Seastrom had a unique brand of sensitivity and artistry that meshed perfectly with the pathos, tragedy, and power of Chaney's heartbreaking performance. It's a story about humiliation, self-loathing, betrayal, and vengeance. Please give us He on bluray.
I'm a huge Chaney fan but I never got around to this one. I do find it funny when people complain "it's too melodramatic" and then claim to be Chaney fans. The majority of Chaney's big films are extremely melodramatic. That's part of why I enjoy them tbh.
Grabbed this once it was announced. I would love to see all extant Chaney films restored some day. Great overview here. No matter the role, Chaney is still mesmerizing to watch after all these decades.
I just picked this up and watched and I actually liked this movie. For a 1922 film that is presented in this quality is amazing! I'm Really finding the love in silent movies this year. Great review!
I think this "restoration" could've been done a lot better. Scratch lines should all be painted out and that grain...don't get me started. That's just the limitations of the technology of the time. This is the 21st century, we can do better. Get that grain out of here. Upscale all of the film elements using the latest AI technology. No more of these B&W films and dyes and such, again limitations of the time. Get the best colorists in here and get to work. I want this looking as colorful as the latest Avatar film. Let's get an actual musical score for this film. In fact, let's get some actors to dub an actual language track. People want to hear these movies, not just watch them. What is this a book? I have to read what's going on? Again, limitations of the time. If it was shot today, there'd be sound so we'll give them sound. Atmos mix, the whole deal. As for the missing frames, perhaps AI and CGI can fill in...ACK!!.....ARGGGHHHHHH!.................. He's gone...oh thank God, he's gone. Cameron is gone......for now. *stares ominously into the camera*
