I did the extra work to provide understanding and multiple options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing).
All you need is a one dollar pipe nipple of the correct length from the hardware store, and a flat head screwdriver. It literally takes about five minutes to install and complete.
    Example:
    www.homedepot.com/p/Southland-3-8-in-x-3-in-Black-Steel-Nipple-582-030HN/100192847
Or if you already own some existing pipe, you can cut something and make it work at no cost!

Well done on the video. It helped me out when i was about to throw my $100 chair out the window. I like all the options of fittings you provide and you go into detail about further processes. Nice video. 👍

My wifes chair has been collapsing for at least seven or more years now. I had a 1/2" nipple a little too short. So I added a coupler screwed tight and cut to proper length. Fixed in about 30 minutes. This is about one of the easiest solutions to a problem I have seen on TH-cam yet. Just never though of a so simple fix. Thank a Lot

I like how you messed with several options. Most guys would have done it one way and sold it as the only way ... this gives me several ideas. Sweet. Good, direct, narration - thanks for scripting the narration and sticking to it. short and sweet. nicely done. JR

OMG! You BLOODY LIFESAVER!! lol. My good chair (about 5-6 years old) blew out a 2nd time about 9-10 months ago (I actually bought a new gas cylinder the first time) and fortunately my building manager gave me a 2nd hand chair for nothing, so I just threw out the old one. Anyway, 6 months later and the cheap version he gave me developed a faulty cylinder (i'm cursed lol). It's xmas coming up and I didn't want to shell out on a new chair, and this chair is too cheap to bother with a new cylinder, so I've just been putting up with it.
Today it slipped down about 10 times in an hour (more than usual) so I thought I'd TH-cam search a DYI fix. And BAM!! Saw your vid! I fortunately had some left over 2.5cm pipe from a project a while back, used my Bunnings Pipe cutter to cut to the correct length (following your awesome instructions) and WHAMMO! Problem solved! Like you I NEVER use the up/down gas lift anyway (unless it's fixing it when it sinks down) so this is perfect!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, You just made my day! Actually more like YEAR! haha. GOD BLESS DIY HOW-TO VIDS!! haha. Merry Xmas and Happy HYE to you and yours!

I finally picked a lot of things from your video and then implemented in fixing my sinking office chair and it works perfectly well.. now I don't have to buy a new rod.

Conveniently the hydraulic lifts on the GTRacing website were sold out(I wonder why) so I stumbled upon this video and I'm really glad that I did!
This was actually super easy and takes two minutes to do. Head over to lowes and head over to the plumbing section to find the pvc piping. You can find skinny 2' pipes for about 3 bucks and they'll even cut it down to the size you need in store. I also picked up about four half inch 'coupling' pieces. I ended up using 3 coupling pieces instead of the pipe because I forgot to account for the length of the bushings, so the pipe was about a half inch too long and I couldnt use it! Still worked perfectly fine with the coupling pieces and ended up saving myself 30 bucks THANK YOU!!!

Thanks so much for this. Like you, I prefer my chair all the way up. Not only did you save me the cost of a replacement gas cylinder, but while adding the pipe nipple I discovered why my chair was a bit wobbly. One of the washers inside was disintegrating. So that got fixed as well. Thanks again!

i was having an issue where my newly purchased office chair came defective and the metal rod inside the gas cylinder was sliding all the way through the bottom of the chair and touching the floor. I couldn’t find anything on the internet related to my situation but this video actually helped me because once i removed my gas cylinder from the chair i realized that the metal and rubber washer inside were insanely lubricated, which the ones in your video weren’t. So i washed then clean and reinserted and the problem was fixed 🎉 thanks for showing and explained the parts of the chair and their purpose, really helped me figure out what the problem was!

This is perfect! Took me 7 minutes to fix my chair as you suggested including time to find some old pipe in the basement and cut it to size. I also saw other videos about replacing the whole gas cylinder which costs around $23 for a replacement on Amazon. I'll keep that in mind if I decide I miss the chair being adjustable.

Thanks for the great video! My gaming chair has recently started to sink, but only sometimes and only to a height that makes it slightly irritating to sit in. I tried to fix it by putting a hose clamp on the upper part of the cylinder at the desired height, but the clamp either moved under weight or broke when I tried to tighten it.
I never thought about using a pipe inside the cylinder itself. It's a rather ingenious solution to an irritating problem, in my opinion. I removed the lower cylinder as you showed in the video (it was easier than I expected), took some measurements, and went to the garage. I quickly found a pipe of the right width and cut it to the correct length. With just some electrical tape on the thin cylinder to keep it centered, the chair is like new again. I can't lower it, but since the maximum height is perfect for me, it doesn't really matter.
Thanks again for the great video!

Thank you, since my sister ask if I can fix her gaming chair, seems I know now where to look at and fix the issue than disassemble everything.
All I need is the material needed.

I found an old flash light and hollowed it out, and used it to hold my weight on my gaming chair. Thanks for the help man!

Thanks for the video. I'd have to really like my chair to go through all of that. I'm going to give it a shot just because I don't want to toss out a good chair.
I liked the spring idea. That would be the option I would try for my own taste, Thanks for doing the homeowrk.
