My thoughts on Kino’s Deluxe Edition Blu-ray for the 1920 Paramount silent version of Jekyll and Hyde with John Barrymore’s amazing performance in the dual role. Interestingly this forms the story basis of both the 1931 and 1941 versions and is the closest to the original novella of the three.

I actually bought this and the Blu ray of the '32 version around Halloween. Both were upgrades for me, and I was happy to retire the DVD editions I owned.

Great review with in-depth thoughts. I'll have to pick this up. Recent horror genre picks for me is the Arrow boxset Gothic Fantaszico Four Italian Tales of Horror. Possibly the best physical media release of the year for me. Vinegar Syndromes release in 4k Ultra HD of The Werewolf vs. Vampire Woman. Blind buy watching it tonight.

    Incredible review!
As i comented in the video of the 1931 film, this 1920 version is my favorite. Reflecting about more modern adapatations of the book, the Alan Moore's League of Extraordinay Gentleman comic book is another great exemple of how to work with the carachter, sadly the movie version with the great Sean Connery is prety bad.

No, it won't be. Screw them. Only 1931 is the real one period

Funny, I wasn't aware but I guess I should have expected some video releases of this movie would be missing footage (it bugged the hell out of me trying to find a complete DVD of the 1934 Scarlet Pimpernel). My Kino DVD of this film dated 2001 has a runtime of 1:17:38, would this be missing any footage?

Unfortunately yes, that is the version missing footage: www.silentera.com/video/drJekyllAndMrHyde1920-1HV.html

Strange, the gap is much smaller (about a minute) when I look at the timeline in VLC Player. Maybe the Kino DVD is slower?

Interestingly, Kino is (I'm assuming unwittingly) still perpetuating the myth that later MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer had any connection whatsoever with that inferior rival version of JEKYLL that was released concurrently with the Barrymore in 1920. That film was actually produced by a totally unrelated and obscure gentleman named Louis Meyer. It's another one of those unchallenged little factoids that was probably cited erroneously in some film book 50 years ago and perpetually quoted ever since...

No. A film shouldn't be a copy of the book, it should stand on it's own and I find the changes in the 1931 just perfect for it. A silent film is not a complete film yet, it is a skeleton of a film, so obviously that version can't be the best one, the 40s version is empty imitation of 1931 version - which is just perfect and shouldn't have been remade ever💁‍♂️
