As a fan of Tool for 26 years I'm very protective of "my" band. Yet I will watch anybody and everyone listen and react to Tool. A lot of reactors have "cashed" in on us Tool fans being that way. Most listen to Tool, but dont hear them. You get it. And I appreciate it. It allows me to hear songs I've listened to hundreds, if not thousands of times, almost for the first time.

You should check out the "Maynard's Mom Trilogy" which in it's most basic terms, shows how MJK handles his mom suffering a stroke and being confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life, up until her death. The order of songs are "Jimmy" by Tool followed by "Judith" by A Perfect Circle(another of Maynard's bands), and ends with "Wings for Marie Pt.1 & 10,000 Days (Wings, Pt.2)" by Tool. It will be great for you to cover his attitude on things in his writing over the course of a 10 year period from 95-2005.
There is one last song in the Maynard’s mom saga that seems to be overlooked in general. I think most don’t realize it is part of it. The Puscifer song Horizons is about Maynard spreading her ashes and saying his final goodbye. If you haven’t heard it, you definitely gotta. If you have heard it, but didn’t realize it was part of it, pay close attention to the lyrics.
Hey mate, I've been watching since you started doing tool songs. Just wanted to drop a note of appreciation for your content. Excellent musical and lyrical analysis. Keep it up!
Another great reaction as always! When you listen to parabol/parabola try to find a version that lets you hear the transition without pause. The transition between parabol and parabola will blow your socks off.
Hell yeah. I HATE that my digital devices pause for that moment between tracks. After so many listens on CD it really jarred the first time I had it happen.. Almost as much as the shock and joy when it didn't when I first heard it on CD.
Love how Tool cracks open your mind like a crowbar! "Dad, are we all just one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively?" "Shut up kid! Go listen to Limp Bizkit!" 😆
Hey Jersh, gotta tell you these were the most enjoyable 33 minutes I've had in awhile . I'm 50 years old, Tool fan from the 90's so with this time off from this pandemic I've been watching Tool reactions. You have a great talent of sharing your thoughts. You seem very true and your personality really shines with your feelings to the music and lyrics. Will be checking out your work and will be subscribing for sure. Stay safe everyone and continue to stay real
Another class reaction! Thanks man, following you on this journey has been a lot of fun, I really hope you enjoy it and keep doing Tool songs - I hope you do their whole discography (except for segues of course). Not only was it a great reaction and interpretation for the usual reasons, one thing I really enjoyed was how much you noticed and paid respect to the musical breakdown at the end of the song. IMO Right in Two has one of the best, most epic and hard hitting breakdowns of any song, and sometimes you'll see someone reacting to it where they're too busy interpreting lyrics etc that the moment washes over them and it sort of fizzes and I find myself almost yelling at the screen saying "Can't you see how awesome that just was?!" lol But you paid it the respect it deserves, it was fun to watch! Keep spiralling out! If you're still taking recommendations, don't forget about the Salival LP released between AEnima and Lateralus. Not only does it have an alternate version to their song Pushit, which everyone here will recommend (because it's awesome), it also has an incredible cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter, which many, including myself, agree that it just blows the original out of the water, while respecting it and doing it justice at the same time. Cheers.
In this episode of Jersh Reacts to Tool, lets have a staring contest at 23:56 while we're in a trance from hypnotic sounding tribal drums. Love it! Really though, I am loving all of these reactions and hearing your interpretation of the music, lyrically and musically. Tool is a band who puts more thought into what they create than any other that I've known and it really shows that you pick up on that in how you experience their songs! Thanks for giving us your take on things! I've loved watching so far!
lol i checked that time code and you aren't kidding hahahaha, i definitely try to communicate more as the reactions go on, thx for checking them out! :)
My vote for next reaction is Pushit. There are two versions, one on Aenima and a live one from Salival. They are very different and you should do both, but do the Aenima one first, since it came out first and is kind of the “canonical” version of the song.
"Fight till they die over sun, over sky, They fight till they die over sea, over air, They fight till they die over blood, over love, They fight till they die over words, polarizing." These are the official lyrics by Maynard, they are found on "the tool page", a fan run website around since the band started in the early 90's. He literally e-mailed the lyrics to the person who ran the site, that's why I trust in those lyrics more than anywhere else. Also, Intension and Right in Two both touch on the innate duality with man, at least I've noticed. In Intension we use the stone and fire in two different ways, to help, or to hurt. Right in Two is the same, we always divide things right in two. Us vs them, good vs bad, light vs dark. We can't leave things as a whole, as one.
I watch a few of your Tool reactions. I've enjoyed them. Once I saw the dog, I was sold. I can't sit without my chihuahua on my lap. Welcome to the family
When this album first came out I went and bought it. Played it on repeat all night. I feel asleep and woke back up in the morning. Went to to bathroom and this guitar riff was in my head from intension, and I was trying to figure out what band it was, even though I was just listening to tool. Being that it’s the intro song to right in two I often skipped it. So long story short that night I did the same thing put it on repeat and I finally figured out where I heard that guitar part. Simple but catchy!
Donald Rodriguez nope, cut and divide it all right in two. Adam Jones had pics on his instagram of one of the areas they were playing at, there were giant stickers on the floor and walls through some of the backstage halls that had lines from their songs on them. One of them was “Cut and divide it all right in two”
14:53 "That's the imagery it gave me." Jesus man....quite often you understand these songs the _first time_ you listen to them...more than I have in damn near 20 years of loving this band. Believe me...I have my own interpretations, many of which I haven't heard touched on. But....you seem to _really_ get it. It's just cool to watch. And it's insightful to hear a very intelligent person expound on something I know and love...but who is utterly new to it all. It's kinda fascinating to watch that. I think that's why reaction videos are my guilty pleasure. I hate reality tv...so this is my thing lol.
Regarding the lyrics, "conscious of your fleeting time here" some believe our time on earth is important in that we are tried based on our works. This applies to other religions outside of Christianity as well. So IMHO, there is no lyrical contradiction, at least in those particular lyrics, if one so chooses to interpret them in that respect.
The mere fact, on first listen, that you picked up on "caveman imagery" in Intension....before even hearing Right in Two....is why I'm loving this channel. Btw....your google of the word Intention is correct. But that's not the spelling of the song....it's kinda misspelled with an S where the last T should be. Which implies.............tension. Which leads into...the next song. It's funny....I'm a massive Tool fan...my first "real" concert was Tool in 2001; I was 18. But I'm noticing things through your channel I've *never* noticed before.
Jersh actually got it right. I googled Intension instead of Intention and the definition is as Jersh had said "in·ten·sion - (archaic) resolution or determination."
Please check out Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Waken 2013. I think youll really like them. They are a symphonic metal band and are very diverse in what they do. And as far as tool goes Third Eye is a must! Be prepared haha.
I like a lot your reaction videos, you put effort in your interpretations and they make a lot of sense. Also my recommendation is a band called Modest Mouse, there are very few reactions to this band, you can start with the song "ocean breathes salty" or "spitting venom" for example, but all their stuff is really good, really good lyrics too, I especially love the album "the lonesome crowded west".
unfortunately i've heard ocean breathes salty as well as float on and the world at large, but that's it so there's a lot of modest mouse i could react to in the future, thanks for the suggestion and for checking out the channel :)
@@SuperJersh Oh, and another recommendation is the band build to spill, very tasteful guitar work, not super technical shredding but great tone and great sounding solos, i recommend "carry the zero" or "broken chairs" to start. edit: on carry the zero the video with more views doesn't have very good sound quality, if you gonna listen to it take this one: th-cam.com/video/owNtZIn7L4A/w-d-xo.html

Great insight during Intension. You were right on. And you're not even close to being done with TOOL. As previously stated, there are no bad TOOL songs. You've barely scratched the surface.
Stealth Banana split the sky like you would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this, and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping "Holy fuckun' shit!!"
Pushit - for a long time my favourite with very interesting and challenging lyrics. Then you can compare with their live version off Salival album (which is a mind blowing reworking) 👍
You talking about time at around the 25 minute mark made me think, since you like tool you’d probably love Pink Floyd. And you’ve probably already heard a lot of songs by them but you should listen to “Time” off of their Dark Side of the Moon album. The lyrics are amazing and it’s one of my favourite songs of all time
Great intelligent lyrical analysis....there is so much Maynard to react to...I think the Maynards mother Trilogoy is a good idea...Jimmy, Judith and then wings for marie....possibly do them all together?? Or at least in the same day. Much love!
Seeing as you are deaf in one ear do you at least make windows force all audio to one side when you are using an earbud? Sorry if you addressed this before.
I reckon you're ready now. Ready for Third Eye and Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. Be prepared. They are... Weird, but fucking amazing. They both requires a couple of listens to appreciate, however, once you get it, you fucking get it. You'll never be able to listen to music the same way again. Cheers!
Maynard grew up in a Christian family but is no a fan of organized religion. His beliefs run more towards the philosophy of Sacred Geometry. The drummer , Danny Carrey is a big influence in driving the band in that direction. If you know anything about Sacred Geomotry, it's based on harmony, whether it be in nature or within oneself, and also applies this to space and vibrations. The song Lateralus was composed using the Fibonacci sequence, not only in the lyrics but in the musical composition. Once you listen to enough of their songs you will notice a lot of their songs incorporate this into their music. They are basically giving the listener the tools for self growth and enlightenment, to use as a guide. How each individual uses and interprets the tools are up to each of us. Enjoying your insights and look forward to the next.❤🤘
SuperJersh You’ll pick up a lot of new followers reacting to him. He has his hand in a ton of musical projects and is a massive figure in the metal community. Check out Strapping Young Lad from his earlier days.
If we're gonna stick with the 10,000 Days album, Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned should definitely be in the near future. I think you would enjoy those. Keep in mind though, Lost Keys is meaningless without Rosetta Stoned, and listening to Rosetta stoned without Lost Keys, you only get half the story. \m/
Brilliant how you picked up to that dialectic of monkeys (evolution) and religion (creation). This little detail is missed by many I'd guess. It really is not to be distinguished from on another, religion/spirituality is a part of evolution if you so will. Being conscious about ones existence creates the question of purpose and the human ego wants to see itself as something important (even more great in this context that he calls us talking monkeys, dehumanize us in order to bring us closer to an animal again). There is so much to talk about but I will leave it for now :) Really good reaction, sometimes I am surprised how much you pick up in your first listen (details), Tool has also very nuanced drumming, it's imo the heart of the band, it's so good that guitar and bass can fully concentrate just building up these imageries that you are getting. As you said it, with Tool you can actually picture all kinds of stuff, they leave room for that. You could also try some oldschool raw Tool, pretty sure their sound will surprise you a lot 👍
The lyric at the end is "benched along with patience and reason", not "been so long with patience and reason". Why does no one ever get this lyric right? Nice reaction, though. Keep 'em coming! 👍
thanks! yeah it's tough because as far as i know they don't release official lyrics and when i'm searching online i don't really read what they are ahead of time because i'm trying to be as completely blind as possible so i only find out after the fact that there are errors sometimes, i appreciate the correct info! :)
Maynard has a somewhat contentious relationship with the idea of religion. On the other hand, he seems quite spiritual. I’d say he uses the this religious as a stand in for spirituality, as it makes a much better story to tell. I think the lyric: “repugnant is a creature....conscious of his fleeting time here” is referring to how we are capable of the divine, and have the ability to lift ourselves up or an eye to heaven, all the while knowing our time here is fleeting and yet we still squander it that innate divine ability we all have. Which makes us repugnant!
@@SuperJersh Maynard is the best lyricist I've ever listened to. No one writes songs as meaningful as him. No matter when they were written they stand the test of time
I like to think of that build up instrumental section to be humanities time on earth. From tribal society to self imposed annihilation. Also every time I hear the "silly monkeys" line I always think of the chewbacca defence from South Park... Am I the only one?
These two songs are about the same story just from different viewpoints. The first is the human condition and our war-driven nature from the perspective of humans, and the second is from the perspective of some outside observer looking in (angels in this case). Regarding Maynard, he has a deep hatred of organized religion, which you will come to learn if you listen to a few of his songs from Tool and his other bands. He has reasons for all the religious imagery in this album "10,000 Days", but I won't say why. You can figure it out when you get to it. Maynard does seem to have some spirituality to him and is not a materialist, but I don't know that he's ever come out and explicitly stated what belief system he holds.
Nice! For another TOOL recommendation, I suggest you first react to Judith by A Perfect Circle. While this isn’t TOOL, lead vocals and lyrics are done by TOOL’s vocalist, Maynard James Keenan. Then, react to Wings for Marie Pt. 1 and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) from this album. That may be too much for one reaction vid and if so, do Judith separately first , the other two are a must together. All three tracks is MJK’s reaction to the same series of events/situation, with Judith being from several years earlier. I dare not say more, but Judith gives such great context to TOOL discography here.
i appreciate a lot about this comment. number one you cared about whether or not you were spoiling anything (sadly some info has been shared already regarding some of those songs lol), you also let me know how the band's are related in case i didn't know. i can't promise it will be that specific order but i plan on getting to all of those songs and may do a whole perfect circle series soon, thanks :)
jimmy is already recorded and the only thing i have read in the comments about that one is that it's related to maynard's mom songs wings for marie and 10000 days, so unfortunately i didn't listen to the intermission, i hope you can forgive me 😋😁
@@SuperJersh Ha! That alone should be proof that these reactions ARE genuine. As if you or anyone could navigate a band like TOOL perfectly. Your doing awesome. On your own time then, listen to the transition before jimmy. It's a cool one. Most of us are really enjoying the ride!
honestly the thought i have most is 'what the hell is happening right now?' because there's so much to take in. these are long songs with a lot of thoughtful lyrics and incredible musicianship on every instrument, then there's the melody and the singing.... lmao

The lyrics are amazing and it’s one of my favourite songs of all time
i've only heard a few of their mainstream songs never bought an album or watched a music video (if they have them lol)
@@SuperJersh listening to the entire album Dark Side of the Moon is a must.
Great intelligent lyrical analysis....there is so much Maynard to react to...I think the Maynards mother Trilogoy is a good idea...Jimmy, Judith and then wings for marie....possibly do them all together?? Or at least in the same day. Much love!
Katatonia - Spoil's Song
Seeing as you are deaf in one ear do you at least make windows force all audio to one side when you are using an earbud? Sorry if you addressed this before.
no worries, yep i get both channels :)
TOOL - FEAR INOCULUM!!
definitely plan on it trying to cover most of the old stuff first
The skirmish is the advancement of mankind and all the war that came from it

"That's unexpected...."
I'm hitting like before watching, dont let me down. Nah I'm not worried. 👁👀
i like your attitude :)
@@SuperJersh I really like how you don't do theory research before reacting.
Cheers!
Klone - Immersion
Hit the " like " button before watching the video. Thanks for another great start of the day. 🤘
thanks for watching and for the like, i appreciate it! :)
Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift and eye to Heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
SuperJersh are you glad that you discovered TOOL?
richard W YEP. 😊
Next 'combined' Tool songs - Parabol/Parabola.
Or for something a little different, Devin Townsend Project - Grace (live at the Retinal Circus).
definitely interested in devin townsend he's been recommended a lot and i've only heard one song of his
SuperJersh You’ll pick up a lot of new followers reacting to him.
There is so much to talk about but I will leave it for now :)
Really good reaction, sometimes I am surprised how much you pick up in your first listen (details), Tool has also very nuanced drumming, it's imo the heart of the band, it's so good that guitar and bass can fully concentrate just building up these imageries that you are getting. As you said it, with Tool you can actually picture all kinds of stuff, they leave room for that.
You could also try some oldschool raw Tool, pretty sure their sound will surprise you a lot 👍
I’m so happy I just shit on the floor!
don't slip
SuperJersh 💩🤪
Any tool song it's worth to react xD, so react to all full catalog before fear incacolum haha, good reaction!
definitely loving the music, lyrics, the thoughts it's giving me and the community discussion
@@SuperJersh Maynard is the best lyricist I've ever listened to. No one writes songs as meaningful as him. No matter when they were written they stand the test of time

If you listen to tool long enough your hearing will come back to your right ear.
That moment at about twenty-seven: 40 where he regresses to a child
SuperJersh the song Jimmy by TOOL is the first part of that song trilogy
If and when you react to jimmy, listen to the short intermission right before jimmy. You'll understand.
jimmy is already recorded and the only thing i have read in the comments about that one is that it's related to maynard's mom songs wings for marie and 10000 days, so unfortunately i didn't listen to the intermission, i hope you can forgive me 😋😁
@@SuperJersh Ha! That alone should be proof that these reactions ARE genuine. As if you or anyone could navigate a band like TOOL perfectly. Your doing awesome. On your own time then, listen to the transition before jimmy. It's a cool one. Most of us are really enjoying the ride!
Pushit salival version
Tool - Maynard's D
Rosetta Stoned
You’d be a good professor.
Haha I just speak from gut reaction and life experience, wouldn’t mind making listening to music a full time thing tho 😜😊
Wings for Marie 1&2, Rosetta Stoned, Aenima, Hooker with a Penis. Still a few to go. But you do have to listen to Wings 1&2 back to back.
its fascinating how you cut the one piece of music at the solo right in two ;) its just human nature
So Jersh, how many times now has the thought “where has this been all my life?” Gone through your head since starting this trip? 😉
honestly the thought i have most is 'what the hell is happening right now?' because there's so much to take in. these are long songs with a lot of thoughtful lyrics and incredible musicianship on every instrument, then there's the melody and the singing.... lmao
