- Updates for all projects
Castlevania:
Started getting back into developing this further. Some major changes to the project have been made. Made the HUD into 2 rows, so that all 22 rows of the original play area will be included. Videos show current progress on the code, and showing off Mondo's graphics for the Sega version. Music composed by the talented @LouisTheSEGANerd who has made the music for the game some time ago. Demo planned within the next two months.
TMNT:
Not much has been done for this game, but will be. I made some palette changes depending on the turtle you choose. Also some other cut scenes updated.
Phantasy Star II:
Motavia map was completed, but something handling the meta tiles needs to be created. The maps being pretty sizable. Music has been done by @sansenpai3556 and it's totally awesome. All the monster graphics have been converted, and the title screen, there are quite a lot of other resources created for the game. Meta tiles are the only thing holding this project up.
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition:
Not a hack of the TecToy version, a brand new game coded from the ground up. This time, trying to take a sprite focused approach to the game, as opposed to the background tiled method of the original. Logic done up to the actual fighting engine. Just started this project. Again, the talents of @sansenpai3556 are used for the psg music tracks.
Check Louis and SanSenpai's channels out. They are super talented, and deserve all the praise in the world.

Game Gear Link's Awakening:
A conversion project. To convert the game using some old resource ideas in the style of alttp. I used DevKit SMS (As usual) to output a demo of the 3 256 room arrays. Note: I'm not actually deving this game, I just created resources for it, should anyone take on the project.

The TMNT sprites are fantastic! The scenery too! It's possible that the enemies will slow down a bit, but it's quite normal
I dont think people give credit to how seriously vibrant the SMS color palette was
It smoked the NES for certain. Too bad the audio wasn't on par. Honestly with the advent of the Game Gear that was compatible ietj Master System titles, I'm really shocked the Sega 8 bit didn't go further. Nintendo really bullied them into the 16bit world, and essentially killed the TG16 in the US at the same time by forcing companies into exclusive deals, and buying prime shelf space at major retailers.
Much prettier than the NES palette!
Superior than NES in so many ways. In Brazil, SMS won the 8 bit war.
The 7800 also had a color palette that smoked the NES, with 256 colors.
@@KrunchyTheClown78 reallllllly....
I had a Master System. I wish it had seen this much support back in the day.
The problem was that the dev machines were 68000 based Amigas and ATARI ST.
@@MaxAbramson3 , with respect, why does that matter ?
@@tangreen7267 Because it's more difficult to port a 68000 game to a Z80 based system than another 68000 machine like the Genesis. In fact, I believe that's part of the reason why Sato went with the 68k instead of one of the new RISC processors like the ARM, R2000, or R3000 that we'd later see in the PS1. He definitely wanted the much more powerful RISC chip for the Saturn, but that's another story.
@@MaxAbramson3 , Right on, thanks for your thoughtful reply.
WOW! I jsut love all the updates, I always loved the sound from the SMS. Fantastic adaptations fo the tracks and great renditions of the different game's graphics. All of it looks awesome.
This all looks incredible!! And seeing Link's Awakening for the Game Gear in this stage looks delightful. Wonderful use of colors. I am so excited aaaa
Phantasy Star II for the Sega Master System! It's a dream come true! I waited so long for this when I was a kid...
The TMNT game it's looking so incredible !!!!!
Agreed and agreed again!!!
Those Castlevania and TMNT ports look mighty impressive! If Konami had made SMS games back in the day I would have really wanted the SMS TMNT version since it looks so close to the arcade. I think that the SMS can easily do an MSX2 quality conversion of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. Too bad Konami was so tied to Nintendo, this really held the SMS back. Many SMS ports of 16 bit (computer) games like Desert Strike also look really great. The SMS is a powerhouse!
Yup it's ashame about Nintendo's terrible third party contracts back then
@@HollowRick It Sega REALLY wanted TMNT, they could have coded a port themselves. That's how people got around the exclusivity contracts back then.
@@SomeOrangeCat That's a fair point but at that stage in the SMS life, I don't think they were interested in investing that much into SMS when they were more focused on the Genesis.
Holy heck dude, I was just thinking about what you were up to last week, and then you answer my thoughts with this. Excellent!
lol nice!
Those ninja turtles graphics are incredible. All the music in this video is really cool, it's a real trip hearing this stuff on master system. I used to not care for master system psg audio but I think that was mostly just because a lot of the official conversions were worse than the originals. I think I'm coming around now though. Also life would be a whole lot easier if the normal castlevania spawned crosses that often!
FM is definitely the way to go when possible but PSG isn't as bad as a lot of people think ;)
The remastered Castlevania stages and especially TMNT really look like 16 bit games! Wow
Very cool project lineup. You've got a new fan!
Awesome, thank you!
Looks amazing! The Street Fighter 2 SCE title, character select screen and backgrounds demo looks close to the Genesis version (from coloration and proportions). Now I'm curious how the sprites will look like, but I assume they are much smaller.
Oh yeah, they'll be smaller 💯
The color is amazing
This is making me ao anxious, please release these gems as soon as possible!
Amazing work, man!
I'm looking forward to Link's Awakening for the Game Gear. It's looking so good that it resembles A Link to the Past.
Keep it up!
The work on TMNT is AMAZING
Turtles looks absolutely brilliant!!!!!!! Music is so great too!! ❤❤❤❤
I'm glad you like the music :)
@@LouisTheSEGANerd i love it!! dude just let me know when your releasing TMNT I'm in so big time!!
I'll buy or support the project let me know😊🙏🔥
@@LouisTheSEGANerd what are the chances of having FM audio tracks added?
@@aledrinker666 at the minute not very likely due to the limitations of moonblaster tracker (I don't think it would physically be possible to get the stage 1 theme of tmnt into it lol). That being said maxim's smsvgm player recently added support for FM vgm files so not all hope is lost 😅
That looks amazing! You’re doing god’s work
Amazing work on all of them. The TMNT one blow me away, I dream with create some day something visually so appealing but a remaster of TMNT The Manhattan Project.
New Sub.
WOW! This can't be real! H cannot wait for these projects to be completed!!
I think Street Fighter could use super-deformed characters, like the fighting games in Neo Geo Pocket do in SNK vs. Capcom. Using the same graphics as in Mega Drive or SNES is not very realistic, as the Tec Toy port shows.
Another thing, is adding a second player option to games from NES that does not have it, like Double Dragon 1 and Might Final Fight. That would be an awesome show of force of the Master System power.
That's sound reasoning, but that's not how I'm handling this. lol The goal is to get something comparable to an existing nes SFII project that's out there, by Parisoft games. parisoft.itch.io/street-fighter-ii-ne-demo It's a go big or go home kinda deal.
Let's hope that this effort inspires Parisoft's to continue his NES proyect
What I've learned from seeing a whole bunch of demos like this on NES, Master System, Genesis, etc. in recent times is that it's clearly possible to push all these systems further than it might have seemed possible back in the day. All those years have clearly brought possibilities that probably either weren't there before or just weren't practical at the time. And it's producing some great results. Now we just need to see some similar stuff for SNES, because clearly what I just said rings 100% true for SNES also. I think people are going to be very surprised when we get new games and demos for the SNES that also show what it is capable of when pushed to its own limits in our modern times. You can see some test examples on my own TH-cam channel, but seeing stuff like that running in proper new SNES games and demos would be the ideal end goal there. And I for one can't wait to see what comes down the line.
Cartridges limited what could be done back in the day.
@@vintagevideogamenights2923time of development as well
In the case of master system tough, the only part that can't be pushed is sound (sn76489 is a garbage sound chip)
Agreed. Storage was the number 1 limiting factor. The Atari 7800 is, in my opinion, the single biggest surprise in terms of capabilities, that console was an absolute beast, and could match the Master System. Someone also recreated the Link's Awakening over world map on the 7800 too in a video called LsADX 7800 graphic demo, and looks nearly as good as this Game Gear rendition of it.
@@KrunchyTheClown78 may I see that?
Don't forget FM sound!
Unfortunately devkitSMS only supports moonblaster for FM sound which is archaic msx software which needs to be run on an emulator to compose for. It works but it's a pain so FM music is definitely on hold for now 😅
@@LouisTheSEGANerdso you’re also as SMS homebrew dev? I barely knew you people existed until today
There's homebrew devs for all old consoles/computers coz it's fun to see what you can squeeze out of limited hardware ^_^
@@LouisTheSEGANerd looks like I’ve found my people. Are there any guides for SMS/GG programming that you recommend
Woww thats amazing Bro,ITS so Wonderful Man
Castlevania looks amazing with the new graphics! Way better than the original!
This is insane. Castlevania looks amazing on The Master System as does TMNT.
Whoa! You mean you're working simultaneously on THREE projects??
And they're all looking great!
I absolutely HATED the Master System controller, but 99% of the time the games looked so much better than on the NES.
P.S. These look amazing for 8 bit hardware. Sound is pretty good too. Man, those old z80 chips punched above their weight class.
This is perfect, love every project so far
Man those SMS colors are just so good and sharp! can't wait for these games to come!
Quite impressive!!! Great job!!!
Felicitaciones @Sansenpai3556 ! He´s doing a Master System Challenge, around 90 games beated by now.
Damn, that TMNT looks really good! Can't wait to see how that one turns out!
This is an incredible work. Congratulations! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for updating the video.
I'm really, really looking forward to TMNT and Street Fighter (not tectoy version) Castlevania.
I would like to download it as sms data as soon as possible.
I'm so happy because I think I'll be able to play new SMS games in 2024 as well.
Even if it is a paid download, I think I can download it very happily.
Greetings from Brazil...i was thinking about it yesterday. First time I played tmnt Manhattan project on nes. I was surprised by the moves enemies made like pick up a pipe to hurt you. It was amazing. Then comparing to system who had great colors but less games due to exclusive softhouse and Nintendo. Now this. Master system is a great console and should receive at least one cartridge per year.
tmnt looks better than the arcade,SFCE looks 16 bit, and link to thepast looks just like on the snes.. this is pure sorcery
This is all super beautiful work.
And subscribed. I would love to play these games on my Anbernic handheld. The Master System was my very first own console, back in the days. :)
Amazing! =,)
TMNT is amazing. Unbelievable work
Cara todos os trabalhos estão incríveis viu meus parabéns estás atualizações estão impecáveis cada detalhe bem detalhado e tudo mais meu Deus meus parabéns ansioso por aqui 🇧🇷 pra receber estes jogos ❤❤❤
What is this dark magic ? Links Awakening with colors of ALttP on Sega Game Gear 🤯
Duuuude, that Link's awakening port looks stuning, go ahead !!!
Cara muito bom. Fico pensando quanto potencial desperdiçado no master. Fiquei aguardando o PHS2 de master que nunca foi lançado e migrado para o mega rodar. Rssr
Eu já cheguei a SONHAR que tinham lançado TMNT no Master, agora isso está se tornando real!
I'd love to play Castlavania and Zelda on the SMS!
A Link's Awakening se ve genial. Un acertado uso de la paleta cromática de la Sega Game GEAR 👍
But wow. So nice translations of the TMNT sprites. So very impressive conversion work.
Wow, I hope someone picks up the Link’s Awakening project, everything you put together for it looks amazing.
That would be amazing. But I also understand the risk of touching Nintendo IP.
Of all these, Street Fighter 2 was the one that caught my attention the most. It was much better than the Tectoy
nice very good castlevania 1 master system
This would be a really good time to try to port Vampire Killer from the MSX to the Master System and give that game some scrolling with all those richer sprites on display
Yeah I would agree on that, but maybe make it an alternate game mode, or a separate game after the port of the NES version is done.
@@bluestreakedladyshe-her8507 Even better
It would be interesting to see how some of this would port over to systems like the TGFX 16 or the Atari Lynx, sort of like imagining an alternate timeline where those systems had 3rd party support. Or to see Pokemon ported to the NES, like a "what if" Pokemania hit the US in the late 80s instead.
I agree.
Masterpieces incoming..
Can't wait to see what you can do with the fm sound modular with tmnt arcade.
Great work! These games would really benefit from having an FM sound option, makes a huge difference and brings the experience closer to Genesis/Megadrive.
FM support within devkitSMS is still very limited unfortunately but thanks to Furnace Tracker we can still explore what is possible with the FM chip :)

Welcome back dude
Awesome work!
Sonho Realizado!
Eu não tenho nem palavras!
Oh my god!!! I need to buy now
When I saw the street fighter ii reworked for sms I almost dropped my mouth like damn I hope it gets finished soon
Amazing !!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Secessional
Just found the channel by chance, but wow!.now a subscriber. These look utterly amazing! Any thoughts on making use of the FM Sound for those of us with either JPM Master Systems or the FM Sound upgrade installed?
Would love to, if the opportunity ever presents itself. I'm no composer, however. Seems to be a reoccurring request 😊
LOL turtles have no one to fight...................Figures..............New norm.
Focus on one project at a time. Keep up the good work.
Great work!
🤩
wow just image if you´ve could plaz turtles and castlevania in the SMS
Master system is the best consol ever made in humanity history.
amazing work on tmnt! i want play it 😮
Impressive job
This is mind blowing!🤩
Also someone needs to port Robocop the arcade version to any 16bits system. (I can hear it in the background)😅
Good ear! 😆
SEGA Master System Does What Nintendon't
Nintendo still has relevance while Sega....no.😂😂😂😂
Awesome! :D
Why Castlevania intro screen have the "licensed by Nintendo" message? TMNT and Street Fighter looks awesome! Is there a link to the project on github or the ROMS?
It's just copied from the original Castlevania screen (Not sure what version I have). Eventually there will be a disclaimer, and things will be changed. SMS games not available yet. After I release the demos, I'll make the repos public on Git for everyone. The Game Gear ROM is available, the link to the repo is in the description of this video.
Great work everything looks amazing man I wished Sega would hire you and others to still make new games for the Master System , Mega Drive as people like me that grew up with theses consoles love and still will buy games for it
wooooow nice job !
Ola! Tudo bem?
Eu não falo nem leio inglês.
Esses jogos já estão prontos?
Se não tiver, quanto ficar serão disponibilizados para venda?
Abração e parabéns pelo trabalho.
🇧🇷
Around the 3.17 mark it looks like a 16bit game
Super cool. 👏👏👏☺️
These look fantastic! I would definitely Be interested in final versions Castlevania and TMNT. Are any of these going to have FM synth optional?
It's possible, but that would be up to the generosity of others. As I'm no audio wizard. From what I gather, generating audio tracks using Moonblaster is not a preferred experience.
Yeah moonblaster is an absolute pain unfortunately. You can get some nice results in Furnace though so hopefully one day it might be possible to incorporate something like this though devkitSMS :)

Мужик, ты мега крут бро! Умоляю не забрасывай черепах!❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have already loved the way Castlevania looks, but Link's Awakening looks like an SNES game!! It's absolutely gorgeous!! TMNT looks incredible as well!! Far better than the NES version. Are you planning to include the extra NES levels and bosses in the SMS version as well?
Yes! Those will be included. May also add one more unique level for the MS, if possible.
Still hoping for some Master System games based on Tiny Toon Adventures and Rocket Knight Adventures.
Great possibility...
JFC WHAT A BEAST
Genial tu trabajo!, ojala tengamos la suerte de poder seguir disfrutando de tus avances!
How much I love to see those I hope for even more ORIGINAL master system games. I always found the need to port already present games a bit well… low prio. Still any work on master system is great. Also it might act as a good learning experience for the dev and hopefully springboard future original game projects
EDIT: saw now the video is from the developer. Amazing work. Still as said any future plans of a totally new game for?
I like that Castlevania has new graphics. Then I makes more sense to me as it’s not a port/conversation but more original content. Also cool to see approaches to test to port games from newer platforms to MS.
Still I assume such projects if to be more than a tech demo would require plenty of time?
I'm just focusing on each step. I'm having fun with it, and that's all I can say about that. I still have much learning to do. But I'm going to try as hard as I can.
@@xfixium yes the journey is the most important. And it looks great.
The Castlevania one is looking great. I'd just adjust the item drop rate though. It feels a little too generous considering almost every single downed enemy dropped something.
Yes, it's a test for updating the HUD. The current drop rate is 14/16 something will drop lol
Far out the western MS sound chip let the system down, if it had the PSG and the YM2413 as well, then throw in some third party support, special chips and strict management, we would all be playing Sega still today.
I can't wait to see the gameplay for this SF2CE. But will the entire game fit into a SMS cartridge? I'd like to know more about it.
Yeah, that's a serious question. For now, I'm focusing on just getting the engine up, and go from there
Mano você vai finalizar esses jogos?
We shall see?
I can't believe it's not 16 bit!
I assume you're working on multiple projects at the same time to prevent burn out? Like you get tired of one and so you switch to the next one and sort of cycle around?
Exactly
Amazing! But why no FM sound? SMS was capable.
Maybe, in the future there will be
I wonder how the TMNT project will turn out, considering Master System is unable to do palette swaps. Normally the sprites were assembled on having unarmed turtles, so all of the turtles could use the same sprites, then overlaid with determined weapon and bandana color. Here, it seems like each turtle would need individual set of sprites. At least swapping colors for Foot Soldiers that wouldn't be a problem as the NES port was designed to have only one enemy type at a time.
Aye, they would be their own separate resources. The game uses a static sprite palette, where the last 2 colors can be swapped for various other entities. The only concern I have about resource space is if it fits in under 1 MB. Which it should do comfortably. I have a lot of resources loaded in, and it's not even half of that amount, and that's without compression or optimizations applied.
Aleluia🙏
Turtles would have made my 8 years old self very happy
