  • After the first will it run episode I got in contact with the previous owners of this rare Vanden Plas and they gave me the full story on how it became abandoned for 32 years in there garage, I then decided the right thing to do would be to get the car to a good driveable useable state and take it up to visit them - but I only had two weeks to do it!

Being a Southern guy from Georgia, I have to say it warms my soul to see an English guy with a beautiful Ford F 250 in the background, and learning so much about what you guys use to drive. Maybe that's why we fight so well together, we are cut from the same stock.

Meeting the family at the end made this video into so much more. Just wonderful to see and hear the memories. Reminds me of when PeteC took Swampy the MK3 Cortina back to the family of the original owner. Putting these old cars back on the road is worth while in itself, but adding the personal touch takes it to another level. Just wonderful to see her back on the road. Great job, lets hope she finds a good home in the future.

Absolutely loved this series. A Damask Red Allegro was my first ever car and I spent lots of time peering into the engine bay. The underneath shots brought back a lot of memories too. I can still remember where everything was!
The rust spots are in exactly the same place as mine and for its day, are remarkably few. Of all the Allegro's well publicised issues, rust wasn't really one of them. Most of the examples I clambered over in scrapyards in the mid-80's were pretty rust-free compared to the other vehicles rotting away beside them.
History has been unkind to the Allegro. It could and should have been a great car. As you've demonstrated, it does have some redeeming features. The late Harris Mann's original sketches show a much sleeker design to what finally emerged. Internal and external politics and poor management conspired to produce what we know today. It deserved better.

Loving the journey of the Allegro perfect balance and totally agree with your preference of not over sanitising the history and character out of a car I can’t stand cars that look more pristine than they came out of the factory, that’s more a homage to the mechanics than the car. I had an Allegro 1750 Sport back in the day and it was terrible and eventually self destructed but I love your little “Vanden Plas”, keep us laughing too it makes it so enjoyable.

Such a fantastic old car! Here in the US, non sports model BL cars are quit the rarity and I don’t believe the Allegro was ever officially imported here! I’d love to own an old Austin Sedan from the late 1960s or early 1970s, but trying to locate parts for them presents a real challenge, short of ordering and paying to have them shipped across the pond!

Meanwhile, you weren’t kidding when you said you were good with the pudding and rattle can. You and I share a misspent youth, I think. I sculpted an Alfasud, once upon a time. Some very structural plastic on that, but it looked the business! I even bought some parts off it, when I stumbled across the same car in a scrappy, a couple of years later. All my isopon looked fine, but the metal it was attached to had vanished.

Loved the bit where you started to attack the nsf wing/corner, took off the sidelight/indicator lens, attempted (and failed) to remove the housing, then moved straight onto grinding/sanding down around the arch - it had me in giggles thinking what you would have said to yourself at the point of giving up on removing it, but I guess we can all guess 😂

It's not often a family can see their old car again like that, I sometimes wonder what happened to a lot of my dad's old cars that he had over the years and whether they're still out there somewhere (most likely they all ended up as scrap though, knowing his propensity for newspaper and body filler repairs!), Skoda Estelle, Rover SD1, Vauxhall Chevettes, Austin Montegos & a Maestro, even his Citroen 2CV6 Dolly in Green & White, not so much the later cars (Kia Shuma, Hyundai Lantra, Vauxhall Corsa poverty-spec model, etc.), just the now-classics, if he'd held onto them in a warehouse, he'd be rich now... :P
