Crafting an Amethyst D20, then scratching all the edges!

- In this Video I craft a beautiful D20 from amethyst. I use a technique to "frost" the edges of the facets. This scatters light and wonderfully highlights all the facets.
I have wanted to work with a piece of amethyst like this for some time. And it was as much fun as I hoped for.

I have no real interest in dice, but this held my focus the entire time. The way you show off the steps of the process was captivating. And what a beautiful result, too.

As someone who works in the diamond polishing factory - the most amazing part is how you managed to map the die and achieve the rough shape using only simple tools. Great job, the result looks fantastic.

@@GeomancerHT Really the major difference between what he's doing here with the discs in the video was actually quite achievable during "ancient" times. The understanding of mechanical engineering was developed enough that we had the capacity to spin large pottery wheels via foot operated mechanisms. This is the same, except the discs are metal or stone and they used softer rocks. Machining the devices was likely not as accurately done as it is today, but the simple concepts were available to the people of the era, and used.
As a species we never really evolved past liking shiny rocks and I love it. We have people with your skills over here going "I will make the most beautiful shiny rocks" and that's just badass.

That amethyst is the most gorgeous shade of purple I've ever seen. The stars at each corner make for a much more amazing play of light across the surfaces. The frosted numbers are a brilliant choice, the frosted edges make each side look like a pane of glass. I've never seen a Die like this one, you're stunningly skilled at making dice.

God I want a bag full of these expeditiously. Those star-shaped corners are immaculate!
One thing many people don't think about when they see these videos is that this guy is not only a master craftsman when it comes to the intricate detail that is dice making, but this guy is also a master cinematographer as well. Being able to make something that crazy, but capture everything that is done is extremely difficult to pull off.

I always wondered why theres not more true gemstone dice instead of resin. now i see how much work and time it requires. looks beautiful
And also the amount of people that are willing to spend that much money on something like that arent as high.
people generally dont want to roll an item that costs that much because it would become scratched ect over time
because its easier and if you mess up with resin its not going to cost you as much

For the longest time, I've always viewed gemstones as valuable, but of no particular interest. This, I finally see the true beauty of a cut gem. Beautiful work.
Same here. For me at least, the baggage of our past is replaced with the baggage of my hobby. So my meat suit isn't trapped coping with unimaginable emotions most simplified to negative ones to reflect the horrors of our past. But a die, for a game concept, which is where I escape those narratives of hell, and live a tad more freely while exploring more peacefully, in that place I can see the beauty. I'm comfortable enough to allow myself to be open to it.
As a mineralogist, you guys are really missing out on pretty rocks if gems are boring xD, there are some gemstones and crystals out there that will absolutly blow you mind how they look as jewlery!

The frosted edges really add a lot to the overall look! It made me think of the way the frames in a stained glass window actually highlight the color and design of the whole image.

As someone whose birthstone is amethyst and also plays D&D I have never wanted anything more than a set of amethyst dice, this whole video just had me doing grabby hands at my screen, it's just so pretty

I can only guess how many hundreds of hours it has taken you to refine your skill, yet I am sure you would say that perfection is still out there. Such a thing of beauty.
It takes about 10,000 hours to reach this level…. and a lifetime of patience. Also, no caffeine.

i got close in a similar project with only about 700 hours of experience and a machine from the 50s, the difficult part is knowing to facate the sharp bits otherwise they will break in the final polishing process.
More like thousands & perhaps even tens of thousands.
I don’t play board games, I’m not a jeweler, but this, this is what I’ve been looking for. A channel that has so much going for it. You editing is so calming. @@Vernors I worked in Antwerp, made on my first year around 1600 euro net wage. So that is very decent. Worked in it for about 5 years. But doing cutting yourself as main job pays better.

With how crazy D20 dice are getting, I won't be surprised if sooner or later one gets made out of a diamond
ruby or sapphire will come before diamond.
and diamonds are both the hardest natural material and are never all that large
even the largest diamond on record is about a quarter the size of this d20

@CottonyAlmonds I think the point was that ruby and sapphire would be easier to lap into a d20. Because diamond is one of the hardest materials, it would be more difficult to lap that into a faceted dice.

I'm absolutely blown by this. When I finally realized you manage to craft "stars" between the faces my jaw dropped. This is craftmanship at the most perfect levels. Some people are masters at what they do and you Sir are definitely one of them.
A D-20 matters a lot to some people. Some people socialize primarily through games, particularly if they have certain conditions... and a D-20 like that might make it feel like the meaningfulness of their interaction is seen by others, and reciprocated. ❤

You know that the baldurs gate dice is inspired by the dungeons and dragons dices, as is the whole baldurs gate game afterall.
Never use an enhanced dice when gambling with goblins, if you get caught they take your hand(if you're lucky)
It's a d20 from dungeons and dragons. They have been making dice like this since the 80s
Amethyst has always been a favourite stone of mine, and to make such an absolutely stunning D20 is an added bonus. I use resin to make my dice but it’s like a junker against a formula 1 racing car in comparison. You sir are a true artist. Those frosted edges were sublime. Earned an no brainer subscription. Wife and I immediately watched your other videos because they were also gorgeous dice.

I got literal chills at the beauty of the final product. As someone who does amateur rock collecting and has always had an appreciation for lapidary art both the phenomenal color of the gem and the unbelievable art it became is practically mystical to me.

This, in my opinion, is much better than what they put on a ring. I absolutely love the frosted edge touch, nothing make the edge stands out better than using the material of the stone itself, it really pops out and goes well with the polished facets nicely

This looks fantastic. I’ve always wanted a ruby d20 like this. Amethyst looks great like this. The purple color really is striking.
for you i recommend red cubic zirconia, not because they are cheap; but rather because you aren't going to find a natural(or synthetic ruby) with enough body to make a d20(because gems that size are considered to be crown jewels or museum pieces.).
I wonder if there are industrial, synthetic sapphires that are large enough. Maybe one from a very high pressure chemical reactor view port or something?
You'd be surprised how easy it is to get a big boule of synthetic ruby if you really wanted one. they're just super exepnsive. you're right though as a zirconia would work well. just have to be careful not to chip it. I do like the amethyst, or a citrine would be great too. (orange) I could also do a Nd doped YAG. that'd be really pretty as well.

The thing is, the local shop has raw amethysts for sale anywhere between $20 - $2,000 for like a tiny gem to 2/3 of a geode (about 18" in diameter). I don't think any of them were large enough to cut a dice set from though. So I really wonder just how much such a set would cost?
@@tyree9055 You can make synthetic amethysts. You can "grow" them but it's not like planting a seed. It's done in a high pressure autoclave with chemicals. Ruby is actually grown using similar methods for use in lasers.

Idk if the music is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, cause it's what most easily moves me, but you've just shown me why people care about gems and crystals.
That close-up after the first bit of polishing is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Let alone the finished die.
I have no idea how this made it into my feed, but this was so soothing to watch. I love it when hands on capability combined with artistic talent and good old fashioned engineering to make something beautiful. I can just imagine the flow state that must have been enjoyed during the many hours this was made. Well done.
I always thought "Why does something as simple as dice have to cost so much when I can just buy one from a cheap Chinese manufacturer?" Now I understand, this is not just a simple D20, its a work of art, out of precious gem, with so much thought and effort in every step. The result, a stunning gemstone with a story behind it.
Also for hand-made resin dice, you're just looking at ludicrously high material costs (especially if not in the US) as well as a pretty high time investment and a steep learning curve. There's actually a lot of reasons they cost a lot, that become very clear upon trying to do it yourself. Like people may sell resin dice for $100 a set but once you subtract material costs, and factor in how many casts dont come out at good enough quality to sell, they're probably earning less than minimum wage to do so.
@@Magmafrost13 I don't really think you're correct, a litre of resin costs about 20-30 euro and will make a ton of dices. I bought a gorgeous handmade set of resin dice about a month ago for 25 euro.

I've always wanted to work with gemstones but it is super niche job that isn't easy to get in. Edit. I realised that this was the first time I said an audible "wow" to myself, super amazing.
I am just a regular joe, but I can tell this is the first video I have seen in a while that has truly made me feel emotions akin to seeing the aurora borealis. The refining of natural stone with precision is truly an art and you sir have mastered it. Carry on you absolute legend!
Oh my god, as someone who loves both gems and tabletop, I have rarely seen anything this beautiful. This is the most stunning thing I think I've seen in at least the past decade, beautifully done. If I may, considering the color and clarity of the amethyst, I think it would look absolutely amazing with gold leaf inlaid into the numbers to really make them pop out and shine. I hope this gives you something to think about.

As an undergrad in Geology right now, this is absolutely amazing! I love how you also use a ruby too! I think it would be great to make one out of garnet since it develops as a dodecahedron and would be a cool idea to basically keep it in its "original" structure.
