Guthrie Govan presented a superb clinic for Victory Amplification in June 2014. This video contains highlights from his performance, plus interview footage with Guthrie and Martin Kidd, chief designer for Victory Amps. Daniel Steinhardt of TheGigRig also explains how the four amps are connected up for the performance.
During the clinic, Guthrie played four Victory amps: V10 The Baron, V30 The Countess, V50 The Earl and V100.
All the main guitar parts that you hear and see Guthrie playing were recorded live on the night, using one Shure SM57 and one SE R1 ribbon mic. There are no additional drive or distortion pedals, and no messing or fixing of the audio. It's just Guthrie's guitar, played live on the night, over Guthrie's own backing arrangements to his tracks: Sevens, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Waves and Ner Ner. These tracks are from Guthrie's album Erotic Cakes.

More than anything this video reminds me of one very important fact. Whether you are Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King or any other celebrated guitarist. Without the dedication and hard work of the engineers and designers who produce the amplification, effects and instruments, people like Martin Kidd, then there wouldn't be the music we love (regardless of genre or style). Hats off to all the engineers over the years they are the true unsung heroes of rock.
@Pete Cockcroft umm ok
Guthrie Govan should be the next Defense Against The Dark Arts Professor
Damn he's clean
yes, we all know he's taking a shower often
clean? that shit was filthy
***** The same can be said about your playing Sean!
RidvanDuzey aww thats nice of you! :) thanks
jonathansix get out, stupid kid
Super show; great way to get the word out. I sware that Guthrie is so musically expressive that even his West Coast Grooves Jam Trax recording sounds like a record and not a guitar lesson!
This guy carries a new era of guitar playing! along with couple others..
37 people threw their guitar at the monitor and it bounced off the dislike button
+StinkMeat Counts gonna keep goin up boys....they'll drop like flies in accordance
+StinkMeat 38
+StinkMeat Or their Victory amp head...
+StinkMeat That's impossible. Even if someone threw their guitar at their monitor, it wouldn't be able to push the digital dislike button! Kappa
@@FearCycle Just pretend it was some weird shitty resistive touchscreen computer lol M
This is how 50 years of playing guitar looks like! Playing with passion of course. Hats off 👽
Everything about SuperG is Tone and Feel.... a lot of the so called greatest guitarists in the instrumental world need to take a leaf of his book. Every Note GG plays; even the fast shredding runs have feeling whereas the others just sound sterile. Absolutely blown away..... no doubt the best Musically gifted Guitarist out there. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
best guitarist alive
dlees AND HE'S really very FAST !!!
dlees saw him live with his Aristocrat buddies. Left after an hour. Was awesome. Brain went into Overload. Listen to him in short bursts. It is like being allowed to look at the equation of the universe. I am but a mere mortal.
Why? Because he's fast?
@@classicartfoundation639 No. He's got huge chops maybe the best in the scene. What makes him the best is the combination of sheer knowledge, musicality and technicality. He hears the music he wants to play in his head and he instantly transfers it to his instrument without facing any technical or musical barriers. He's as complete as a musician can get on one instrument.
Dead or alive
Amazing guitar player and the amps sounds really good.
Was so excited for this, thank you!
I love how he speaks to the guitar when he plays :)
I think he's mouthing out the tones as he hears them in his head. This is something that jazz musicians are taught and considering how much Guthrie worships guys like Joe Pass, it would make sense that he emulates this technique.
Amazing demo from the legend that is the govan. the only thing missing is his demo of the silverback \m/
To be fair, I do agree that the clean tone from 'Wonderful Slippery Thing' was slightley less wet (rather than dry) compared to the studio version. Still, comparing a live situation with a studio set up may be a bit unfair, cuz it probably is significantly harder to get best of both worlds (tone and the overall balance) in live situation, especially when he is supposed to be switching from 10W to 100W.
I came here to like this video! my goodness
Govan is one of the best guitarist ever !
dios mio, cuanto talento posee este guitarrista, amigo eres un genio de genio
Martin Kidd seems like the nicest man in the world. Damn fine at what he does too.
Guthrie and Martin chilling at a bar. Good times
greatest guitar player
and cool amps
It's nice they took in this homeless guy and gave him some warm coffee. He plays the guitar pretty well, he should look into doing that as a career to get off the streets.
Brasil sempre representando HU3HU3
He looks exactly how I imagine Rincewind the Wizzzard, from Terry Pratchett's discworld novels...
Are there links to the full live performances of the songs he played?
Brilliant!
Freaking brilliant
Is that Mick Taylor from Guitarist Magazine in the corner behind the MacBook? Getting some inspiration Mick? Impossible not to really with Guthrie playing
Pretty intense!
That's one badazz lil stack!!!!
There's only one explanation this guys a fucking Time traveler.
" Im not a fan of shredding ,,but I like this!
here's an example of a Petrucci-killer guitarist
My two favorite guitarists, actually. I like the contrast between them; Guthrie’s fluid, creative, improvised and versatile playing... But Petrucci’s written, melodious, emotive solos are untouchable!
And both are tone kings.
Call me crazy but I think any good player will make any good amp sound awesome!!!
Are these amps designed by former Cornford designers? So I heard... Is this 50W model similar to a MK50? Thanks.
hello funky ppl,i m in search of an amp with a sweet clean voxish type, and a good lead.I know for drive stuff the victory products are just great, but for funky stuff what do you recomand .I m stuck between the v30 and v40 .Usually i play small gigs and weight is of importance.thanx.For the drive sound i m looking for Wampler Brent Mason Hot Wired sound.Thanks.
14:24 That's how you play "Periphery - Have a Blast" solo
3:41 so he does! Listening current! Physical Education!
brazil!
What's the second track he plays? I could be wrong but it doesn't sound like any of the ones listed in the description
It's just an alteration of the solo section in Sevens ;)
3:24 holy smokes!! is THAT possible??
Damn. 🔥
Someone knows which song is around 3:30?
For the song at 2:59, i've never heard that before, is it really on erotic cakes? That lead up to the main riff at 3:53 sounds amazing! What song is this?
Damn i must be losing my memory - isn't that from the bridge from seven?
Indeed, the song is "Sevens" from Guthrie Govan himself.
Sevens!
what kind of strap is he using?
As godlike as Guthrie is, the coolest part of this video was seeing a Japanese-Brazilian dude.
Well, that and, unfortunately, seeing Zakk Wylde being beaten at his own technique _and_ tone simultaneously.
guthrie govan or marty friedman?
If one word can describe this guy it's clean... Jesus, tracking for him must be a breeze
Brazil everywhere lol
What's the song at 03:01?
The producers should have made a separate video without the interruptions.
Agreed, the interruptions detract from the content were all here for
The music is too loud compared to the talk audio
Oh my goodness...there's a run at about 14.15 going in to this epic bend. I think I just wet myself!!
Indeed.
I did on the night. Wicked evening despite it
Damn!
I literally got goosebumps all over my arms... eargasm!!
the tune he uses as intro to his tutorials?
Guthrie wrote Waves in his early twenties. TWENTIES!!
Brian Dennehy when he was 19 actually!
AnilZonderPunt Madness!
Never plays a song the same way twice. Always awesome
That’s right... and let’s be honest, this is one of the best versions of Waves (even tho it’s chopped!)
Just discovered my new #1 favorite guitarist on the planet.. That is all.
Said the same after watching him live, I've seen many more but he pull such a high level performance so effortless it was like as of he was talking, or some other sort of second nature.
What an amazing player, he's so controlled and fluid, when he goes for a shred he manages to keep it musical and still has feel, really amazing to watch
Guthrie is a very simple person, his tone is fantastic, his equipment is simple, and he is a fantastic player!!
The arpeggios are so clean. I wouldn't normally go for this style but this man is amazing on the guitar, I love the dedication to the work. Stunning. Well done.
guthrie is like an oxford professor of english who turned out to be an amazing guitarist, whilst also looking like a viking warrior, a true legend.
Philosophy i think he said he would've studied had he not become a guitarist.
He actually studied English at Oxford but dropped out after a year to focus on music.
@@holliswilliams8426 this
He is unbelievably good and versatile for an Oxford ex-student who never took formal music lessons. I think he has more knowledge of music than most Berklee & GIT "shredders"..
Guthrie's playing is scary, brilliant, breath taking, hyper musical and comical. Seems like a nice guy, too. I much prefer his tone back in the days when he was running with Cornford amps, but his playing sounds great regardless of what gear he uses.
Guthrie's Guitar playing is Mind Blowing. He is the Jimi Hendrix of today. Wow
No
He's the Guthrie Govan of today.
after watching Guthrie for several years, and being a pro player myself, I just wonder what he thinks of the negative criticism. its a shame that people are being killed in the world, and serious stuff is happening, yet we are taking a player like guthrie and slating him for just being Guthrie. he IS what he IS. he is a guitarist of great ability and musicianship, and he wants to create as much music for the people that like him, as long as he can I guess. I'm sure he's had every kind of label thrust onto him good and bad, and I bet it does get to him in some way, nobody hates to be negative, but he's not trying to convince anybody of who he is, you can see he loves playing, and surely that is enough?
I dream at night about wanting to play like Guthrie.
how can anyone dislike this...
People who have been put off playing guitar because of Guthrie's immense skill :L
People are just testing to see if the dislike button is wired up, that's all.
lol it makes me want to create a some new sweeep picking patterns and work on music even more...
8:32 that's a cool run w/o picking.
watts is pretty meaningless when you're miking it. Tone is really all that matters then.
That's so ridiculously insane, it's hard to wrap my brain around how good he is. Secretly trained robot?!?!?😉
He's never sounded better, Tone for days.............
Brilliant stuff again, despite what others seem to think. The ticking Englishman strikes again.
I would say you have my undying love for uploading this, but some of the playing was interrupted in the edit. Therefore, I shall only love you for a long time.
14:22
Guthrie's a lovely down-to-earth guy who on first appearances looks a little like 'Aqualung' until you put a guitar in his hands, then realisation rapidly sets in that appearances are deceptive and he's divinely-inspired. Daniel Steinhardt of 'TheGigRig' has an incredible channel on TH-cam, I've learned so much from him for free over the past week or so in terms of setting-up my amp and pedal-board. It's lovely to see talented, open people come together in situations like this to demonstrate quality musical equipment. Great video, thank you.
"airlines hate musician"
#fact
Dweezil Zappa needs to get Govan on his tour right now. I just have a feeling that if Frank saw this guy, he'd be his new "stunt guitarist" in about a quarter of a second.
That man said it: "...Professorial knowledge of music..."
Yep..I went to this..I am in the left bottom corner of the screen and the one whistling at the end of each tune..Guthrie is just too AMAZING for words..to see him up close was just awesome.. he is funny and a gentleman and just so amazing with the guitar..wow what a night......
Look at it realistically kids. A good amp has a kind of transparency that allows the sound of your guitar and style to transmitted into the airwaves free of any unintended
frequencies or coloration. With this in mind remember that Guthrie will sound like Guthrie and you will sound like you (not Guthrie) The point again, approach this with a clear and realistic sensibility, don'y expect sonic miracles or to sound suddenly like someone else and enjoy hearing you being you..
Scott Matheson - Thanks grandpa...
3:42: Sooooo frigging clean! 😍
Man i get freaking chills when Guthrie plays, good stuff !!
Man I love Waves! Sound has a lot to do with your pickups. I know some will disagree, but good pickups will make your guitar sound way different than stock pickups. A way bigger difference in sound than aftermarket speakers or even an amp. You can get this same sound by using Dimarzio pickups. A PAF Pro in the neck and a Fred in the bridge, preferably in a solid mahogany body. Classic Ibanez JS series setup. This sound is very dry and straight forward just like Joe Satriani. Or just be cool and get the amp, but don't get upset when your guitar sounds different through the amp because of your pickups!
Anyone else hear some of the Steve's in his playing (Morse & Vai)?
Obviously he has his one thing as well.
I think he’s the best amalgamation of great players (he has them all down) and a clear, great personality of his own.
the Problem (or the luck *g) is, guthrie will Sound excellent with nearly every good amp, but as a "normal" Player, one wouldn't Sound like that no matter how good the amp is, because as they say, the tone is in the fingers
This sounds great! I would have liked to hear a bit of rhythm playing though...
Amazing!! Buenisimos sonidos de estos amplis y las manos del maestro increibles como siempre ;)
Holy shit, the sound of those amps is amazing, as good as on the Erotic Cakes album! Guthrie just should be turned louder :D
Its a great tune , but I still prefer the old one.... Suhr guitar and Conford amp..
I´ve seen sooooo many comments about his playing sooo....wow.. what a beatifull guitar :D
some bodys are built for eating, some for lifting heavy objects Gunthries is built to play the guitar
Ugh they all sound fantastic! My two personal favorites are the V10 (the little combo that could) and the V100 (the Steven Wilson tone I absolutely fell in love with). I kind almost wish, for kicks, he played Chapper's Silverback. I just would love to hear how he sounds through one!
We're not worthy, we're not worthy
Name: Guthrie Govan
Profession: Musician, professional guitarist, guitar instructor/teacher & clinician
Education: University of Oxford.. LOL
Where can I watch that whole show with out the interview??
Guthrie's playing sounds amazing as always and as far as tonally sounds wonderful through the Victory amps. Also, when he said "thank you for coming" I thought that would be a great Aristocrats song title.
Great playing, but would someone for God's sake feed that man some food?!?
not your business, mother’s eater.
Yes the amps are good but it's his playing and pedals that did the real work. If he plugged into a peavey it would have sounded just as good. A great player can make any amp sound good!
He's the best guitarist of the world... Amazing *_*
14:22 omg!! those slides are magical
Holy shit, I just teared up ❤
Guthrie Govan is an amazing musician/guitarist. I don't like to compare guitarists as they're all different in their own ways but, if I did, I'd struggle to find anyone that would come close to Guthrie. He's quite incredible, and a lovely guy too.
Can we finally get just the performances with no talking.
Victory amps would like to state all models shown in this video are legal!
*Dem porny riffs* O_O
