Untraditional Encounter Methods In Pokemon

  • As the main to way battle and capture Pokemon, encounters are the backbone of the Pokemon series. Our future companions are hiding somewhere out in the tall grass, and its our duty to go and find them. But over the years, Pokemon has played and experimented with its formula for encounters in some really fun and unique ways- giving way to lots of unique gameplay and mechanics. Wild Pokemon come from all ways of life!
Today we dive head first into that experimentation as we look back on some of the great and unusual ways we can go about the process- untraditional encounters in Pokemon are truly a breath of fresh air. They allow us to tell and experience more stories in these games. Plus, Pokemon fishing is the best.
Hope you enjoyed this one folks, been grinding away at it for a while! This ended up being a really special project for me, it felt like at every turn my love for Pokemon and its gameplay was getting emphasized, this was a great reminder for one of the many reasons I've stuck with this series over the years, and not just gen 3 pokemon. Hope it can get you feeling the same way.
    Follow me around the internet:
    my twitter: / droomishw
    my twitch: / droomish_
check out my patreon: / droomish
Gameplay comes from Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Red, Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver, Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Sapphire, Pokemon FireRed, Pokemon LeafGreen, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD, Pokemon Platinum, Pokemon Pearl, and Pokemon Diamond, Pokemon Black 2, Pokemon White 2, Pokemon Omega Ruby, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, Pokemon Scarlet, and Pokemon Violet. #pokemon #pokemonscarletandviolet #pokemonemerald

It's pretty funny that the fishing in pokemon leads to an RPG monster battle. Imagine if you reeled in a largemouth bass but once it's out of the water it takes one look at you, pulls the hook out of its mouth, and starts trying to kick your ass

I think they'd still be fairly common with surfing being a primary mechanic in every game and all of them taking place on coastlines, but I could a couple of pokes like feebas, Luvdisc, or luminion not being made without dedicated fishing, since they're mechanically tied to it specifically.

The DexNav is a culmination of both the PokeRadar and the Shaking grass from Gen V. Shaking Grass could give you Pokemon that weren't normally available in just the tall grass (Audino is exclusive to it) and in ORAS after getting the National Dex you could find all sorts of non-Hoenn Pokemon on routes.

    • @jaernihiltheus7817
      @jaernihiltheus7817 ปีที่แล้ว +28

It also incorporates another feature from black&white 2: in its pokedex you can sort by location, and each location has a level of completion (haven't seen all available mons->have seen all of them->have caught all of them).
There are also a couple of side quests in bw2 to emphasize the feature, especially early on.

I really enjoy the odd overworld encounters, like Sudowoodo, Snorlax, Kecleon, and the various Pokemon you see posing as item pickups. It really feels like you're encountering those Pokemon as they would exist in the wild, rather than suddenly being ambushed by something that really shouldn't be ambushing you, like a Caterpie. Headbutting trees in Gen II and IV felt like a more organic way to encounter bugs and such that would generally have no reason to accost a human, and I wish there were more ways to find Pokemon that felt like how you'd find animals in real life, just like fishing. Maybe there should be a way to find bug Pokemon hiding under rocks and use bird calls to lure in Duckletts. Perhaps you could even scatter breadcrumbs to attract Pidoves and hand-feed berries to Skwovets. I could honestly go on about the various ways players could hypothetically seek out specific Pokemon rather than rolling RNG dice by doing donuts in the grass with their bicycle. There is something to be said for the comedy of "oh no I walked through the tall grass and now I'm covered in Spinaraks getthemoffgetthemoffgetthemoff," but the games don't really play tall grass encounters off that way, anyway, which makes it just a missed opportunity to make that part of the game more special.

Now that Game Freak has implemented a proper open world (however flawed it is right now) and committed to having a limited Dex in each game, hopefully they’ll start to experiment with more specialised encounter mechanics in future games. It was sad (though inevitable) to lose the National Dex but including such a huge quantity of Pokemon would surely make it harder to implement this kind of thing to a decent degree.

In Crystal, I did a poison type challenge and early on, I only had Gastly and Beedrill. I wanted a good poison type just past Violet City, so I fished with the Old Rod for Tentacool. On that route, it has a 5%chance of spawning with the Old Rod, so I took my chances and fished for a while. I did get Tentacool, but it was actually replaced by Qwilfish because of a mass outbreak happening right after I caught it. Qwilfish turned out to be awesomely strong, the best poison type on my team! Ever since then, I've wondered if the next water type team I play should all be Pokémon I fish for.

You also didn't talk about the other special encounters, the shaking grasses. In Unova, there are multiple ways to find a unic Pokémon or item by stepping on either a shaking grass on the routes, a cloud of dust in the caves, or the ripples while surfing, and the ripples have even rarer encounters if you fish on them. This feature sort of returned in XY with the shaking bushes and the Pokemon falling from the cave's roof.

For me fishing in Pokemon is very interesting, since I feel like it offers a gate into a different culture. In my country you need to visit classes and pass an exam in order to get a fishing permit, so it's a very inclusive club and you don't see a lot of people doing it as a result, but in the world of Pokemon (maybe also Japan?) there are just fishers you might run into randomly

Honestly I started to complete the pokedex a view years ago and it completely changed te game for after 20 something years of playing.
It slowly grew to a living dex, to a catch all Safari mons, to the low encounter pokemon.
I’ve hunted Grimer for hours in Celadon City and hunted a Lv. 25 Magcargo in Mt. Wmber, even found a shiny before that!
It is so much fun to actually plan out what to catch and how you approach it. Pokemon went like ‘catch a strong or cool pokemon’ to ‘I’ll hunt this down and train it by hand’.

I do like scarlet/violet's overworld encounters, but I also hope in future titles the pathfinding for wild Pokémon improves as so they will naturally avoid paths, roads, the edge of towns and the like. That way if I simply want to stroll across the region I needn't worry about accidently running into a Pokémon, coming to a complete standstill like a car hitting a moose and ruining the pacing my little journey had. And conversely if I want to search for wild Pokémon their habitats are further distinguished from civilization and the Pokémon accustomed to that environment.

One thing I would love to see be included in every game is the height and weight thing Gen 4 and its remakes have, especially since I’m autistic so just looking at the numbers and picturing in my head what that would really mean and the space no dimensions and relative to myself and all that is quite the struggle so it’s a helpful visual. i kinda wish you could use sweet scent/honey/[insert new key item for purpose here] in grass/caves to trigger a *different set* of encounters to simply walking through it, like how with water you always just get the basic tentacools, magicarp and wingulls if you're just surfing across the water, BUT if you FISH there's this whole list of much more interesting pokemon that you're never going to see if you don't actually take the time to try to enounter them.
Oh! kinda like HGSS radio's Hoenn and Sinnoh sound, once you unlocked those every old route you'd already been to held new potential for more pokemon that you hadn't yet seen! If players just had the ability to flip on pokemon march wherever they were to unlock all the extra encounters(maybe different tracks to reflect the different levels of old/good/super rod), or lullabye as a not-quite-repel it'd really benefit random encounters.
i understand the appeal of overworld encounters for realism and finding specific pokemon, but random ones also have their own factors that make them fun, especially if there's ways to modify how you intentionally interact with the system.

I am so focused on progressing as fast as I can to build my Pokémon Team as soon as I can, so having constant trainer encounters has me constantly playing the stealth game on routes, so having them as an optional thing is appreciated to me.

I still remember playing Gold, which was my first own Pokémon game when I was a kid.
I'm not sure how I found out, maybe an NPC told me about it, that you can use headbutt against trees to make Pokémon fall out.
I was already super far into the game, maybe even already beat it.
I instantly looked if I had a TM for it and taught the move to a random mon in my PC. I got so excited that I could find new Pokémon this way! I spent the next hour just headbutting different trees in the region to see what I could find.
I didn't have any internet back then either, so I couldn't have looked any of this up. Was just me finding this in the game.

Man, your segment about the Safari Zone got me caught in the feels. I started thinking about a shiny Heracross I caught in a gen 3 SZ years ago~ I dunno if it had as low a catch rate as my teen brain imagined, but I practically hyperventilated for a half hour before I could bring myself to throw the first ball. He was my lil buddy :)

While overworld encounters are huge, it's a shame that all the untraditional encounters brought up here dont exist anymore those include Dexnav, fishing, Safari Zone, Hordes, SOS battles, Hidden grottos & more.

It is the most fun I have had with pokemon in years (with the exception of a few huge grinds).
It's so satisfying finding rare and unique mons and seeing the boxes get filled one by one

I like nontraditional encountes because they make pokemon feel more like actual creatures rather than sprites loaded when you walk in some grass. Of course there are some kinds of Pokémon what you can only find by fishing and rummaging though the grass just like how in the real world you find animals in different stange habitats in the real world like under a rotten log and the tops of trees

Maybe I'm the one watching the wrong content, but I really appreciate seeing unrestrained enjoyment of old AND new Pokemon features! I feel like the fanbase has gotten very negative about everything, really, so they'll completely ignore the great parts of the games to nitpick about the bad. Watching this was super refreshing!
In fact, even I'm not immune to complaining about certain features, but seeing you praise some of those in this video spun things I didn't like before into a new perspective! I LOVED ScarVio's story and gym system, but I really am not a fan of open worlds, and I was disappointed by the fact that they'd been leaning more into that over time... When I watched this though I realized hey, this is actually a really neat turn to take Pokemon into, even from an objective lens instead of my opinionated one. Super great, I really look forward to watching more!

as someone doing a livedex I absolutely hate hidden grottos. the fact it's a 5% chance to reset a grotto every 256 steps and that there's not only multiple 1% encounters with exclusive pokemon but also THE most rare pokemon encounter of all time (0.25% with pinsir/heracross) makes it a nightmare to deal with. Why is it only a 5% chance to reset? why couldn't the grotto just guaranteed reset every 256 steps. It's so annoying.

9:30 You forgot to mention that Pokémon Colosseum had Pokémon with Egg moves from past trainers, but Pokémon XD had Pokémon with unique moves that they could not learn in any way, and even some Pokémon with moves that are STILL impossible to get any other way. (Like a Scyther with Morning Sun.)

This felt like a pure stream of consciousness. I think you need to work on your pacing and delivery because right now I sometimes have a hard grasp comprehending really what you are trying to convey or what the theme/message of the video is. An intro should not have to be that long either.

Final Fantasy XV ruined all other JRPG fishing for me. Its so detailed and feels as realistic as a video game could be. Combined with being able to drive around a countryside that doesn't look too dissimilar from the landscape around me it just felt amazing to go fishing in FFXV.

wonderful video! highlights every reason why i love the new overworld pokemon, i used to always get lost in caves if i didn't have a repel on because i'd forget what was going on after a battle. i cannot stand safari zones, though. i prefer the skill-based catching of lets go & arceus, i'd be happy if i never had to go through a safari zone again
