Regarding number 19, if I remember correctly there was a famous marketing executive who arranged a photoshoot in the 1920s, which fits the costume style, where he took photos of groups of young women smoking cigarettes as a way to show that it was an "independent, glamourous" activity for women. It was an active choice to sell cigarettes to more women by painting it as an explicitly feminist action.

Oh yeah that wouldn't surprise me at all if that was true. Tobacco companies did what they could to advertise their products until it became illegal to

My guess for the woman in the Icons PSA was actually that she is a reference to the "golden age of Hollywood", where so many movie stars were shown smoking on and off screen all the time, often with the long cigarette holders to make it look even more glamorous. (Among the many sad stories about Judy Garland and the filming of Wizard of OZ, her costumes on set had pockets sewn into the inside of the skirts for her cigarettes so she could smoke between takes.)

Tobacco companies co-opted feminism to sell cigarettes. Virginia Slim's catchphrase used to be "you've come a long way baby".

@@brycenall4410 I thought they were aiming at the macho Man. Lucky strike sponsored the "freedom torches" march and they had women oriented advertisements as early as the 1930's (hopping on the diet advertising bandwagon. "instead of reaching for a snack reach for a lucky")

Here we go, nostalgia I'd remember... here we go!
20: This was aired during American Football's Superbowl here and I remember seeing it. It's actually 100% based on a true story, someone in Ohio actually did this to save her mother from an abusive relationship. I think it's powerful.
19: This one was before a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes at the time over here too. It never spooked me, but then I was older when I first saw it. It's really neat they used the actual tobacco icons, or what would have been. You can see Camel, Marlboro, Virginia Slim/Pall Mall, and Kool/Newport all represented here in different ways based on how they're actually advertised to people.
18: I love this one, I think it was a clever way to get the point across. Truth had a lot of good ads back when it started, it was cool and subversive at the time. So sad to see what it became.
17: This one is one I only first saw recently, and I love how it gets the point across. Very pointed and still an important message because this still happens even though we have other ways to test. Also the way this ad was made, really cool to see. You don't see a lot of stop-motion ads.
16: I never grew up seeing this one, but it's a great ad, I wish it got more play. It's that important.
15: I didn't see this one often, but did see it. I have a soft spot for this one, and its other song-based ad about the tiny babies born to smoking women. Worked great!
14: Didn't see this one often either, but no wonder - it's probably been buried by all the Truthers and gun nuts out there.
13: I've always been fond of this series of ads, they're catchy but also have a twisted sort of humor to them. I love the Avenue Q type puppets aping off Sesame Street. Delightfully done.
12: Montana Meth Project always did good ads. Like, very memorably scary ones. Sure as hell scared me away from doing meth, not that I ever had any desire to. I think this one's not the scariest they did, but this one is very effective and sad.
11: The last good Truth ad. I only saw this one a few times but it sticks with you for sure. Catchy as hell. Why on earth DO they make tobacco taste sweet? To hook you. I only ever see kids buy the sweeter flavors...
10: This series is also super effective. Again, not the scariest in this series, but it is a good one. The footage is clips of a marching band performance, by the way.
9: The original version of this ad's song is way too catchy, but both of them are good. It's a really good one. I keep on humming it, and every so often the Heroin one too, under my breath. Worked well to keep it in your brain for sure.
8: Oof. This one hits hard. Did you know the reason this one has pizza in it is because apparently, Pizza Hut sponsored it? What a weird sponsorship.
7: Don't recall this one but it's a good ad and probably the most powerful in its series.
6: This one's classic. I remember seeing this a lot, it frightened me as a kid too.
5: Aaand here's the Heroin ad. Lovely work. Really gross too, disturbing stuff. The Freshest Feeling indeed.
4: This is one of the more powerful Montana Meth Project ads IMHO. I saw this one and a few others several times as a kid. They always freaked me out.
3: I feel like I saw this one before too but can't remember where. It's harrowing to say the least... definitely one of the strongest PFADFA ads.
2: I know I saw this one on a VHS before as a kid... and it disturbed me a lot. I didn't watch it again for another 20 years because it freaked me out so bad. Super powerful.
1: Vince and Larry! Classics! That's all you can say.

One of the things that freaks me out the most about the school shooting PSA is that theres so many. We have gotten to the point where we need so many in America to try and stop it. And so many shootings dont even get coverage for how many they are. Freaks me out to where high school never felt safe. Im in college now and still am on full alert and randomly thinking about it to try and figure out what my plan would be if a shooting happened.
On a lighter note, I discovered your channel not even an hour ago and you are criminally underrated, doing great!

One of my favorite PSA series here in America played in the early 2000s. I know it was on Vh1, and it may have been on similar channels as well. It was called Be the Boss of Your TV, and it featured parents talking to gangsters, mobsters, and a serial killer with a chainsaw explaining to them that their television shows are too graphically violent for their and the parents have to block these shows. It was funny watching these characters get so disappointed at that kind of news.

    Great list, great picks.
From the classics like PFDFA, Truth, and Montana Meth to the lesser known like Kansas City Youth Ambassadors. There's pretty much something for everyone here.
Who says America sucks at PSAs?
(I hadn't seen "Save Ralph" before this. Ouch.)
I clicked on this video thinking about a few specific American PSAs, I knew they weren't gonna be on here but I just had to say it...
    1. There's a PSA from the Wisconsin Department of Transport called "What have I done?" It's a short ad about a man walking from his car to the construction worker he hit on the road. Standard fare for New Zealand or Australia, not so much over here.
    2. There's a whole series of PSAs from Minnesota's Dept. of Natural Resources involving drowning and drunk boating/fishing/hunting. My favourite is "Can you find the fisherman in this picture?" (Answer: he got drunk and fell in the water.)
    3. I remember this from the Reddit thread about that iceberg I made a few months ago - there's an ad from the Jewish Chautauqua Society called "Hate Hurts You", but only the ten second version exists online. The thirty second version is lost. No one's been able to find it. And apparently it scared so many kids in the late 70s that they had to pull/revise it.

If people are dumb enough to choose to smoke despite all the evidence just let them and stop harassing them tbh. They're just workers at a company they just are trying to do their jobs. I think the drama was extremely effective in all the PSA's.
#14, the Sandy Hook one, has amazing drama but unfortunately the message is not effective. It would be like a timeless PSA if they changed the message line at the end to "Reform Our School Systems."
#13 should just take out the message entirely and not even be a PSA, it is a really effective drama but the message isn't effective (it is more effective to promote prevention of illicit drug use than focusing on the dramatic symptoms of it).
    I really liked #19, #18, #15, #14, #12, #11, #10.
#11 could hardly have been a better idea.
    #10 Is iconic.
    #9...wow.
    #8 - That is unforgettable.
#6 Is like a Hallmark and a Lifetime Show at the same time, a very classic approach.
#5 Is very memorable, though heroin use is extremely uncommon in the Midwest of the USA (actually don't know anyone that is or was a heroin addict)
so the importance of the message is always at question.
    #4 Excellent too.
#3 Interesting history for this excellent one:
x I live in Nebraska and remember when this event happened.
x I detassled with the brother of the guy in the video, the brothers' hometown is also my birthplace (actually just went there yesterday).
x They were wandering out in the cold and thought they were talking to "foreigners" that were speaking a language that they didn't know.
People think they were talking to cows out in the field and somehow thought they were foreigners.
x I was not aware this was a PSA!
#2 Excellent and unforgettable too. I really liked it when I saw it on the other video.
#1 Interesting story about this classic one:
x I believe one of the characters is the voice of Lorenzo Music, who also did the voice of Garfield.
x For the first 18 years of my life, I lived in Garfield County, which was named after James Garfield, as was Garfield the Cat.
Jim Davis's Grandfather, James Garfield Davis, was named after the president and the cat was named (and modeled) after his grandfather.
Fantastic video, I will recommend it to anyone that I think might be interested.

Id say "truth" helped quite abit. The smoking age is 21 in the usa and you dont seem to see teens in groups puffing like you did in the 80s and 90s. Also there is an ad where the "marlbro man's" son (he was played by several actors in the 1960s-1970s as a puffing cowboy) talks to you telling you his dad was one of those famous actors and that his dad died from smoking and he shows you brief footage of the guy dying and gasping from air. His son is standing on the ranch set much like his dad was seen on.

@@Zach.R i wanna say it aired around 2011-2013 i saw it a few times on tv. It was pretty interesting and an ad that kinda sadly fell under the radar and not noticed as much. And i learned that all the "marlbro" men died from smoking after some research. What blows my mind is these cigarette companies had logo hats and camping gear, even sponsered race cars. Even "the flinstones" had such sponsors.

#19 is fascinating because it hit on previous ad campaigns dealing with cigarettes: Camel, the Marlboro Man, and Newports during the 1940s-1950s (classic movie era). I love the confrontational approach to accountability on this subject.

The "Ralph" one was legitimately hard to watch (I hadn't seen it before) even though it was stop-frame and obviously fantastical, mostly because I am such an animal lover and think cosmetics testing on animals is completely unnecessary and cruel. Seeing actual animal torture (even made-up) is really hard for me.

This was really well done and I like hearing your analysis after each video. One of the most disturbing anti drug PSAs I have ever seen was one from the late 80s called " Faces". It shows a close up of this beautiful, young blonde teenage girl's face. In the background u can hear a birthday song playing and it's gets slower and more distorted as we see her face deteriorating because of drug use. Then at the very end this sheet suddenly covers her face and u realize she's in the morgue. It used to give me nightmares. Was wondering if u have ever seen it? If u haven't, check it out.

Let me rephrase as after re-reading this I came off a little tone deaf. If your addiction truly is that bad that you see no other way out other than SH, then I truly feel for you. Meth is and can be a very hard drug to break away from, I was merely saying that if you truly want to, it can be done.
