- In 2021 when BMW released images of the new front end they were using on the 3 series and 4 series cars this year, car enthusiast were very polarized. Fast forward, it's almost 2022, and we've had some time to sit with the design and decide how it is.
Today we got to take some time with the new 2021 2022 BMW 4 series 430i model and see what the hype is about now that we can get past the front end of the vehicle.
First impressions are just that the car is a bit quirky. BMW has made the new generation 430i to be a very entry level car. There's nothing wrong with an entry level car at all, except at this price point with the model 3 providing so many features including auto-pilot standard, it's hard to see who the 2021 BMW 430i coupe is really aimed at with its cheap materials and un refined driving experience.
Hopefully this gives some insight into what the BMW brand is about and why I don't think buying the recent entry level BMW's make much sense.

Personally, I love the front grille! Balanced and sexy to me. Different strokes for different folks.
Same, I get it’s not a look for everyone, but holly balls it’s so annoying listening to every person review a new 3/4 series complain about the grill for 5-10 mins, we get it, you don’t like it, but that’s subjective, deal with it and move on.
Looks good on the 4 series.. the 3 not so much..dont know why, probably just proportions and the silver detailing.
It's just funny how polarizing the grill is for different people. I just think it looks bad on the base model 4 series or 3 series. Once you add the m-sport bumpers or anything else, they don't look too bad, in my opinion.

@@raysyd5643 I dont get why BMW is trying to impress the Chinese market by making their cars look more Chinese...people bought them to get a taste of european luxury "sports" cars, I doubt moving towards bigger grills made any positive difference on that market and it certainly didnt help bmw identity crisis in Europe/NAmerica market
The difference between the M4 and the 430 is like +80k...don't say just get the M4...hahaha
I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind the grill.
I don't hate it, it just looks a little goofy. It looks cool on the m models though. Do you think the next generation is going to have a similarly sized grill?
I ordered the 430i with the M sport package, I think the grill is fine too, I just think everybody just jumping on the band wagan on the grill thing, Every 430i review say the same exact thing, I like the changed, Lexus, Audi, Toyota, honda they all have big ass grills on some of there cars but everyone giving BMW a hard time about it, The 430 is not a race car, I think must people that want more horse power might want to look at the M3-M4 and you don;t even have to get the 2022 get a late model m4-m3 if you care about the being fast, Must people going in to buy a 430 already now what the horse power is, Yea price is a little up there, Neh don't what a tesla that car is every where, every body and there mama owns one make the car boring .
@@raysyd5643 I was talking to the guy at the BMW dealership about it and he said this seems to be direction they’re going so we shouldn’t be surprised to see it on more models in the future. I suppose they’ll revert back to the smaller grill if they get enough negative feedback or their sales suffer.
@@34skyline It does make the car boring because everyone has it, but there's probably a reason why everyone has it right..... I still own several bmw's, but after working for Tesla, it's just the superior car in terms of driving, economics, tech, and reliability. The only reason I would buy a bmw over a model 3 is because I want something more fun and engaging. The 430i unfortunately was not that fun to me and especially not for the price. just my 2 cents

The car is slow to me sorry. I literally have owned like 10 bmw's. As an enthusiast, this ain't it, but then again, any real enthusiast buying a BMW probably already knows that this isn't the car for the them.

Congrats! It isn't a bad car by any means, I just don't think cars like this at this price point are going to be able to compete with EV's for much longer. Personally I've been around BMW's my whole life, so there is a decent amount of Nostalgia related to the brand. That said, I'm looking for a fun engaging driving experience when I purchase a BMW and this car generally felt pretty tame to me.
@@raysyd5643 IN this I think you have the right remembrance and the 5 series I drove before was my recollection of the performance and good ride. The new coupe is a little more stiff than I recall and the steering and ride far from it. But , I am driving the new convertible with a Mustang as my comparison...there is none. The ride of the latter , the performance and handling was far inferior and even the bigger engine didn't put in in the luxury market my new Beemer is. Friends driving both agree with me as the people at BMW must have realized that this could be a defining moment for their new ground up car. I have only an inkling what they did to fine tune a car so I need a tech to get the tech controls all figured out. Whew!

I have bad news for you you better brush up on BMW history. The BMW 430 M sport package is incredibly agile and although it won't set an acceleration record it's certainly respectable. 300 foot pounds of torque at 1500 RPMs incredible. Early 1970's 2002 put them on the map with almost no horsepower. I truly appreciate a somewhat affordable car that has looks and performance that doesn't break the bank. The majority of people don't have 100k for a M model or 70k plus for a m440. I think it's a fantastic car at its price point.
I really like the new grill! Looks aggresive and modern! Makes the smaller grill Beemers look dated! I will say that the new grill looks way better without a license plate!

On the m sport and m models I like them too
The problem is the Model 3 is atrocious looking. As much as I dislike the 430i grill, it looks much better. The Model 3 has more in common with a generic, sci-fi people mover. It has none of the heritage of vintage motoring. Just my .02 though.
I honestly like this explanation a lot. There is no heritage of design and my largest issue is that the model 3 reminds me of the Prius where it's just a good basic car for everyone. Overall I still believe the model 3 is the better overall car, but I can understand not wanting to ride around in a "Prius" for $40k
The 4 cylinder engine has 255 horsepower and the 6 cylinder engine has 382… and you’re also showing the entry level 4 series without any tech… if you get it fully loaded you get a 12 inch digital cockpit and 10 inch entertainment display along with other goodies ✌🏽

I have one as a loaner right now and I get exactly what he’s saying. It’s a great daily and I can understand why someone would buy it, but if you’re a BMW fan and you buy one of these thinking it’s a raw sporty feeling BMW, it’s just not

It's just on this super base model 4 series that I feel that way honestly. On the black cars as well as the m-sport / m3 / m4 it looks reasonable. It's just a very aggressive item on some of the less aggressive models in the line.
Please do an actual review rather than just a bad click bait ..
Are you asking someone to put in some actual work and effort behind a “review” instead of just talking about their subjective opinion and why THEY don’t like the thing, so you should also NOT like the thing??; Don’t forget the part where they didn’t care to do some basic research and just inaccurately represented the specs (420HP???)
The base model 430i is trash and the lack of m sport bumpers makes the car look strange with the large grill. The 330i in my experience was all around a better car than the similar 4 series.

Sorry if your buying it for the brand the non kidney grille will never make it, just as much as an outdated color on a new model. I have to visually like what I see. I'm sure it performs just fine, but if I don't like it, I don't like it.

My 2021 430i M sport is great. Not sure why one would show a base car as the majority of the people would not even buy it. Very easy to tune or swap out the turbos for additional HP.
Actually a lot of people buy the base model. I'm more trying to let people who don't know how trash a base model bmw is know not to buy the base. You get a big grill on easily the worst bmw in your series line up.
I get what you’re saying. In my old 328i, I felt every bump and pothole which I didn’t realize how much I love this feel til i bought the 430ix, which I feel nothing on the road 😞 btw, I love the grill which is what attracted me to the 430ix in the first place lol 😂

You will have the same feeling with all modern cars. You long for the old days. And M cars are just not affordable for most people. At least they can pretend in the 430i, right? 🙂
100% m4 F82 was last amazing 4 series model, they destroyed all in that new model. I dont understand how people liked it! thanks for real review!
I love my 2021 430i BMW. The grill is awesome and sets it apart from the other BMWs. This guy is wrong.
The 2025 midlife cycle update opted to keep the grille. That’s one of my favorite things about the look of this car

Ha ha - I am on the verge of buying the convertible ( M sport of course ) - it really was enjoyable to listen to a young person’s opinion . I used to be that age once . I had to chuckle at times but overall a great video.
as long as you get a m sport, I'm sure you'll enjoy the car. Just wanted to let people know as a rule of thumb, stay away from entry level luxury cars with no options.

A very vague and wandering review of a car with little actual road feedback. Saying , "I'm sure this car is fast enough.." kinda sums up your whole attitude about the car and lack of reporting. I felt the same way when I tried the coupe a first....because I didn't have the vehicle tuned to my driving style at all. Take the steering, too vague and loose, but the service attendant took it to sport steering and that added to my enjoyment. There were other adjustments that came as well to suit my driving tastes as well...like taking the lane changing warning off since I know how to use my side mirrors and hate the vibration the geeks gave it. Then too. the car is only a fraction of a second slower than the beefier M440 because the larger 20 inch tires and extra weight on the latter vs. the base slow it down . AFter all this car was designed to be light, not really heavy with thicker treads. This really new car from the wheelbase on up is almost 300 pounds lighter in my convertible than the old coupe convertible of years gone by and it "flys" (my wife's remark) and very stable and sound proof since the new roof is the thickest pf all in the ragtop market.
The front end is a dramatic change from the old "skinny" grilles that they had in the past and is being somewhat copied on other newer models and I like it's threatening and bold look!
Now here is something that no one has said: In ECO MODE, driving from Marco Island to downtown Naples, over 20 miles each way, I got 47 mpg! Yes , I averaged only 42-45mph and missed a lot of lights ..but caught some as well in the AM traffic. I showed the readout to my heavy footed wife t...lot of good that did.
So, I'll take the new , bolder 4 series convertible that flies and can give me a helluva lot of savings at the fuel pumps..thank you for letting me respond.
Honestly, that's how I felt about the car. Nothing engaging or exciting here. Overall, I am an enthusiast and this review was more to let someone who doesn't know, know that an entry level bmw, audi, mbz, is not the fun car with the emotion that built these brands. These days the entry level car can be "fun" but it in no way gives that sports car feel or bmw heritage. You just have a big @ss grill on a slow car that doesn't do anything even remotely special except..... save on gas. Might as well go buy a model 3 if that's what you care about.

That's pretty much my rule for buying BMW's also. I'm surprised how good the m440 is even compared to the m4. Enjoy your car!

I reviewed the base model 4 series yes, to let those who don't know, that car is trash. Personally I've only owned the m4 myself. Just because I review a car doesn't mean I own it. If you like the base 4 series enjoy it.... you're clearly not a car enthusiast.
Ray, I appreciate your honest review. Have you looked into the new i4? I was debating between the 430i, i4, and the Tesla Model 3. What are your thoughts on the new electric BMW i4?
Don’t buy the Model 3, rattling noises, wind noise, sentry mode don’t work the build quality. Pls don’t waste ur money and time with one.
I think the new i series bmw are actually really nice. the new i7 is really nice in my opinion.

I am thinking to lease the Msport 440i or 430i gran coupe well equipped. But I am hoping to lease a new c43 2022. I really like that.
If you equip the car well, it's a great car that you will definitely enjoy. If you enjoy driving, just stay away from the base level stripped down version.
If the 430i and 230i doesn't match the 370z in 0-60 and 0-200, IF NOT match but atleast close by a few milliseconds, then I'm stuck with the fugly 3 decade old 400z

Yeah my wife just bought this because of the front grill and its a convertible but she kept worrying about water coming in from the top hahaha

The earlier models may have hit the US sooner..if you call 5 or 6 months earlier. I waited 3 months for my convertible...glad I did...and, for comparison , US cars took longer.
I went to Sizzler and ordered a steak and it was actually pretty good. But every time I go to Mastro's steakhouse in Beverly Hills and order their Wagyu rib eye steak, it's always much bigger, and better tasting than the Sizzler's steak. So that makes the Sizzler steak trash! When I want to eat a steak, I want it to be the best steak I can buy and not worry about how much it's going to cost me. Yeah, I know some people might really like Sizzler steaks, and even thought it's actually a good steak for the price for most people who can't afford to go go Mastro's, the Sizzler steak compared to Mastro's steak, is still trash!
I'll never understand why people just can't afford to pay and extra $30+K for a Mastro's Wagyu rib eye and have to settle for a trash Sizzler steak instead (even though after I actually ate the Sizzler steak I thought it was actually pretty good)?

No, the new Mercedes interiors are awkward, noisy plus rattling (if you don't believe - videos are all over YT), far far away from solid. Big TV screens inside and too much fancy LEDs for teenage kids while their engline lacks power. BMW all the way
I don't drive a car staring at a 12 or 14 inch monitor...at nite, they are treacherous and not needed to keep you on the road safely. Traffic cues are audible on many as well.
You are right about the "tame" feeling, I went for a test drive last night and boy! what a slow car! I seen some race chips out there that improves the shifting points and increase the HP to 300 so I guess is a bit worth it for the entry level BMW newbie. Pedal commander and a race chip def will wake up this car.

Why are you comparing a 430i to a 335i? You should be comparing this to a 3/428i and it would be much more comparable if not a better driving experience than those.
Pretty much because thats the 3 series that I've had the most experience in. I actually have a 330i review coming and let me tell you, way better car in my experience.

Hi Ray, thanks for the review. I totally agree with your issues, the beaver teeth don’t bother me too much vs the kidney shape. I do think this is a chic car or wife’s car, I guess if someone had the cash and wanted performance they would get the 440 or M4. I think I’m going to get the 430i drive convertible for the wife anyway, hard to find a good soft top in this size. Take care and thank you again for your candour.
