Great video! Im gonna sub for sure. I love spiderman but anyone who thinks that a game that is 35 hours long, linear af, repetitive and also is only available to 1/4 of gamers worldwide could be GOTY is just simply ridiculous. BG3 won, and rightfully so. Im sure AW2 was really good and Zelda too but BG3 has it all. IMO its not even close man. BG3 is the best game ive played in a long time and possibly the best game ive ever played.

I think there is another feature that contributed to Baldur's Gate 3's success and that's "accessibility". By having full voice and performance captured dialogue to describe 90% of the game's story it makes the CRPG genre accessible to players who don't like reading pages of text. By changing the D&D game system to be more intuitive and forgiving for newer players they made this more accessible to players who aren't already familiar with it or with the "always be prepared" RPG gaming attitude. This introduced an entirely new audience to CRPGs and for people not used to how immersive and fun a CRPG can be this made the game seem even more special.

YES. That's been the biggest obstacle for CRPG's. Games have gotten way more stimulating and graphically rich and less mechanically dense/complex with time. CRPG's have been trippling down on mechanical density/complexity without much improvement to presentation, they're still great games but no freaking way are you gonna convince anyone who's not already into CRPG's to play the new Pathfinder or something.
BG3's mechanics are easy to understand with a high mastery ceiling with beautiful presentation. It's not reading text story for hours, then reading text stats/perks/mechanics for hours, then reading status effects/conditions/buffs for hours in combat. It's snappy, easy to get your hands on, and tempts you to get deeper.

Larian saved gaming, or definitely helped save it. Without Elden Ring or BG3 Bethesda would have the world convinced games like starfield is a work of art, and is what to expect going forward. Honestly the entire Game Awards this year felt more like a battle for second place due to just how massive BG3 was. If you were on the internet this year, you would know that it would get GOTY, and there was just no arguing that, so it was really surprising to me that there we genuinely people expecting something else, especially the Sony crowd shouting that SM2 was snubbed despite their game not even being a contender.

@@Lorekeeper72it’s because any console fanboy needs to try and justify their purchases by overhyping everything that comes out as exclusive. Sony fanboys tried to convince everyone Spider-Man was hands down GOTY despite not innovating anything. It truly felt exactly like the Arkham games but with more tedious traveling and less features than the previous titles. Same with Xbox fanboys trying to convince people halo infinite was half good. 343 killed halo and Microsoft couldn’t care less about exclusives at this point. With each console generation, fewer and fewer games that are worth a damn come out which makes the consoles as good as paperweights for non casuals.

I've worked in game dev a bit, and I can offer a bit of insight that will either make BG3 even more admirable or break the illusion a little bit, for those who don't already know:
In order to make the gameplay so freeing and imaginative, BG3 leverages a lot of the same principles that made BOTW and TOTK so groundbreaking. That is, rather than scripting certain enemy/environment interactions, certain assets/abilities/mechanics are given a comprehensive list of properties that have the potential to interact with other assets/abilities/mechanics with similar/opposing properties. To use the giant boulder and grease example that you mentioned, it's not that the designers planned for giant things to be easier to move on slick ground (though they probably did); it's that they laid the groundwork for various properties to alter the gameplay in realistic ways. In this case, rough terrain + slick substance = slippery ground that reduces traction for all objects that traverse it. These systems are so carefully and comprehensively prepared for that it's hard to imagine certain interactions not being planned. Of course, this freedom can also mean a lot of bugs and exploits, many of which are still being quashed to this day. What's amusing is that Larian's left a lot of game-breaking mechanics in the game because it's part of what makes the game so amusing.
Ironically, this method of allowing for what's sometimes referred to as "emergent" interactions is something that game devs historically programmed against specifically, for fear of invariably creating those bugs and exploits. There was nothing inherently wrong in that approach, and in linear games that needed to follow a specific flow, it was definitely the right choice. But as modern tech allows for more grandiose open worlds and real-time physics, a lot of the restraints are lifted, allowing for some incredible gameplay moments that are often just happy accidents.
Finally, great video. It was very well put together, and I think you have a lot of potential in this niche.

Hey, thank you for pointing out the whole 'lazy' dev thing. Baldur's Gate 3 is amazing, and I love that it's got the attention it has. In a year with Bethesda slop like Starfield, it's really satisfying to see a fully-fledged finished game on release with no microtransactions.
But as you say the devs aren't at fault when it comes to bad games, it's the higher-ups who put their staff on crunch and only care about profit margins. It was really upsetting to see people dogpile on a dev for pointing out that this game was only possible with an experienced team and a big budget, especially when the tweet that started off the whole "Lazy devs are intimidated by BG3!" newscycle was done by a pretty productive and impressive indie dev.
This wasn't someone highup in a big corporation who is at fault for shipping terrible games, they directly participate in making and selling great independent titles.
I know at least one other person has said this (the brilliant Jim Stephanie Sterling) but thank you for also bringing it up. Anyway, it's always nice to see love for BG3. Has put my faith back in games again.

Not only was bg3 a solid release that really didn't need any upgrades, larian still consistently creates new content for the game FOR FREE.
Any other dev would have probably put honor mode and custom mode difficulties under a paywall. Maybe even the magic mirror.
And larian is still adding new things to this day. They could've just been fixing bugs exclusively with the patches and hotfixes. But they also use that as an opportunity to add new things for the players to enjoy.
I am incredibly excited to see the future of larian 10+ years down the line and no developer has ever elicited that response from me.

      @thelifeofkenji4900 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Why do you think this year has been best for gaming?
IMO this year was completely carried by BG3, all the other titles (excluding Alan Wake and BG3) are sequels of previous years games that don't really innovate much.
RE4 is fine, but is the same as their other remakes.
TOTK is BOTW with some building.
Spiderman, again contributres barely anything new to its established formula.
Mario, I know nothing of that title, but I don't imagine its much different than the hundreds of other mario titles.
None of them really were a contender for the title if we're being realistic. 2022, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2015 all had more innovation in their nominee selection than this year. Or do you have different opinions on what makes a year for gaming best?
I don't know how to write this reply without sounding like I'm being passive aggressive on the internet, I'm genuinely curious.

@@thelifeofkenji4900 Only one game nominated for GOTY had micro transactions. No live services were nominated while Bethesda, Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and WB didn't get a free pass for phoning it in. Games like Spider-Man 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 never get nominated often at the game awards. Like the Oscars, journalists get together and vote for games they like. For a licensed superhero game and a CRPG, which is considered a niche genre to both get several nominations in the same year and to be nominated for GOTY is a huge feat within itself. Every game nominated for GOTY really did represent what is possible in gaming if you just put out feature complete titles and make games to be fun instead of habit forming. There were so many great games, that a lot got overlooked like Armored Core VI, Cassette Beasts, Dave the Diver, Pikmen 4, Hi-Fi Rush, and Street Fighter VI, Mario RPG and many others. With greedy corpos in the game industry trying to put out low-effort, wallet bleeding titles, this was a great wakeup call.
Baldur's Gate 3 especially was so spectacular that other developers tried to call out that it shouldn't set a new standard or not to expect the same level of quality from them. This stuff was said even before the game released. On top of that Baldur's Gate 3 was a passion project. Larian had to purchase the rights to Dungeons and Dragons from Wizards of the Coast, and nearly went bankrup because WotC kept rejecting offers until Larian made one they couldn't refuse. That was just for the license to make the game without even considering production costs. Larian is also for all intents and purposes an indie studio with no pull in the industry compared to Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. They knocked it out of the park and went above and beyond to even beat out Alan Wake 2, which most likely would've swept the game awards.

If that was true, then why GTA5 is still in the trending game on my PS5 when I bough this game on my PS3 before the release of PS4 in 2013? I saw 250,000 players on this game on Steam last week, an 10 years old game. Counter-Strike, a Half-life mod game, I was playing it with 640x480p in 1999-2000 at my parents home... Well now CS2 is #1 on Steam with 500,000 to 1,200,000 players playing it on a daily basis. Honestly, after buying Baldur's Gate 3, the feel of those older games came back right in our face, which doesn't fit with games surrounding it, without microtransaction and battle pass, which does create that feeling of not caring about others games this year. I only care about Baldur's Gate 3 this year. I barely touch Diablo 4, Elden Ring or any games. I still spend time on Starcraft 2, Rocket League, but those public comments from devs and companies about Baldur's Gate 3 and how Sony is hiding the game as much as possible and still putting GTA5 in front line does say everything about the corruption and moneyseeker from people who does not care about gamers, they care about more clients and finding a way to be paying more money for them. When GA came, after declaring the winner I wondered "What the hell is Baldur's Gate (yes, it WAS under the radar for me and everyone I know) and why does it get so much praise.
After reading reviews and descriptions of the game, I thought it to be absurd, people simply overexaggerating it.
All I will say is that I decided to give it a shot, to see are these surreal descriptions of Deep exploration and vast dialogue options really true. After I did, I couldn't stop playing it. I still AM playing it. Not only is this game revolutionary, but it is what games should be.
In conclusion, any Spider Man fan who still disses BG3 is just an ignorant individual incapable of realizing BG's mastery. They look at Fortnite and call it a good game 😂💀

People these days don’t know what an RPG means. BG3 is an RPG in the true sense where you can create and play a role and where your choices actually make a difference. It’s modelled on old
school PC RPGs but modernised without making it too dumbed down. And while Spider-Man 2 is good, it’s just more Spider-Man. While TotK is good, it’s just more of Breath of the Wild. BG3 feels fresh compared to these options and it’s one of those rare games that pushes the genre forward and opens it up for new players.

Starfield 3/5, more like a 2/10, the only good thing that game has is the ship customization. Besides all the bugs and loading screens, it's the horrible AI, flying feels like a on rail shooter, entering and leaving a planet is a loading screen, the gun play feeling really outdated, reusing locations on multiple planets like the facility full of being 1-1 the same. The worse is the lack of consequences and the illusion that your choices actually matter when they don't for the vast majority of quest which are extremely hand holding. I voted online this year and gave all my votes to BG3. If you didn't vote, don't complain. And if you didn't play a game that won, then don't be mad cause you don't understand why it would win. If Spiderman had won over BG3 I wouldn't understand but I didn't play it so maybe it did deserve a win and maybe it would get me to play it. I don't feel like people are having that response, they're just getting mad.

and people forget how longe Larian had to perfect their formular for BG3, from the Divinity OS Series to the over a year long Early Access.... Larian just had the time to polish their game design what many games simply cant afford. Not that they dont have the time but that most Devs dont get the time from higher up to have such a long early access or the chance to create some lesser known games in order to "beta test" your gameplay systems.

The real triumph of BG3 is they swept against Bethesda, Capcom, Nintendo, Sony, Blizzard and Epic. The supposed industry giants who banded together to curb our enthusiasm for a future, where every company with a legitimate budget can produce products we're proud to play.
"I'm not gaming, I'm being gamed". All the Spiderman and Bethesda fanboys need to demand better. The standards have been raised and its on us to hold them accountable to those standards.

I'm going with "because it was the best game of the year". The story was phenomenal. The gameplay, while not necessarily my favorite style, was coherent and exactly what they wanted to to be. The NPCs were memorably good. The story branches were incredibly well done. Cause and effect was done better than any other game that I have ever played.
What future game developers have to take from BG3 has nothing to do with game mechanics, graphics, or anything else new. The best aspects of BG3 could have been in a game 30 years ago (and sometimes they were). Writing. Deep NPCs. Meaningful choices. That has nothing to do with tech. It's the core of a good game.
Quick plug for my favorite game of the last 5 years: Kingdom Come Deliverance. That game had all of the above as well.

For context: I generally dislike top-down games. I generally dislike turn-based games. I mostly dislike roll-to-hit mechanics.
Baldur's Gate 3 is literally built around all of these, and I still love this game. It's easily in my top favourite games of all time, alongside The Witcher 3, KotOR 1 & 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Skyrim and Mass Effect. Larian managed to take a bunch of things that 99% of the time turn me off to a game, and they made it _fun_ for me. And that coupled with fantastic companions with great acting performances... Yeah, that merits game of the year. For me personally, best game since TW3.

Since I started playing DoS2 and especially after BG3 I can’t really go back to other games. The fact that your choices not only in the world but in combat as well have an effect that lasts for the entire game is incredible. The player’s decisions genuinely dictate the story of the world.
One bit that was really awesome was from act 2. Without spoiling, after completing a certain quest a certain NPC, who you’ve known from act 1, celebrates your accomplishment and calls you a hero and to me that felt awesome because I had the option to completely abandon them and still continue on the main story just fine. But I CHOSE to save them and it made me realise that your player character’s reputation is dictated by your actions and is known among the people you’ve saved. It’s not simply because that’s just who you are. Not to poop on SM2, I love that game it’s awesome, but you can ignore all the crimes and cries for help and you’re still the hero and the story still completes just fine.
If ignored every NPC in BG3 that cried for help I could miss out on HOURS of content simply because I didn’t bother to talk to that person.

Disagree on the Borderlands 3 part. UVHM was a garbage unbalanced mess in BL2, and OP levels made it worse. It got to a point where slag became mandatory otherwise you would do basically no damage and the only way to beat raid bosses is with ultra cheese builds, or normal builds with 4 people. It’s also counter productive because Borderlands is not traditionally multiplayer focused. It’s a solo game with multiplayer as an optional bonus.
BL3 is way better balanced but is too easy and doesn’t feel rewarding to play. The story is also terrible but narratively makes sense. The villains are cringe asf but they’re from an isolated planet with a weird dad and clearly developed garbage social skills. Borderlands 3 is better balanced but the story drags at some parts (Eden-6 has like 2 or 3 whole missions that could’ve just been removed and it would’ve been better). Borderlands 3 NOW is great though because of the end game challenges and longer expansions, but when the game came out it was pretty thin for content

Kinda weird that games that are widely considered some of the best games of all-time wouldn't be Game of the Year in the year they were released.
Games are far less expensive now than they have ever been (when adjusting for inflation).

Thank you for speaking out on Breath of the Wild. It was boring and empty as heck. I doubt I’ll ever play another Zelda game.

SM2 was awesome, but it surprises me why it was considered for GOTY over others. Jedi Survivor was better in every single way in my opinion: story, combat, world, length, characters, visuals, sound... You get it. I understand why it wasn't nominated (its launch basically), but it was clearly a superior game. Sort of the same with others, like Lies of P or Street Fighter VI.

Um you don’t really have to go through a lot of dialogue option to get the bear scene…. It’s like one one option XD I’d relent if it was harder to romance Halsin but it really isn’t the guys easy….

Agreed, depending under what category you put all the branching paths and permutations that affect the world and the story in BG3, they should have won either best narrative or best game direction.
