Subscribed because of the sense of humour in his innuendos and how he actually gives you options on maintaining your lawn without having big budget tools. Very real, very nice.
We’ve always used the string trimmer to edge the sidewalk but I’ve always liked the extra sharpness that a designated edging tool can make. Hope to eventually invest in an edger soon but currently have to work with what I have available. Thanks for showing that it can be done cheaply with a manual edger. Finally gave me the push to use the manual edger that came with the house to clean up the edges this morning. I will say it takes a little effort to get the edges established when overgrown. Definitely got an arm workout! But it certainly improved the look of the sidewalks.
I have a cheap cordless black and Decker weed eater that has the adjustment to string trim edge and it does great! I noticed the Indiana lawn guys have the best videos on TH-cam makes me feel more at home here in NW Indiana. And lastly I admire your work as a fireman thank you for being the hero that you are!
I am so into the edging of my yard! It really makes the lawn stand out with the UNBELIEVABLE crisp lines. I prefer the stick edger and use it every mow. You can buy a decent one (that uses a power cord) for $120. THANK YOU for the tip to do it first and then sucking up all the junk when you mow. Previously, I would edge after. Then I would blow out all the junk from my long driveway and sidewalk into a pile in the street and then sweep it up. That adds a lot of extra time and effort! Awesome tip!
I love your videos. I use the Worx GT trimmer/edger and it does a really good job. Two of my neighbors have asked me what I use to edge my lawn and then both of them went out and purchased one.
John Wills I got a Worx trimmer as I have a back injury and cannot lift any of the pro type string trimmers. I put pro quality line on the Worx and it does a decent job. But I still think those Echo double string trimmers look incredible.
+1 for the PAS 225 system. I have 7 attachments including the string trimmer, steel edger, blower, articulating hedge trimmer, pole saw, brush cutter and paddle sweeper and two extensions. One tip: get the grass wet prior to edging. Nice video!
I do both. I have an asphalt driveway that doesn't really have the best edges so I use the trimmer there and the edge attachment for the edges along the patio in the back and the street up front.
Good video on edging giving options based on one’s budget and available tools. I too, agree that a string trimmer does an excellent job edging. I purchased an Edgit-Pro attachment for my Stihl straight shaft trimmer a couple of years ago, and I think it’s one of the best yard tool investments I’ve made. It was only about $60 and does an excellent job trimming a perfectly straight edge. For the average lawn care homeowner it gives a professional appearance for short money.
I like the stick edger look better. I like that little gap it leaves between the sidewalk and the grass. FYI: With Echo tools, the attachments also fit their 58V battery power head. They are excellent.
Stick edger. I have the same echo system. I have to use the string trimmer around the landscape because I’m doing the live edge, and I’m terrible at it. Almost looks worse when I’m done lol. Stick edger is definitely a work out if you have a lot to do. I’m have between 500 and 600 ft of just edging along the driveway and street.
I had the manual edger back in the day, YES it was brutal to get the initial edge in. Moved on to a string trimmer and got pretty good, but everyone once and a while "ooops!" Now I' using an Ego 8" blade edger and yes it works great but you do need to blow the debri then cut. I identify with the car analogy, its like spraying your wheels with tire foam after a wax. A good lawn cut needs the crisp edges to look complete and definitely stands out.
I use and old school edge hog I got from my grandfather years ago usually during the first mow of the year. After that I just use my echo trimmer to keep it looking good after every mow if I have the time 👍🏼
I use to have the electric black and decker edger but now I have the echo. I think the black and decker does a better job but I can do the job a lot quicker with the echoe. I normally edge, blow the dirt and grass into the lawn, and then mow that crap up
Busted laying on the ground with a camera admiring the grass I see. 😂 How awkward was that? I can't bring myself to even try it yet...lol Great video as always Justin. 👍🏻
Have you ever tried string trim edging from the grass side? I’ve found that it creates a cleaner line. Also good for when a car is on the concrete or pavement side.
I picked up a used stihl fc91 edger for 120 last season to see if I would like it. Best decision I have a house on a corner and I suck at edging with string trimmer.
I hate 2-strokes and have gone electric for my home use. I've been using a Worx 20V trimmer for over five years with no problems. The spools of line are inexpensive, long lasting, and it feeds automatically. It has wheels on the edge so the head which can be rotated 90°, and with the guide extended you just follow the edge of the concrete. If you do it every one or two weeks it's quick and easy. Now this thing isn't even close to being a commercial duty unit, but when used with care it holds up well. I have four batteries since I also use them for my Worx blower, and a fully charged one will normally handle the trimming and blowing for one session.
Great video Justin. I can't believe you let the edges get so over grown. I have the string trimmer that works like an edger. It has a head the pivots for weeding and edging.
Could be the trimmer line you're using...Project Farm, another youtuber, did a great video comparison of the different brands. I ended up changing lines using his video and it's definitely helped. Here's a link to the vid: th-cam.com/video/89BkJF0kVyc/w-d-xo.html
Quick question, Once we start putting down pre-emergents in early spring and then we start edging, won't that disturb the soil and let weeds breakthrough that barrier? Or it doesn't really matter as long as we continue to put down pre-emergents?
It will disturb the pre emergent barrier but from my experience as long as you are frequently mowing and edging it will keep any weeds at bay. Plus any that do pop up in the edges are easier to hand pull
Are you familiar with the McLane gas powered edger? They are expensive new, but I got a used one for $75.00 and nothing else compares. Enjoy your videos.
@@TheLawnWhisperer hey there now, I'll give you that title for the time being because I'm edging nothing but dirt over here. But but soon very soon I'll be back for the title lol.......til the DEATH!!!!
Blade edger without hesitation. First, the string trimmer tends to chop rather than cut. And second, the grove also provides a clear and distinct separation between the lawn/sidewalk instead of them butting up to each other which, reveals too much of the brown from the grass roots. Of course I have seen people create a trench with the weed eater, but its never as clean as the blades.
Nice! I like to use the blade occasionally but typically maintain more often with the string trimmer based on convenience. And I can do a pretty solid edge with a string trimmer
I would consider myself lazy... so gas edger and trimmer. My miserly sie says manual edger. Iwill have to chech both out. However I will say I am considering the battery option.
Love my Echo PAS 225. Echo built a great homeowner machine with all of the attachment options. If only that chameleon sprayer was built by echo... just saying👍
I prefer using my Edge Hog to get my groove on! I have never gotten the knack of edging with a string trimmer, and practicing on my yard is not really something I'm willing to do.
Can a manual trimmer be used and then come back over it with a string edger? (P.S. glad to know you're a fan of The Office. Greatest comedy series ever!! Thanks for the video!! 📹👍👍
I love the look of the deep groove left from the blade edger. I, however, use a trimmer and keep my edges clean with that on a weekly basis. My signature look is a beveled edge (versus straight up-n- down), and amazingly, neighboring properties are doing the same! Cindy in Maryland =^..^=
Edging is as addicting as striping the lawn! The only part I hate about lawn work is dealing with weeds.. it literally pisses me off. Hell if I could grow new grass like a weed can grow under 3 inches of mulch then my yard would be perfect.

Thanks so much for your expertise in lawn care.

Haha!! You answered my question from the last video!!! Don't think I can do the steady hand with a string trimmer.
I am learning how to edge with a string trimmer. In our home the old owner had so much overgrowth it was ridiculous! I would say about 4 inches wide!
Give you a lot of credit for letting those edges go untouched for this video.
