Here are my thoughts on MGM's 1941 remake of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the beautiful new scan Warner Archive has released on Blu-ray. It is easily one of their best releases this year and the finest video release of the film to date. While MGM's remake of the 1931 Paramount version remains in the shadow of its predecessor there are many great and interesting qualities that still make it worth watching. Key amongst these are Victor Fleming's direction, the full MGM studio gloss and the lead performances of Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman.

Spencer, Tracy and Fredric march worked together in the 1960 movie inherit the wind

The only scene from this film I remember--saw it just once, many years ago--was the dream sequence where Tracy is whipping Turner and Bergman as horses...that scene comes as close to the 1931 version as anything else in the film.

I'm honestly shocked the filmmakers got away with that scene! it's so blatantly sadomasochistic and sexual.

It's the most striking thing in the film along with Bergman's head being the cork pulled out of an exploding bottle. The German footage I mentioned has some more bits of the dream sequences. They still had major issues with the censors over what we see in the release version.

I actually just got done watching this movie yesterday and I gotta say this Dr Jekyll & Hyde movie was really good. obviously not better then the 30’s film but Tracy performance was a standout for me was amazing. his Hyde was really different yet still met true to the original I loved how he played it off in my opinion.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of the make-up trailer when Tracy and March were shooting INHERIT THE WIND for Stanley Kramer in 1960. Did they compare notes on their Hyde interpretations? One can only speculate, unfortunately...

Oh good grief that would've been an amazing thing to witness. The only thing I've seen was that March sent Tracy a joking telegram when the 41 version notices weren't too good about "thanks for the greatest boost to my career".

That's it. You've done it. I just ordered the disc. I'm excited to revisit this version, flaws and all. It probably helps that I just revisited A Game of Death, another 40s remake of a pre-code classic, the other day and was surprised by how my opinion became much more favorable once I got over the indignation of a classic being "neutered" by the Code, as it were. It wasn't as good as the original, but it has its own strengths and even made a few bold choices to differentiate itself from the older one... so I'm hoping to have a similar new appreciation for the '41 Jekyll and Hyde.
Shame there isn't a commentary though.

Haha, it's well worth it for the new scan alone. I've been meaning to pick up A GAME OF DEATH which definitely has parallels to this film.
I wish there was a commentary because someone could go to town on this film.

Respectfully disagree. The Tracy version is more grounded in reality and by doing so, actually succeeds in being scary as opposed to the 1931 version which I found cartoonish. The performances from Tracy and Bergman are more nuanced and powerful IMO. It's all subjective. Glad to see fans of classic horror chiming in here.

I much prefer the 1941 version. Tracy is always great but Ingrid Bergman is fantastic in it! The 1931 Hyde was far too Simian and would never have been accepted as anywhere near normal in Society.

Very intensive insight. But, I disagree. For me the 1931 versión was the definitive, until I re- watched this bluray edition. I now consider the 1941 version as the Best now. I saw many times both versiones along years, and the 1941 versión was the first I saw and liked very much. Later, saw 31' versión and fell in love with it. But, with years of several watched, made me reflect about their great differences. 1931 versión is a film of extremes (war with fiancee' father and be horny constantly, notably proud, cynic and hypocrite), as drama of comparison. The 1941 versión is more faithful to Stevenson and credible (Jekyll is not a monster, passionate about science, not a philantropist (but somebody good that helps)). As much admire the Mamoulian camera resources and compositions I admite that these were some unnatural in 1941. I guess this is the reason for the Fleming classic narrative (but marvelous and unusual use of close up along the film) and psychological proposal. I think this was the better election. I miss the mirror scene, missing from u.s. negative (cut for unknown reason) that add much more content to the tragedy.

@@vidimur1977 I can definitely see your point and would agree the 1941 version hits somewhere between the extremes of the 1931 film and the more traditional 1920 silent film. Where the 1941 version excels most is in the psychological depiction of the character’s disintegration and the more grounded internalized nature of the lead performance.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusaderYou're right. There are several traces of his desire that Hyde surfaces. Already at the begining, Jekyll see himself as Hyde in Sam Higgins' negative behavior in the church. Same case in the allucinations montage, he wipe to his two desired women with Jekyll's image instead Hyde (edited too). And for example, certain lines as "I am Jekyll", from 31 version (changed) fit much better in 41 version as "You saw at him, some bit of me, Hyde?, precisely because Hyde is human not beast. As Jekyll feels himself some boring with all but as Hyde alive.
