I am a current freshman, in color guard, but i got to start my 8th grade year. I also play 4 instruments, and im in a performing arts academy for my high school. My goal for my senior year is to be drum major, and this is only pushing me further to strive for that. Thank you so much for sharing your story!
Drum Major IS worth it !! I was drum major for my junior year and it’s an amazing experience . Try it ! And if you don’t like it, I’m sure you’ll do great at whatever you choose .
Here’s my little “how I got drum major as a freshman” story! So in 2020 which was my 8th grade year, I had joined marching band as a front ensemble percussionist. Now keep in mind that this was covid year, so the year of experience I had prior to being drum Major was not a full experience as we didn’t do competitions or many football games. However I remember that one day the current drum major (who was a senior) had came up to me and asked me if I was trying out next year for drum major. I looked at him and said “sir I am in 8th grade” and he thought I was a freshman the entire season. Up until that point that drum major had the title of “youngest drum major” when he started his first year as a sophomore. But that all changed when I decided to show up at the drum major clinics we had. The clinics were basically a mini camp on conducting, and all participants were required to pick a piece of their choice to conduct along with the national anthem and our schools alma mater. Originally I had only went to those clinics for the experience, I had absolutely no expectations of getting drum major at that time because it was so rare. It was a few days before tryouts and I was planning on not going through with it until the other drum major had talked me into continuing. So when I went, I was trying out along with 2 seniors and a sophomore. I thought that I had no chance against them because they were all upperclassman. However it was a few weeks later at our Memorial Day parade that the new drum major was announced, and of course it was me! I was completely shocked, I cried a lot, and a lot of people were not happy with our director’s decision. It’s the end of the season now and It seems like everyone has gotten along with me well and a few seniors even wrote me letters telling me how well I am doing! Moral of the story: you can do anything you set your mind to, with enough dedication and hard work, you can reach your goals and maintain success! You never know unless you try :)

Only got it senior year but that was 2020 so we couldn't do much. Our group participated in winter winds so I still got some conducting experience but it still feels like all that time I spent preparing didn't amount to much.
i’m also a euphonium but march baritone and I really want to try out for drum major, but sadly; even though my band is big, there’s never enough euphoniums/low brass. My band director said I would be a perfect fit but I won’t ever get the chance. 😞

Never got the chance to be the conductor for my band because of how small my band was, an alumni would always conduct. Didn't even get to serve and as I wanted because of band drama too. But I'm super glad that someone else had a great band experience!
I had two brothers who became drum major. Did your school do drill-down? One brother won his senior year the other placed the top 10. You can only imagine how proud my family was. I become old enough to join and I was so bad at my instrument my director took my mouthpiece away and said I could only march (he also said “we are not a walking band” to me everyday) and behind closed doors he would constantly remind me the only reason they didn’t kick me out already was because of how much they respected my brother. What got me through this awful experience was reminding myself every day that I would be drum major someday and make my family and the whole band proud. After much sweat and a whole lot of tears I ended up changing my schedule at the end of the season and my director was like “okay bye, hope you don’t come back.” I like your story too

I am happy to say I am officially a drum major. This really inspired me and I just want to let everyone else know that if they really want to be a drum major you can do it. If your willing to put in the work and commitment into the position you will do great. Man is it fun though it’s really a great opportunity and the experiences you will have are absolutely worth it.
I am a freshman and I already had my marching band season but I want to be a drum Major junior year so I can still perform for three years. I was also one of the best freshman marcher mainly because most of the freshman are my friends who are flutes that aren't that good. But I talk to the seniors a lot too mainly my section leader but yah.

Whatever route you take, don't be afraid to make mistakes - unfortunately I had to learn this outside of the music program, but it's a very important lesson I wish I knew earlier. The more mistakes you make, the better you become at problem solving in the future.

It would be cool if freshman could be a drum major, but my high school marching band only lets people that are juniors and seniors who already had 2 or 3 marching band experiences.
At the time, I didn't have a lot of resources through TH-cam so I was taught by the Drum Major and the other techs at my school. You should have more resources online these days on how to conduct, but try to not capture your entire focus with that. What makes a great drum major is there leadership skills and selfless acts for your peers and techs to notice. It'll take some practice, and be ready for mistakes. But you'll have a strong senior year 💪🏽
If you’re a freshman in one of the top contending BOA bands, ya ain’t becoming drum major as a freshman, sophomore if you’re very talented and play it right, most likely junior or senior year. DM is a leadership role, freshmen just don’t have the experience or skill set to perform effectively in that role in every capacity that’s needed. Hello. I know this video was just a year ago. but I wanted to make this comment. I'm a junior at my high school right now. yesterday on Nov. 20 2021 was our last show finals for the season. When I was in the 2nd grade I would dream of being in a marching band for my local High school. it was a BIG dream for me. middle school comes around, 7th grade I was finally going to be in a band but there were 2 problems, I didn't know how to play an instrument (a little bit on a piano) and was never able to sign in to the band. Met this girl who was in all my classes and found out she was trying to be in the band too. we went to our teachers and talked but somehow the band teacher saw both me and my friend and picked her first to be the drummer (which I was trying to be one too) he promised to put me in soon and I waited for the next trimester and then the 3rd trimester until 8th grade and never put me until I went back to the band room and talked to him how much I wanted to be in the class that it was my dream. after all the pleasing he said he would put me in but with the 7th graders since I didn't know how to play anything yet and said I don't mind. I got to band and told me I can play the flute, clarinet, or saxophone. I heard flute was easy from the notes but hard to play it but picked it. it was so easy to learn it and enjoyed it. didn't mind it until I was able to read the music well enough to go to my own grade level and asked if I can be with the rest of the 8th graders and he kept doubting me. at this point, if I pleased him again he wouldn't let me so I stayed with the 7th graders until I left middle school and got to high school. there is something I forgot to mention. 8th graders who were in the band were going to get a visitor from the high school which was the band director. Again I was the 8th grader too but my teacher didn't let me go see the band director. All I found out about it was that he came to talk about marching band which I wanted to enjoy so badly. everyone knew that. The only thing I didn't get to know why the date of where band camp started. Over the summer I missed the days of the band and I was heartbroken. Even now it hurts. freshmen year started and walked into the band room. kids were talking and some getting their instruments out. I went to look to the band director but didn't even know how he looked it so I had to guess. found out there were two directors. one for the brass and the other for the woodwinds. I talked to both of them about how I never got info about the band and that my teacher from middle school never listened to me that I wanted to have a future here for marching band. Both directors were annoyed how I told them about my middle school band because for that they didn't know what to do with me. Now they thought about it and found that they had no tenor saxophones for the saxophone sections. only 2 bari saxes and a lot of altos (there was so much back in 2019) and asked me if I didn't mind changing instruments and said no. for a whole fall season I sat there learning how to read music again but for tenors and I just fell in love with the saxophone more than I loved playing flutes. I was backward like the altos where that kept them from not messing up a lot. I learned faster than how I used to learn with a flute. but sadly never got to be in marching band until my sophomore year but sadly covid hit and everyone was online. still did online marching band but didn't have good wifi. but it didn't really matter because the guy who told us to make an online marching music video left us for another high school marching band. Even my band director got mad for him (funny enough we show him yesterday when I'm writing this and he just ignored us calling him) 2020 sucks for us. but this year I had this senior friend I met in freshmen year. He was the sweetest guy I met and trusted him with everything. He texted me about when the band started and how I have to have paper and whatever I needed to get in (and papers if I get hurts or whatever) I talked to my mom and she didn't like the idea of me going around places because of covid but now she is happy I did it. if it wasn't for him I would be in marching band right now. I worked so hard these 4 years to get this to my marching band and end up meeting this person I will never forget. This year we won 2nd place for the show. I have the full show if you ever want to see it if anyone reads this. I know it's a dumb comment but it changed my life. I someday hope when I had kids to chase their dreams too. but that's it. You were a drum major at cypress bay high cause that is my school and in the thumbnail it looks like our uniform and I am in the symphonic band and jazz band and was in marching but the season ended and I am a freshman.
I auditioned for Drum Major my junior and senior year of High School. I was damn good at spinning, possibly better than the drum major at them time, but my mom was single and couldn't contribute to the Band Boosters, so I was overlooked. Politics suck. Especially considering, at the time, only girls were allowed on ColorGuard, and the only position a guy could get was Drum Major. And a girl got it. No bad will towards her. Just sucked for me :(
is it really difficult to be a drum major? im in 8th grade currently and really interested in it (we didnt really have a marching season, we performed at one football game and thats it) , and i feel kinda dumb for not knowing too much lol, im 1st chair trombone but recently my band directors asked me to switch to tuba because we only had one and i did (i still don't know why they asked me) but its fun so far as ive only been playing for about 2-3 weeks. idk if i have a chance to become a drum major or something. i also don't know if i should be worrying about this stuff because im trying for our honor band and maybe even state honor band, and im in jazz band. i don't really know what to do and id really like some advice from people who have more experience and are older than me 😭😭 idk if i should be worrying about this now or not 😨😨
It sounds like you're already a part of a few programs in your school's band and with honor band it sounds like you don't have much time to do much. Which is fine since some people, like myself, liked to be engulfed with the music programs. Just try to take one step at a time so you don't overwork yourself. Over the years I found that some people say they play eight instruments and are in five different music programs, but aren't good in any of them.... I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but pace yourself to master your craft. And if you really want to be drum major then you should think about doing that as an upperclassmen (Junior or Senior) Because if you love to perform, being a drum major is a different beast. It's about being as selfless as possible and making decisions that people won't like but is better for the entire band. You won't get to march a show, and you don't get to play your favorite instrument. But if you're sure you can handle it, go for it because every band needs one of it's best members to be Drum Major.
Nope! The thumbnail pretty much shows me conducting standing up. I never knew it would be difficult to sustain my entire weight for 7 min. - SUPER painful. I think at the end of one show, a senior carried me to the bleachers 😅

Yo, literally my freshman year, we had like 14 trombones, like a lot.
I haven’t actually tried out, and don’t really want to, my anxiety always gets in my way, except for jazz band.

Hello. I know this video was just a year ago. but I wanted to make this comment. I'm a junior at my high school right now. yesterday on Nov. 20 2021 was our last show finals for the season. When I was in the 2nd grade I would dream of being in a marching band for my local High school. it was a BIG dream for me. middle school comes around, 7th grade I was finally going to be in a band but there were 2 problems, I didn't know how to play an instrument (a little bit on a piano) and was never able to sign in to the band. Met this girl who was in all my classes and found out she was trying to be in the band too. we went to our teachers and talked but somehow the band teacher saw both me and my friend and picked her first to be the drummer (which I was trying to be one too) he promised to put me in soon and I waited for the next trimester and then the 3rd trimester until 8th grade and never put me until I went back to the band room and talked to him how much I wanted to be in the class that it was my dream. after all the pleasing he said he would put me in but with the 7th graders since I didn't know how to play anything yet and said I don't mind. I got to band and told me I can play the flute, clarinet, or saxophone. I heard flute was easy from the notes but hard to play it but picked it. it was so easy to learn it and enjoyed it. didn't mind it until I was able to read the music well enough to go to my own grade level and asked if I can be with the rest of the 8th graders and he kept doubting me. at this point, if I pleased him again he wouldn't let me so I stayed with the 7th graders until I left middle school and got to high school.
there is something I forgot to mention. 8th graders who were in the band were going to get a visitor from the high school which was the band director. Again I was the 8th grader too but my teacher didn't let me go see the band director. All I found out about it was that he came to talk about marching band which I wanted to enjoy so badly. everyone knew that. The only thing I didn't get to know why the date of where band camp started. Over the summer I missed the days of the band and I was heartbroken. Even now it hurts. freshmen year started and walked into the band room. kids were talking and some getting their instruments out. I went to look to the band director but didn't even know how he looked it so I had to guess. found out there were two directors. one for the brass and the other for the woodwinds. I talked to both of them about how I never got info about the band and that my teacher from middle school never listened to me that I wanted to have a future here for marching band. Both directors were annoyed how I told them about my middle school band because for that they didn't know what to do with me. Now they thought about it and found that they had no tenor saxophones for the saxophone sections. only 2 bari saxes and a lot of altos (there was so much back in 2019) and asked me if I didn't mind changing instruments and said no. for a whole fall season I sat there learning how to read music again but for tenors and I just fell in love with the saxophone more than I loved playing flutes. I was backward like the altos where that kept them from not messing up a lot. I learned faster than how I used to learn with a flute. but sadly never got to be in marching band until my sophomore year but sadly covid hit and everyone was online. still did online marching band but didn't have good wifi. but it didn't really matter because the guy who told us to make an online marching music video left us for another high school marching band. Even my band director got mad for him (funny enough we show him yesterday when I'm writing this and he just ignored us calling him) 2020 sucks for us. but this year I had this senior friend I met in freshmen year. He was the sweetest guy I met and trusted him with everything. He texted me about when the band started and how I have to have paper and whatever I needed to get in (and papers if I get hurts or whatever) I talked to my mom and she didn't like the idea of me going around places because of covid but now she is happy I did it. if it wasn't for him I would be in marching band right now. I worked so hard these 4 years to get this to my marching band and end up meeting this person I will never forget.
This year we won 2nd place for the show. I have the full show if you ever want to see it if anyone reads this. I know it's a dumb comment but it changed my life. I someday hope when I had kids to chase their dreams too. but that's it. When the video of the full show is on youtube I'll edit this comment and put it on here. have a nice day
You were a drum major at cypress bay high cause that is my school and in the thumbnail it looks like our uniform and I am in the symphonic band and jazz band and was in marching but the season ended and I am a freshman.

I auditioned for Drum Major my junior and senior year of High School. I was damn good at spinning, possibly better than the drum major at them time, but my mom was single and couldn't contribute to the Band Boosters, so I was overlooked. Politics suck. Especially considering, at the time, only girls were allowed on ColorGuard, and the only position a guy could get was Drum Major. And a girl got it. No bad will towards her. Just sucked for me :(

is it really difficult to be a drum major? im in 8th grade currently and really interested in it (we didnt really have a marching season, we performed at one football game and thats it) , and i feel kinda dumb for not knowing too much lol, im 1st chair trombone but recently my band directors asked me to switch to tuba because we only had one and i did (i still don't know why they asked me) but its fun so far as ive only been playing for about 2-3 weeks. idk if i have a chance to become a drum major or something. i also don't know if i should be worrying about this stuff because im trying for our honor band and maybe even state honor band, and im in jazz band. i don't really know what to do and id really like some advice from people who have more experience and are older than me 😭😭 idk if i should be worrying about this now or not 😨😨
It sounds like you're already a part of a few programs in your school's band and with honor band it sounds like you don't have much time to do much. Which is fine since some people, like myself, liked to be engulfed with the music programs. Just try to take one step at a time so you don't overwork yourself. Over the years I found that some people say they play eight instruments and are in five different music programs, but aren't good in any of them.... I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but pace yourself to master your craft.
And if you really want to be drum major then you should think about doing that as an upperclassmen (Junior or Senior) Because if you love to perform, being a drum major is a different beast. It's about being as selfless as possible and making decisions that people won't like but is better for the entire band. You won't get to march a show, and you don't get to play your favorite instrument. But if you're sure you can handle it, go for it because every band needs one of it's best members to be Drum Major.

Nope! The thumbnail pretty much shows me conducting standing up. I never knew it would be difficult to sustain my entire weight for 7 min. - SUPER painful. I think at the end of one show, a senior carried me to the bleachers 😅
