    For yellowed plastic. You could try H2O2 solution under UV. Plenty to find on TH-cam. Great video BTW!

    To say that episode was entertaining is a gross understatement🤣. For the clear speedo cover you can get a product called Polywatch which is used for cleaning and buffing vintage wristwatch glasses. BUT!!! first of all try toothpaste and a tiny bit of water, dip a cloth into it and buff it carefully, I have restored loads of watches like that.

For the speedo cover, you might think to try Meguires scratch 2.0, as it will cut the milky laters off, but still leave is smooth and shiny - just a karate kid ‘wax on/wax off’ with a decent cotton cloth, although you might need a few rounds.

    I said, the gearchange mechanism was different Ben when you picked up the car. :) The clutch release bearing shaft often seizes due to dissimilar metals & corrosion, but you can lever using a bar, heat and penetrating oil etc, once loose there's a oil holes in the aluminium casting to prevent seizing later. I did revive my clear speedo cover, using fine wet and dry and re polishing, be careful you don't break that fuel gauge. The outer choke cable needs to be held in the bracket, there should be a threaded screw in this, have a look at that PL17 on the trailer, then adjust the movement and it'll be good to go. :) Funny watching you & Rob do the dance with the engine, you can put them in by yourself, but you know about it. It is also easier if you take four of the screws that hold the bumper engine mount subframe, and let it pivot downwards. You need the gear change lever to be in the middle when at rest in neutral, and if you look at the spherical ball... that will be 3rd in the up plane, 2nd in the down plane, first is towards you and up, fourth is away from you and down from the neutral position. You need to adjust the cables at the gear linkage... you also might have an air leak from the inlet flanges too, as you disturbed it. Reverse is towards you and down, but you pull the gear lever outwards from the column.

    • @bananabrooks3836
      @bananabrooks3836 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is he in 3rd most of the laps of the yard then, away from the driver and up?

    • @mikecrane2782
      @mikecrane2782 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bananabrooks3836 Hard to tell, but the engines don’t set off in third, but if the cable is in the wrong place at the gearbox end, the selector forks and gear lever are in the right place. You also can’t select all the gears because the gear lever mechanism hits the metalwork inside the steering column cowling

    Don't know if anyone else has suggested it elsewhere but you can polish plastics using toothpaste as it is an extremely fine cutting compound. Used this to polish plastics on my old hand held video games (Astro Wars). That should take off the ingrained discolouration without scratching the finish on the plastic facia.

  • @twocvbloke
    @twocvbloke ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yellowed plastics can be brought back with soaking in Hydrogen Peroxide (plenty resources on this, look up "retr0briting", easy process), but, thi all depends on the plastic, not sure the clear speedo housing here would do much, but it's worth a shot, and as for the cloudiness, if it's inside the plastic, then, it's knackered, if it's surface stuff, then something like Peek or Autosol polishing compund can cut through it, usually, again depending on the plastic, if the cloudiness is inside the plastic itself, then it's shot and just have to make excuses when the rozzers ask if you know how fast you were going... :P

    • @cloudninephoto

    It’s the assumptions that get us! Forgotten cars always have a frozen clutch, don’t they? It will release with a quick drive. Err, not if it is out of adjustment and doesn’t release the pressure plate. I envy you the thrill of solving that one.
    You almost wonder if that was the fault that caused it to be abandoned in the first place.

    Regarding any plastic: If you have a grinder/buffer to use, put a buffing wheel (or 2) and use plastic polishing compound (a cream - or actually I think any polishing compound will work). It will polish that plastic and make it look like new except for the yellowing that comes with age. You will never get it to look good doing it by hand.

    ooh, it uses a graphite throwout doohickey, basically a big round pencil (also basically the same as the brushes in an electric motor, graphite is "slippery" on metal surfaces), doesn't really matter if it's cracked up, does matter if it's worn down though cos you can't sharpen it up like a pencil, cos it looks like it's worn to a stump so could do with looking for a new one at somepoint, assuming they're available... :P

    • @Laz_Arus
      @Laz_Arus หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm a bit late to the party but that would have been my suggestion also. JB Weld proper (not the quick set variant) would have been successful I reckon as I've used it to great success on an aluminium fixture that had engine coolant flowing through it. Some additional braces like Ben used would have helped of course, but just a liberal buildup of JB Weld in and around the break would be fine, IMHO.
