  • Is it a hype train, or are these headphones really that good? Today we're taking a look at the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones for gaming. These are 250 Ohm headphones that require an amp to properly power them. Let's find out if people are using them because they are Ninja's headphones, or if they are actually that good. Are they worth it? And yes...the GoXLR and GoXLR Mini can power these headphones properly.

    is the sound coming out of the headset loud enough to screw my microphone recording?
    I'm afraid to be recording a video and instead of taking only my voice, the sound of the game will be captured as well

    • @hammerdance
      @hammerdance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s highly possible that your mic can pickup some noise coming out of the ear cups. For me it’s not really a problem because I use a noise gate though so as long as you adjust your noise gate accordingly you should be perfectly fine.

      If you’re worried about this yes. It does leak I mean it’s obvious as it’s open back, but if you are worried get the DT 770 Pro both almost the same audio, just this is closed back so it won’t leak at all

    • @tuunaes
      @tuunaes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Unless you're trying to kill your hearing sound leak is completely insignificant compared to for example keyboard noises and mouse clicks.

      @nasserakasheh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tuunaes lol i dont think you understand, in a studio session YOU CANT USE any open back, so it depends on the application used in, in this case its gaming so it wont matter as much but if it matters to him this much then just get the 770s.
      + its significant as it depends on the microphone polar pattern aswell, the headphone is closer to the mic than the keyboard (DEPENDS on application)
      Respectfully

    i had DT990 Pro 250ohm, DT990 Edition 600ohm, and the DT1990 Pro 250ohm now.
    I initially upgraded to the 990 Edition to avoid the coiled cable, they are a bit better in terms of detail and clarity - but to me getting rid of the coiled cable was the best.
    For the DT1990 they are at a whole different price bracket at 3 times the price, they have removable cables and they come with both coiled and straight cable, and they have multiple aftermarket options for earpads which greatly change the sound.
    Highly recommended for gaming and music, all 3 pairs have ecxeptional clarity, detail and a huge immersive soundstage.
    All were powered by a Sound Blaster AE-5 which had no issue driving any of them, even the 600ohm pair.

      Lol I disagree he has no idea what he us talking about with these cans an is clearly used to consumer level products. Which is fine everyone has to start somewhere.
      These are entry level pro audio gear the pro part isn't a gimmick label it's vastly different from consumer level gear. Eg. He states the cable is not replaceable with these headphones. Pro level gear are made with replaceability in mind they disassemble in less then 3 mins every component in them is replaceable. The cable is literally a 30 sec on off solder job to replace you can replace it with any cable you like including upgrading it to a balanced cable easily even if you've never soldered before. That's a simple difference besides sound quality you get from pro level gear.
      Pro level = fix replace parts use the same headphones for 15 years+ if the sound profile is great for your ears. Which is why you should save an buy double your budget when buying pro level gear imo.
      Consumer level = cord breaks, ear cup tears, switch cracks , volume rocker fails etc etc chuck out buy new gear. Majority of the time consumer level gear is a pita to fix yourself even for simple wiring an replacement drivers ear cups etc are never available.

      Probably not as expensive as the crap astro gen 4s they sound crap since they no longer can use the optical cable need a hdmi optical spliter but then again if you had wired headphones and you wanna get even more from it Probably works around the same price to buy a 2nd hdmi cable my hdmi cable was pricey but futureproofed for 8k 10k audio quest carbon
      The sound blaster sounds great even without the optical cable am I right but you can get better sound from optical cable it just makes sense to go optical very prcey to go with a hdmi spliter and a higher quality optical cable aswel would make these beyerdymic 990 sound even great that I bet peaple without optical are missing out on pontential sound quality there is a reason why there is a optical port on a decent quality dac amp its to get more from your headphones

    • @hammerdance

      It does not! It’s incredibly loud outside of the headphones. I use a Shure sm7b mic and I do use a noise gate so that helps, but I think any microphone with a decent noise gate would do this.

      do you use a seperate DAC with the Atom? thx

    • @petertaylor9371
      @petertaylor9371 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scarstruck85 I have it hooked up to my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which serves as the DAC. My setup is a little unconventional. The main outs of the Scarlet are going to my JBL monitors. I wanted to hook my headphones and my monitors up to work at the same time so I can quickly go between them. But since the RCA 1/2 out's volume is also tied to the main outs via the volume knob, I'm running the 3/4 stereo out into the Atom. Now since Windows has crap audio support and cannot send audio through two separate stereo outputs simultaneously, I use Voicemeeter Banana (which is free) in place of the Windows mixer and that allows me to output both stereo outs from the interface. I use the headphone out on the interface to run into my Subpac. The final result is that my monitors, headphones and sub all have separate outputs which allows me to control their volume independently.

    I just recently picked up the DT 770 Pro's myself, which are basically the same thing, just closed-back, and could not believe the difference they made. They are amazing.

    • @streamershaven
      @streamershaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tristan Lavictoire Yes, one is open back and the other is closed. The point was that for me; they made a huge difference in audio fidelity over my former headset, the Logitech G933's.
      They are otherwise the same technology,, It's not like one is electro-static drivers and the other standard coil drivers. the open-back nature of the 990s have a wider stereo field, but the stuff my friends say isn't always appropriate for a 4 yr olds ears, so closed back was my only real option.

    • @streamershaven
      @streamershaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tristan Lavictoire Yes, Wider Stereo field. I stated that. Two products from the same company under a similar lineup.
      That said, using a VST plugin like Ozone 9 Elements, and the Stereoizer portion, the sound can be emulated to an extent. Not a perfect reproduction, but good enough.

I do believe they have a better sound stage then the DT 990. I would like to add i have the AD700x and there amazing as a low Ohm and can be powered by everything and sound just as good as the other 2. but i still use my HD 58X. For me there just unbeatable. The next pair of headphones i am buying is sennheiser 6XX from MassDrop. Awesome video man.

    As someone who used these headphones for years now, I will say the earmuffs can get really worn out and the sliders can break/crack easily. They do sell replacement parts for the 2 and practically everything else about the headphones(you could theoretically make your own buying all their parts) but they're fairly pricey. I highly recommend those who get these headphones to be aware of the potential of the slides breaking and the ear muffs wearing out so I recommend you all to be very careful with them and take care of them properly. But overall it's really good. It does sound very quiet without an external amp. I grew up around other studio-grade headphones (mainly because my dad loves to get top-grade headphones and really picky about their sounds and he tends to give the ones he dislikes to me). I recommend those who can't get an amp because they're fairly pricey to get a different headphone (I'd recommend a Sennheiser HD598SE or something along the lines) otherwise you'd just be wasting your money on headphones that you can't get the best experience out of it.

      You gotta be careful with it, at 5 inches you are fine. But if you are BLASTING the audio and the mic is very close to ear cups it will pickup some sound depending how sensitive you have your noise gate configured. You should be fine though, everyone has been able to make it work.

      Since the 990s are 250ohm you will more than likely want to get an amp to run between the Go XLR and the headphones. With the right amp, these headphones can almost be unbearable in loudness. A great amp for these is the JDS atom. If you're not trying to spend a lot, there are some mini-amps out there for around $30-50, but some of them don't have preamps and are more likely to have noise upon amplification.

    • @paolino574
      @paolino574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The high impedance means that u need much more power for them to sound properly, for 80ohms just the console it's not enough. An amp could be used above 50ohms to hear the difference in sound quality.

    • @Pentenfi
      @Pentenfi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A proper amp and/or DAC will increase soundquality regardless of impedence used.
      The impedence roughly tells you how much power you need per volume. Though also sensitivity of the headphones is an important factor.
      Long story short, the 80 Ohm should work with your console alone but I would recommend an USB dac/amp (soundcard) for the 990 pro to get them to sound properly

    Otherwise great video but it is misleading. Firstly, dt990 highs are razor-sharp, you can't listen to music for an extended time with reasonable volume. Secondly, larger soundstage doesn't improve positional awareness, imagine does. These headphones have great soundstage AND imagine, it's rare to have set with both being good but is explainable by the openback design and sharp treble. Thirdly, even though these are 250ohm, they are pretty sensitive and CAN be powered with a motherboard(for example b450-f gaming). In my experience, even my phone (mi 9t) can power them. I'm not saying you wouldn't benefit from a great amp or dac, but it is false that they don't even produce soud when not plugged anything other than an amp. I'm not here to bash these headphones or the review, they are excellent for gaming and comfortable(personally, not the most).

    • @lars4108
      @lars4108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lauken8558 I don't think they're gonna be too big for you. Cause they're very lightweight and the earcups are super comfortable. The clamping force was a little too much for me in the beginning, but they really loosen up and sort of adjust to your head size after a few days. Plus the quality of them is really good so they're gonna last you for years (i even accidentally sat on them once and they're still fine lol). And since you're 14 you're obviously going to get taller and bigger eventually, so it's a good idea to buy something you can use in the future as well. Hi! This is a high quality production! I love it!
    Question: I'm looking at building a new rig during this summer and while at it, I wanted to move away from the typical gaming headsets, as I'm just not really feeling that they give the spatial awareness I need anymore. In addition, I work with some editing and music from time to time and I don't want to swap back and forth between sound outputs for different purposes. I'm looking at getting this headset, and also installing a Sound Blaster AE-7 internal sound card to be able to power it (and add potential extra virtualization regarding spatial awareness).

      DevGambit as far as I know , for this price range 120-140$ these are the Best Buy (comfort, treble, bass , mid , soundstage, materials , etc..)

      Sennheiser is garbage. Sennheisers have no bass, no soundstage, treble that rolls off completely after 6khz so remaining 14khz of higher frequencies in human hearing range (20hz to 20khz) arent even audible. Sennheisers are mids only, trash headphones.

    mixing Beyerdynamic dt 990 pro with an actual Realtek ALC 1220 high end motherboard will give you a high audio quality, but better using highe end amplificator to ensure to push the ohms on it max level to give you better audio quality, for gaming movies tv shows music soundfx overall use! if you can purchase AMP , if you are audiophile or critical use.

    Since I didn’t see it mentioned yet:
    There‘s the 990 „Edition“ which for most users is probably the better choice. No sound difference, the only differences are:
    Cable is straight rather than coiled
    Clamping force is reduced for an even more comfortable sit, especially when wearing it for long durations.
    As for most gaming contexts a non-coiled cable is probably less annoying, check out that one maybe.

    check your motherboard audio spec's some motherboards already come with a amp installed with the sound card, and can power 250 ohm headphones. My z370 professional gaming i7 can power headphones up to 600 ohm with no external power needed.

      yea man my mobo says it supports up to 600 ohm as well. I noticed they sound way better plugged into the mobo io then the case io. Only problem I'm facing is I have to physically unplug the speakers and plug in the headphones every time i switch.

    Soundblaster G3 costs $50 guys buy it, its freaking amazing and has built in lossless eq that allows you to upsample the PS5 audio or xbox audio if your on console, being that Playstation and Xbox is limited to 16bit audio. With this dac you can force the audio to bigger heights 🥵
