thank you for this. my band director put out leadership applications, and i signed up to be a section leader, i’m nervous because i have an interview coming up. 😃
I was feeling a lack of guidance in my leadership audition, I really wasn’t sure how to show everything I could offer. This video helped me so much and took a lot of pressure off of my shoulders, furthermore I’m now a Drum Major thanks to your help !
roland ayala That is so awesome! Congratulations! I’m so glad that this video was able to help you crush it in your audition! Please tell your band director about me, I would love to come out to your school and do a seminar one day.
My band director just put up our leadership applications! I'm currently a freshman but I really think I have what it takes to be a part of my leadership team. My interview is a month away, but I wanted to prepare for it earlier so I can practice my responses beforehand. Thank you so much for this video!! I now have a grasp of what to say in my interview and I cannot wait!!
@@BandLeadership OH MY GOSH! I made it into the drum major position as a sophomore!!! I just recently got the news😭thank you so so SO much, this video literally helped me a ton!
@@Nivek222 CONGRATULATIONS!!! I’m so excited and happy for you! Please share my videos with your fellow leaders and your band director, so the message of servant leadership will be spread. Who knows, maybe your band will bring me out to work with you and your band. Congratulations again, I wish you all the best. Now go out there and lead with a servants heart and a set a great example for your band mates!
I auditioned and ran last year. I pushed myself hard to complete all the paperwork and somehow I was able to do everything by the deadline well many other people happened to turn in the applications late. I didn’t get anything, as I’m still a regular member in the same instrument I was last year but one thing the whole process gave me was hope and zeal. Zeal to do better next time and try all year. I don’t see it as a waste of time, everything happens for a reason and my failures gave me encouragement to practice and more knowledge on what it is to be a leader and and a marcher. I was able to get the black lens off that made me feel that people hated me and I wasn’t going anywhere off and realize that people do see stuff in me and that I can have a good influence on people and I failed to realize because I was in my head and too focused on myself. Now I push all the voices saying that I’m a wannabe poser away and keep working to better myself and help others the best I can. I can do this and next year I know that I’ll be ready. All three of our percussion leaders are to graduate next year and rookies and younger veterans are going to need someone to help them and lead them to the right direction. Edit: I ran for leadership again, but I got suspended so I lost it which sucks because it was my last chance to get high school leadership and I had never gotten suspended or discipline in high school before but one day I woke up on the wrong side of the bed and a petty teacher upset me so I stood up to her. I didn’t hurt anyone or damage any school property but it’s crazy that that one event ruined what I had built for myself over the years being a great person, pushing myself, getting great grades, never giving up, and going above and beyond but I can still be a leader without a title and that event made me realize how I need to work on taking care of myself or bad things could happen. It’s sad that I never got recognized for my efforts in band and almost never got recognized for my effort outside of either because I tried so hard and I came back empty-handed didn’t get any awards in band apart from a medal for a competition and it sometimes makes me want to stop trying. However, I have to remind myself that I don’t do this for the title or for the power or for the liking of other people and I do this just so I could be a genuinely good person and make the world a better place and that one day I will get my karma even if nobody on earth notices what I do. The garbage people take the trash out every day, but barely anybody thanks them for it. The trash people don’t come, however everybody notices. Sometimes people don’t get recognized because everyone takes them for granted, but if that person stops doing what they did, the world would notice and care. I know that doing my best and going above and beyond helps others and myself and that every good leader and successful person started out as someone that nobody really noticed or cared about. If I stop trying, people would definitely notice and start saying and doing stuff about it which means that I’m making a difference even if people only notice when I do bad things they’re still noticing a change which in turn is recognition. I have no more leadership chances in high school, but I can still run again in college. I’m already in a position of leadership as the only one who plays my instrument and soon to be senior in high school.
I’m currently a freshman going to be a sophomore in marching season. Try outs are in may and the other person will be a senior this marching season. I’m a bit worried because she’s older but I do so much with band and have a type of personality I think is very favorable to be a drum major ! Wish me luck in may even though it’s so many months from now!
Good luck and best wishes, Elizabeth! Give it your best YOU, and everything will work out exactly the way it's supposed to. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn. Sometimes what you learn helps you to win bigger in the long run. Be patient, play long-game, and remember that real leaders don't need a title to have a positive influence and impact on their peers. Lead from wherever you are, your peers and your band director need your positive example. Please circle back and let us know how it turns out.
Coming back to this vid for help with my interview Monday! Auditioning for drum major with a new director and I cannot wait ❤ will def tell how it goes!
Update: I didn’t get in since only 2 slots were available and a returning drum major essentially had a guaranteed spot, however, I still have time until the end of HS! This video still helped me out a lot, thank you!
@@angelstios so sorry to hear that you didn’t get the position this time, but you’re right, there’s time left and you can prepare yourself for next year. If there are any specific topics that I can address in my videos, that would help you better prepare, please let me know, and I’ll create it for you. Best wishes, and good luck! Remember, you’re still a leader. It takes a lot more skill to lead your peers when you don’t have a title, but that demonstrates your true leader, ship ability. Go forth and lead! Your band Director will be paying attention.
Thank you for these videos! Our high school is having drum major auditions in April and I want to try out. But there is a small issue: the current head drum major is a junior and so am I and she has already conducted for a year, but I feel like her tempo is off and there are things I would do differently in the position of a leader to keep the band motivated and actually teach them something. There is also the issue with me never having had the opportunity to show leadership and he is likely to stick with her because she already has experience. Do you know if there are ways I can be a leader without seeming bossy while I'm not in the position of the leader? Sometimes people can take helpful criticism as an attack when you aren't an actual leader like drum major or on band council and also they won't want to believe your advice because you haven't been put I that position by the band director.
Daphne, thank you for your question. Stay tuned as I will make this the focus of my next video. Subrscribe to this channel if you haven't yet, and be sure to like my Facebook.com/bandleadership page so you'll be notified when I go live. Thanks again for reaching out and asking your question. Best wishe to you, DO try out for drum major, and "do you." I'll address the leadership approach in the video. You can do this, and if you don't get it this time around, you'll learn a great deal just by preparing and auditioning. Be sure to ask, after your audition: "what do I do well, what can I improve upon.?" That will let you know where you stand and what you need to work on, especially if you do make drum major." - Duane
