**NOTE** - At 01:49 - what I mean by that is if you intend to use your headset mic. If you have another solution for your mic, then you can use any standard dac/amp. Also, notably missing from this list today is the SMSL DL200. I'm going to do a future vid that addresses all the option *below* the $150 mark for people that are more budget limited. (and it won't take 4 years this time lol) Reply to this if you have any specific requests or recommendations.
Speaking of mic solutions, I'd love to hear your thoughts on audio interfaces as well. Personally, I like the cleanliness of being able to drive my mic and headphones at the same time from a single device.
@@Extra_ChrisBIts tough to find a single interface that has enough headphone output power to drive audiophile headphones. I prefer it as well, bc I like to hear my mic back in my cans with no latency. Most of them I've tried so far perform the same, but I may have a solution in the near future
Would I be able to use powered speakers with the Schiit Magni Unity? I think I am leaning towards the Topping DX3 Pro+ as the remote would make it easier to switch between headphones and speakers in my setup.
If you buy a Magni with an internal DAC, you can bypass it later if you want to build a stack. It has an RCA mode only. You can add a MODI later and a LOKI mini. Yes that means you pay like $80 initially for an internal DAC you may not use later, but just to say that if you just want to start with one box like the MAGNI UNITY with DAC, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of it later if you want to build up a stack over time.
I went with the JDS Atom stack because they also sell the matching Subjective3 old school EQ. It’s SO nice to have the ability to instantly scoop the mids, boost the bass, or roll off the highs when a particular song call for it. No digging through an app interface for EQ curves. Just twist a couple dials and you’re set. It’s probably my favorite audio component right now.
Do you have the New Atom 2 Dac and Amp? Was kinda jonesing for these, then found the Magni Unison with same power in one small package, and sounds great!
@@seanadams2391 I bought these awhile ago so I have the original versions. They’ve performed great with all my headphones so I wouldn’t hesitate to buy them again, even with the new versions available now.
I had iFi Zen Dac V1 and there was a diference after pluging in 5V4A cheap psu(those offered by iFi are a joke, I paid like 5$). It came to life and had like 30% more power vs USB power only. Using balanced out it would power vintage 300 ohm Sennheiser HD530 no problem
Just pulled the trigger on a modi magni+ and Loki stack and your video finally helped me figure out if the unity would have been the wiser choice, knowing I can't even use it with the Loki is very helpful, this video came just in time for me! Thank you! Subscribed!
I LITERALLY just watched that one from 4 years ago and was like wheres the sequel. Glad to see that was mentioned here, great first timer videos. Glad I stumbled my way here
I've been so annoyed with mine. When it wakes from standby, the sound is incredibly muffled and I have to pull the power and plug it in again. Annoying as hell. Looking at the K7 instead.
@@ToreOnTH-cam What do you mean by "sound is incredibly muffled"? Does the sound become muddy after you haven't used the DAC for a long time? What are you connecting it to? PC or Mac?
@@longkick649 It sounds as if the sound is being played through 5 layers of pillows with static on top. I don’t know why it did it, but I ended up returning it and buying a K7.
@@longkick649 The only problem I have had with the K7, was connecting it to a USB 3.0 port, which results in it not "waking" on PC boot. Connecting it to USB 2.0 OR using a USB 2.0 cable fixes this. Sound seems a little richer on the K7 as well and the bass is a little more noticeable. Overall very happy with the swap.
I got the Topping DX3 Pro+ amazing sounding DAC with my Hifiman Sundara. Also love the versatility of the remote + blue tooth. I can play music from anywhere its an easy W.
The Fiio K7 volume pot is digital compared to the other ones which are fully analogue. That means it's non linear in its output, which explains the volume hikes at different increments. The bass boost on the Zen Dac V2 is not DSP, but instead employs some analogue wizardry according to iFi's spec sheets - probably a low pass/low shelf analogue filter.

I just recently bought the Topping DX3+ Pro to replace my old Topping D2 that has served me for more than 10 years. I was surprised by how huge the difference in sound quality is. I always thougth that the D2 sounds good and I don't feel the need to replace it. The main reason I bought the DX3 is because the realtek chip of my motherboard is broken and I can't connect the D2 through optical and must use USB, so it's limited to 16/48, while the DX3 can run full 32/768 through USB. It's one of the best decisions I made Now with the DX3 i hear more nuance in music and I can play DSDs, which sounds incredible....
I picked up the iFi Zen Dac V2 after watching your video and I'm absolutely blown away, paired that with a Sennheiser HD 560 and I'll never go back to standard audio.
I use the Zen DAC v2 on my PS5 and it performs great. I stopped using the 5v as well but more because it can only switch to UAC1 mode when powered by the USB (I A/B switch between console and Mac). Great vid.
Had the DX3Pro+ for 2 years. Used it with HiFiMAN HE-4XX and JBL 305p MKII and it’s amazing. Incredible power and very clean sound, responds very well to EQ/VST through EqualizerAPO for that thumping yet clean bass that I love.
I absolutely love my JDS Element III Mk2 (DAC/amp all-in-one); it has enough power for 99% of my headphones and iems, small footprint, and with the latest firmware gives you the ability to EQ multiple bands of bass and treble. It is double the price of most of the units mentioned in the video ($450) but absolutely worth it imo to save up a little more.
Can I ask a question as I’m fairly new to the headphone game. Is the small black mk2 an amp and DAC combined ? I currently have a quadelix 5k and seems to work fine with most headphones . Would this DAC/amp make a huge difference to my listening experience ?
I have both the Fiio K11 and K7 -- K11 has been regulated to my worksetup. I used it at my primary setup, where i regularly switch between a soundbar and headphones and going in the menu to switch output was pissing me off to no end. The K7 makes it so easy. However, I never expereinced a volume problem. Turnin g it up or down results in no change: only the powerd soundbar itself dictates the volume I also have the Zen dac V2 -- but that has been regelated to be sold off -- great unit but misses the oompf I needen, and the need to unplug headphones to activate the speaker output put me off
I just got the JDS Labs Atom Stack + secondhand with all the cables for $100. I'd say if you can find it secondhand for that price it really can't be beat.
For newbies who are likely to upgrade their desktop setup, I typically recommend a tongle to get started. They will work for desktop use and do a great job with the majority of cans out there. Then you can eventually upgrade your desktop setup and still use the dongle for mobile use. I have a Fiio BTR5 and it powers a Sundara and a HD600 and sounds great. It can run through USB or bluetooth so I can use it to wirelessly connect to my phone or computer. Plus, you can get a lot of these dongles for $100 USD.
Hi! I'm using a Fiio KA1 dongle DAC with a pair on Sennheiser HD 560S. Would an upgrade to a desktop DAC like the Fiio K11 or K7 make a worth change in sound quality?
I just got the Fiio K7 and love it. I was originally using a cheap Behringer audio interface that only went up to 16bit/44khz and the difference the K7 has made to my IEM’s is huge. At 1’st I was unimpressed but after an hour of using it it really came alive
All great recommendation’s. I’ve tried a few from this list (atom, zen dac V2, magni/modi). Love the build on Ifi stuff and the truebass button is addicting. I’ve gone up since then to the JDS Labs Element III mkii. It’s 450 but an all in 1 with enough power for 99% of headphones out there. It’s all metal with a BIG knob, amazing build with the BEST customer service in the business from JDS Labs here in the states. Can’t recommend them enough.
For HP amps/dacs, I have K7, Zen DAC V2, DX3pro+, as well as Zen Can, L50/E50 stack, L30II, Atom Amp+, & Liquid Spark. All killer units. Ive tried all kinds of combos for my fav HP's (Arya Stealth, XS, Sundara, M50X, 840a, 770 250ohm, 700x, 6xx, 560, etc.). Depending on the HP/speaker, you may prefer one sound over the other. However, for AIO's I must say that the DX3pro+/6xx match is PERFECT. The clinical and wider presentation of the DX3 really synergizes with the lush & narrower 6xx. Overall, the smooth & liquid presentation, farther sounstage matched with the versitility of xbass, and the plug and play design, makes the Zen DAC still a great choice. The K7 has a meaty/black/tight sound and more routing, but has finnicky controls. So many great options! - its never been a better time to be a beginner audio enthusiast!
Hi John, very insightful comment. I am looking to buy my first DAC/amp combo, which one would you recommend if you like a warm sound signature? And which one would you personally get as a first timer or beginner audiophile?
@@brianellis2287 - Warm/Neutral: K7 - Warm/Colored: Zen Dac V2 - Relaxed/Neutral: SMSL DL200 or C200 - If you can/want/like to use EQ: DX3pro+. - If possible, try to audition these (@ $200 price point). You'll have more flexability if you go for a stack, and a good combo for warmth, for example, is E50/Zen Can (connected balanced). You also need to consider your I/O needs, what headphones you'll be using (power requirements), etc.
@@JohnSmith-oe4bw hi John, thank you for your response. I am based in South Africa and audio products here are very limited. I currently have Sennheiser bt450's which I want to replace which I know isn't near audiophile territory. I am looking at getting AKG K371 for a start and then HifiMan Sundara V2 or something from Beyerdynamic but I think the Beyers are all too analytical? If you have some headphone recommendations please feel free to advise, thanks man.
I personally use Schiit Fulla E and I must say I am more than happy with results ... although I am not using any power hungry headphones, mainly Fidelio X2s and from the other end I have connected Edifiers R1700s and both sound great through this. And yes I can confirm that these can get a bit pricier when ordering out of US (Czech Republic, Europe), but that's mainly thanks to our wonderful Import and customs laws
I picked up the SMSL C200 because it’s available in Canada and the dac sounds great! Its closest competitor in the price range is the topping dx3 pro+. I use it with HD 560s and a set of active 2.1 speakers.
I just grabbed the Magni Unity and I absolutely love this bad boy! I got it in the brushed aluminum and it's beautiful! Drives my HD660S2 so well. I would never had found out about Schitt without you Brian! You put out some awesome content and love you positivity in this community! Stay up brotha and Merry Christmas to you!🫡
Qudelix 5K deserves a mention, it's tiny and portable. It has bluetooth and USB input and can EQ and support microphone input too. It can power headphones like a 6XX just fine.
Paul's Hardware sent me here to see what's being recommended in 2024. Nine years ago I bought the Monoprice 111567 DAC Amp for ~$100. It has USB D in; RCA preout, RCA line out, and RCA aux in; a gain boost switch, and a front-panel 1/4" jack and USB/aux input switch. It does a great job of powering my Sennheiser HD 540 Reference Gold headphones (yeah, I bought them new in 1990) and sounds very clean with an inaudible noise floor. Great purchase. Sadly, it seems to be no longer available, which figures given everything has gone USB-C. All these newer units seem fine, but nothing that would make me upgrade.
Per your recommendation I bought the ifi Zen Dac V2. Very nice small unit to power my Sennheiser HD 560S as well as my Monoprice M570's. Thank you for the Zen Dac review. I absolutely love the Ifi Zen Dac. 😎
I do have a K7 and I just love it !!! When you pair it with a planar IEM or planar headphone it is just amazing. When you pair with a Sennheiser HD600 it is unbeatable….Thanks for your review.
I've had my JDS labs atom dac and amp and have had 0 complaints, the all plastic casing is definitely a let down but for how cheap they were they got the job done to power most of my headphones.
After watching reviews for days I went with the Topping DX3 Pro+ and got it on sale for ~160€ as my first DAC/AMP. Absolutely no regrets. Like you said: Really clean sound. This gives you the option to then fine-tune your headphones/ IEM through Peace EQ. Also one thing about this unit: I do not use Bluetooth or the remote at all ... at least for now. At some point I wanna buy proper speakers for my living room and will then use the Topping over there and suddenly the remote and bluetooth is massive! Even if you buy a higher end DAC/Amp later down the road, this unit can then be used for something else. You really cannot go wrong with this. In my opinion the best entry-level DAC/Amp.
I would recommend looking at the use of a streamer instead of the Bluetooth, there's a decent drop in sound quality when using Bluetooth. That being said, it all depends on your source and if you care haha. WiiM makes some good and affordable options, I've been using my WiiM pro since it came our and very happy with it (i feed it into external dac and amp). They now also have a version with a built in amp and dac but that would defeat the purpose of you having the dx3 pro already, dac in there would most likely be better. That being said, if you're happy with Bluetooth transmitted source then your option is perfect for your use case! (You could still use your dx3 with the wiim pro and use the dx3 as digital volume control + DAC. Alternatively wiim can be set to control volume, remotes are available, I haven't used that.)
I run my PC38X through the $9 Apple USB-C adaptor, as my motherboard's supposedly fancy "Saber" DAC went out entirely. Is there really a noticeable difference going to a fancy DAC/Amp vs. the Apple adaptor with the PC38x? Also, is spending a couple hundred dollars to get a DAC/Amp for my PC38x worth it vs. just spending $300 for a set of Audeze Maxwells (which would double as music headphones at work)?
I started with the magni modi stack and the hd6xx's years back, and since then have moved on to a bifrost/jotunheim stack with HE6se's that I love. it definitely gets crazy when you start loving your audio and wanting to explore the alternatives out there.
I just got the JDS Stack. Absolutely perfect for my setup with 1 personal PC, 1 Work PC, and a PS5 all able to be connected. (PS5 is using 3.5mm input from monitor)
I have ifi Zen Stack Dac and Can both for over 4 years now, and very happy with them, recently I bough Fiio k5 pro for my brother, I still prefer ifi Zen Stack over K5 pro, I feel the difference is huge in sound quality.
I’m new to all this, I currently have Beyerdynamic DT 900 pro x, I have them plugged directly into my pc via the 3.5mm. I feel like they’re not loud enough nor am I getting the full use out of them, can anyone recommend if one of the DAC/AMPs in the video would suit me, or where to start?
Besides your brief mention of the Schiit prodcuts and a 3rd product you don't seem to like anymore, can you do a specific video reviewing as many gaming centric DACs as you can? I want a good one with mic input for a gaming setup. Are there any new and upcoming products you didn't cover in this video for 2024?
The k7 "low audio" until 12oclock is supposedly for sensitive iems. The way I've seen it explained. 6-12 for iems and 12+ for headphones. All iems I've used still have 0 to almost no audio from 6-9. But thought I'd put it out there if people wondered why fiios have that weird adjustibility
One thing to note about the Zen DAC. There is a reason why it has a USB 3.0 Type B plug and cable. Plugging it in to the appropriate port is the only way it can get the full balanced power out without needing an external power supply. Otherwise, if you were to use an ordinary printer cable, the external power supply becomes necessary.
Have had the ifi a few years myself tho its just started to get a low volume like clicking noise when there is no audio.. it could be the power supply I have been using with it so will try without as you mentioned you have no issues just with USB power.. Running DT 1990 pros and yeah its handles them fine.
Thanks for the great review and having owned the Zen Dac v1, Fiio K7 and DX3 Pro+ I can 100% confirm your take on the Fiio and Topping. My Zen Dac got outmached pretty hard by either of them though, maybe it's because I had the v1. I ended up keeping the Topping as it's clean. Was afraid it would be too clinical, dared to try it based on this video and it was love at first listen thanks to you. Not mentioned in the review is that it remembers each volumes when swithcing outputs, can auto start with windows and dim or turn off lights which seem gimicky but add up towards great user experience.
Im a bit of a topping fan. Great to see them show up here. My choice thats a bit more would be a DX5 Lite. Its like a mini DX7 Pro+. The balanced XLR out from Monitor Speakers are what drew me to Topping originally.
@@ruairimclarnon24i have the Zen DAC v1, and it's great for IEMs, but the dt770 80ohms can't be powered at satisfactory volumes. It even distorts at high gain max volume. The HD599 did fine, but some games like a lot of the Ubisoft games run at low volumes, so the HD599 had to be pushed to max volume. Didn't distort, but I could tell it could benefit a bit with a better amp. For Spotify, TH-cam etc, the HD599 worked loud enough even without the high gain mode.
Found the channel recently. Love the topics you cover and the major points you always hit. Been helping me a lot with upgrading to a higher end set up!
Still have my gsx 1000 and jds labs atom amp stack for my dt990 pro and haven't looked back. Thanks for that recommendation. The 7.1 with game mode eq and the setting that boosts the sound in front of you mixed with the super bass boost eq in game made cold war a whole new game. I was able to hear thing and pin point sounds like never before. Wish we could get one of these companies to rival the gsx 1000
Gaming with 7.1 support - Onboard Realtek ALC1220 + Equalizer APO + HeSuVi Music - Schiit Stack, but recent stories about Magni catching fire is a little scary.
hehe my starter is a Bahringer UM2 with an old JVC find at a thrift store. Not exactly small form factor, but works nicely. Naturally I have been drooling over the Schiit line though.
Cyber_NZ my friend can u tell me how the mic input is? heard mixed comments, but audio apparently is dope at least so theres that but then I might aswell go for fosi 4 if the mic sucks on 5
Fiio K5 Pro user here. Best DAC/AMP combo for 150 and under (165$ on amazon rn). Never had any issues what so ever. I don't even think I'm ever gonna upgrade until the unit breaks or something.
my starter desktop system was the smsl su-1 and a $30 amazon headphone amp with a sparkos opamp in it and some $5 monoprice rca cables for around $200 with tax if nothing is on sale. i now have the topping a70pro as my headphone amp and am like $1600 into this hobby in the past 8 months. the first system was great so im sending it to a friend when i get the geshelli 4499 dac.
One thing that I would add is that you can use the dx3 as a dac and buy something like an A50, so ther is still that upgradability, plus you get Bluetooth.
Your video from years ago got me to settle for the Magni / Modi Schiit stack, and I still use it now with the DT1990 Pro, and I still love the sound signature and the quality. I've never needed to upgrade since.
The iFi "audiophile" power adapter actually made a massive difference for me & my setup -- but I imagine I'm very much an exception to the rule. It really only matters if you have problems w/ buzzing and electrical noise due to dirty power from the wall or a sketchy extension cable. As for me, I have a Zen DAC V2 fed (and powered over USB) by a Zen Stream sitting on a corner table w/ a built-in outlet. Plugging the Zen Stream into that corner table's outlet with a standard 5V adapter and listening to the Zen DAC w/ a sensitive IEM resulted in so much buzzing & popping that I genuinely thought I received defective products. After doing some research, I picked up that $70 wall wort and it almost completely eliminated the electrical noise. So I can confirm -- it definitely works (and seems to be priced in line with other similar products), but unless you have significant problems with electrical noise on your amp/dac, then its only value is as a placebo.
unless your grounding sucks it's such an easy fix and if it was grounding better adapter wouldn't help much either way, I got APC PME5B-GR power outlet which has voltage spike reduction built in, they are so confident in their stuff they offer 40 thousand euros covered in damages if voltage manages to fry something through their outlet
Schiit Modi broke after only like 3 years (started not turning on unless I powered it separately after like 1 year, and it full on broke about 2 years later) . I might have had just a bad draw, but I throw this info out there if anyone wants to consider it before buying it. Magni still works. My Schiit stack is half schiit now.
I was wanting a stack over a combo unit, but the topping dx3 pro+ and now finding out about the magni unity is very appealing. Heard people say the magni modi is warm over the topping e30 l30 stack, which also has a version 2. Need more quality iems before I focus on amps and dacs though
Last week I decided to go with FIIO K5 Pro which I ended purchasing for 135USD. It will be connected to my Desktop based on ASUS STRIX-Z590 and Laptop ASUS Zenbook UX425 audio source, dishing through my KLIPSCH R-41PM Reference Active Speakers. It also has enough juice to power up my DT 900 Pro & Master & Dynamics MW75. I was considering the Topping DX3 but the price gap VS the remote and BT didnt really convinced me since I already got Remote for the speakers anyway. Quality wise I do not really see that difference either. Anway, you got good content here and rocker Beard, so I'll SUB : )
DX3 pro all day. I've owned all but the magni unity, but the topping family of products are just so good. I recently switched to their flagship A70 pro and D70 pro octo for my LCD-5's and I couldn't be happier. Topping just dominates in price to perf right now. Their lineup borderline make any dac, amp, or dac/amp combo from any other company irrelevant under $1000. Who else but topping is making an amp that puts out 12.6W @32 ohms for $500 that sounds THAT good.
Picked up a K11 and had HORRIBLE clipping issues with it on my PC. Sent it back thinking it may be defective got another new one same exact thing clipping all over the place at 48000 and up setting. Sent it back got the topping d3x pro+ and it's just better and it works.
Buy you a MacBook, you will have no problem with any of these amps/dac. And even better: MacBooks (including the MacBook AIR), from M2 models (so since 2022) have a high-quality headphone output compatible with all high-impedance headphones: so you don't even need an external DAC/Amp.
Hey Badseed! Pro tip: you can snag an ifi micro idsd signature (finale) at adorama for 299 rn... Represents the best value in dacamps right now.4w. Can power Dianas.
Please be on the lookout for a new DAC that has mic input with high quality sound with no hiss or background noise. As of today, the Schiit Hel plus is out of stock with no ETA on when it's available again. I want something high quality enough to drive high end IEMs. I was considering the Creative GC7 but now I'm not sure. Maybe the mayflower will go on sale.
My first Schitt gear is the Magni Unity that I ordered a couple days ago. Still waiting for delivery. I reviewed just about all those options you went through and figured Schitt has the most consistently positive reviews with no quirks of them all. I've heard about glitches with the K11. I'm not a fan of the limited inputs with the Schitt especially in case I want to run an external streamer to it (although it does have RCA pass through) using the DAC, but that's a sacrifice I was willing to make. Just starting out and will look for a pair of decent cans next. Thanks for the consolidated info. And the beard game is hard.
Still using my ASUS Xonar Essence STX and Sennheiser HD598's I bought about 12 years ago. With my setup I use the JamesDSP sink on Linux which was more superior than the ASUS/UniXonar Control Panel, headphones connected to 2.5mm to 3.5mm then 3.5mm to RCA directly to my sound card. then I have SPDIF / optical cable connected to my Prozor 192Khz Coaxial/Optical digital converter / bluetooth transmitter, and another optical cable connected from my TV to that digital converter, they both deliver rich SPDIF audio to my bluetooth speakers and has a toggle switch between audio on TV and PC.
There is one thing the Mayflower Arc has over the others, a ten year warranty. If you are really after a one and done option that MAY be worth the extra price.
I still run my Topping Dx1 as an all in one for years, cheap clean and has the output for studio monitors aswell. Every time i try my audiophile friends new setups they don't seem like necessary until something like his HD800s get plugged in.
At 61, never used a DAC before (however, I've watched a few videos previous to this gentleman's and I'm realizing that our phones and whatnot have DACs in them). So, let's see if I can grasp not only what a DAC is, but which one to get.
there are some pieces of gear like the Zen Dac that break rules with how well they run headphones compared to their on paper specs lol a big one is my old Fiio E10K, supposedly like 150mw into 32 OHM but I ran 600 OHM headphones on it with no issues lol, tempted to find what box I threw it in to test with some of my newer toys.
I'm all around the place right now, I have the JDS Atom Amp +, the Schiit Loki and for the DAC I'm still on the Apple dongle. I pair it with the HD660S. Maybe one day I'll try a "proper" DAC, it's just weird to spend that much to try to maybe hear a difference, but the Loki does a great job at that.
unrelated to this video but just wanted to say I picked up the maxwell per your recommendation and DAMN they are GOOD!!! Stoked to finally have a wireless set of cans where I don't feel like I'm sacrificing way too much quality to use
the statement that u need 100 bucks for amp and 100 bucks for DAC is not really true. Its about the right product. For example I bought 20 bucks dongle on aliexpress (for 2 bucks in sale, actually 10 of them) and soundwise they smoke any card and are on par with much more expensive stuff (except for power)
Ifi zen can has 3.5 watts 32ohms when used with a blanched dac and the schiit midgard at $219 does 4.8 watts at 32ohms Which is honestly a steal for the price
Thanks for the great video BadSeed. Based on your recommendation, I just had a Schitt Magni Unity Amp/Dac delivered and compared it to my Schiit Fulla E. More depth and detail, way more power. The Fulla E has 200mW into 32 ohms vs. 2.5W into 32 ohms for the Magni Unity. Compared on several songs doing a sound level match. Much deeper and fuller with better detail on the Magni Unity. Both were very clean sounding, but the deep full clean sound of the Magni Unity is far superior. Thanks again!!
Had the massdrop O2 dac/amp for about 3 years and it always had weird problems over usb. It totally crapped out on me recently so I’ve been waiting for this video. That new schiit magni combo unit is looking super cool and I like the price!
Probably too late but just wanted to come back to say thanks for the video. I ended up buying the Schiit magni unity based on your recommendation and it's exactly what I was looking for.
Excellent video! I've always LOVED everything Schiit. I've gone through a fair number of their stuff (modi/magni, valhalla, lyr, ending up with a Bifrost/Jotunheim stack). Tried a JDS labs O2 amp way before any of that which was great too. Also LOVE the 1990s which is a fantastic combo with the warmer tone of the Schiit stuff (at least what I have). Anyway, even though I love the look of Schiit and having a simple (and gorgeous) volume knob and aren't normally attracted to dongle-dacs, for dac/amp bang for the buck (at least for cans that aren't power hungry) you could do a lot worse than the Earmen Eagle. It's not a Bifrost - it doesn't quite have the depth or dynamics - but it's absolutely crystal, fast, detailed, flat, and incredible separation and imaging. Doesn't really push the 1990s properly but the fact that it takes up almost no space on a desk and also can be used with your phone in a pocket... A+++. But now you got me considering the Unity to use at work. :) [Edit: Upon testing again, the Eagle does just fine pushing the 1990s. About 50% volume of the Eagle starts pushing comfortable listening volume. So, definitely a contender for a great all-rounder for nearly any headphone.]
Been really thinking about trying out IEM's and I think after watching this one I will pick up the K11 and a pair of IEM's. Any recommendations for a good entry level pair?
Thank You for all the information. What's your favorite DAC / Amp in the 2-3K range? I have the newest upgraded version of the RME ADI 2/4 but it sounds like there are better options for just pure sound quality of the DAC and headphone amp. It was around $2500.00 I use LCD-5, Stellia, clear mg pros, DT1990 and 1770. Soon to add or swap for MM-500, Arya organic, and Empyrean II. What would be your choice to have the cleanest accurate sound. I produce music and a musician so I want to hear all the details of my recordings. I am going to upgrade my portable Apogee Groove to a Mojo 2 to start. Then upgrade a desktop DAC/AMP and the phones I listed. Any Suggestions or thoughts?
EVO 4 if it falls into this category? Bought some IEMs and want to use external mic but have monitoring.
@@badseedtechI can’t wait for that video. I’ve been looking for a solution to this rather than an audio interface/dacamp combo.
Is the magni unit better then the fiio k11 or gc7?
who cares bout dac/amps. i wanna know how you get your beard that straight and with no flyaways
+1
I would trade all the dac/amps in the world for a beard like that
Seriously...it's damn near paranormal...
fr its so majestic
Blow dried after shower with good beard balm will keep the beard nice and smooth/straight
Thank you! Subscribed!

Have had DX3 Pro+ for 2 years now as my first dac/amp and have no regrets. Never felt the need to look at other gear. Greatest purchase ever.
@@ToreOnTH-cam Are there no such problems on the K7? How does the sound differ from DX3 Pro+?

It's one of the best decisions I made
Now with the DX3 i hear more nuance in music and I can play DSDs, which sounds incredible....
What headphones are you using?

My IFI Zen 2 has been a great buy since I purchased it 2-3 years ago like you.

How do you connect this to UAD Apollo twin x?
Well sure, it's also almost $500. This list is about the $200 price range
I have both the Fiio K11 and K7 -- K11 has been regulated to my worksetup. I used it at my primary setup, where i regularly switch between a soundbar and headphones
and going in the menu to switch output was pissing me off to no end. The K7 makes it so easy. However, I never expereinced a volume problem. Turnin g it up or down results in no change: only the powerd soundbar itself dictates the volume
I also have the Zen dac V2 -- but that has been regelated to be sold off -- great unit but misses the oompf I needen, and the need to unplug headphones to activate the speaker output put me off
I just got the JDS Labs Atom Stack + secondhand with all the cables for $100.
I am looking for a portable DAC under $100 dollars. Please recommend me something. I like neutral or slightly bass boosted sound signature.
Do you have any problem with overheating when connected to PC?
Hi! I'm using a Fiio KA1 dongle DAC with a pair on Sennheiser HD 560S.
Would an upgrade to a desktop DAC like the Fiio K11 or K7 make a worth change in sound quality?
All you need is the $9 Apple usb-c to 3.5mm dongle for entry desktop/mobile.
I've had my JDS labs atom dac and amp and have had 0 complaints, the all plastic casing is definitely a let down but for how cheap they were they got the job done to power most of my headphones.
i got the DX3 Pro+ and Sundara, iam very satisfied, thank you for the recommendation
Sundaras are so so good.
Picked up the fiio k11 after watching this video and having some issues with the ifi zen dac 2. Loving it so far
You can also use it as a dac and add a amp i believe
Bad seed tech said the bluetooth is for connecting your phone as a source then the audio plays out of your speakers/headphones.

Uhh... If it was having electrical noise that bad when powered from USB from your computer? That's a sign you may want a new motherboard or PSU...

Dx3 pro+ vs fio k7 ???
Can power Dianas.
still using the FIIO K5 Pro from your first recommendation and still love it.
Topping DX3 pro+ is really good
I'm still running the old Sanskrit 2 and Asgard 3 to my BasX a2 and couldn't be happier.
If you're also not that scared of secondhand, look around and you can find crazy deals. I just bought a Magnius for 105 and Modius for 98 bucks
There is one thing the Mayflower Arc has over the others, a ten year warranty. If you are really after a one and done option that MAY be worth the extra price.
i have been using Topping dx3 pro+ for a while and i'm glad it still rock this day!!!
Do you use it for gaming by any chance? Wanted to know how it works with the pc voltage
So, let's see if I can grasp not only what a DAC is, but which one to get.
there are some pieces of gear like the Zen Dac that break rules with how well they run headphones compared to their on paper specs lol
a big one is my old Fiio E10K, supposedly like 150mw into 32 OHM but I ran 600 OHM headphones on it with no issues lol, tempted to find what box I threw it in to test with some of my newer toys.
I'm still using a DAC magic plus from Cambridge Audio.
its years old at this point so not sure if it sucks compared to newer stuff.
Been waiting for this video since start of the year lol, nice to see it finally manifested.
unrelated to this video but just wanted to say I picked up the maxwell per your recommendation and DAMN they are GOOD!!!
Using the Topping DX3 Pro+ for the last 4 years combined with my DT990 Pro and im very satisfied!
Great detail!
You should of done a full review of the JDS Atom 2 I think it has a really good value in this list
My vote goes to iFi ZenDac V2, it have balance output and True Bass and it drives most headphones.
Probably too late but just wanted to come back to say thanks for the video. I ended up buying the Schiit magni unity based on your recommendation and it's exactly what I was looking for.
Nice! Glad that worked out for you!
Thanks for the video. This helped me decide which one to use with my recent purchase of a Sennheiser HD 660 S2.
[Edit: Upon testing again, the Eagle does just fine pushing the 1990s.
Very happy to see this video with Christmas coming up! Great video as always!
Any chance you’ve looked at the HO150x if so what DAC would pair well with it in your opinion?
