I found that wire ties tend to pinch the fuse and keeps it from lighting and I have had a couple of them fall into the tube of a unfired tube and block the launch and blowing up in the tube. I used wire ties for 4 years and always had failed fireworks. I switched to the tough tape masonry 2 years ago and have had no failures since and took half the time to fuse 500 mortars
That's nice. But when you did your fuse junction from the center run you grouped all of the ends together in one direction rather than having the cut ends face the direction of fire.
Scott Suhre - one reason why he taped it was so the center fuse stay in place and keeps burning next to the other two he splits off to. So the center fuse will keep burning and the other is tide in and tape right next to it so it will catch from the center one. As long as you have more then a inch tape together is should light.

Yeah. I don't like the idea of having anything over the top of the tubes when I set stuff up. I mean, theoretically it should burn & fall out of the way but I'd rather go along side instead just to be safe.

Agreed, not to mention all of that plastic waste, either burning or falling to the ground. No point, either, when good old paper masking tape works just as well and burns up.
Yep, my thought exactly also! The wedgie deal you described, the mess of expensive zip ties and the ease of the masking tape. Plus... I make a quick match fuse with masking tape and it burns very, very fast because it traps the fire and it accelerates inside the tube of tape. It looked to me that his length of fusing should have made about 1 minute and 20 seconds of showtime but his rack was done in just at 1 minute. I believe the fuse sped up due to the tape running the entire length of fuse.
I'd like to mention to everyone, if you want to toss aside your brand packaged fiberglass tubes I am more than happy to accept them and use them to make home made racks. Don't throw them away

I think the only thing I would change would be to use that really wide Masking tape to cover the entire tube to prevent a burning ember fall into an adjoining tube. @PyroCreations - Question - why don't you fill the first tube in the outside segments?
Interesting that at the end of the first row you tie the fuse together but not back to front as seen by the advancing flame as you did all the way across the rack. Is there a reason for this please?
Question - Why is the launching so inconsistent? 3 or 4 shells would come out almost simultaneously, then 2 or 3 would be seconds apart. Is there a way to correct this? Damn pop ups! Blocking what I want to see!
At the end of the initial row, the fuses should be reversed so that the burn leads into the second fuses, wasn't wired that way. Masking tape over the center fuses is fine, but you didn't cover any of the primary fuses, the 'coals' can go into the tubes and light those fuses just as easy. It sounds like there was some fuse jumping there.
Uhaul brown tape is faster for setup and keeps the fuses pushed together during the entire overlap. Also the overlap burn depends on your fastest fuse. Mortar fuse is normal 5 second fuse (.5 seconds per inch) vs green perfect fuse at 15 seconds (1.25 seconds per inch). This setup will cut your time .75 seconds for every mortar assuming you use a consistent 1” overlap to the main fuse. Based on that you may want to move it to a slower main fuse to ensure your timing is correct.
I think the tape would cause timing inconsistencies. Sometimes working almost like quickmatch and speeding up the fuse, maybe other times coming off as shells fired and returning the fuse to normal speed.
Did that go off like you planned? I didn't see a single row of one at a time at the start??? Then same pace but 2 at a time. Then 2 at a time but faster paced. What went wrong?
I'm about to use this method for my first fused show this year, but I have a question. Doesn't this present some potential obstruction for the shells leaving the tubes? I understand the fuse itself may burn up completely, but the zip ties may fall into the tubes and possible create an issue?
We do a small piece of duct tape and two zip ties over the top of that for are fireworks displays. We had 112 cakes, 140 mortars, and 48 Rockets. Only one cake and one rocket didn't go off.
Notes: 1. You put your head and torso over loaded guns. BAD form mate. 2. NEVER, connect your ematch terminal before you have placed it on your match (or fuse whatever your want to call it). I realized later that this was just a nichrome wire (NICE shroud on it). But still treat this as an ematch brother. Static CAN set them off and it is "safe" when the wires are shorted. Also from a professional point of view, keep your leads split out and only allow a short amount of copper to extend out past the terminal (I like to loop them to give extra contact possibility). Once I moved to this it was easy to mandate to my crew "No wire plastic should get closer than 3mm to the terminal, and no copper should extend more than 3mm from the terminal". Every show has been 100% (except the rare bad ematch. Most of my 4th of July shows range from 380-400 cues. Whats everyone's thoughts on drilling a hole at the base of the tube and running your fuse through it, like a cake is fused???Could give you more accurate timing I feel. Haven't seen anyone do it, but its how the single shot tubes are fused, along with everything else I suppose
@Nuna Beeznezt ive actually made several in the past. Sometimes itll take a couple lit ones before they simultaneously all light off. So many contained sparks in the bucket and they just self ignite. Using zip ties is not a smart thing to do. 1) they can smolder long after the rack is spent, causing secondary unintentional ignitions of other pyrotechnics or grass etc. 2) study the basics of how a fuse works. I doing so you will find that using Uhaul packaging tape is the best route. Not only is it sticky as hell but fuse that is shrouded creates more heat ensuring the next fuse will light.
Do you clean the carbon buildup in each tube after a few firings or do you clean them every time thy're used?? Would the mortar tube's I get with the excalibers Mortar pack work well enough? They do have really thick bases on the tubes and the upper part is also much thicker then fiberglass tubes I've seen, and I have reused them as single shots many times. I just need to clean the carbon buildup so the shells/canisters go all the way to the bottom of the tube. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks from a fellow Pyro. ;)
We clean our mortar tubes to remove paper debris in the tube. Not for Carbon buildup. Motars need to fit solidly on the bottom of the tube or your going to get a "low lift" and an explosion close to you. I am a licensed pro and have never cleaned a tube for "carbon buildup".

Would have been nice to watch the show at the end, but with the "end video thumbnail" feature was enabled by the creator, and all I saw was a thumbnail about a guy wanting to try a Can Cannon, whatever.
OH Great I learned how to launch mortars on TH-cam
Whats next? How to Skydive?
nah, muff diving is more fun, done both
was the cameraman chewing on the mic?
Extreme Shells!?
I did a 100 rack this year of excaliburs all 100 on fast fuse it was awesome
Cool. Post The Video So all of us Pyro Enthusiast can enjoy.
I would suggest using tin foil around the top of the guns and fuse instead of the tape so nothing prematurely ignight's.
What happened to the last 10 coin up simultaneously with the pink fuse??
ShaolinTemple noticed that. Not sure. Somehow they prematurely ignited.
Probably could use the super fast fuse on the outer ones and get them to light simultaneously -
you have a fan rack with no fan effect I would have fused them a crossed the rack to fill the sky up and get the fan effect
That is a crap rack it will blow apart if you have a failure
@@johncosgrove2738 Appreciate you taking the time educate!
Do you have problems if the zip ties fall in the tube?
Don't use zip ties. Too many ways for things to fail. Use foil tape.
a constant burn time on the fuse sure doesnt translate to your launch rate...
Yep, my thought exactly! I make a quick match fuse with masking tape and it burns very, very fast because it traps the fire and it accelerates inside the tube of tape. It looked to me that his length of fusing should have made about 1 minute and 20 seconds of showtime but his rack was done in just at 1 minute. I believe the fuse sped up with due to the tape.
Who says this is the proper way to fuse mortars together. The guy making the video. You can fuse however the hell you want.
Yes james you can fuse it any way you jolly well please. This is a instructional video for those who might find it informative. Feel free to fuse your rack how you like and totally skip my free informative video. it is America! God bless
He spanked you!!! He did say a few times this is how he does it. Pay attention
@@pyrocreations1 how long do you think would all 50 mortars take to shoot off if I fused them where they only shot off one mortar at a time?
masking tape works better less time, less clean up..
10seconds also sir
I put 2 Talons in parallel on my racks.
I use the regular electric match I never use igniters they are total failures and ugly as hell plus I never use zip ties I use brown packing tape just like dave displayfireworks 1 uses in his videos!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those talons suck. Had a bad show last year because of faulty talons. Igniters all the way now.

You can fuse it like that but it simply isnt the proper way.
I want to live in a state where FREEDOM RINGS! F Ca
The neverending messing with the microphone 😖
Nice video
50 shot rack far out!
That wasn't bad at all .
That rack is trash I can't believe you'd say it's a good solid rack. Hope you never experience a cato in it. You'll regret not buying a real rack.
Fact half of the instructions are poor also.
Does anyone have experience with pvc barrels?
NEVER-NEVER-NEVER USE PVC!
PVC plastic pipe is too rigid and can explode/shatter with the launch charge sending plastic shrapnel into the audience and perhaps have a low to the ground effect detonation.
Chuck Fyock Okay that’s what I needed to know. I will just stay with the paper barrels that come with the shells. I appreciate the rapid response!
Chuck Fyock I’m also thinking that thin wall metal fence pipe might work if the dimensions meet the shot size without any restrictions or binding. There was one example that uses fiberglass tubing that worked well.

I'd only use products designed for the specific firework I'm using. Cardboard tubes are only designed for short term use but they're ok to use over again as long as they aren't showing signs of wear.
Fiber or HDPE tubes are the way to go if you're wanting to build your own long term mortar racks.
Btw, I'm on a pro pyro crew...stay safe my friend!
Don't want to commemorate the 4th with a trip to the hospital.
Chuck Fyock I have tried to use my old tubes but I’ve noticed deformation and swelling. ( left outside was overnight). I want to put together a better rack setup that for repeatability. Thank you for your input. I load bombs on B52’s and our bombs are much safer to play with than mortar shots🙂
