Oh my God... I cannot tell you just how grateful I am for this video!!! I'm 47 but with both hands and all my fingers totally stuffed with Arthritis, its impossible for me to roll up and hold a sleeping bag tight to get it in the bag. And I've got three sleeping bags to pack. I did exactly what you said with the first bag and damn! I was pretty proud of myself!!!

Had a problem stuffing my down sleeping bag which I bought in Nepal, try to fold it several times and won't fit through. I remember the seller in Nepal just crumpled it into the compression pack and I found this video, it's indeed just needed to be crumpled to the compression pack! Most useful video ever!!!!

This is brilliant, thank you! It’s coming into the warmer months so I just took my winter sleeping bags out of the swag they are darche 900 rated -12 sleeping bags so are quite thick and very good for the colder months. I just spent way to much time rolling them up and trying to squeeze them into the bag but every time they would get fatter and fatter, I got frustrated and thought there would have to be a better way so I jumped on TH-cam. This is the first video I watched and both bags are back in there keeper bags and stored with in 5 minutes. I will never roll a bag ever again this tip is the best. Thank you for making the video

Thank you Sir. After 4 attemps at rolling my sleeping bag the way it came out of the carry bag, I gave up. There is no way anyone can get that sleeping bag back into the carry bag....the way it came out....UNLESS they have a machine specifically design to roll it with. Thank you very much for this enjoyable and informative video. I'm new to this and just learning so I have a few questions. Why are we sure that stuffing is the best method? In this video we learn that folding can cause lines and tension in the bag. However; 1) to avoid the repeated strain of folding we choose a more irregular stuffing method, but if we always stuff it in the same way, by starting at the feet and working our way round, doesn't this too become rather regular? 2) Folding and squeezing the air out can put pressure on the bag, but doesn't punching the bag and stuffing it in do the same? I don't feel comfortable punching my Rab Down 600 XL right now. If anybody can answer these questions if be really appreciative as I am just starting out :)!
Sleeping bags work by having lofty insulation to trap air and keep you warm. folding and rolling compresses the insulation flat. Stuffing helps the insulation to keep some loft, and ultimately increases the lifespan of your sleeping bag. Even if you stuff from foot end, its impossible to stuff the sleeping bag in exactly the same way everytime, with folds and compressions being in exactly the same spots everytime. Just wouldn't ever happen. Punching and stuffing keeps a certain level of loft, its still compression, but compression in a full 360, instead of sandwich compression which flattens the insulation - in your case down. If you roll and fold your down sleeping bag, you'll reduce the lifespan and efficiency of its insulation. If you have a down sleeping bag it should have come with a storage cell, which is significantly larger and leaves the sleeping big and soft and fluffy between uses. You shouldn't be packing your down sleeping bag as the video demonstrates, between trips when its just sitting in your shed or cupboard. ~ Lauren

good video. how much can I squish a standard dry bag ? struggling to get my kit in my rucksack but if really compacted the dry bag I would have more space to work with.
If your sleeping bag sack is a compression sack you should be 100% ok to squish it as much as you're physically able. If your bag comes with a stuff sack and not a compression one, its generally an indication that it shouldnt be compressed. Just triple check your bags specs to make sure compression wont damage the insulation. ~ Lauren
This is how I have always packed my sleeping bags, but recently I thought that was "the lazy way" of doing it and that there must be more proficient ways to pack your sleeping bag. Turns out I was right all along.
2/3 roll then 1/3 stuff. I remember my first bag was purple on the out side and red on the inside. I guess my parents must have bought it for me and maybe my mum could use it when she wanted. It was the best of comfort.
I was looking for the way to put Mountain Hardwear LAMINA 0°F/-18°C into snugbag. That sleeping bag is really thick and I was not able to put that into snugbag by rolling. Thanks for your youtube video, I was able to make it. :)
Very glad I found this. Rolling the bag up is a freaking nightmare because the material is so slippery it's not even holding it's shape no matter how tightly I roll it. So frustrating
I've had a sleeping bag with a belt around it for many years because i could never roll it up tight enough to get it back in the bag, after watching this i just stuffed it in the original bag easily, i can't believe no one ever told me this. Thank you.
I’d like to watch you try and do that with a Mudgee c3 Colman sleeping bag bet you can’t stuff it in. They are impossible to get in a bag even rolling they won’t go in the bag very well.
Hi DjPepelicious, you're best storing a down bag uncompressed in a breathable bag, this allows for the down to remain lofted and keeps things dry and fresh. Most good down bags will come with a cotton or mesh storage sack that will accommodate the bag is a loosely packed fashion. If your bag does not have one of these then you can use a large pillowcase or similar, then store it in the top of a cupboard or somewhere it won't be too squashed in. ~ Ben

Yeah, good point BigKev. The Rivergum Sleeping Bags come with zippered storage sacks that are not conducive to stuffing. The same principle still applies though, I guess you can mitigate repetitive folding by packing it up slightly differently each time so the folds fall in different spots, or do the zip up part way on the storage bag and stuff it in being careful not to damage the zip. Alternatively, find yourself a stuff sack and use that instead. I'm not sure why some manufacturers use zippered bags, stuff sacks have always been my preference. ~ Ben
It's just the sack that came with the bag and is unlikely it was stamped with a size. Unfortunately we no longer have those sleeping bags either, so I can't go and check for you sorry. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was around 15 litres. ~ Ben
I suggest that you fold about 30 cm of a synthetic bag, from the foot end of the bag, across one of your forearms. Place the stuff sack between your feet. Then push the folded foot end of the bag into the stuff sack so it fits snugly into the bottom. Then stuff the bag into the sack, taking a quarter turn after each push to obtain a constant fill of the sack.Should you want to use the compression straps, to reduce the size, then place one of your knees onto the top of the sack and with your body weight the sack will reduce in size. This allows you to pull on the compression sacks. Do not over tighten these straps. I would also not do up the zips on any of the sleeping bags; it could cause the zip teeth to distort, or break.
Thank you. I just watched the video above and packed my first sleeping bag. I've got another two to go. I'll give your way a shot. Can't guarantee it will be as evenly packed as yours but will Arthritis in my hands and fingers, anything is worth a go.

Some of them are tighter than others, I'd still suggest stuffing over rolling, it's much easier. ~ Ben

Hi DjPepelicious, you're best storing a down bag uncompressed in a breathable bag, this allows for the down to remain lofted and keeps things dry and fresh. Most good down bags will come with a cotton or mesh storage sack that will accommodate the bag is a loosely packed fashion. If your bag does not have one of these then you can use a large pillowcase or similar, then store it in the top of a cupboard or somewhere it won't be too squashed in. ~ Ben

Hey Ben, I have Oz Tent River gum XL's. In another Snowys video it shows how to FOLD them, but what do you think with that particular model ??. BTW, I totally agree with the stuffing method. Cheers.
Yeah, good point BigKev. The Rivergum Sleeping Bags come with zippered storage sacks that are not conducive to stuffing. The same principle still applies though, I guess you can mitigate repetitive folding by packing it up slightly differently each time so the folds fall in different spots, or do the zip up part way on the storage bag and stuff it in being careful not to damage the zip. Alternatively, find yourself a stuff sack and use that instead. I'm not sure why some manufacturers use zippered bags, stuff sacks have always been my preference. ~ Ben

What size of sack did you use for the larger sleeping bag?
It's just the sack that came with the bag and is unlikely it was stamped with a size. Unfortunately we no longer have those sleeping bags either, so I can't go and check for you sorry. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was around 15 litres. ~ Ben

I suggest that you fold about 30 cm of a synthetic bag, from the foot end of the bag, across one of your forearms. Place the stuff sack between your feet. Then push the folded foot end of the bag into the stuff sack so it fits snugly into the bottom. Then stuff the bag into the sack, taking a quarter turn after each push to obtain a constant fill of the sack.Should you want to use the compression straps, to reduce the size, then place one of your knees onto the top of the sack and with your body weight the sack will reduce in size. This allows you to pull on the compression sacks. Do not over tighten these straps.
I would also not do up the zips on any of the sleeping bags; it could cause the zip teeth to distort, or break.
