Thank you!!! Almost a life saver. My wife's chair was actual scraping the floor. I used HVAC aluminum foil tape instead of the pop can. Works great! Now the question is why they build these chairs to fail.
Tell me please because I do not have the tools or the knowledge to cut aluminum can. How can I use that HVAC aluminum foil tape? how many layers of the HVAC aluminum foil tape did you use? Is it east to cut that HVAC aluminum foil tape?
@@hatemkamal1682 Yes, I put it around the tube. The HVAC aluminum foil tape cuts with a regular scissors. As to how much to use, trial and error. I did a couple of wraps around at first, put the chair back together. It was still too low so I did some more. It was fine then. But a couple of weeks later, it had sunk some, so I took it apart and applied a bit more tape. So far, so good.
This was such a fantastic hack. It was too early in the morning to kill a beer. So I was able to use aluminum foil. I folded one sheet over on itself and wrapped it around the bottom like tape. That got me another half inch, which made all the difference. Again, great hack!
I snagged a chair for free from someone who said the chair didn't roll very well. The cylinder was all the way touching the ground, so that was the only issue. It was a pain to get the legs off the cylinder because it had slid down so far, but finally got it! Good thing I have a rubber mallet.
I did this and also added some spacers to the base where the screws go into the seat and was able to increase the height by a good amount. Such a game changer. Thank you!
Came across your video as I had the same problem. I didn’t have a can handy, got to the same result by applying a couple wraps of foil HVAC tape to the part of the cylinder that inserts into the base. Regular duct tape may have worked too but would probably turn into a sticky mess if you want to disassemble later. The fix allows me to postpone $80 for a new base and cylinder at least for a while. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the tip! My wife's chair is having this issue. Once I test it tip I'll let you know if it worked. Edit: Just did this today. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the awesome tip-
This totally worked! Thanks. I ended up needing to us 3 cans for the thickness to make account for the taper of my gas shock but it fixed the problem! Thanks!
My base wont come off however much i hit it, and its almost 2 finger widths below the base UPDATE: I did eventually manage to remove the base! I didn't have any aluminium so i just wrapped packing tape around and around until it was pretty thick. And it works!! Thanks for your video! 👍
Almost bought a new chair. Good thing I came across this. I used duct tape instead. So far it's working. Might add more duct tape or add a pop can. Thanks for a simple easy to follow video
Thank you so much. I pulled my whole base off + canister and hit the whole shaft off with a hammer projected onto my foot. LOL It hurt a lil, but worth it since my shoulder won't be in pain! Thank you kind sir!
Great fix! Bought glider to replace the wheels. The gliders where few millimeters off which makes the protruding cylinder to stand against the floor. The extra tin solves it.
Duude! Genius. I had no idea these chairs legs included a taper fit to the center post. Game changer. Our $400 worth chair lives again! Thanks for the help.
Hey dude! I've been annoyed with my rather expensive office chair for years now and i just tried this trick. I didn't think i would work but i almost got an extra inch out of it! Thanks a lot!
Great tip. Another option...1/4 or 3/8 inch flat washers where the seat bolts to the frame used as spacers, the bolts are plenty long. Ask me how I know...assembled my new office chair this morning.
Tempted to also use a beer can but found some galvanized sheet metal in the garage cut it 7 x 12 inches and was able to add 4" on my "ergonomic" office chair. Hardest part was getting the steel base off.
I just wanted to remove the Gas lift but this video pointed me to an obscure problem. My chair was lower than it should have been due to the shaft protruding down further. Thanks
Thank you so much for creating your video! Your video seems to be the only one out there to deal with this particular issue. My office chair mid-post was four to five finger width down and it destroyed my chair mat. It took a LOT of wacking to get the post from the wheelbase and I used two layers of cans just to make sure. I have to especially thank you since the height of my chair was causing neck & shoulder problems since I was sitting too low. So I'm hoping your hack will help me from further pain. I'm wondering if older chairs that didn't have plastic wheelbases had this issue?
@@hatemkamal1682 Use a sharp pointed knife to start a hole big enough to get the top of your scissors into the aluminum can. Then start cutting and shape as needed.
Used a magazine as a spacer between the seat and base, gained 1 cm+. two rows of duct tape on the pole and gotten another 5cm. Woot! Thank you Dustin and fellow commenters for ideas. Saved me 150 on a new chair( albeit nice and sturdier one but holidays are brutal on the ubdget!)
Nice! Thanx my dude. My chair doesn't stay up any more, but I don't need the adjustment to work, so I'll do this and won't have to buy a new cylinder! 😎
So i thought the can was used so that the top of the cylinder rested on the protruding edge of the can. But I imagine when the tape you used it was just to give that tapered edge something to grip to so it didn't slide down too far below the leg-stand thing?
@@nickwillis1454 yeap! That and it increases the radius of the tapered bottom of the leg stand, that way the can’t slide lower. In my case the leg stand was very low, almost 2 inches or lower
I need like an extra 2 inches on my chair. I hope this'll work, thanks for sharing! If it don't work, as a temporary solution, my other idea was to just get a bunch of USPS or UPS carboards and stack them under my carpet that my Chair sits on, or to simply buy some cheap but thick-ish carpets that'll be enough to raise my chair by around 2 inches from being under my main carpet where the chair sits lol! Original idea was to get a 2 inch piece of wood but I think that'll feel weird when stepping on unless I sanded all 4 edges down at a nice smooth angle. I shouldn't have gotten rid of my 400 dollar chair, that one actually went up high enough all on it's own smh.
ok for a little help some chairs have a clip at the base that you have to remove to pull the platic part off you just have to lift it with a screwdriver its a little section and you slide it off theres a seperation of the peice and thats where you pry it then slide it
Just bought a brand new chair. It’s a 300 dollar ergonomic chair. Sat in it after building and realized it was too low. Flipped it over and the bottom is protruding like the one you pointed out. Do you think since it’s new it’s not messed up like yours was? Can I still do this trick? Thanks for any advice.
Honey, you just saved my back....I bought a new office chair that was perfect in every way except it's too low at the highest adjustment. I'm looking at it as I watch this and that bit sticks down at least 2 full inches below where the pole meets the 'star' bit....off to buy a can of soda at the corner store....thanx!
