Shortly after I wrote GUTS N' GUNSHIPS, I discovered, through a perfect storm of events, an audio recording of my involvement in the extraction of American forces that were about to be overrun by thousands of enemy troops. This mission is described in the book. The following is a small excerpt of the actual radio transmissions. You can find the full audio here:

Edit: It's the kind of Huey entirely made for troop transport (And I would assume medical evacuation), it's called slick because it isn't armed, so there aren't any guns sticking out of it or attached to it's sides

These guys saved my ass more times than i can remember, after hue i was moved to a recon team outside of khe sanh (hill 950) while the battle was still going on.. back in the early days of the war 65-66 you could be in the field doing recon for 12-14 days without shit hitting the fan,, in 67-68 2 days at the most.. i was shot in the shoulder on november 20th 1968 on the border of laos during monsoon season.. pouring rain but it wasn't too bad since we were under triple canopy jungle, was shot by a spotter/scout at dusk about 30 yards feet from me. he was killed instantly by a montagnard that was with us (there was 8 of us, split between US and montagnard or ARVN)
took about 30 minutes for a medevac to come in and find us, luckily the scout was killed since not that far away was a company of roughly 90 NVA, would've gotten pretty hairy if he made it back
Just judging from how calm these guys are, I'm guessing whatever caused the holes near his balls must've then ricocheted right off them.

Calmness on every single situation is a training given to pilots. They dont deserve to be pilots if they cant be calm in this situations.
It just shows how professional they are and how well they can handle themselves in stressful situations.
I can't imagine being this calm and sorted while in combat. Hats off to these guys.
"Chickenhawk" portrays it well. Pilots had hundreds of flight hours before deploying, and even more in the combat zone. Also, the fresh blood usually had an experienced pilot onboard to take lead if anything went to shit.
They often were scared to shit, but training overcame the fear - so they were shitless scared, but didn't panic and lose control.
Their trained to be calm under extreme pressure. Explains how they calmly inform everyone that their going down while half their heli is on fire and their 3 seconds from hitting the ground.

@Mario Salinas "floating tank" yeah right. More like floating tin can. The US lost almost half of all their helicopters in Vietnam. You'd be safer in a tank, for sure. Helicopters weren't armored and offered little protection for the crews. And they knew this. Still they remained calm and collected. Big balls.

They were the evac ones and the other two was the gunships, they supressed fire. But you can tell "slick" probably was screaming a lot while putting in men on the choppers like: "GET IN MOVE!!! MOVE!!! MOVE!!!"

Don’t tell someone that they shouldn’t say anything because they would “never understand.” Those men died, and many brave men and women do today, so people like him can sit at home and play those “bullshit games” and not have to worry. For someone to try to understand what these men went through is not an easy thing, but the fact that he tried, and he sympathized with them means something.

+Third Eye Yes and no to women being on the front lines today. It really depends on where you are and where the "front line" is. Women work in some front-line combat roles like being fighter pilots, and often take part in support missions like convoy duty and base defense where they end up in firefights with the enemy.
Really, ever since airplanes became a fixture of the battlefield, "Front Line" has been a bit of a misnomer, as even rear areas can be the sites of major battles.
+Third Eye They're now allowed to apply for any combat/frontline position, as long as they can pass the training, they can go into combat.
+Raguleader Dont forget all the engineer positions. If im not mistaken, there was plenty of Engineers who were women in the Iraq and Afghan war. All from, bridge building, rebuilding towns/cities and bomb (Of all its kind) removal.
Considering the "frontline" was basically everywhere cause of typical guerilla war that the talibans were doing. These women were in fact on the frontlines :P
When I was in elementary school we had an event for veterans day, I invited my uncle Johnny who was in Vietnam.
We all stood in a big circle and sung the Star Spangled Banner, I looked at my uncle and he was crying, he noticed me and managed to smile even though he was crying. It was a beautiful memory for me.

Yes, in their situation you would do the same thing. It's amazing the fortitude a human can muster when it's a life or death situation. I'm sure the mantra f many a soldier is "I'm not going to die here!" And that keeps them going.

Anyone who's wondering, a "Slick" helicopter was a Huey outfitted for CasEvac (no guns save for door gunners).
"Slicks" were the name given to the Huey's that only had door gunners and were primarily used to transport troops and supplies. We used to call the lifts into the LZ's, Rat Fucks. When on many, many of these. Some were hot LZ's, some were cold. All was a hell of a burst of adrenaline. "Dust Off" was the name give to the medical Huey evacuation helicopter. I only made one flight in one of these.....that was one to many.
Our Dust Offs had no door guns.

Cloud Jr here and I can confirm those were Balls of steel. Tough SOB my Dad. Love him and miss him. So cool having recording.
In the book, he goes into more detail about what "being on fire for a little while back there" actually meant. He had an electrical fire caused by a short in his electric fuel pump controller. He made a gamble to switch to the analog fuel control to try and stop the electrical fire. The reason it was a gamble was because after being hit, it was unknown if the analog pump was still functioning. If it wasn't working, he'd drop like a stone into enemy territory and face death or imprisonment. Oh, and did I mention the thick black smoke filling the cabin? Couldn't even see out the front window. He pulled on the shutoff lever until it literally broke off in his hand. Luckily, he got the lever down, the smoke cleared, and he lived to fight another day. Can not recommend this book enough. The audiobook is also one of the most well read I've heard and actually includes a portion of this video in the audio.

This is definitely cool. Sadly, the popular theme here is 'omg these guys are badass!'. Kids today don't understand that almost all of the troops were 'badass'. This shit was going on left and right, and these two guys got the lightest hit out of the ordeal. Badass isn't like in the movies. It's running in and out of the bullet-riddled jungle to pick up your wounded friends and pile them up at the beach, one by one, until you get shot in the ass and save your legless lieutenant against his will, to later have him join your shrimp boat.

My thanks to all the Croc pilots out there. My Uncle was a "Slick" Crew Chief in Cu Chi in '67-68 and I was a Chinook Flight Engineer until I retired in 2012.

I returned to Vietnam for a visit and ended up making it my 2nd home. So much for my personal promise to never return if I made it out alive. Flew loach, lift and guns. Anyhow, there is an interesting museum in Saigon, 2 klicks from my home, that has a lot of battle maps from VC and NVA. I was in a camp outside Pleiku and I knew there was a fair amount of activity in the area but I was astounded by how much. About once a week, we'd get rocketed or mortared but it rarely hit anything. After seeing the maps, I wondered why they didn't send in at least a sapper for dramatic effect.

It's about a block or two from the zoo, on the right, as you head towards downtown. Not the big war remnants museum all tourist go to. As I found out when I tried to photograph a combat map of the area where I was stationed, you cannot take pictures. Staff were like VC, came out of nowhere just when I got it in focus and about to take it. Have to say they were polite about it.
One of my favorite museums is the Vietnam history museum, right there at the zoo. There are two entrances. One is next to a bridge, you want the other one on the other side. As you walk towards the ticket counter, there is a Buddhist temple on your right and the museum will be on your left. They charge foreigners more than locals and you have to pay extra to take pictures. A small price to pay to help keep the museum in shape.
I was surprised when I entered a dark room with very little light. In the middle was a Vietnamese mummy of all things. She looked in pretty good shape for a mummy.
My favorite memories are walking alone, finding a local coffee shop and sitting down watching the people. One day, I was at the zoo coffee shop outside and a group of Vietnamese invited me to sit with them. Most spoke English but I tried my best Vietnamese. As we were talking, suddenly a hush fell over us as we saw a procession of rickshaw drivers roll up at the street to disgorge their tourists, everyone over 300 pounds. They had to be helped off them and helped on carts to carry them around the zoo. I never saw so many fat tourists in one place. Eyes fell on me for a response and in my best Vietnamese I remarked, "They finally found all the buffaloes that escaped from the zoo." Silence at first. Then one person twittered, another stifled a laugh and that's all it took from me to guffaw at my own sick joke, and that opened up the floodgates. Everyone laughed like crazy.
@@andrewbergman9315 Just thought of another one of my favorite museums, the My Lai Memorial museum at My Lai. Inside the building are all the graphic pictures of the slaughtered women and children and a picture of Lt Calley with title "enemy of the people" and Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson who landed his Huey and drew his sidearm at Calley to stop the slaughter. They labeled him "hero of the people". He got in deep shit for his actions and Calley scot-free. Anyways, for me the best part of the museum was outside. They restored one of the homes you can walk through. Beautiful flower and vegetable gardens are maintained. And what got my soul were the beautiful but sad statues of dying women holding their dead babies. I was with a group of Vietnamese (I live with locals when in Vietnam, whether in Saigon or Song Ve (small village near My Lai) some of whom were former VC. They seemed interested in my reactions. I tried my best to control my emotions with the statues but couldn't. So much came pouring out that surprised both them and myself.

I think people need to take a minute and realize how amazing this is. They were under fire in combat yet had eachothers back and remained calm and in control the whole time. Much respect for our Veterans and God bless them.

I still can’t get over how calm they were under fire. These guys were just legends.
Disregarding how choppy the audio is its incredible how stable and calm these men sound. I know that the amount of training in the military hardens you and and tunes your reactions but these guys dont even miss a beat, not a hint of distress or fear in their voice even when surrounded. At most id say they sounded mildly curious at points but never shaken. Truly a different breed
those helo pilots were the bravest soldiers i ever met.just listening to the audio brought back a flood of memories and tears.

It's more likely they didn't expect the LZ to be that hot. I've read before that generally the helos wouldn't be lit up prior to touching down because it was a waste of ammo for the Vietnamese and gave away their position for some time which would allow a spotter aircraft like a Loach or Bird Dog to direct artillery fire or CAS, instead the Vietnamese would wait until they had the advantage on the ground and ambush troops as they jumped off their helis.

Nothing but props for the army aviators back in Vietnam. I read Chickenhawk as almost required reading from my father when I was getting into army stuff as a young teen, crazy how these guys had .50s and such just ripping into them and tearing their aircraft to hell, yet they always went up, and tried their best to make it back home.

My grandpa enlisted and was infantry in country in ‘69. He passed away February 2021, he had severe PTSD when he came back and he was the most kind loving grandfather that you adore and idolize but I can’t imagine the things he saw in Vietnam.
