Hello, nice dudes! We're back with another first time watching reaction, this time to Top Gun (1986), directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer! Altaf absolutely loves this movie, and could not have been more excited to finally show it to Chris.

the below the hard deck thing is hilarious "I was only below it for a few seconds" a hard deck in flight operations simulates the ground, so what maverick really said was "I only smashed into the ground for a few seconds"

    • @42Mrgreenman

ROFL, by "Hard Deck" they mean, "If you are trying that hard just to win, I'm going to deck you the next time I see you."
War is a team sport, and some of the players don't get to come back next season, so you better value them like you would your own limbs, for without them, you are nothing...Maverick could have been playfully ragging on Jester for crashing into the ground, but no, he had to also crash into the ground to prove a point that he was somehow better than Jester in getting a lock on him...Being a daring soldier who inspires others is one thing, but disregarding the rules for your own vanity does not help military cohesion in any way...

    1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this.
    2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash.
    3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash.
These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎
    4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a great movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
    5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
    6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
    7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
    8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
    9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
    10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
    11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
    12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder".
It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. You will be the first.
    13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing. It even has a plot.

I love this movie. Probably seen it a hundred times. I was one of those 80s kids who almost went into the Navy because of it. I think my favorite call back to this film from the new Top Gun is Penny Benjamin, the admiral’s daughter who Maverick did the flyby for, just barely referred to by Goose, then later by his wife during the diner scene.

P.S. I loved Top Gun: Maverick, too. Seen it a dozen times already. The first time, I was laughing/crying simultaneously, uncontrollably, on more than one occasion. It’s so good. It would be easy to argue it’s the superior film of the two, but it wouldn’t be anything without the first film and 36 years of nostalgia and permeation of our culture. I’ll never forget touring Miramar back in 1990 and seeing the officer’s club where the infamous “you’ve lost that lovin feeling” scene happened.

    couple of cool facts
The purpose of top gun was to train instructors, it was to teach them the dogfighting skills they mention but it was so that these elite pilots and WSO could return to their units in the fleet to pass along the information they had learned and make the whole squadron better.
The film was filmed at top gun in miramar, the flying you see in the film was performed by top gun pilots
in their intro briefing they mention that they use F5's and A4's at topgun to simulate enemy aircraft, this was true at the time of filming, however all the aircraft shown flown by the topgun instructors were A4's and thats because the F5's were the "mig 28's" in the film.
also the reason that they dont make more "jet pilot movies" is because if done accurately it would be boring. Most jet engagements are radar only beyond visual range. the distances shown in this movie would be suicidally close. even the missiles they actually use in the film (aim9 Sidewinder heat seeking missiles) have a 22 mile range and these are considered "short range" missiles.

    • @davidbennett1357
      @davidbennett1357 ปีที่แล้ว

I actually recall reading about a conversation in one of those tech magazines a while ago where someone was talking about dogfighting with a test pilot for the F-35 (because some people had said the F-35 sucks at close in aerial maneuvering) and the pilot essentially said that if an F-35 pilot lets an enemy get THAT close, they have actually fucked up. The idea, as you say, is to kill the enemy aircraft long before they get close enough to see visually.

    • @AMortalDefiant
      @AMortalDefiant ปีที่แล้ว

@@davidbennett1357 Most of what pilots do can be handled automatically. The pilots are the almost the redundancy for the computer systems at this point. The jets can take off, and land automatically using the ACLS (Automatic Carrier Landing System), which pulls the INS (Inertia Navigation Systems), GPS, altimeter, etc., readings, and triangulates where the plane is in relation the carrier, even adjusting for the pitch, and yaw of the carrier on the waves (so the wings don't clip the deck on landing if the jet is not properly oriented). The ACLS came out in 1963. We learned about it in Navy AT-O school (Aviation Electronics Technician). Our instructors said we technically don't need to pilots to even take off, or land, but they do so to maintain their skills.
Likewise, the jets all have had IFF (Identification of Friend or Foe), which reads signals emitted by all the jets. They can tell if someone is an enemy from miles away. And... since the US controls the GPS satellites, we can actively block signal to enemy jets to make our jets harder for them to see (at least in theory; I'm not sure that we've ever had to resort to that).
None of this is mean to diminish all the training, and hard work the pilots put in, of course.

Tony Scott was a masterful director like his brother, but with this inherent ability to inject the viewer into the scenes making you feel like you were the one strapped to the outside of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun as far as I'm concerned, is one of the top 5 movies of the 1980s, with the others being Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. What gets me now after having gone back and watched it is just how revered it is by the creators of Maverick with the number of small character traits they zone in on, like the hug, down to the way Maverick even checks the time on his watch.

Some of our pilots' call signs: Gaysian, Cumster, Bukkake (he had a Hungarian name that kind of sounded like the word bukkake), Bundy (he looked a bit like Ted Bundy), Chimmy, and our Commanding Officer's call sign was "S.H.O.E." I went in as an Aviation Electricians Mate though I did get a specialization in H-60's because a guy in my class wanted to be stationed in CA to be near his family so we ended up swapping first assignments which had me stationed and going into an extra training in roughly the same location.

This movie sparked a childhood love of planes, and though it never scaled up to being a real pilot (only a half hour of actual stick time in a prop plane), let alone a Navy pilot, I am quite good at flying in Digital Combat Simulator and love flying the F-14.
BTW, at the beginning when Cougar is on approach and the jet is swinging back and forth left and right, THAT is a very real condition the aircraft can get into and it is freaky as hell to experience (simulated) and to fix without going around on the approach. I can't imagine being half-panicked and trying to do an approach, at dusk, on a carrier. Yuk.

The final countdown what happens when a top of the line navel vessel is time warped to December 7, 1941.

I'm not a dude and I'm a pacifist so I never thrilled to this movie like so many did.
I think Tom Cruise is up there with the best actors who have ever lived, too bad it seems he is such a total AH as a human being. I think he should have won an Oscar for his performance in Rain Man (1988). If you haven't seen that movie it's a must. Dustin Hoffman did win an Oscar for his part in it.
A friend of mine lives just up the street from that little house by the beach that they used as where the Kelly McGillis character resides.

Just in case you missed it: Merlin (the guy who replaces Goose at the end and was flying with the guy who quit during the opening) is Tim Robbins. He's the actor who played Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.

Flying through jet wash can disrupt the flow of oxygenated air into the engine intake and cause a stall. The F-14 is such a big plane with their engines so far apart that it really freaks out when it suddenly has thrust coming from only one side

Tom Cruise is a runt. In order to hide the height difference he Stands on Fruit crates, Leans on every surface or they use close up shots. Anything that will get him at eye level with his fellow cast. In reality, he's the perfect height to be a fighter pilot. The box was not built to seat giants.

It'd be funny to see your reaction to Iron Eagle (the first one) that came out at the same time as Top Gun. Cessna racing a dirt bike through the mountains, F-16s fighting the standard 80s middle-eastern bady guys, cool old retired air force guy helping out. Pretty fun and a little campy, but then some of the best F-16 footage ever. Real footage, they paid the Israili Air force to use their jets and pilots (the US would not allow it). Anyway.. neat movie.. just not as "mature" as Top.Gun. oh.. and it has Loius Gossip Junior in it so... 😎

This movie was s staple growing up, I'd rent it out a lot as a kid, and then recorded it on VHS to watch whenever I wanted. It was one of the first movies we got on DVD, and just like every other kid who watched it, made me want to be a fighter pilot. Couldn't do it in the real world, but I love flying the F-14 in every flight simulator I have...

@@NiceDudeMovieNight the base theaters weren’t always great, but I don’t recall too much about this one - I’m fairly certain this is the first film I ever saw in a theater - about 7-8 years old.
Some of my friends dads were fighter pilots - these characters in the film were like the real people I saw every day working alongside my Dad.

Something I had thought of is that Goose should not have hit the canopy under those circumstances. My thought is that the aircraft was in a flat spin. When ejected, the canopy would not stay perfectly with the plane. So, even with Goose being ejected early or however that happened, he should have been shot out next to the canopy, not under it.
Anyone have any thoughts on this idea?

  • @chrismaverick9828

The biggest thing I can complain about the movie's ending is the utter plot-filling that happened. A bunch of Top Gun Graduates are immediately shipped halfway across the world to deal with an issue that is essentially a Barrier Combat Air Patrol (BARCAP), something that the carrier's own pilots could have easily taken care of. Top Gun was not about training pilots in air to air combat, as they had already learned that even before a first deployment at sea. Top Gun is about advanced techniques and tactics to create leaders among the regular cadre of pilots. Pilot-Plus, if you will.
So they spend the whole movie working on dogfighting techniques centered around gun kills (which does apply in practice), supposedly because of an over-reliance on missiles, but then use nothing but missiles in the end. Furthermore, Maverick is the hero of the day because of his three MiG kills, but no one mentions Iceman who held off FIVE enemy fighters in an entirely defensive engagement for the upwards of ten minutes that it took Maverick to get there.
Iceman was the superior pilot and tactician. Maverick was the wildcard with instinct and skill, something that was vaguely spelled out in the sequel in their exchange. Iceman matured to understand that you can be the greatest tactical fighter pilot in the world in regards to book and technique, but you still need one wildcard among a hundred by-the-book pilots to keep things fresh and unpredictable against the enemy.
