Very interesting departure sequence, runway change + deviations to manage to avoid weather. Very good professionalism from the pilots! Thank you for posting!
The Pilot looks very efficient, commitment, and professional. They are all collaborating, and co-operating with each other. They make a good team. He is obviously the most experienced.
I've working as a cabin crew for almost a decade so far and one thing i really love is that always expect the unexpected, I thought It'd be a regular take off but suddently too much tail wind, love aviation!
I think the biggest problem is that the a340-300 is hopelessly underpowered, not just the weight itself. But very cool to see how the pilots reposition the aircraft for the new runway:)
Fantastic video footage and images. I felt like I was in the cockpit. Respect to the pilots for their hard work and excellent explanations. Really enjoyed this viewing experience. Thanks a lot for sharing, great work! ❤
Excellent video love these pilots, there very polite and professional at for the same time, It was amazing to me how calm and professional they were even when they had to recalculate for runway 16 would fly with them anytime God Bless them.
why do you care about a slow climb on a 10 hour flight with full pax and fuel on a 270tons jet? It doesnt fly slower than other airliners, it takes same time to reach destination which is all that matters.
@@kimiraikkonen4226he has the right to notice a difference in climb speed compared to other planes , who are you to claim that something is more important than any other thing or subject?
@kimiraikkonen4226 Having a high climb rate is beneficial in many ways: obstacle and terrain avoidance, traffic avoidance, outclimbing a windshear, reaching higher altitudes faster(both for safety and better performance) and, most important, better engine out performance. When it comes to flying, it's better to have excess power and not need it than the other way around
Excellant video. You pilots are so good at what you do. I would certainly feel safe flying with you guys at the controls. Thankyou, thoroughly enjoyed this. I am watching from the United kingdom.😍
Nice night fFlight to buenos aires. I like the Edelweiss Air. I fly mysself Edelweiss A320 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Amazing Crew and nice A340-300
Just wish the aircraft was a Boeing. I am a big Boeing fan. But I have an intense interest in commercial flying. I have the greatest respect for airline pilots, especially the captain. These guys are amazing.
Very interesting vid. I have never seen a case where the aircraft had to change runway ends at the last moment. I wonder why they didn't just take off from runway 16, right from the beginning. I mean, they knew that they were right at the limit of their takeoff abilities, given the tail wind on the runway 34 side. They had to know that the wind could change by a small amount at any moment...which it ultimately did. And that forced them to have to switch ends. If the tolerance was THAT tight...why not just take off with the head wind on runway 16, and avoid any possibility of what happened? They were closer to the 16 end of the runway before they began taxiing, as well.
Probably because of the high terrain south of the airport. In case of an engine failure at MTOW, they may not be able to comply with their engine out climb gradient, which would explain why they preferred to depart from RWY 34. LSZH will operate runways with tailwinds up to 7 knots as per standard. You can check that in the AIP or on the departure and arrival charts.
Noise abatment restrictions during the night. If you takeoff on 16 will overfly almost directly over the city. So isnt "recommend" to depart from that rwy
@@arheillocuh6319 Agreed, but NADP are not compulsory and it can be decided to 'ignore' them due to performance reasons (as they did in the end). In the end, what's the point of NADP if you can't take off anyway, right?
I just ❤ A340! Wish there was a good one for msfs. 01:26:55 - f-plan on mcdu display waypoints with more than 5 single letter names. I always thought it was icao standard for naming waypoints with 5 letter names (except vor and ndb)
Usually, when you direct to a waypoint, all intermediate waypoints are deleted. However, this happens when the crew chooses to direct to a waypoint while using the "abeam points" option (DIRECT TO/ABEAM PTS). The FMS again draws a direct line to the waypoint you want to directly fly to, however, reprojects all intermediate waypoints onto this new, direct line. To have a distinction between the original waypoints and the reprojected ones, their names are prefaced with "AB" (for "abeam"), adding two letters to the otherwise standard five-letter names. Hope this helps! :)
On long flights like this one, the thlrd pilot is there to have a rotation. One pilot can rest/sleep in the crew bunk below, while the other 2 are in the cockpit.
bet they didnt exactly love having to taxi all the way back to the opposite RWY and the missing their CTOT with only 14min of extra fuel and closing in on the LSZH night curfew...as a flight operations officer myself im pretty sure there was some hussle in the edelweiß OCC at that time
Wow what a slow climb. It’s amazing that this can climb so high being underpowered. Very interesting to see these professional pilots always manage the issues around this aircraft being underpowered. Maybe TOGA for takeoff would have been better?
@@DJW411 you absolutely right, I don't understand why they didn't use toga. Is it a miss call from the captain? I don't think so, because the first office doesn't look like is worried about that.
Is it when you are you lined-up that you do the take-off performance calculations? Why weren't these calculations done before lining up, so that they go directly to RWY 16 and not hold up the RWY?
they did them before but with a slightly lower tailwind component, now when the actual tailwind increased it pushed them slightly over the limit. During night operations runway 16 is highly nonstandard due to noise regulations, so they try to use 32/34 as long as possible and only if realle not possible switch to 16
Question: Tail winds are good for you if I am not wrong as they give a "Boost" at least in cruise. So why did they opt to reject to takeoff from the original runway (with 8kt tailwind) in favour of a headwind on the other?
To add one thing: In the cruise the tailwinds are better because you are already crusing with a higher speed and uplift is not the main issue. When you want to get in the air reduced uplift could cause a catastrophic incident...@@Uranium-238-Eater
@@maxi962 That a340 was already struggling to climb. Nearly comedic actually. With that reasoning, the tail wind should have spiced things up even more.
Since my English is not good, I could not understand it fully. I would appreciate it if you could explain why there was a problem with the Edelweiss plane, while Swiss Air's plane can take off from runway 34 and tail wind is not a problem. I would be glad if you could explain.
so when the tailwind component increased from 7 to 8 knots of tailwind they had to redo their takeoff performance calculations and they were a few hundret kilos to heavy to accept the tailwind, now if the other aircraft are loaded more lightly either in fuel or in passengers / cargo, they can accept a highter tailwind component.
Captain should have left the 1st officer to do the landing part of the flight. He sounds a bit heavy handed yet during the flight he was corrected severally by the 1st officer who sounded more alert and focussed than the old and tired looking Captain.
Before the flight, all three are fit to command the flight. Nothing wrong one would correct the other one, after all the cockpit was supposed to be a team work office. Once you reach the same age with the pilots, you should appreciate life. 😁🤭
