I just mine built recently, it was fun but you got to do some painting before really getting far in the beginning. I was tempted to paint the black nerf bars and the cage but from previous experience the paint dos not stay on them very well so I opted to leave them all black as they intend and not rick having everything chipping and flaking off. I should have my chassis build video out on Saturday. You are going to have fun cutting out the decals! They are very unique compared to what you are used to!
It's true...I was going through the manual and I think you're supposed to paint a couple parts right in step 1. I'm trying to source out paint now...we got screwed here in Canada with Tamiya paints. The hobby store here is still trying to come up with a solution. Maybe I can brush paint some of the bits as the brushed Tamiya paints were not banned. Sucks...I love my Tamiya paints...had to go and buy up a bunch before there was a mad rush to clear the stock. Crazy how after almost 30 yrs of using these paints they're gone. Like you, I've decided not to paint the roll cage etc. It's interesting to see that the box art shows everything camouflaged but in reality I think that would be quite tough to do. I'm not bothered though..this will be a runner so I'm sure it's going to get beaten up a bit. Look forward to your video on Saturday! What a great kit!
@@FastFreddyRC Yeah it sucks you guys up there lost the paints very specific to these kits. There are alternatives but not as common. For the hard plastics most commercial spray pains formulated for plastics work well. Just use the same brand as I have had brand interactions. I know several of them do camo colors.
Build it and run the sh..t out of it! Such a fun runner! Just stick some oil shocks on the back its a lovely balance then of control and bounce! Great story buddy.
Hey Freddy, looks like you’re be taking a trip down memory lane. Enjoy the fond memories my friend. Looking forward to seeing you build this great re-release. Best wishes to you and the family 🖐️😎😉
Selling newspapers in 84 and seeing a superchamp in a shop window had me hook, line and sinker. The fav was my first. Just got it back into my life yesterday. I remember the gun, side rails and roll cage trees were all tan. Bashing around with my friends frog were the best times
That's awesome Justin...great story. And very cool that you've picked one up again...that will be a trip down memory lane for sure. I guess they must have changed the colour molds for this kit. I might be ok with it as the gun is more realistic in black. Not sure yet whether I'll paint up the roll cage or the gearbox or just leave it as is.
@@FastFreddyRC Yeah painting the roll cage for a shelf queen is the only way it will stay on though 😂. Really glad they'd done away with those hex end axles. Man they wore quick. Look forward to the build and run vid
@@JustinLisaHaynes lol yeah you're probably right about the paint. I want this to be a runner so I think I'm going to leave everything as they molded it...which I'm fine with...might tweak a few things as I go but I'll know more once I get into the build. Hex drive shafts...man who thought of that? lol - I think I had to replace my Blackfoot ones twice? They just wore out over time and I think the last set I got were great except the drive cups had worn out quite a bit too so everything just ended up being a bit "loose". So glad Tamiya switched everything to dog bone. Should have been that way right from the start.
Nice one, Freddy. Another one on our list for the first 100 tribute collection. If you're wondering, those wheels and tires are from the Buggy Champ (Rough Rider). Enjoy the build!
Thank you! And yes...I can see you adding this one...cool! Actually...I hadn't thought about it too much but as soon as you said it it totally brought me back to the photos I've seen of the Buggy Champ! Very cool...thanks for letting me know. I actually really like the design...they seem so much more aggressive than the usual ribbed tires. I would think they offer a lot more grip?
Thanks Peter! I love the cockpit details and that you get an almost full body as opposed to just a head :) I think that enhances the overall scale look.
Oh yeah...I still remember the whole thing like it was yesterday. For a toy grade car, Tyco knew what they were doing. The Turbo Hopper was awesome and it had real rubber tires (even the spare was real rubber) and working suspension. Most of the toy RC's you buy now of that size have fake shocks and no suspension. The only thing I do remember is who was driving the Turbo Hopper not in Turbo mode? - it wasn't fast enough in regular mode so you ALWAYS had it in turbo lol
Very cool! Such a cool kit. Definitely wish I’d kept my original Blackfoot but as a kid why would you? lol Sometimes I miss the old 3 step. It was fun having to put those together with the extra servo.
No way! Awesome! That brings back memories...the revel military paint kit...wow. They had so many different options back then. Testors had similar kits and they were pretty cheap. Now, as nobody seems to make models anymore, the prices are insane. I remember buying my revel 1/24 scale kits for between $6 and $10 and you'd buy one now and again when you went out...they were everywhere. Toy stores, pharmacy's, woolco, eaton's (yes I'm dating myself) and now, if you can find them, they are selling for $28-50 a piece. No kid is going to spend that kind of money on a model and keep buying them...they've gone insane! Supply and demand? Maybe if they can't sell them like they used to they'll just jack up the price and make more on the one item? hmmmmmmm.....
Nice kit, liked your down to memory lane history, Freddy ✌ I will enjoy the step by step vid as mine is a factory finished one (was cheap on a famous german shop) 🤝
Thanks Gabriel! Takes me right back to the start. So you bought one of the XB versions? I've never bought one of those before. I had been searching for one of the 2011 kits and the only thing I could find was the XB kit that Tamico had or people were selling their NIB 2011 kits for crazy prices. I just couldn't do it as I really wanted to build it. So glad I held out...was quite surprised when the rerelease was announced.
Great kit and really cool to hear that’s kind of your gateway into the hobby even though it wasn’t your first rc. Can’t wait to follow the build series! It’s fun you mention the tread pattern that was one of the first things I noticed about this kit when I was looking at it on Amain
Hi John! Thanks...sorry for the delay...seemed to have missed this one. I've started the build but the painting is taking a LOT more time than other kits that's for sure. I decided in the end to do the full fatigue look so that is quite time consuming. Hoping to have the first few steps out soon while I continue to work on the driver figure.
@ no problem at all Freddy! My son wanted to skip ahead to assembling the wheels and tires so that’s all we have completed as of right now. I’m expecting this project to take us most of the winter because of finding time to build it with my son! Hoping to have it ready to go for the spring!
It is awesome. Dave who comes out with us has just bought one. I have the Wild One and Andy has the Blockheads and we cant wait to get all three out on the local Dunes! Look forward to your build
I have to add some bearing for this, I will be watching this build series it also on my list. I just got a Chrome Midnight Pumkin for 140USD as here in Malaysia. It's a lot cheaper than American, but it's still more expensive than Japan, but that makes sense.
Yeah bearings are definitely a must. The price for the chrome midnight pumpkin is awesome...nice find! I'll be starting this build fairly quickly just waiting on some paint. In Canada they have banned all Tamiya spray cans but some stores still have colours in stock so I might still be able to get the right colours for this.
@FastFreddyRC that's not good that they banned the Tamiya paint there. I seen the Poor Boys RC video. Here in Malaysia, it's fairly cheap, and home in Australia is about the same price. Japan is obviously suoer cheap, but I see the prices in America, Canada and England they are exoensive either from shipping or tax.
@@kanenstuff Yep...in North America greed wins. Everything is overpriced. I'd like to say that Tamiya might change their paint formula so that we can have their paints back but as Tamiya paints have been banned in other countries for years I'm not too hopeful.
