Prasat Suor Prat ប្រាសាទសួព្រ័ត - 12 Identical Towers In Central Angkor Thom - Cambodia 2024
Prasat Suor Prat ប្រាសាទសួព្រ័ត is actually a group of 12 separate towers aligned north-south (2 of the central ones are slightly set back to the east) on the east side of the central plaza area of Angkor Thom across from the Terrace of the Elephants. (There are 6 on each side of the route leading from the Terrace to the Victory Gate - Angkor Thom Khloung Thvear Chey).
These laterite and sandstone towers are some of Angkor's most baffling monuments in terms of purpose and date of construction.
Some historians have suggested a Jayavarman VII construction, although the reliefs, (most badly eroded) seem to point to an early 11th-century, Khleang style.
Numerous theories as to their original purpose have been put forward including; viewing towers for visiting dignitaries, acrobatic tightrope displays, or prisons for settling disputes (felm the eye witness of Zhou Daguan).
All sound somewhat far fetched. The construction of twelve towers is said to correspond with the number of provinces at the time, so a tower for each provincial governor, while the colloquial Khmer name reflects the tight-rope walking idea. As Zhou Dagan is the only eye-witness, however, his report deserves some credibility.
Whatever their purpose, with a background of mature trees and grassy foreground the towers are an attractive sight. All towers are similar in design, set on small square platforms with entrances and small porches opening west onto the plaza and windows on the other 3 sides.
They are 3-tiered although the lack of any windows on the upper levels wouldn't make for very good viewing towers. Sandstone pediments feature heraldic designs although otherwise, decoration is minimal.
There are also 2 sandstone temples behind each group of 6 towers that are worth seeing while you explore this site. It’s also in the central part of the former capital with the former royal palace and important temples nearby. A really great place to visit.

What I wonder about is why build it in this style. If it’s a Buddhist temple why would there be the Hindu styling. The towers represent Mt Meru, the moat is the sea of milk and everything else that is incorporated in it. A Buddhist temple doesn’t need these elements in its design.

According to ancient inscription aka ka.26, “Khmer” is recorded as servant under reign of Kambuj empire. In the same way at warrior marching wall in Angkor Thom, Khmer part is slave alike. Instead, Siam and Lavo parts are cousin alike. Khmer shouldn’t be called as empire since Kambuj and Khmer aren’t the same class. Same language family doesn’t mean they are the same. Vietnam doesn’t look like Khmer. Zhoudaguan’s record says that ruler class in Angkor has pearl skin but labor class has black skin. If you know Trasak Paem chronicle, you will understand. Angkor is close family to Lavo. Lavo became Siam in Ayutthaya era. King Narai of Ayutthaya told Louis XIV that his lineage comes from Yasodharapura which is land that built Angkor. This is why Thai people are fighting that the root of Angkor isn’t Khmer since Khmer is recorded as inferior class at the beginning of ancient time. Instead, the creator of Angkor can lead to royal house of Siam much more.

@@endlessjourneytravels it can comprehend sun exposure can be the cause. However, Mon has same family language. For example, nose in Mon is jamu and in Khmer is jamuk. But Mon has obviously much lighter skin relative to Khmer. You can distinguish right of the bat they aren’t the same group. And speaking language can be changed within one generation. Just like Chinese in Thailand can’t speak Chinese anymore within one generation. Angkor language and current Khmer language aren’t that same. Just like Mon and Khmer. Remnant of Angkor language still appears in Royal language of Thailand until now. That is why Khmer claims Kings of Thailand are Khmer which is unacceptable for Thai people. By the way, don’t consider French bias much either. France was trying so hard to be rightful to colonize Siam.

Yes. I talk about that in the video. There are many design elements that come from Angkor Wat but it’s not a direct copy. I hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.

Yes they plan on it taking generations. I talked to one of the workers that is in charge of building it and that is what he told me. It’s nice that people still dream to build things like this. The modern world has too much concrete, steel and glass. This will be here in 500 years while all of the modern buildings will be gone.

Thank you very much. I really enjoyed visiting here and was happy to share. It’s just a simple bridge to most but it really is amazing to me. The fact that it’s still standing and I could ride my motorcycle across it is a testament to the skill of the builders from the 12th century.

I really liked that part of the temple. The elevated walkway and the reclining Buddha to me were the highlights of this temple. I wonder what was lost when the french completely disassembled the temple and then fled during the civil war. All of the plans were lost so what we see is different than what it would’ve looked like in the 1960’s. I think most of it is correct but all of the little details are not there anymore. Even with that still amazing.

Yes it was just the small temple with the 5 towers. The other buildings and walls are either gone or just down to the brick base. Even with that the carvings of Vishnu in the bricks was really amazing. I always went past it because Pre Rup and East Mebon are larger with more to see but I was very happy to finally stop and enjoy this piece of history.

It's not a copy since it's made with concrete and modern technology, but I'm glad Angkor and khmer civilization still inspire Thai people to this day. I'm confident it will look nice in the end.

    • @endlessjourneytravels
      @endlessjourneytravels 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

The use of concrete is very minimal. Most of it is the roof over the galleries. They also use rebar to hold it together. The rest is sandstone blocks. Many of the design elements from Angkor is still used but it is different in many ways like the garden area with several buildings and Buddha images. As far as using modern technology that wouldn’t affect it being copied. If you use an elephant to drag a sandstone block or use a modern crane to move it that doesn’t matter. I agree with you that it’s nice that Khmer architecture can inspire. I really enjoyed visiting here. I’ve been to Angkor Wat many times an it’s one of my favorite places on earth to visit. This temple will be a place I will stop at again when I visit Buriram. I hope the size of it comes through the video. I flew the drone around because I wanted people to see how giant this place really is. Thanks for spending a little bit of your time on my channel, I appreciate it.

I said in the video that the image that inspired me for this video was seeing an old T54/55 tank crossing this bridge during the civil war. I’ve been searching for that picture again but I can’t find it. There was something about seeing a steel tank crossing this ancient stone bridge that fascinated me. It’s not just the soldiers but how life changing a simple structure like this is. When the river is high you can cross it with your family to go get food if needed. Now imagine the royal road that went from Siem Reap to Phimai. Millions of feet were able to travel this route over the centuries.

How did Thailand build Angkor Wat? It took 30 years to build and was completed in 1150. What year did Sukhothai declare its independence? That was 1238 when they declared their independence from the Khmer Rouge Ayutthaya was founded in 1350. Explain this to me please. Angkor Wat took 30 years to build, 300,000 people and 6,000 elephants. It was not built by a few slaves from modern day Thailand but was a full state sponsored operation. As far as Thailand colonizing Cambodia for 432 years can you please give more details on this. After the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 King Taksin reunified Siam (modern day Thailand). The area of Siem Reap was taken. This was the largest extent of the kingdom. This area was controlled until King Rama IV traded it to the French colony of Cambodia for Trat and the area around it so native Thais could be unified with the country. This was roughly 4 generations. How do you get 432 years? I would like more information on this from you please.

I’ve been wanting to visit here for years. Was amazing to finally be able to see it. There are 11 smaller bridges remaining between here and Siem Reap. There used to be 22 but they destroyed 11 of them when they built route 6. An unknown part of history but fascinating to me. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video.

So you are saying that Thailand built Angkor wat? King Rama IV traded this area of Cambodia for the area of Thailand around Trat. There was no theft involved. It was a treaty between 2 nations. As far as Angkor Wat being Thai it was completed in 1150. Sukhothai declared its independence from the Khmer in 1238 and Ayutthaya was founded in 1350. Both of these dates are after the construction that took 30 years to complete. It was also constructed by as many as 300,000 people with 6,000 elephants. It was not constructed by slaves as some believe. So please don’t tell me that I don’t know what I’m saying. You write in Thai speak to me like I’m an idiot. Why would you do this? I also wonder why you talk about this because it has nothing to do with the video. I show the temple. That is what the video is about. I let people decide for themselves if it is a copy of Angkor Wat.
