Not afraid to admit I cried in the theater when I saw Egon with Phoebe. Before the movie even came out I had heard rumors and bits and pieces and had this idea of seeing all four ghostbusters using their proton packs together one last time. So when I actually saw it I just started crying in my seat. It was such a great send-off for someone who grew up loving the movies and cartoons and toys etc.

We 80’s kids sobbed like children through the end of this movie. My sister had a huge crush on Egon and Harold Ramis and my other sister and i saw this before she did. We warned her husband to take A LOT of tissues when they went to see it. She called us as soon as it ended and her breath was still hitching & she could barely speak she was still crying so hard. Her husband was like, Are you ok?! She yelled back, NO!!! Yeah this one really got to us! 😭😂❤️

It wasn't until I saw it the second time that I welled up with tears at the whole Egon scene. The first time I was in awe of just how well they handled the whole bringing Egon back with CG. I was too blown away to cry. But the second time I saw it, even though I knew it was coming, I felt all the feels so strongly. That said, I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my grandfather almost 3 years ago and, other than my mom and dad, he was the biggest, strongest pillar and moral compass of my family. I can feel where you're coming from. The sheer amount of behind-the-scenes work that went into this movie was nuts. All effects that could be were practical (the Terror Dogs looked *so* good, and the proton beams were hand-drawn like in the original movie) and they spent over 6 months on the CGI model of Harold Ramis. Ivan Reitman performed the performance capture for it. The music cues borrowed from the first movie were modern re-records, but they were able to get some of the surviving original musicians from 1984 to play them.
I agree with the common criticisms that the movie was reference/nostalgia overload and the 3rd act was basically copied beat-for-beat, but at the same time I think it needed to be that way to get everyone on board for the sequel. And I think Jason Reitman did it all because he was actually there for the filming of the first 2 movies, rather than for crass commercial reasons. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel and seeing Mckenna Grace and Logan Kim again.

Yes, there’s like one or two issues I also have with it (like any film, and as a GB movie, it’s practically impossible to be as perfect as the first one) but like other movies I’ve seen either recently like The Batman or a long time ago like Jurassic Park, the good stuff is SO damn good, it about cancels out any of the bad stuff for me.
Being a fan of Ramis’ work, you can feel how they tried really damn hard not just to make a GB3 but a GB3 that paid as much tribute as possible to one of the people that, without him, we wouldn’t have Ghostbusters or some of the other great comedic films in the 80s as we know it, and it paid off, thanks to the Ramis family for practically being there every step of the way helping alongside Jason Reitman. Probably my most favorite film of 2021, by far.

Yeah, I was just watching a thing the other night where Jason reitman was talking with the actor that played Winston, while wandering around the original set for the firehouse interior in California, and explaining 'yeah, so those stairs over there were where I sat like thirty odd years ago during Ghostbusters 2 watching you guys film with my dad.'
So glad he was involved in getting this made after so many years. Bill Murray axed the original movie aykroyd wanted to make as GB3 in the mid 2000s, claiming they could never catch lightning in a bottle like they did the first time. The script for that apparently mostly became the events of the Ghostbusters video game that came out back then.
This was a GREAT sendoff for Harold though. It's the only possible way they could have made this movie right.

It got some hate because of politics. Mainly from the cast and some of the crew from the dumpster fire that was the 2016 ghostbusters, a movie that was created to push politics. If you didn’t like their movie, you were called everything from mysoginist to racist. So when Afterlife was announced and they pretty much outright said 2016 ghostbusters didn’t exist anymore, some of the cast and crew from 2016 started attacking Afterlife with nonsensical political “arguments”. Some even called Afterlife a “conservative” movie, something that I’m still trying to figure out. Afterlife was also attacked as fan service, which is a “smear” that makes no sense whatsoever considering you’re supposed to give fans what they want in order for your movie to be successful.
It’s just another instance of politics infecting entertainment.

blue ghost was Muncher, and surprise he was voiced by Josh Gad.
He was invited to tour the farm location set one day and was asked if he'd like to voice a ghost and recorded Muncher the same day.

Born in '87 I grew up with these movies. I went as a Egon Spengler for my first 5-6 Halloweens. He was my favorite character because he was the nerdy science type, like me. I have seen this movie at least 20 times. I still cry like a baby every time Egon shows up.

I cried during the dramatic climax of this movie.
I grew up with the franchise, it was and still is one of the few franchises I'm a true diehard for.
Losing Harold Ramis was a serious blow not just for fans of Ghostbusters, the man helped make films some might not even realize.
Seeing the old gang come back, him having a goodbye, it just... I ugly cried during my first viewing.
Also, hearing that his family was fully on board for digitally bringing his character and likeness back for this, it really hit me hard
after losing my own father only a few years prior.

I'm late to the party, but just to reiterate, words fall short at how much this movie means to me and others of my generation. Afterlife did exactly what it needed to. It gave a great send-off for Harold Ramis, and served the rest of us up a big dose of nostalgia feel-goods. And yeah, I totally cried when Egon's ghost was revealed at the end.

Not sure if you caught this homage, but in the first movie Egon states that he collected “spores, molds and fungi…”. Then when Phoebe first explores his hidden underground lab, it shows his collection.

You missed one of the greatest callbacks in cinema history. When the granddaughter goes down to the hidden lab for the first time, she passes a desk full of petri dishes. In the first movie when the secretary asks Egon what are his hobbies he responds, "I collect Spores, Molds and Fungus." That table of petri dishes she passed is full of Spores, Molds and Funguses.
A beautiful quick and quiet call back.

Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd actually created the whole idea for Ghostbusters btw.

    All Phoebe’s dad jokes :
Why can’t you trust an atom?
    Because they make up everything.
Mr. Grooberson says he knows what triangulate means.
Phoebe: Oh, I thought you were just being obtuse. (winks)
What does a hamster have in common with a cigarette?
(Pause) They’re harmless, unless you stick ’em in your mouth and light them on fire.
What do you call a fish with no eyes?
    A fsh
There’s two whales in a bar, one says *whale sounds*
The other says “You need to go home you’re drunk.”
What do you call a dead polar bear?
Whatever you want, he can’t hear you.
A grasshopper walks into a bar and the bartender says “We have a drink named after you!”
So the grasshopper says, “You have a drink named Steve?!”

Even though the setting is different this time around, there is reasoning behind it.
“Cold riveted girders with cores of pure selenium.” - Ray from the first film
The selenium had to come from *somewhere*, so Sumerville was founded, along with everything that was necessary to mine, process, and ship it to NYC, all thanks to Ivo Shandor.
