  • The Chūō Main Line connects Tokyo and Nagoya via the mountainous areas of Honshu. This line is owned and operated by JR East on the east side and JR Central on the west side, with Shiojiri Station in Nagano Prefecture as the boundary.
This line opened between Shinjuku Station and Tachikawa Station in 1889, and the entire line between Shōheibashi Station (the station between Kanda Station and Ochanomizu Station, abandoned) and Nagoya Station opened in 1911. It was in 1919 that it was further extended to Tokyo Station.
Currently, the area between Tokyo Station and Takao Station on the east side of this line is also a commuting line in Tokyo and is called the Chūō Line or Chūō Rapid Line. There are 4-track from Ochanomizu Station to Mitaka Station. This is called the Chūō Sobu Line, which runs from Akihabara Station and Kinshicho Station to Chiba Station.

Feeling nostalgic because I lived Nishi-Ogikubo, and I rode this train daily for 4 years. At 20:52, if the camera would have been pointed left, you would have been able to see my apartment from there, then the train passes the station I went to every day. I really miss Japan.

Please also take a look at this video. I think that you can find an apartment where you lived for 4 years.

I too lived in Tachikawa in 1969 and 1970. I would ride the Chuo Line trains from Tachi to Ochanomizu, then change trains for the short hop to Akihabara to shop for electronic bargains. As a high school student, I learned to speak Japanese by riding that train. One of my last bucket list items is to once again hop aboard one of those orange trains for a day's adventure in the tiny electronics shops in the catacombs beneath the Akihabara train station. Somehow I suspect that a round trip ticket is going to set me back a little more than the 270 Yen ($0.75 USD) that it cost me fifty years ago. I can't begin to explain what amazing adventures I had exploring Japan as a 16 year old. What an amazing time and place to be an American!

  • @frankroberts9320

They bypassed Kunitachi and Tachikawa? As a 16 year old American, I used to take the Chuo Line from Tachikawa to Akihabara via Ochanomizu and back at least once a week to buy electronic parts in 1969 and 1970. Back then the round trip fare was 270 Yen, or 75 cents. The trip took me through Shinjuku Station both ways which could mean an hour of agony or ecstasy, depending upon whom you were squeezed when the cars filled up. Very nostalgic video. Thanks for posting.

Yes, the Musashino Line opened on April 1, 1973, also opened the Nishi-Kokubunji Station which is the transfer station between Chuo Line and Musashino Line at the same time. The round trip fare between Tachikawa Station and Akihabara Station is now 1280 yen (about 11.55 dollars). Thanks for your comment.

    Dear Friend:
I am a fervent rail fan and admirer, next year I will be touring Japan with Japan Rail Pass for 14 days. I need to know which route I would recommend, both in distance and through the landscape, but on limited express trains, it measures 1,067 mm. From now, thank you for your attention.
