You are SO correct. With the price increases, people are looking for alternative, less expensive bags! Jess, please say that again. Just because something is more expensive does not necessarily mean it’s better quality! Yes, it could change again. Great video Jess! 😊

Handbags are luxury items , not investments. If any luxury items brings anxiety to my life, I get rid of it. These things need to enhance my life , not bring me more stress. Life is stressful enough.

A good reason why people are focussed on accessories is the casualisation of dress and decline in fabric and construction quality.
In the old days women would wear a hat, gloves to go shopping at Myers for instance. You were uncouth if you didn't do this but they'd have just one or two handbags but a lot of dresses. It was necessary to have slips and petticoats to give the skirts the necessary volume and avoid clinging to the body.
Jeans have been the defining change, along with shorts and also sneakers.
So the easy way to dress up an outfit is to have a bougie bag.
Also stretch materials, athletic wear these are amazingly casual and people just don't go for discomfort in clothes anymore for the sake of appearances. Exception is evening wear.
I think the casual wear revolution is here to stay and there will remain an interest in accessories.
But what is changing is the pretence of being wealthy when clearly you are not.
Demographically there has never been a greater extreme of wealth and the middle class is shrinking. Real wages of ordinary workers are declining overall.
People have woken up and either gone the fake route or just limiting designer brands to a few rather than a whole lot.
In the face of this, the big brands are ramping up exposure to the youth market with designs constantly changing to maintain interest and trends are driven by big names in popular culture. Raising prices to make themselves evermore elite has lost any connection to quality.
It's been the preloved market for me all the way! I don't care that most of the brands I have are unknown, I have the quality for amazingly low prices and that makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

How many people would buy bags if social media was gone? I feel that's the major push. It can create fomo, or the thoughts that so many people have them, and that you want to keep up with others. I have a few luxury items, but they are all made by hand from Spain, Colombia, and Italy. No labels, amazing quality, and we're more approachable for cost per wear. Loved this topic, Jess!

I'm careless with my clothes and would go mad if my expensive piece of clothing got stained or damaged. In the end, a 2k bag is more versatile than a 2k coat. When I scroll through a sale, the clothes with a comfortable price tag for me are all made from polyester. How can these brands charge what they do for this cheap fabric?

  • @AnUrbanGypsy

We used to be seen out and about so much more in the 70s & 80s and would get lots of wear from things - those times have gone. Today, most people drive or get Uber, fashion, home decor, food etc., purchased online and home delivered, work from home - fashions have relaxed to reflect this. Social media has opened up a world where we can interact with people outside of our socio-economic background too. We no longer covert what our neighbours and friends have but are open to aspirational influence from people who in reality we are worlds apart from and would never get chance to interact with ordinarily, leading some to make some poor choices financially. How many own bags they’re too wary to take out? I guess bags will always fit so they seem like a good investment.

I prefer to invest in properties and investment vehicles that are giving passive income etc.
However I love to see hauls of these luxury bags that is not loud like logos that are in your face.
At the end of the day they are just bags.
Good quality bags that can last for years.
I do have some of these bags - not branded but v well made from Italy and Spain.

  • @two_another
    @two_another ปีที่แล้ว +5

I love that you always offer all types of opinions and even de-incentivize people to consume, which is something a lot of luxury TH-camrs NEVER do. What you said about the “full look” is so true as well. It feels like people invest into the shoes and the bag and everything else is normal. Which can be a look sometimes, but I think routinely it just shows that you spent it all on a bag instead of making a cohesive look. I’m personally very into “the look” because I love fashion as an artform and I feel like a full look immerses you into this vibe that can’t be achieved with just the bag. I feel like RTW is not as popular with most brands in Western countries. I feel like Asian markets and new money wealthy people are the main consumers of RTW. Regardless I sometimes do have second thoughts of having such a big collection because I also do think a LOT about the robbery aspect because I’m a very paranoid person lol so maybe having all of these assets was not the smartest decision but I wouldn’t say I regret it as fashion is something I love and maybe the risk is worth the love? To me at least. I will say get insurance on your bags though. Expensive but it’s worth it. Sometimes you can get market price value if something happens. I insure every bag I have now and it’s honestly expensive but worth it for peace of mind.

In my mid 50s and yes it was not typical to own so many luxury items when I was in my 20s. Many folks had one, if any, and wore it to death, and all the time. These are the beat up LVs that we see on the resale vintage market now. Most of my peers (cpas) invested in a jewelry set (in Honolulu it was either a Hawaiian jewelry set or from a place called Mings). Many of us did do Ferragamo and Bally flats or with the short stacked heel. Also agree about humidity. It’s ok if you regularly use your bags but if you have any sit stored that can be an issue.

    • @latigresseNYC

^^^This! I'm in my early 60s and the emphasis was never on amassing luxury items in the 70s and 80s, though the late 80s was when things started to shift a bit. It had been more on quality, and one didn't need to buy designer labels to get that. But if one was able to buy such things, you could be sure about the quality. My mother had a friend who used to clean out her closets 1-2x per year and give us her cast-offs, so she could make room for new purchases. Many of these items still had their price tags attached. All this stuff came from Bergdorf Goodman, Bonwit Teller, Saks, etc., and the quality was top of the line.

I resonate with your points Jess! The only thing I'd comment on is you can't tell if someone's rich or not just because they wear Zara - if they're buying a luxury bag, they probably have some disposable income coming in somewhere and it might not be their first bag. But it is true that gen Ys and Zs are a major demographic with luxury items these days, and we are very much spurred on by influencers/celebrities who pose with their bags all over Instagram.

What feels really interesting is observing how trends in terms of what an investment even is have changed. For example, my grandfather collected cars. His parents’ driveway had a dang roundabout thing for cars to drive up and away from the front door. Now, cars aren’t the investment they used to be. Even watching stock prices and trends nothing is a guarantee in this economy. The whole thing could roll over on everyone quickly and the only value those items will have may be in their functionality (taking us back to a utilitarian life for a time before we see another renaissance of exquisite craftsmanship from the only perspective being decorative. I feel really (un)fortunate to be witnessing one of these such changes happen before our eyes. We talk about how it must have felt to live the Great Depression, war, what societies on the verge of collapse looked like, and now so much of that is happening at once. My take is, as above, that we may find ourselves investing for different purposes, and at the moment it’s how is it useful to me. Can it bring me joy? Excellent. I don’t want something that doesn’t. That said, it needs to be functional as more than that. It has to serve a purpose, ideally more than one. I am investing in, essentially, myself. How much wear will I get out of something? Is it made of quality materials and workmanship whereby it will be able to be repaired or have we fallen too much into the mindset of single use even for things that should be reused? Will it age with me or what does the care and upkeep look like for it to be a functional part of my day to day? Another example: my custom shoes. They were not made by a high end designer, only costing about $500. Obviously I wanted them to be beautiful, because I knew the insides would have to accommodate custom orthotics that would cost another $500. They were built to my size, and I was able to choose a style of shoe that fit not only several of my aesthetic preferences, but were able to be worn through most of the year (sun, snow, rain). They were made of leather with a patent finish (thick durable sole, both will mould to my feet as I wear them). Because it’s also beneficial for my health that is something I consider an investment. I wouldn’t normally spend $1000 on a pair of shoes, but if it does everything and can be worn everywhere than why not! Anyways sorry for the ramble! ❤

I think it was because of COVID. People were at home saw influencers with beautiful bags and they had disposable income at the time. They didn’t need nice clothes to go out but saw that the handbags were the way to go. Now they are out and about buying the bags. I have always been a purse fan and pick a chose what I like and wear it with whatever I like. I do think that the demand will cool the longer we are out from COVID.

7:19 to 7:25 I prefer wearing clothes that aren’t 800 or 1000 dollars because half the time I find designer clothes to be real tacky actually. A lot of them just aren’t really my taste or style. I do like Zimmermans clothes though they have some beautiful dresses and such I would probably wear otherwise the bags I see attract me more in a sense then the clothes do. The designer shoes are nice touch though. It just depends on peoples preferences. Also I live in Canada so I don’t really know where I would want to wear expensive designer clothes to begin with. Unless it’s to someone’s wedding or something.

  • @latigresseNYC
    @latigresseNYC 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Regarding Point #2, I think all the exhibitionism and flaunting of one's collections on social media makes one a target for stalking offline and potential robbery. How would anyone know what someone has otherwise? Of course, people can be followed, etc. at random on an individual basis in public, too. I was castigated by a poster once for saying that I don't carry my high-end luxury bags when I travel because I don't want to be targeted. Also, I don't want to be forced to set my bags on dirty surfaces on airplanes or have them handled by strangers in airport security or risk getting lost or stolen. This is just one more headache I DON'T want or need when I travel. This person was clearly oblivious to the rising rates of crime in places and reasoned "but so many people carry designer bags around." Fine. They can do what they want. I choose to be a bit more circumspect.

If I moved to a humid environment, I would honestly look into storing most of my bags in a storage facility for high end/luxury items that has temperature control. I know in NYC some women store their fur coats in facilities like this.
Oof, yes robbery is a concern, however, I would just be careful not to post online when I am traveling or on vacation giving people ample opportunity to rob me.

Someday they will be practically worthless because all collector items do this- they reach a saturation level and then the resale market nose dives. In the 80s and 90s women collected fine jewelry- mostly non-branded stuff with the exception of Yurman and look how Yurman 80s and 90s Yurman pieces have gone down in value. I don't regret my collection because I enjoyed them at the time and never considered them investment pieces. I knew they were just accessories.
On the subject of Zara clothes and designer handbags I wear most Anthropologie (maybe a little Veronica Beard) and over priced designer handbags as well as a few pieces of high end preowned luxury brands from TRR and other such sites. I am not going to walk into the Chanel store and come out with bags full of clothes.
But this is going to change and these bags are going to be out of style soon. It is just a matter of time.

Handbags are not an investment. Very few grow in value. If you own a Hermes Kelly in alligator then maybe. But otherwise you would be better off buying LVMH stock than a Louis Vuitton bag. Don’t kid yourself. You’ve been conned.

they can be only if you start your own business of re-selling which most average people dont have time to do

@@Jessiestyle So true. The average person who saves their money to buy a LV, Gucci, or even Chanel bag will never see a profit. At most they can hope to sell it to a reseller at 40% of the retail price they paid. That is not an investment.

I'm so distracted by you wearing a winter coat inside... besides that, good insurance is key! and I cringe every time I see a girl/woman dressed in cheap Primark stuff but she's lugging around a Chanel.. it just looks off

To be honest, I think you can't tell no one that, if you are the one keep showing how many Hermes bags ( unless all yours are fake? who knows in these days.. ) you have bought and tell people following you to all our social media for all your bags and clothing things. Can't be double standards..
