Trivia about Peter Cushing in this (Tarkin): Because they had to make a mold of his head to create the enlarged eye gag for this film, the makers of Rogue One were able to obtain that mold to get an accurate scan of Peter Cushing's head for the digital recreation of Tarkin!
Well East and West Germany didnt exist until after the war, the movie is set in 1984! But with Nazi left in for lauffs!
Top Secret will forever confuse people who've never seen the blue lagoon with that one sequence. :D

I rewatched LoA a few days ago. It's arguably my fav movie, competing with Gandhi and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

@@genericnamehere7602 Let's not forget that Sharif reunited here with composer Maurice Jarre, who did the scores and won 2 Best Original Score Oscars for both those David Lean epics.
Not to mention, in the same year (1984) as _Top Secret!,_ Jarre composed the score and won his 3rd Best Original Score Oscar for _A Passage to India,_ David Lean's final film.
Not as legendary an actor as Mr Sharif, but Leslie Nielsen was also a dramatic actor before "Airplane!" Not so much after that.
The genius of the Zucker/Abrahams comedies is that the main characters were always playing it straight. it was only the situations around them that were insane.
It's Like Graham Chapman plays the role of King Arthur and Brian.
When he wasn't drunk, je plays everything straight.

Absolutely! I remember watching the directors' commentary for Airplane, and how Robert Stack didn't get the jokes. He was friends with Lloyd Bridges, though, who told him "We are the joke." The fact that actors of their caliber were playing the same roles they would be playing in the serious movies that Airplane was lampooning, and doing it straight, was the joke.
One of my favorite gags in this movie is the way it can't decide if it's set in WW2 Germany or cold war East Germany, and just randomly goes with whichever seems to fit the plot at any given moment.
Also, the movie never bothers to explain what the French Resistance is doing in East Germany.

He got credit since this movie is partly why he got picked to portray Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991) - in which he also sang
Val's first movie after graduating from Juilliard. From what I remember he didn't want this movie, scared of getting comedy typecast. But he could sing and dance. The Doors is another great example of his singing. What a bummer he got throat cancer. Very talented man.

Yes! I've seen this movie a ton of times, but didn't even put together that these two actors were in TWO movies together until the gents pointed him out during this reaction video 🤣 That BLOWS my mind. I wonder if they talked about it on the BATMAN FOREVER set.
Hot take - even though it wasn't the best Batman movie, I still think Val Kilmer was the best Live-Action Batman.

Val Kilmer sang all the songs for this himself in the studio. This movie is what convinced the casting director of The Doors to offer him the role of Jim Morrison.
And I believe the background singers were actually singers for Elvis as well.

When it comes to visual gags, Top Secret has no equal! The perspective gags in particular are AMAZING.

Also the beach scene was a parody of blue lagoon starring Brooke shields. It was a highly controversial film at the time so that scene was much more topical back then
The backwards scene did have the actor that was Tarkin in Star Wars. Extra fun it was because this movie made a mold of that actors face to create the eye prosthetic that the mold was available for Lucas Film to use it to help create the CG face of Tarkin in Rogue One.

Hillary's deserted island story is a riff on the movie Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields that had come out recently. I don't recommend it, but just so you know.

This movie is genuinely one of the most technically impressive films ever. The effects are incredible

Good one guys. Thats the legendary and fabulous Omar Sharif in the beginning, in the trenchcoat. He made his first movie appearance in the epic Lawrence Of Arabia.
Still hillarious they got him for that role. Amazing actor.
Not only was Omar a great actor, he was also a world class Bridge player.
But he was most famous for starring in "Doctor Zhivago".
The most underrated Zucker/Abrahms film.
Sight gags are something that you dont see a lot of anymore in movies. This has always been a classic of mine and im glad you guys enjoyed it.
Love your reactions. I was cracking up watching y’all crack up. 40 years later and this movie never stops delivering the laughs, even when you know the gags by heart. I think this may have been Val Kilmer’s first leading role.

I first saw this after getting really stoned and going to a Chinese buffet with a buddy of mine. During lunch he mentioned this movie and I said I never saw it, so we went straight to the video store and rented the VHS tape. Such a great movie. I also stole a soup spoon from the restaurant that I cherished for years until it got lost.
Fun fact, the head mold they made from Peter Cushing for the magnifying glass effect was the same one that was scanned to CGI him into Rogue One.
Also the most underrated gag in the film has to be near the start when they're showing Nick's hit songs as Skeet Surfing plays, and they're all about skeet shooting.
Val does all his own singing in this. In The Doors too, which is definitely worth checking out.
5:18 The start of the dance is the same dance Maria and the Captain do during the party in "The Sound of Music". After a while Maria claims she doesn't remember the rest of the dance - that's where it gets goofy in this film!

This movie has so many surreal set pieces but my favorite gag in it is the one with the Janitor's Closet. Omar Shariff, the spy who was compacted inside his car, was an actor in many epic drams including Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. Having an actor of such gravity playing comedy straight-faced is a wonder.
My Grandmother was a huge fan of these older, long epic movies like Zhivago or Ben Hur.
When she got older, I visited her and we sat in her living room, chatting and watching TV when Top Secret came on while zapping, and my dear old Grandma *literally* said "Shit, is that Dr Zhivago?" From that on she was totally invested in the movie.

@@bighuge1060 The real kicker was Grandma using actually using the word "shit" (or "Scheiße", as we're Austrian) - she wasn't above swearing, but she barely used that particular word.
And yeah, she thoroughly enjoyed it. Used that to introduce her to the rest of the classics - Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Airplane... naturally, a lot of the movie references didn't click as she barely saw any of the relevant movies, but she still laughed a whole lot.

Hearing you guys laugh reminds me of when my friend and I went to see this when we were 15. After the movie ended we sat there for about 10 minutes laughing til we cried over every part of it. We didn't notice until we got up to leave that there was a group of teenage boys who had stayed to laugh at US. It was a little embarrassing at the time but it's a funny memory now. This movie is hilarious no matter how many times I see it.

Correct. There are some movies, & this is one, Airplane is another, that the second you laugh at one joke, you miss the next joke & you're laughing, a lot. That's one of the reasons this has such a wide appeal & cult following. Also I'm 70, & got a completely different set of jokes from this in the theater 30 years ago than a 30 year old gets from it on TH-cam today. But we both can't stop laughing & we both tell each other what a funny movie it is. Unaware 1/2 the jokes we were laughing at, the other person didn't catch.

See, with the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abrahams, you can always tell theyre going for the parody angle Mel Brooks likes doing a lot in his movies... whether that works out well depends on the movie. The Naked Gun was probably their best work, imo.

An absolute must comedy with Val Kilmer is Real Genius. Also, another great parody movie you should react to is Johnny Dangerously with Michael Keaton. It parodies gangster movies.

Albert Potato may not be a giant in his field, but he can certainly tell you a thing or two about who is and isn’t Mel Torme.
Deserted island scene a spoof on the 1980 movie Blue Lagoon (Brooks Shields and Christopher Atkins).
Tarkin is Peter Cushing. He and Christopher Lee were Hammer Studio's big money making pair in the 60s and 70s. Cushing played Van Helsing to Lee's Dracula, and Dr. Frankenstein to Lee's monster. You guys should definitely check it out.

In those Hammer Studio films, Cushing often did look for clues using a big magnifying glass. So that is part of the gag here.

You guys should check out another great Val Kilmer film (his best role in my opinion), Tombstone. It is a fantastic western and Val steals the scenes he is in. Also, Val Kilmer was originally a theatre kid who trained at Julliard! That's why he can dance pretty well.

The Diner scene was a parody of the scene from the Elvis movie Loving You. In that movie, Elvis played a guy named Deke Rivers who was a small town boy that got discovered by accident and became a singing sensation.
And in the concert scene, a sign held up reads "VELCOME NEEK!" which rhymes with Deke! Of course the joke is more on German accents but hey.
This movie is a comedy masterpiece.

In this film, Omar Sharif has in common with Leslie Nielsen, a past career of serious acting-suddenly turned to comedy gold; Peter Cushing too, I suppose.

one of the best parts of this movie is that Val actually sang and recorded the songs as Nick and they are on the films soundtrack

Another great Val Kilmer flick is "Thunderheart". More mystery than comedy.
The scene in the pizza restaurant is a copy of Elvis singing “I Got A Woman” in his film “Loving You”. The name Nick Rivers is also influenced by this movie, because Elvis uses the name Deke Rivers in it, which you find out is something his character adopted to cover up his actual identity.

For a lesser known comedy, it has some of the most amazing visuals. The underwater fight is genius

The backwards sequence is almost flawless. If you look though, Val Kilmer has to very slightly search for the doorknob at the start/end. Which, considering he'd just done that whole scene and made those book catches and walked 12 feet backwards, isn't too shabby.

"Top Secret" and "Real Genius" not only were frequently played on our VCR growing up in the 80s, but they both made me a lifelong fan of Val Kilmer Kilmer.
Great movie . This is from the same directors and Airplane and The Naked Gun Trilogy. Other great Val Kilmer movies are Wilow and The Saint. Fyi the Island Hillary story is a spoof on the movie Blue Lagoon.
Comedy masterpiece.
IIRC, hiccups are caused by cramps in the diaphragm (the muscle just underneath the ribcage, slightly below the solar plexus). So what you do to relax the muscle is you raise your elbows to shoulder-height and take several deep slow breaths, count to seven and then let them out slower than you inhaled. It also works for when you're really tired and yawn a lot.

i Highly Recommend Real Genius & Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, both are great Comedies with Val Kilmer in them (it's a shame he didn't do more Comedy because he's great in them), also Willow which he's amazing in.
