    I hope this helps someone: I tightened all bolts, and lubricated the piston cylinder (as per part 2 of the video), no luck. But I finally found the source of the squeaking for my chair: The base plate is bolted to the bottom of the chair one one side. The other sideis connected to the piston assembly and held together with a horizontal bolt/rod. Lubricate that bolt, and voila. It's actually surprising that this single bolt carries the entire weight of your body when you're seated. There's also an adjustable stiffness wheel, with a rod that extends out from it. Lubricate the tip of that rod as well.

    Hey from across the pond here in the UK. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and upload this video. I had a very similar problem with my otherwise really comfortable office chair and I followed the same steps you'd shown and it has cured the issue. In my case it was a few loose bolts on the arm rests to the base and the base to the back support needing lubricating as the noise was from a backward/forward movement rather than up/down as with your chair. Kudos to you!

    YOU SAVED MY SANITY, I LOVE YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! the squeaking is still there but it's as you said, its 90% gone and the god damn reason for the extreme squeaking was probably the fact that 1/4 screws connecting the cilinder to the chair was missing, i have no ideea how that happened, i assmbled the chair with my own hands and i am in shock that this happened, anyway, thanks again, i hope you'll read this because you really really really helped a thon, thank you so very very much!!!!!!!!

  • @ruairim2283
    @ruairim2283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Like other comments have mentioned, make sure all the screws are tightened. A few of mine were loose including one that basically wasn't screwed in at all. Tightening then made 90% of the squeaking go away

  • @Taizunx
    @Taizunx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +127

    An FYI for the uploader: The first place you sprayed doesn't make any difference. You're literally just spraying WD all over the outside of the cylinder housing, behind the plastic cover. That doesn't do anything.
    The second place you sprayed is right in the friction-fit of the wheel base and the cylinder housing - that's most likely your culprit. Over time the cylinder can get slightly misaligned in the friction fit. To really solve this you'd need to hammer it out of the wheel base, clear any rust and dirt and then lubricate with a little bit of heavy duty grease in the socket of the wheel base before finally friction-fitting the cylinder once again.

      little late to the party but WD-40 is not a lubricant; it's has some lubricating properties but it's not meant to be one. Lithium grease is fantastic.

    • @VentureForward
      @VentureForward ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@martinnovy4529 WD-40, at least the version used in this video, is a degreaser. Its used mostly to break away at rust and does not lubricate that well, at least not for very long. They sell a version of WD-40 that is a black/yellow can called WD-40 Specialist. This is what the average person would need if lubricating something. Theres even variations of the cans that focus on different things like Electronics or Hinges. Lithium Grease is a great option for these types of chairs though, as you have stated, just a bit messier for the average person.

    Thx so much for taking the time. I agree on W-D- I use it on everything- squeaky door hinges, removing sticky tags from items, removing paint, so many uses. My chair still squeaks but I've identified where it's doing it and it has more to do with where the screws connect (which I sprayed) and my chair looks better than it functions! Taizun's comment below is on point as well.

  • @scentdragon8648
    @scentdragon8648 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks, man! I busted out my WD-40, but I didn't even think to tighten the bolts on the chair again since I just built it a couple of weeks ago. The combination of the two helped get rid of the squeaking for the most part.

  • @ac_junior72
    @ac_junior72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Perfect, thanks! After...I don't know, 1-2 years, I finally got to this. LOL. The squeaking was getting really bad, - no matter how tight the screws were. Any movement in my chair, especially reclining back would be loud. I don't have the exact same chair, but lubricating (WD-40 also) that cylinder sure helped with the squeak - as well as adjusting the seat up and down. Also the back part does disassemble - this is attached to the seat portion with 4 screws and this bent metal "L." where you screw this into the seat. Lubing those screw holes, also the metal "L" part (which is like rubbing metal on metal) totally did the trick. But yet, I will probably have to do this every 3-6 months. Not a big deal, thrilled the annoyance is gone. Thanks for this again.

      You are correct, i just did what you said, put some kroon oil handy oil on the bolts and in the holes on my super squeaky old office chair and it removed all the squeaking.
      Btw for the people that use wd40: dont use it on the shaft of the chair, wd40 breaksdown the seal that is in the cylinder if it breaks it sgonna leak air and your chair wil fall to the ground
      WD-40 gets a chemical reaction with plastics and rubbers

    Great video, helped me detect where I needed to fix. I would just add that WD-40 isn't really a good lubricant and wont last, rather I'd use it to clean up all the gunk than apply a silicone type of lubricant (Blasters Silicone Lubricant). This would be a longer lasting solution compared to WD-40.

    I have the same chair! only the colour is different - and the damn squeaking has been driving me out of my mind! I had only a couple loose bolts - but lubing the cylinder was the fix it needed. Thank you so much for your help.
