My father reunited with his issued Vietnam-era helmet

  • At the beginning of this year, I ran across a posting in a Vietnam reenactors group on Facebook by someone in the UK looking for more info on a helmet he had recently picked up. In the pictures that were posted, you could faintly make out my fathers name written on the sweat band of the helmet liner.
After contacting the owner, he agreed to ship the helmet to me so I could give it back to my father, in exchange for a similar helmet. After a month or so of back and forth contact, and waiting for shipping both ways overseas, my father, a US Army Veteran who served in Vietnam from 1968-1969 was reunited with his helmet. At the time that it was given to him, he had no idea about this exchange, and it came as a complete surprise to him.

I'm 54 and back in the early 80s I bought a handful of enlisted garrison caps I stashed them in a box and forgot all about them. Forward to last year I am a WWII living historian and was cleaning out stuff when low and behold I trip over this box, now knowing what to look for I go through these caps. One of them was communication piping and on the inside the partial serial no. was on the band. It was my FATHERS!! I caught up with him and showed him. He said where in the house had I found his old garrison cap and I told him the story. I promise you we were both freaked out. Yes so it can sometimes come full circle in life.

One time the helicopter he was in had a malfunction and crashed into a river throwing him and the crew out and leaving them in the middle of the jungle. When they crashed he lost his dog tags and his rifle. None of the crew were seriously hurt and they were picked up by another helicopter of few hours later. Then around 40 (2009ish) years later we looked up his name of eBay because my brothers friend told us to look up ours...sure as shit he saw his dog tags and knew his number by heart...i never will forget that moment

he said he was with the 3rd brigade at Fort Old, what year was he there and what company? The Brigade commandar required every one to wear the helmet liner instead of the ball cap because he was a short guy and the helmet liner made him look taller, you could fold up a ball cap when you entered a building and put it in your pocket, helmet liner was always a pain. Sanford Hoffman I actually found a helmet liner one day while walking home from school. .... sitting on a mm old cinder block by an abandoned house ....... it had been painted red had the compass star
And stripes and chevron on it for some reason
      But it's dated 1955
      Us infantry issue
And the rest is hard to read
It's got the later style of adjustments and misc hardware so I assume it's from an m2 ....
Found it when I was 13. God only knows how long it had been sitting there.........
      it's hanging on my wall
Decent companion to my m1 paratroop helmet.
