I love the 1985 version. You are right it is wonderful. I resisted Anne with an E but I confess watching it two times through and grew to love it also. Very different but very moving.
I love your messages at the end - I watched while getting ready for work and it was the perfect way to start my Monday. And yeah, Meghan Follows will always be Anne :)
I love LOVE the series Road To Avonlea which is based on Montgomery’s books The Story Girl, The Golden Road, Chronicles of Avonlea and Further Chronicles of Avonlea. A lot of the characters and actors from the movie were in the series too. It was on for 7 years and it’s definitely something you would enjoy but the books are nothing like the show
I loved seeing your review of the book, specially the lessons learned. A lot of your lessons were the same as mine. It's such a beautiful story, such beautiful and complex characters... I also read the 3 first books, and really loved all of them, and I'm very excited to read the other ones too.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video! I still haven't read past the first three but they are so good! I should make a video for the next Anne movie sometime.
I really wish I'd discovered these books as a tween. I didn't find out about them until 1985, with the mini, when I was 19. It would've been helpful to tween me to know there were weird "kindred spirits" like me out there!
I recommend with all my heart the 70s anime adaptation, for me it is the most faithful adaptation of the book. By having 65 episodes of 20 minutes each, the series can take all the time it needs to develop Avonlea's characters and mundane situations. And above all, for me it is the greatest success, it is a contemplative series, as you had mentioned, there is no great argument moving the plot, it is just the life of a girl experiencing and loving the world.
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all time faves. Love the movie too. I think Megan Follows is a perfect Anne. Puff sleeves 💕 This is a comfort read for me too. I haven’t seen Anne With an E. I’m sad to hear it’s darker since I don’t think that’s necessary and takes away from the wholesomeness of it. 😊💙
Yeah, since making this video I've heard more about the show and I don't have much interest anymore. Too bad there hasn't been a good adaptation in recent years! But the one from the 80s is so perfect
@@WhytheBookWins I watched both the movies and the show and I can confirm it's a good show although it's not 100% book accurate, it does have a lot of stuff that is not in the books or movies but I recommend watching it either way, there's some important topics on the show that make it worth watching.
when my family visited PEI I remember being disappointed to find out that Avonlea does not really exist, I remember being a 10 year old little girl being captivated by the Anne of green Gables 1985 movie and only reading the book that I loved after visiting PEI. The really Green Gables is beautiful too a house where L.M.Montgomery lived Annes Room was so close to the movie adaptation. For Anyone who Loves Anne a visit to Green Gables PEI is a must.
i started reading the books because Anne with E which then lead me to watch the old movie adaptation! I basically started backward as you! I see so many people who grew up with books that Netflix adaptation is too “dark” To be frank from my perspective it wasn’t at all. The netflix show just more depth of the reality of what Anne went through but has a great balence too it. If anything it makes me love Anne characters all the more because of it. The actress does an amazing job so i highly recommend the show!!
I don’t think Anne with an E is too dark, I just think it’s probably a bit more realistic and fleshed out. There is the conversation Anne has with Marilla about if those woman were good to her, Anne clearly alludes to trauma, that they were not good to her. I also really liked the portrayal of residential schools. It seems more realistic and responsible retelling, than just another idyllic remake. The 1985 version still exists
I liked Anne With an E overall, but it added a LOT of ridiculous stuff - like her rescuing people in a fire. Like, she's a fire-person now? Book knowledge is cool, but not putting yourself in danger. 🤷♀️
I actually read the first 4 books and bought the whole set because of Anne with an E just because I found it was inspired by Anne of Green Gables. I love Anne with an E and I will say they definably have a more modern look to old timey problems and customs so it is darker in the sense of it talk a bit negatively about the time period, which I understand complete but I wish it didn't after reading the book. I absoluly adore Anne with an E but its not the same as how I love the Anne of Green Gables book and 1985 movie series.
It's funny how I ended up becoming interested in Anne Shirley. I finished watching the CW's Reign and learned more about the actress Megan Follows. I saw old interviews, which spoke of her breaking role as Anne of Green Gables. I enjoyed reading Little Women and Heidi in the recent years, so I thought I'll read this entire series, then watch the movie starring Follows. I'm on book 6. If I were recommending this to a friend I would say that the best book is the first one, read up until the 3rd, and maybe House of Dreams for extra credit. I think it loses it's charm as she ages. This is more due to the writing than the character itself. The themes or nuggets of wisdom are well thought out in those first books. It drags out with fluff and gossip the more you read. I'm still going to finish it to meet my goal. I appreciate the comparison with the movie. I honestly don't think Follows looks like a red hair with gray-green eyes and freckles, but if she embodies the kindred spiritedness and girlishness of Anne, I will enjoy her portrayal. Also I'm looking forward to the movie not disappointing in the romance of the two lovers. That's an aspect the books gave me false hope in and did not fulfill. There is no queer beat or love letter once Anne and Gilbert get engaged. Granted the latter are omitted in Windy Poplars for privacy sake (don't ever read that book, it's mighty dreadful). Much less is there romance when they welcome their first children in their Four Winds tiny house o dreams. Definitely looking forward to wrapping this up to read other classics.
As someone who has read the entire series, I recommend you also read the sequels. Yes, the 4th book is really boring, but please do not give up reading the entire series just because of this book. In addition, the romance between Anne and Gilbert is described in detail, but with sweet moments, in the sequel books.
@@WhytheBookWins The rest of the series is worth looking at, but keep this in mind: They were not written in order. Book four (Anne of Windy Poplars) and book six (Anne of Ingelside) were written quite a bit later. As the series progressed, Montgomery was tired of writing the Anne books, and wished to write other things. She continued to write Anne because of pressure from fans and her publisher. This does come through in those books. They are not terrible though. I think you will really like book five (Anne's House of Dreams) and book eight (Rilla of Ingleside), both being favourites of mine in the series after the original. There is actually a ninth book, but that was only really acknowledged in the last ten to fifteen years. "The Blythes are Quoted'" was delivered to her publisher shortly before her death, but was not published for decades after. An edited down version, titled "The Road to Yesterday" was published in the 1970s as a short story collection. The stories were edited, changed order, and the dialogues and poems in between the stories were removed. One story was omitted altogether, and later published with another short story collection. In recent years, the original version "The Blythes are Quoted," was published as originally intended by Montgomery. As for other books by Montgomery, I highly recommend the Emily books: Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs, and Emily's Quest. There was a television series from the 1990s, but I don't think it was very good. The Story Girl and the Golden Road are another series. Road to Avonlea, another television series from the 1990s was supposed to be based on these books, plus two short story collections (Chronicles of Avonlea, and Further Chronicles of Avonlea.) The television series is wonderful, though it doesn't really stay based on the books for long. Another Montgomery book that got a screen treatment is one of her last novels "Jane of Lantern Hill" which was made in to a television film "Lantern Hill." I don't know what to make of the adaptation. I used to like it when I was younger, but then I didn't anymore when I got older. And then there is my favourite Montgomery book which I would recommend to anyone: The Blue Castle. It doesn't have a screen adaptation, so just enjoy on it's own.
Hmm maybe I'm not sure about the show. I would like to cover the next movie that combines the next two books at some point and maybe from there I would try out the show as well.
Avonlea School isn't perfect: in an episode of The Road to Avonlea, Sally Potts & Jane Spry draw a "piggy" picture of poor Clemmie Ray, on a slate. However, it is more idyllic than my own school: the girls don't seem to be obsessed with nagging each other to shave any body-parts; and there are no accusations of flatulence!
I've tried to watch the Netflix adaptation on Anne of Green Gables twice now and stalled out early on. The first time I couldn't get past an episode that was not inspired by the book five or six episodes in, the second after just the first. I agree, what's wrong with a light and fun show? I found myself sad and crying several times which is not in keeping with the spirit of Anne. Such a shame because the actors who portray Anne, Marilla, and Matthew are so perfectly cast.
It's literally viewing the children's books through adult eyes. It pulls from the themes in the books and makes them realistic. That's the point of the show. There are many adaptations of the books that are just lighthearted and where everything is fine forever.
I was very excited when Anne with an E came out, I had nostalgia having to watch Anne of Green Gables with my sister growing up and didn’t really understand how much I appreciated it until I was older. I cried with Anne with an E because I was so happy to be revisiting that era and the stories bit with each season, I was HIGHLY disappointed with the direction they took it. Within the last 5 years, you can’t watch a tv show aimed toward the young audience without it being politically correct and this show regurgitated it everywhere. It was no longer inspired by but totally erasing the wholesomeness of Anne of Green Gables. I am glad they cut it. It took so long for them to get no where with the side stories and super unrealistic events. I really could go on and on the more that resurfaces my memory, so I’ll stop here lol

I completely agree. I'm currently on the 3rd book now. The original movies are the only ones I've ever watched too!
