How to Properly Store a Sleeping Bag (Compressed is The Best Way?)

  • How do you store sleeping bag correctly? It is easy. To properly store your sleeping bag, put it in the storage bag (not the compression bag) that comes with almost every sleeping bag. You could also hang up your sleeping bags. Those are the best ways to store them so they retain the majority of their fluff, which is what will keep you warm. A saggy compressed bag will not perform anywhere near its rating. DO NOT LEAVE THE BAG COMPRESSED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, AND THEN PUT THEM IN YOUR BAG TO GO ON A TRIP! You will think it is the bags fault you are cold, but it would be your fault. Below are my tips!
If you leave it compressed for long periods of time, do this!
    - Take the bag out and lay it flat to puff up for TWO WEEKS prior to your trip.
If you leave it in the storage bag that comes with the sleeping bag, do this!
    - Take the bag out and lay it flat to puff up for TWO DAYS prior to your trip.
If you hang your sleeping bags up, do this!
    - Nothing. Your bag is ready to roll when you are.

I've discovered this channel cause i was worried about my sleeping bag.
The vendor at the store told me that there was no need to uncompressed it for storage, and now it look like a deflatted balloon. its been two years and i used it maybe on five trip since, meaning more or less 4 month compressed between each trip.
This video was great, well explained and give me a lot of hope that i'm not gonna need to buy a new sleeping bag !

This is all excellent information and very helpful. This series began the night after my 6 year old and I camped in our backyard with a low of 9 degrees here in Colorado. We stayed toasty warm that night in our bags! Western Mountaineering and Marmot bags. Maybe a quick video on washing your sleeping bag and even thoughts on liners. Keep up the good work!

Great to hear! I’ll take that up. I’ve never used a Marmot but their other gear I’ve used has been good.

Synthetic breaks down each time it is uncompressed and recompressed. So given you keep it stored and do not add another cycle of uncompressing, means that factors into the longevity of your gear. Glad to hear!
