    Wow this video is now 13 years old, but still contains priceless information and a gorgeous opal. I think that color is one of my favorites as well. Love those blue black opals !
    Thank you sir.

    Justin, has by far the best cutting videos I have seen on youtube. And I should know 35 years of experience in the opal industry and the only man still alive that has a Opal mine that is heritage listed in Australia .

      Two great things that have been all but lost in 2021: appreciation for great father figures & apprenticeship.
      Great channel. I'm new to opal cutting and have learned a lot from you, Justin.

    Keep the stone cool!!! That means usining a lot of water, as you are, and back the stone off the wheels every few seconds. My pattern is two swipes and look, two swipes and look. The technique of spinning the the stone very fast looks like a great method also, I am going to give it a try. The key is that the same spot on the stone should only be in contact a few seconds. Also, start with Austrailian opal. Mexican and Ethiopian are both very tricky.

    Yes I am in the throws of doing some webinars online where I can give a chunk of information and then answer questions. What do you think?

  • @blackopaldirect
    @blackopaldirect  13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes the nova wheels are mainly for opal. they will wear out if you use harder gemstones on them and they are expensive. I hope this helps.

    Back when I cut, I used metal diamond wheels, tried the Novas, but went back to metal. Wide as I could get, 2 inch all the way. Mintabie stone is quite a bit harder, maybe on the softer stuff they'd work better. Except for pre-polish; absolutely swear by a nova for that. Off the Nova pre-polish there's no need for destructive tin oxide on felt, just cerium on leather. And what the guy below sais, freezer for removal. PS if you don't use felt, you can use a lower temp wax, less heat stress on the stone.

    I cut a lot of agates and jaspers on a Diamond Pacific Titan with Nova wheels. The problem is that, as sold you go from 220 steel to 600 Nova. This causes the excessive wear on the 600 you mentioned. The solution (a bit pricey) is to ditch the 150? wheel (your trim saw can get closer to the line and damage the stone a lot lee) and get a 320 or 350 steel. 220 to 600 is to large a step. Also, a 12000 endwheel is a LOT better than the 3000 they sell them with now.
