I’m going into my junior year in august and it’s never a bad thing to go back to the basics especially after quarantine! You’re videos help out so much!
@@jocelynnsmith1282 For me I learned how to pick up things quickly by look at everything my instructor was doing. When they're teaching spins you want to ask what are my feet doing right now? Where should my right hand versus my left hand be? Where is my flag in relation to my body? And even without your flag those questions will help you learn any kind of choreography. Hope that helps!
@@Brittany_Whitlow Ok! i’m only struggling with one toss but idk what it’s called. they call it a carve toss but when i see other band/tutorials it isn’t anything like it. but i got a single down so that’s good!
i just got started with guard and this helps a lot! for my double i got the rotation down but i cant get it high enough. our guard does the 2nd version of the double and i still cant get it high enough. what can i do?
Glad this video helped you out! Your height is determined by where you right hand is releasing so even if you think you're releasing with an almost straight are you could be releasing before that and not realizing it. I recommend taking a video (in slow mo if you can) and see where your hand is actually opening
Then you are probably missing one of 3 things: either you are not pushing enough with your left hand to give your flag the energy, youre not pushing all the way down to your leg or the time in-between your push into your release is too long so you're not getting the full effect of your push. Experiment with those things and see which one changes your toss
It might seem impossible to toss sometimes but I've taught 4ft tall middle schoolers to toss doubles so it's possible for everyone but it definitely takes practice!! You also need to think about tossing from your back to get extra strength your arms might not have. It just feel like your trying to "pinch a marble in-between your shoulder blades" to utilize muscles from your back and all the way up your arm and make sure you do a full release in one count. Hope that helps!
Little question. Is it possible you to discuss Height? I'm 4'11 and 3/4's and I can't get my flag to do a double or go nearly as high as some of the others even when I extend all the way. Can you help?
Yeah! That's an awesome question, so I've taught kids who are even shorter than you are to toss a double, believe it or not! What I found to be easiest for them is to grab farther down in the flag (towards the top end cap) and sometimes bring in the left hand as well so you have most in the flag in your hands and when you push it shouldn't hit the ground. Hope that helps+
Great information. I like how you really break it down. But you don't do a true double. It should end in the exact place you started from, at the angle. Also I think your starting angle is too steep. The pole should be 45° "ships" shoulder and hips. And your release for the single and a half was to high. You also did a slight prep pump before you tossed. (Pulled the pole closer to your ear) Just my opinion and it could be totally different now that I've been out of guard after 30 years of spinning.
I'm happy you liked the video and I appreciate you trying to give feedback but in this case it was not necessary because I have been teaching guard for 7 years and these videos were meant for my schools but ended up reaching a larger audience. But this is how I teach at my schools plus all the schools within my state and the few states around me do it this way so I am not doing anything "wrong" just different than what you know..

Glad you took the step to get back into guard! It might be hard work to jump back into but I'm glad I was able to help ❤
Thank you for the video, this teaches me a lot. I have just started learning Color guard and this video gives me great information.
That is so sweet of you to say and I'm so glad to hear that!
Trying for broken arrow color guard. a lot of the vets are confident in me so that’s good!

no matter what i do i just cannot get even a 1.5 toss. the flag just does not go high enough even when i have my right hand fully extended.

It is possible to be not strong enough to toss a double because for some reason I just can’t get the height
