up with canons at the unison or octave t...

Marjan Mozetich is a Canadian composer best known for his 1997 violin concerto 'Affairs of the Heart'. Originally a writer of avant-garde and serial music, beginning in the late 1970s Mozetich shifted his compositional style into a kind of lyrical postminimalism which eventually became full-blown neoromanticism in the mid-1980s. This video compiles a number of compositions written during that t...

Absolutely brilliant piece of music and nicely performed. I bought the album when it was released and I had never heard of Steve Reich, but anything on ECM was bound to be good. It's mesmerizing and never seems repetitive. I had bought some albums of minimalist music by other composers, but this really stands above the rest. Reich's melodic sensibility is really wonderful and I consider him one of the greatest contemporary composers. All the live performances are really close to the ECM studio version.

This music touches deeply. I was listening to it while floating on a tube in a swimming pool looking up at the sky in the woods. I was fortunately by myself and could completely merge with the music. I cried and laughed and cried again. Have not experienced such deep unlocking of feelings inside of me in a long time. It is truly a masterpiece.

First Movement: "My Son, mu Son chosen and beloved Share your wounds with your Mother And because, dear Son, I have always carried You in my heart, And always served You faithfully Speak to Your Mother, to make her happy, Although You are already leaving me, my cherished hope". (Lamentation from the collection of medieval passion poems from Benedictine Monastery of St. Cross on Łysa Góra, Poland. Second half of the 15th century. Author unknown). Second Movement: "No, mother, do not weep. Most chaste Queen of Heaven Support me always. Hail Mary, full of grace". (Prayer inscribed on the wall of cell no. 3 in the basement of "Palace" - the Gestapo's headquarters in Zakopane, Poland; Beneath was the signature: Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna, 18 years old, imprisoned since 26 September 1944"). [Helena Błażusiak survived torture without betraying her comrades and then she managed to escape from deportation train to nazi concentration camp. She died in 1999]. Third Movement: "Where has he gone My dearest son? Perhaps during the uprising The cruel enemy killed him Ah, you bad people In the name of God, the most Holy, Tell me, why did you kill My son? Never again Will I have his support Even if I cry My old eyes out Were my bitter tears to create another River Oder They would not restore to life My son He lies in his grave and I know not where Though I keep asking people Everywhere Perhaps the poor child Lies in a rough ditch and instead he could have been lying in his warm bed Oh, sing for him God's little song-birds Since his mother Cannot find him And you, God's little flowers May you blossom all around So that my son May sleep happily". (The folk song from the period of the Silesian Uprisings of 1919-1921).
