  • Sold from 2006 - 2011, the Mk2 Yaris is an interesting prospect for those who want a reliable, practical small car. But is it actually any good?
    Model on test is a 2010 1.3 VVT-i TR (mk2 / second generation XP90)

    One of the best cars I've owned is my 2009 Toyota Yaris. Obviously a different car vs my 2009 Volvo V70, but the Yaris is honestly just phenomenal. Comparing the two the Yaris probably wins in everything except top speed and comfort, it's incredibly snappy and just a great car for its size and price. The Volvo has a bit more raw power, but in a drag race it'd be pretty even or the Yaris might even win.

    I’m in the US and I have the sedan version. It actually has a pretty decent sized trunk. Rear seats have good room. We also got the 1.5L VVT engine so I’m sure it has a bit more power. Not fast but peppy and great handling. Will cruise at 75-80 on the highway smoothly. Mine is the auto and the trans feels decent. If you are braking downhill it will even shift down and hold the gear until you start to hit the gas again.

      We have a 1.3 Yaris (2016) and are looking to upgrade. The newer ones in the UK market seem to be 1.5 rather than 1.3. I'm not sure why Toyota has done this, as it now costs more to tax (tax based on emissions). Doesn't seem any better performance either (, unless I've misread the specs).

    I had to buy a car in a hurry during the pandemic when work and funds were difficult. I regularly drive 1000km from Uk to the continent so it had to be something which was utterly reliable but also relativly cheap. It came down to a choice of 2, either a Jaz or a Mk2 Yaris. I ended up with the Yaris and it is everything expected. Yaris is the most reliable model from one of the 2 worlds most reliable makes. I have gone from 80k miles to 100k miles and the only thing I have replaced was a wheel stud which I broke. The only thing I would say, is if you buy one, rust proof it underneath as soon as you get it as the underbody factory paint peals off after 10 years even though the outside paint looks like new. The 1.33 VTI engine is wonderfull. Powerfull if you thrash it but also plenty of tourque if your lazy changing gear. Mine has the 6 speed manual box which is wonderful on the motorway. Its only doing 2800 rpm at 70 mph so its like driving a much bigger car. Nice for my 14 hour trips and remarkable for such a small car. I also have a Toyota IQ which is the fun version of the Yaris - same mechanics but totally different character.

    • @JJonCars
      @JJonCars  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Awesome. Got to love Toyotas for their longevity and quality. I doubt they had huge content crossing journeys in mind when they designed it, but it sounds like its handling them like a champ. That 2800 RPM on the motorway is really impressive as you say!

      I have the same engine, 1.33, 6 gears. How many oil it consumes ? My Yaris arrives to 140.000 km and it consumes 1/1.25 litres of oil in 10.000 km.
      I use 5W-30, the oil change is made 1 year/10.000 km.
      Toyota says that it is reparable but it will be very expensive.

    • @jonathanwebb8307
      @jonathanwebb8307 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Andrea-qp6mo I have not measured how much oil mine uses, it is not much and less than yours. I add a little top up 2 or 3 times between services which is annually about 1000 miles / 16000km. less than a litre in total. The engines are noted to use oil and so do need to be checked regularly. With a consumption of a litre every 10,000 KM I would live with it and just top up regularly. Only think about repairs if its very smokey or fails its test.

At the time, I was very much torn between one of these, or an Aygo/C1/107..., and the clang of the Aygo doors swayed my decision. The Yaris is that bit more of a grown up car. Engine wise, I really like the 1.0 litre, that 3-cylinder growl, and the engine is renowned for it's reliability and unburstable nature. The multimode transmission is one of the worst things about the MK2 Yaris. My dad had both the MK1 pre-facelift Yaris with torque converter and MK2 Facelift Yaris multimode gearbox. The MK1 was silky smooth and easily more refined, the multimode is unreliable and extremely jerky to the point it became uncomfortable in town speeds.
    This was at a time when Honda also tried to do the same with the Jazz MK2, the pre-facelift version had a semi auto i-shift, but they switched to the CVT in the facelift model, just like Toyota with the MK3 Yaris

    • @JJonCars
      @JJonCars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They all seemed to be doing it around that time didn't they, if it wasn't automated manual it was CVT. What was wrong with a good old torque converter? The gearbox in my CLK is excellent 😄

    • @sha22276

      @@JJonCars definitely true, I know the i20, Rio and Swift has them but they are 4 speed. torque converter in those cars are often inefficient, my mum's Kia Rio has it, and it's not great for economy.

    • @sha22276
      @sha22276 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JJonCars The CVT has been fine for me, it is not stepped, it just works like any other CVT, the difference is you can use the paddles to "downshift" for example when overtaking without any lag from the cvt, it still won't simulate stepped changes in sport mode, unless you actually use the paddles it's called CVT7 I think, because of the 7 possible shifts. It's still a CVT so you can go over 45 mph in "1st gear" if you used the manual mode. It's quieter than the manual on the motorway also.
      Unfortunately the problem with the CVT in the MK2 and MK3 Jazz is the lack of spare parts, if something goes wrong, you have to replace the entire gearbox, this is a major problem as specialists don't want to touch it otherwise.
      My car is at 73,000 miles and it's making a slight bearing noise from the gearbox, it doesn't cause any problems and I was told it wasn't serious, the only solution is to get a new gearbox because honda doesn't make parts for it! Apart from that I love the car, especially the magic seats and driving position.

      Motoring journalists are ridiculous. All they're bothered about is how fast a car is. I never take their advice. Videos like this are far, far better.

      Indeed, almost all journalists are obsessed with how fast they can get a car round a corner. Im perfectly capable of putting a car on the limit and getting tyres to sing, however the number of occasions I have done this in the last decade is zero. Reliablity, safety and comfort are what is important to me.

    In my opinion a city car should be an automatic. Unfortunately the Yaris has the disastrous MMT auto box. Why oh why did Toyota feel the need to install that junk when their traditional auto boxes were perfect?

      Lots of manufacturers of the time were doing this.. The Honda jazz's i-shift gearbox (automated manual) was also not very good... I think they made the CO2 emissions lower and tax look better on paper.

    • @jonathanwebb8307
      @jonathanwebb8307 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I prefer an Auto but when buying an old car, its better to buy a manual - more relaible and will give lots of warning of impending failure thus never leaving you on a recovery truck. The 6 speed box on the Yaris is wonderful and allows quiet comfortable cruising at 70 mph with low fuel consumption.

      I have both and same mechanics - 1.33 , 6 speed manual. Although thenmechanics are the same the 2 cars have a totally different character. The Yaris is imensly practical. Carrys 5 and I have had big furniture pieces in mine. The IQ is the sawn off version and is the most fun you can have in a car. The only negative for the IQ is it is not as well sound insulated as the Yaris and as I do a lot of motorway driving I may add sound deadening.

      I would say its inconspicuous or boring rather than ugly. Unfortuatly car manufacturers do not want to make attractive small cars as they want you to buy bigger more expensive vehicles. Aygo X looks OK for a small car but Toyota solved the financial dilema by simply charging a big car price for it !
