  • Koh Kret เกาะเกร็ด is a small island in the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand. It is around 3 km long and 3 km wide with an area of over 4.2 square kilometers. It has seven main villages, the largest and most populous being Ban Mon. The island is best known for Thai-Mon people who make pottery for a living. The island is only accessed by ferries.
Koh Kret was originally a meander located on the Chao Praya river. Due to Chao Praya river's curvy path, ships would take longer to reach Ayutthaya, Siam's capital at the time. During the reign of King Thaisa, the king wanted to reduce shipping time and improve the kingdom's economy. He planned a canal which would bypass the meander and act as a shortcut for maritime transport. The canal was dug in 1722, requiring around 10,000 men and taking over a month to complete. After the canal was dug, shipping to Ayutthaya became faster and the canal was called "Klong Lat Kret" by locals. As time passed, the canal became gradually wider due to erosion and became part of the river itself, causing Koh Kret to become an island.
Today Koh Kret is promoted as a cultural tourism destination in Nonthaburi, a suburb of Bangkok. Visitors can experience the way of life of locals and learn about pottery making. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around the island. The food is a mix of thai food and Mon and is the biggest draw for Thais and visitors. Mon food such as khao chae, fried flower and thot man no kala, a variation of Thai fish cake. It is a local food that is not found in other parts of Thailand.
I show you what the island is like now and what to expect if you visit the island. It really is a great side trip for anyone that comes to the city. It’s family friendly and great for all ages.

Koh Kret is one of the best places to go in Bangkok. There is a small riverside market on the other side of the river that most tourists have no idea about. Here is a video of it if you want to see more.

I agree. So many things to see without the crowds of places like Wat Arun and Wat Pho. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video.

Today I was there and was quiet. Nothing much to do just hang out and pass time..

The main thing is to try the food there. A lot of mom influenced food. I enjoy walking around the island and seeing the temples and other stuff on the island and have lunch on the river. It was probably upper 30’s so the Thais might have stayed home out of the heat.

Glad you enjoyed it. Koh Kret is worth a trip to see. I’ve probably been there at least 50 times and it’s still fun to visit. Next time your here it will be easier to get to with the pink BTS line getting ready to open. I think next time we go I will try my hand at making some pottery. My wife was pretty interested in doing that.

What is the pink BTS station near Pak Kret? Please give more information on travelling to Koh Kret

The closest pink station to Koh Kret is called Yeak Pak Kret. It’s right by the Major Hollywood Shopping center. From there it’s about 1.5 km to the Rama IV bridge. Walk along the river to the south a few hundred meters and jump on the ferry from the Wat Sanam Nuea Pier. There are buses, motorcycle taxis or taxis that can get you to the bridge so pretty easy. I hope that helps.
