Ish With Fish What happened to a neutral review.. sounds to me you really like this reel and no complaints. But a cast alloy main gear will fail with time of use. I'd still stick with shimano cheaper reels a name you can trust. Nasci for the same price and name anglers recognize. What about parts if something were to fail or be replaced? Also can you put a 4000 spool on the 5000 body or vise versa?
thanks for the feedback. not sure how this review comes across as not neutral? i do state upfront it's a comped vid. i did state it's undersized for a '5000', and the drag is overkill at least for my daily use. otherwise everything said is experience-based. re body gears, from kk website "fortified brass gears". i don't know enough about metallurgy to test that, to me they could be pot alloy, from experience they've held up, 0 meshing issues. for the record, i think the main gear in the Battle II is pot alloy, pretty common material at this price range. re servicing, i don't know if kk sells individual parts, but in my experience, they've always been great about returns: they took back a baitcaster i didn't like and replaced line spools that got damaged in shipment. re spool, 99% sure the spools are specific to its body size, can't be interchanged. maybe kk will confirm that here.
if you're a fan of Alan Hawk maybe you should read his reviews. Kastking reels are not recommended by Alan Hawk! He actually knows hat he is talking about and does a proper review. I don't understand why you always promote such cheap crap reels. For $100 you can get a daiwa BG 5000 which is a far superior reel than the Kodiak or any Penn. Kastking sucks!
thx for the feedback. i actually do read his reviews which are very in-depth and objectively speaking, superior to mine in every way. but note, they're his opinions, and i have my own. just because he's for/against a brand doesn't mean i won't try something myself. i'm not on a mission to evaluate and rate the best reels ever, i'm just an avg guy keying into what's popular (trendy, sales volume, whatever found it's way into my Amazon cart, etc) and sharing my hands-on experiences (unless otherwise noted) to help inform others' purchase decisions. i never say 'buy this, not that'; i try to give a visual overview, highlights, and maybe a peak inside. if it works for me, i'll let you know. if it doesn't, i'll let you know. bulk sales volume of every price point is often the low end, and that shouldn't be ignored, so i try to include personal experience that runs the gamut: sougayilang wq failed, penn fierce ii and battle ii are solid, kastking kodiak great value, daiwa ballistic just ok, etc. all my opinion of course, you have your own. but thank you for yours, hopefully viewers will find it and use it for their purchase decision too.
some recommendations: please develop larger sizes (true 6000-8000 would be appreciated in the west coast!), and a high speed version! 6.2:1 would be perfect for surf lures. i see you're already on the third gen sharky, second gen orca and mela, hoping this review helps give input for the second gen kodiak.
I just bought a kodiak 3000 and it had a much improved line roller bearing, so that's good. One issue I have noticed after a month of use river smallmouth fishing is the bail gets loose as it's only held in with a roll pin.
Just can't thank you enough for this review. I am getting into saltwater fishing on the surf. Don't wanna get anything expensive yet buying el cheapo one which ended up broken after few fishing trip won't do any justice. This reel is perfect for novice surf angler like me.
Excellent review! I’m always looking for tear down reviews to see what’s going on in these reels. Appreciate your honesty unlike these other kastking “sponsored “ videos.
I enjoyed your video so much that I bought a new 2500 Kodiac. I have been trolling with and without downriggers for most of the last 50 years or so and there isn't much structure to be worried about. I use 6-8# pound test(mono) and 5'6"-7" ultralight ugly sticks. The reels started with mitchell 300's(France), the small Zebco cardinals, the small Garcia cardinals and pinnacle ultralights. Now I don't continue trolling after the fish is on. The boat stops(18' aluminum with 70HP Johnson). The tackle is removed and it's man vs fish. And we are lucky enough to have Walleye, Smallies ,pickerel, pike, and of course all the Salmonoids. I fish in what I believe is the fishing' capital of the world Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence. Biggest King on Ultralight is 24lbs. Thanks again for the great video!
Excellent review! I really like the design of that gear train. The fact that you don't have to remove the shaft to get the main gear out is brilliant. Most reels you have to pull the shaft out to be able to access the oscillating gear and slide. The only thing you missed was the bail spring mechanism. It would have been interesting to see how the spring was set in the rotor. I have had a lot of trouble with my bail springs on the penn conquer and spinfisher. The springs don't fail since they are a coil spring but the piece that fits in the spring that connects to the bail hinge fails. And they are a royal pain in the ass to fix.
+pat yes! in my penns, you have to pull the center shaft to unlock the main gear. in the kk, you gotta wiggle it a bunch, but it'll come out. lol i intentionally didn't open up the bail arm cause i know how easy the guts pop out. pandoras box in there!
thank you! so much time went into this one, hopefully the manu sees the response and comes back with bigger sizes and a higher speed model in the next iteration.
thx so much! a ton of work goes into these review vids, often more than a regular fishing vid, so i appreciate the kind words. funny, i watched the first few minutes of this kk review again and geez i must have been super sleepy while i filmed lol. i watched it back at 1.25x speed and it sounds like the cadence i have in my recent reviews lol, i've started narrating faster to tighten things up.
Ish With Fish I've watched a few more of your reviews. I can see them being a little smoother, but I like how they don't feel rushed. Too many people use jump cuts to speed up there reviews, but it ends up feeling way to fast. I appreciate your hard work. It shows.
I have this reel - initially it feels pretty smooth and the bearing count is nice. The line roller went out in just 2 trips of heavy duty spoon casting fishing.
agreed. i had limited success with this reel, and then after this review the line roller went out. i'm hearing good things about the okuma epixor for a solid, affordable kayak salt reel.
You should buy one and see if it the same as the one they have sent to you. Maybe they build some of their reel specific for reviewers and pay better attention to detail.
Kudos for a very good and complete review. I currently do not own any Kastking products, but that will change. Also appreciate the time you put into this review too. Tight lines!🎣👍
Hey man....that was a great review. Unbiased and thorough. I think I'm going to buy one of these reels for light surf casting here in Costa Rica. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together.
thx man, np! before you pull the trigger on the kodiak, i suggest you look at my daiwa bg review and bg vs battle ii review. i tested it after the kodiak. in the end, i think the bg is best saltwater-rated spinning reel for under $100, ever. the kodiak did well for light inshore, but since this vid, the roller bearing failed (the surf salt and salt was too much). the bg is the better all around reel. just being honest before you make a purchase👊
i really like the BG (i have the penn battle II 8000 and penn fierce II 4000) but was wondering if the fact that the ball bearings aren't sealed will cause problems with salt water.
yeah, they can't really take prolonged exposure. good thing is, bg's are so common there's a replacement parts readily available. the saltist is a nice step up, more protection (if you don't mind dealing with magseal).
right on bro. this vid is intended to either justify your purchase or help someone decide. trust me, if it was junk, i'd say so, just like my sougayilang.
Thanks for the careful review, lot of quality for the price. They have a new "flagship" (Kapstan or something) that seems to be a beast, if they will put a bait runner on it, I will buy it.
Ish With Fish oh yeah cool Ive always used penn and shimano and the OLD school bg diawa only opened my 6500 cause I dropped it in saltwater like an ass while dehooking a cubera.I was impressed with how well made the guts are and diawa isnt the most expensive brand either but can hang with serious spinning reels.Btw that reel reminds me of an okuma my inlaw has he loves that reel lol
Anyone who fish enough can go off of what this video has in its content. If my graphite frame 4000 spinning reel with 26.5 lb. drag can hold up to an all day fishing for mahi, tuna, skip jacks, and rainbow runners, this reel can definitely bully those fish and bigger. It’s absolutely unbelievable what this reel is made of and how it’s built for the price. You get what you paid for has always been the case until Kastking showed up in the market. I do love my expensive reels but Kastking is slowly making it into my arsenal these days. Dinosaur fishermen will always swear by the name brands and price points but will be reluctant to admit that it doesn’t help catch more fish and land them. It’s all skill when the fish is hooked to land them and the features of this reel will definitely help. If you don’t agree, let me be the first one to tell you that your private parts are bigger than everyone else, to save you from burning thumb calories in replying to this comment😊👍🏽
I have the 4000 kodiak and I agree with everything you say except for the Line roller bearing that in mine started making a funny noise and when I took it apart, the bearing was rusty and had to take it off because it went stiff and would not roll properly.
i agree with you too :) in my pinned comment update, i noted after 65 hours my line roller bearing failed too. kk sent me a replacement assembly in 2 days. my friend's line roller also failed after a few months. if anyone is reading this, pack your kodiak line roller with marine grease asap.
if your reel is less than a year old, they (kastking customer service) should be able to send you a replacement part or maybe a new reel. ask for paul.
Ish With Fish Great advice! They have already sent me the roller bearing set. Awesome service KastKing. Another question, I was thinking about getting a traveling road and I was thinking about a 4 or 3 pieces rod but I saw your review on the telescopic KastKing and it also looks like a nice option. Which one would you recommend? Thanks
Nice breakdown of the Kodiak 5K! I have one on my alt-crabbing setup which has now become my go-to rockfishing reel and it's a total workhorse. The drag has been giving me some issues recently but that's likely a sand issue and one that can be rectified with a thorough cleaning-- plus I abuse the hell out of my gear. Comp'd or not, I still think you did a fair job of showcasing the reel. Tight lines!
Have got several KK reels, generally happy with them - though my Kodiak 4k recently died, the main gear shattered in several pieces, first and only time this has happened across my many reels. Really disappointed since Ive never even put any cranking pressure apart from lure / sinker retrieval!
+Die Hard Fishing thx dh! It's def worthy of the salt. I recommend 20-30lb ultrathin braid max for casting to maximize line capacity. Btw, loved your last vid! Good stuff👍
Love my kastking kodiak definitely worth every dollar.. Beast of a reel for salt water. 👍👍 Tested it first in hawaii now I cant wait to horse in some freshwater michigan giants haha thanks for the review bradda ish!!!
hey Ish, nice video as always and thanks for the effort for making this video. I really like the kodiak 5000, it's smooth, light and feel great. only thing that went wrong w/ my kodiak was the line roller, and they make grinding noise when reeling in the line, not very pleasant when fishing at night in the pier.
Joe you can use a 7x4x2.5 bearing ro replace the junk one they include. I have a sharky 3 which is essentially a carbon/plastic version of the kodiak and it had a bad line roller bearing out of the box.
@@ishwithfish they turned a blind eye on me they are rubbish I have the the top of the range mega jaws it's rubbish and kk said it's all good but it grinds so loud when winding lol
Kodiak is the King for that size. I have the 3000. But I’m switching to the 1000. Since it has 33lb of drag. The only thing I wish is that we can add more braid. Do what shimano does the compact.
TheMass33 what do you use the 3000 for I’m thinking of buying one for some inshore fishing (red drum) and pairing it with a calico jack 7’6 rod Do you think it would work?
I was watching your other video and it dawned on me to ask you, do you wash your reels in freshwater after fishing in saltwater? If you don't, you should. Not totally wash it but give it a good rinse.
My problem with your review is you didn’t show it going through the stress of a big fish or any fish really. Your review just described your personal feeling of a free reel.
Plus asking to highest the price, if you spend 60 hrs and didn't catch any fish or just one, what kind of review is that? Like someone mentioned is your personal review.
Awesome review! I actually bought one because of this video lol! I really like mine, except for the faint clicking when I spun the reel, which I later found out was caused by the bail trigger pin contacting the ramp. The noise later went away I guess after the paint wore off. Btw what's the torx driver size(s) needed to take it apart? I wanna check out the guts too and do my own maintenance. Thanks!
Right on, thx! Pretty sure it's a T-10 for all torx screws. Fyi, my line roller bearing went out after 65 hours+ in the salt, my friend's did too, so be wary of that part. Otherwise, solid reel so far.
I think this reel resembles the Daiwa Freams to some extent. Corresponds to the 3500/4000 size. Would be nice to see a comparision. Planned buying one Kodiak but the 5000 size is the same as Penn 4000 size. I simply bought two Penn Conflict 4000 (on sale) instead. Cheaper than the Kodiak. A new Conflict is coming out... selling point "It's lighter". They simply ditch the aluminum body for a plastic one. Beats me.
Artur Malachowski yup, the kk sizing standard seems on the smaller end. I have a daiwa and penn comparison near the end of this vid, for visual scale. I have a 2500 conflict too, great reel.
Ish With Fish, the comparison I had in mind was one concerning performance and build quality... but taking apart a magsealed reel (and keeping that feature intact) is still a mystery. The magseal oil is not available in stores. :(
Artur Malachowski ah ok. so i did a review of the mag-sealed Daiwa Ballistic, only put a few hours on it, but enough to know what i liked vs what i didn't. serviceability is one of the cons i discuss, check it out if it helps.
HI, VERY NICE REVIEW, CAN YOU TELL ME IF THE ROTOR IS ALUMINUM MADE AS THE BRAND CLAIMS? LOOKS MORE LIKE PLASTIC TO ME. AND I YOU COMPARE THIS REEL TO THE NEW SHARKY 3 GOLD WICH ONE YOU THINK IS BETTER MADE OR HAVE BETTER FEATURES? THANKS
Hi i have this specific reel in malaysia..but it have a different name..it is called strike 2 pro elite..the different thing is that my reel is made in japan, comes with carbon knob and got extra spool...you can google by its name...i love this reel...the biggest fish i caught is 9kg spanish mackerel..
good review , looks like an awesome reel for the price, as for the cast looking main gear i never thought much of them but my fin nors that i have put through hell for 6 years have held up perfectly with very similar looking gears, i'd prob buy one if they made it in a bigger size/ faster ratio
+Ashley Petersen cool, i always hear great things about fin noirs. yup, one thing i asked kk to do is to make a high speed 6.2:1 version. the Kodiak as-is though is geared well for bottom fishing: can bounce 6 oz butterflies with np.
They advertise these as solid aluminium body but looks like painted plastic to me? Is this the case? Can you flex the reel stem easily when it's installed on the rod?
$0 but they've sent me product over time, some good some crappy. this reel was good for about 60 salt hours then the roller bearing seized, lost a few bearings since. the daiwa bg can't be beat in this range.
i don't think it will. the 5000 is more like a 3500 or 4000. i don't know much about musky other than they'll destroy undersize gear. based on my experience with the lexa 300 or komodo ss 300 size baitcasters, i'd start with those, i think the better option for the 'fish of 10,000 casts'.
Good afternoon sir, believe it or not I'm 67 yrs old, and I know nothing about fishing. So I am looking for good honest information. I could be wrong, but I noticed that your last post was 2 yrs ago. I have to say I could watch your vids not get bored or call BS and move on. Where did you go? What's coming out today is lacking. I don't know if anyone goes to the depth you go to. You are appreciated, " Where did you go? "😂
Hi. I want to know that reel is superior in quality and resistance to salt water. Kodiac or sharky III? why was Kodiac discontinued? I can buy one or the other. Which is better? Which one do you recommend me buy? Thank you
After a long stressful week at work how do I unwind? With a very relaxing and detailed product review from IWF lol. Nice informative review as always. Have you had the opportunity to test out the KK Sharky or Orca? Looking for a reel to pair to my blackhawk. This one seems to have potential.
+bigwoo 🤣right on bro! I'm happy this one is doing well. I haven't seen the sharky or orca yet, but fyi, they just released the shark iii baitfeeder, I'm excited about that one👍
I WANT ONE SO BAD, but if something major messes up, will the protection plan still cover it. And also, is it lightweight cause I wanted this or fierce 6000 but it sure is heavy.
+Reeling N' Revving hi, thx for asking. they have a pretty good return policy for the first year; anything breaks, they replace. after that though, I'm not sure. re size, tbh it's only the size of a penn 4000, daiwa 3500. if you want a true 6000 reel, look elsewhere. it's pretty light for its size, stiff too.
Kastking is more trying to suit people who have much lower budgets for fishing gear. You'd be surprised how many people feel paying over $100 for a fishing reel is a lot of money.
How is the clicker system, bought a sharky ll after two weeks fishing the aluminum spool is demolished by the stainless steel pen , and doesn’t make any sound anymore
+Dolf Scholte the clicker system is great, about 70 salt hours in almost 12 months, including surf, and no problems so far👍 i think you'll see it in the tear down in this vid.
That is good to hear.. it is the best reel kastking makes they told me..It will arrive in a couple of days. I demollisch two starky's ll (2000 and 4000) in just two weeks fishing on catfish. I let you know what happens after two weeks fishing on catfish in a pond.
Reel arrived..spinning is very smooth! Everything is very smooth..clicker system a lot better then the sharky ll . Reel is solid. I demolish the sharky ll in two weeks intense fishing on catfish .
@@ishwithfish thank you friend but daiwa bg expensive ,live in antalya here baracuda alot of for baracuda fishing daiwa regal or kastking kodiak tihinking
Just looking at the specs and you even say in the video- a lack of line capacity for some applications. I am guessing you need to go braid and go heavier and look to bully the fish given the drag, want to avoid spooling on a good fish. Does it come with a spare spool? Thanks. Would love your opinion against the Daiwa BG of similar size.
Thx for the comment. Yup, I kinda soft rant about this in my Piscifun Stone review vid: always surprised e-brands put huge washer discs in these small reels. The high drag is great only if you have the line capacity to handle a fish that can really test the high drag. It doesn't come with a spare spool. Size-wise, I'd compare the Kodiak 5000 it to a BG 3000/3500. Performance-wise, the BG is the superior reel. I tested a BG 4000 after this Kodiak review and have a full BG review vid plus a 1v1 BG vs Battle II vid. Watch to see which one I think is the world's best value reel :)
Anyone know what size the line roller bearing is? Apparently they didn't grease mine at the factory and I got it wet once and now it makes a really loud whining noise. I greased it but it doesn't even last one trip and it gets wet from the braid. The only way I can keep it somewhat quiet is to use haevy automotive grease.
You mentioned it's all aluminum body except the under cover but then you also said the side plate is also plastic? I would say Daiwa BG is in the same price category.
hi, def the 5000. it's their largest kodiak but is the same size as a penn 4000 or daiwa 3500. i wish they made them in bigger sizes w/high-speed versions for true plugging.
a used daiwa sealine or penn squall should be affordable and last forever. if you want something really cheap and new, i heard kastking rover reels are decent.
+Harvey Yong haha nice, thx for the support! what i really want is a crack at their new Sharky III baitfeeder. alotta sharks and rays waiting to put it to work! (see end screen🤤)
I second that notion! The Sharky III baitfeeder is at the top of my list of newer reels I want to try. It's in my Amazon cart now but I wanted to read or watch some reviews first. I'm landlocked in the Midwest (Indiana) but we have some healthy catfish to drag in. Also big carp are a great fight. 30+ years of bottom fishing for cats and still doing it the old way with the bail closed and staring at the rod tip in the dark. That baitfeeder would be fantastic. Yes I know I could use bait casters and I have some but I prefer spinning reels. Great reviews my friend. We anticipate a Sharky III if they make it happen.
if you can afford a clash, get the clash. i have a 4000 as my plugging reel and it's great! a finer reel than my old battle ii, hands down. if your budget is 70-80 and you want to give the kodiak a shot, it's worth it, a solid option from kastking imo.
battle ii will handle any fish really. consider the daiwa bg too, imo slightly better reel dollar-for-dollar. i'm going to do a 1v1 vid and full bg review vid soon. know that the battle ii 4000 (utility size) is faster at 6.1:1, while the bg 4000 is 5.7:1. if you can't choose between the two, maybe let the gear ratio determine what's best for you, depending on how you fish.
i bought this reel in the 4000 size and after just a couple times fishing with it the handle shaft bent after pulling a 2lb bass out of some vegetation that wasn't even that thick. Not impressed
Yikes! sorry to hear, hope you were able to replace or return it. i caught some good sized surf species with this reel, including a couple dungeness crab doubles which are like winching in little parachutes. my 5000's still holding up.
Yeah i was surprized with all the good reviews. I got it from amazon and it was past there 1 month return policy but i was hoping the actual company would do something for me. called once, didn't get anyone but left a message with my number and reason for calling but they never got back to me
Matt Turner give them a call again and speak with I believe his name is Paul. The customer service that kastking offers is top notch! Make sure you are calling eposeidon, that is who handles all things kastking. Been using the reels, line and rods from them for a few years now and I've only had one problem with a reel and it was replaced with in a week.
the kodiak line roller bb eventually failed and seems to be the most common issue, so i'd be aware of that. never tested the sharky iii. give the okuma epixor or shimano sedona a look, both very solid reels at this price point.
@@ishwithfish I actually had this exact issue with the Valiant Eagle. The line roller bearing made a ton of noise after a few trips, and the reel components were not really as sealed as the advertising leads one to believe. I only fished it in freshwater and still had these issues.

Lookin 2kayak thx man. i try not to sway the viewer any way, rather give honest complete feedback to help your purchase decision👍
Lookin 2kayak k
I've had a 3k KastKing Kodiak for about 18 months fishing brackish water. It's held up well and feels very similar to my Stradics.
cool, just watch the rbb, i've had 2 seize in saltwater so far.
I am very satisfied with this brand of fishing line. I have sharky ll6000. It does not feel like $52.00.
I've got this had it for 3 years ,had Pollack 8lbs plus, great value for money
thx for the feedback👍🏼
I have the 4000, and I love it. Im glad to know that it will last me, cause I took a chance buying it untested.
right on bro. this vid is intended to either justify your purchase or help someone decide. trust me, if it was junk, i'd say so, just like my sougayilang.
Thanks for your reply, I love your videos.
Thanks for the careful review, lot of quality for the price. They have a new "flagship" (Kapstan or something) that seems to be a beast, if they will put a bait runner on it, I will buy it.
What i love about diawa is the huge gears 😍
+Manny Suarez that bg 4000 i featured is on loan from a sub, hope to review it soon! although i probably won't open it since it's not mine.
Good to see ur buddy "more than fishing" in the background..👍
I have the 4000 kodiak and I agree with everything you say except for the Line roller bearing that in mine started making a funny noise and when I took it apart, the bearing was rusty and had to take it off because it went stiff and would not roll properly.
i agree with you too :) in my pinned comment update, i noted after 65 hours my line roller bearing failed too. kk sent me a replacement assembly in 2 days. my friend's line roller also failed after a few months. if anyone is reading this, pack your kodiak line roller with marine grease asap.
Ish With Fish do you know where I could order a replacement?
if your reel is less than a year old, they (kastking customer service) should be able to send you a replacement part or maybe a new reel. ask for paul.
Ish With Fish thanks! I will do that.
Tight lines!
thanks P! yup, i think if you clean the sand out the drag should pull even again.
another awesome review ish i have been eyeballing that reel for some time. now ill have to get one tite lines man
Hey Ish! Great videos man! Any idea what the main gear is made of?
thx! main wasn't anything special, probably just pot alloy or some kind of zinc alloy.
Ish With Fish I picked up one for $40 Kodoak 1000) on eBay, super excited to get it.
@@ishwithfish Please, take all of these reels apart for your TH-cam audience after heavy saltwater use! Thank You 🙏
Have got several KK reels, generally happy with them - though my Kodiak 4k recently died, the main gear shattered in several pieces, first and only time this has happened across my many reels. Really disappointed since Ive never even put any cranking pressure apart from lure / sinker retrieval!
Nice review, considering this one for my next surf reel. Hopefully to put it to the test of some beast striped bass!
+Die Hard Fishing thx dh! It's def worthy of the salt. I recommend 20-30lb ultrathin braid max for casting to maximize line capacity. Btw, loved your last vid! Good stuff👍
Thanks man! We gotta get back out to the surf soon!
Love my kastking kodiak definitely worth every dollar.. Beast of a reel for salt water. 👍👍 Tested it first in hawaii now I cant wait to horse in some freshwater michigan giants haha thanks for the review bradda ish!!!
Shaka po'opa'a right on pounda! don't see you much on the ig anymore? hoping to see pics of those Midwest gyyyants👍
Ish With Fish me and the wife got rid of all social media besides youtube. lol maybe a joint ig for the family will be up in the future (;
Shaka po'opa'a right on man, probably the healthiest thing you can do nowadays. best of luck, see you around these yt parts✌
Lovin the reel reviews... keep em coming!
hey Ish, nice video as always and thanks for the effort for making this video. I really like the kodiak 5000, it's smooth, light and feel great. only thing that went wrong w/ my kodiak was the line roller, and they make grinding noise when reeling in the line, not very pleasant when fishing at night in the pier.
dude, return it! kk has always been good to me about replacing product. i got a couple trashed line spools once in the mail and they replaced it asap.
TheMass33 what do you use the 3000 for I’m thinking of buying one for some inshore fishing (red drum) and pairing it with a calico jack 7’6 rod
Do you think it would work?
Great video very informative and its a reel I can afford.
I was watching your other video and it dawned on me to ask you, do you wash your reels in freshwater after fishing in saltwater? If you don't, you should. Not totally wash it but give it a good rinse.
yes! i use a hose on mist mode to spray off salt and sand.
Got a 2000 and never used it. Still brand new in the box.
Looks very similar to the ATC Valliant 5000 that I use !
I bought the 1000 cause it has 30lbs of drag. Which is crazy.
Good honest review.
My problem with your review is you didn’t show it going through the stress of a big fish or any fish really. Your review just described your personal feeling of a free reel.
Ive caught 9kg spanish mackerel with this reel but with different name
@@wanayep what reel is that? Is that the DMK reel?
Strike 2 pro elite is the name
BG is one dope reel got one and it always put a great fight on sharks out here in the bay!
the one shown is loaned out to me from a sub! hoping to catch something decent to put it to work, hope to have a review out in the near future.
Opinions are like... well, YOU know jimbo
Thank you for the video.
can't find on the market ??
older video so this product might have stopped production.
THANKS
the kodiak rotor is definitely aluminum. if they send me a sharky gold to compare i'd love to, otherwise i have too many reels to purchase another lol
Hi what do you think for Kastking Kodiak compared to Penn Slammer 3 or 4? should i go for Penn Slammer or Kodiak is just as good?
They advertise these as solid aluminium body but looks like painted plastic to me? Is this the case? Can you flex the reel stem easily when it's installed on the rod?
body is aluminum for sure, very stiff when mounted. it's a decent little reel, but the rbb fail quickly in salt.
'Talk about going in-depth with the review and breakdown. Good job Ish, appreciate it and nice to see you hangin' out with "More Than Fishing" :)....
thx man, yup always a good time with kuya mtf😁 the full video of that clip is on my surfperch playlist.
Great review!!
+Marc G. thx! tried to give it a thorough test to see if it could hold up.
I enjoyed the review very much.
We’re you compensated for your great review? If so how much?
$0 but they've sent me product over time, some good some crappy. this reel was good for about 60 salt hours then the roller bearing seized, lost a few bearings since. the daiwa bg can't be beat in this range.
The BG 5000 is $130. This reel shouldn't even be compared to the BG in both quality and cost.
i wonder if it will hold up well for musky at that size, need a new reel next year
i don't think it will. the 5000 is more like a 3500 or 4000. i don't know much about musky other than they'll destroy undersize gear. based on my experience with the lexa 300 or komodo ss 300 size baitcasters, i'd start with those, i think the better option for the 'fish of 10,000 casts'.
Great reel in my opinion. On the other hand I got a kast king Mela and it's extremely rough, I can't quite figure out what is wrong with it.
+Alex Gilson sorry to hear, i suggest asking them for a replacement.
Ish With Fish I've considered doing that
2 years pass now. If you have to pick between Kastking Kodiak vs Penn Fierce 2, which would you pick now?
id get a fierce iii, which now comes with the ht100 drag that the clash has, great performance.
Megatron vs Kodiak?
Thank you
imo and based on sub feedback, the sharky iii is the best kastking bang for your buck spinner.
Wish they still made it. Why did they stop?
+Reeling N' Revving hi, thx for asking. they have a pretty good return policy for the first year; anything breaks, they replace. after that though, I'm not sure. re size, tbh it's only the size of a penn 4000, daiwa 3500. if you want a true 6000 reel, look elsewhere. it's pretty light for its size, stiff too.
glad i found your channel.
awesome bro, thx for tuning in👍
Cheap version of the old shimano stradicFH. But seems to be worth the $60 price drop now in 2020
Where did you see a 60$ price drop?. For the price point I've seen I'd go with a BG or something similar.
Will Slagle eBay from China
@@franchisefred4066 wish they were that much off on the larger sizes
+Dolf Scholte oh wow, sounds like some good fish! sounds like you're better off with their rover baitcaster?
Reel arrived..spinning is very smooth! Everything is very smooth..clicker system a lot better then the sharky ll . Reel is solid.
I demolish the sharky ll in two weeks intense fishing on catfish .
friend me too think to buy this reel ,how good? or sharky 3 or seaknight wr3 or seaknight TREANT III ,daiwa regal whic one i must buy? for sea fishing
Daiwa BG👍🏼
Looks like they dont carry this anymore... Does the Kastking Sharky III spinning reel have flex? I found that being an issue with kastking reels.
hi, not sure never tried the sharky iii, but the kodiak was pretty solid👍
a lot less flex than the daiwa freams/fuego/exceller. As stiff as the shimano nasci
+Anthony c mine also failed around 65 hours, kk sent replacement in 2 business days. knowing what i know, i def recommend packing it before use.
Yes the bearing is not shielded so it super easy to get water in it,I just accidentally dunked mine once in fresh water.
I contacted Kastking and they asked for my order number and address and never got a replacement bearing
Hi,,can i ask you my friend...what can you say about the lurekiller spinning reel?... do you think its a good reel?
sorry, not familiar with that reel.
Is this about the same size as the BG15? I'm interested and thanks for the help.
+Edward Simpson welp, i don't know exactly. by daiwa standards, id say it's closest to the newer BG 3000.
What do you guys catch on the California coast?
Lots of species. Striper, halibut, salmon, lingcod, tuna, yellowtail. I even fish for crab. Tasty stuff!
You mentioned it's all aluminum body except the under cover but then you also said the side plate is also plastic?
I would say Daiwa BG is in the same price category.
+Jan young side plate is aluminum, side dressings (the circular plates around the handle) are plastic.
what is the lure you are using to catch crab on your pole and where can i find one?
+Evan Sandridge check out my 'crab snaring gear' vid, explains how i do it😊🎣🦀
would you recommend the 4000 or the 5000 when fishing for big blue fish, striped bass and other larger saltwater inshore fishing?
hi, def the 5000. it's their largest kodiak but is the same size as a penn 4000 or daiwa 3500. i wish they made them in bigger sizes w/high-speed versions for true plugging.
Ish With Fish thanks ish, is a 7' HM rod big enough for the 5000 or should I I look for a bigger rod?
+Brian Nasarenko yup that'll be fine. Elias V Fishing uses a Kodiak 5000 with his 7' kayak rods, pulls up many 20 lb+ stripers with it👍
ok great, thanks a lot
I need a cheap trolling reel what you recommend
a used daiwa sealine or penn squall should be affordable and last forever. if you want something really cheap and new, i heard kastking rover reels are decent.
Ish With Fish ok bro thanks
Ish With Fish thanks i got a pen for 89 . For me that's a lot of money but i guess is well invested
Trolling for what?
Striped Bass?
Blue Marlin???
Ammo Man hello bro..deep sea fishing
excellent video, now if only u could get rid of mayor de blastio!
TO KASTKING: DONATE A SHARKY II 6000 TO THIS GUY. I want to see if it can survive a dunk in salt water!
New sub. 👍🏻
I have 8 different kastking reels and I like all of them but each one has some type of noise when reeling or casting so you get what you pay for
exactly👌🏽
hey ish where did you buy that rotating cake stand thing at?
:) it's a rotating jewelry display, probably all over amazon and ebay.
How long the reel last?thanks
the reel itself is pretty solid, but the roller bb will fail in salt after 60-70 hours.
Your vids are goods men
Is there a kastking 8000 series sized reel in other models?
+Josh Stew i don't think so. i think their sharky ii and dualis offer their largest offerings, up to 6000.
Would you prefer the Clash or the KastKing ?
if you can afford a clash, get the clash. i have a 4000 as my plugging reel and it's great! a finer reel than my old battle ii, hands down. if your budget is 70-80 and you want to give the kodiak a shot, it's worth it, a solid option from kastking imo.
Ish With Fish Thank you!
Ish With Fish or would you recommend the Battle 2 for Pikes, Cod, Sea Trout and Tropical Fishing?
battle ii will handle any fish really. consider the daiwa bg too, imo slightly better reel dollar-for-dollar. i'm going to do a 1v1 vid and full bg review vid soon. know that the battle ii 4000 (utility size) is faster at 6.1:1, while the bg 4000 is 5.7:1. if you can't choose between the two, maybe let the gear ratio determine what's best for you, depending on how you fish.
Ish With Fish they BG and Clash are interesting. Which of these two would you recommend me?
can u review seaknight rapid 4000H..
+Muhammad Syahiran if they send me one, definitely.
please do a review for sharky 3
+Jef Pascual if they send me one id be happy to😊 I'm literally buried in reels for review lol, some cheap, some super high end, stay tuned
do you know where i can get parts for my kastking kodiak?
you'd have to contact kk directly, they've sent me reel parts in the past👍
Is the main gear made out of aluminium?
pretty sure it's zinc.
So this or the Daiwa BG?
BG. best value reel today.
This reel is light...daiwa bg for the same size almost 100gram more
BG!...If you can spend $130 for a 5000 there's nothing to think about.
I come here for the music
+FloridaRaider 😂
LMFAOOOOOOOOO 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 🎶 🎶
Where is the kastking kodiak 5000 manufactured?
China
Thanks. Everything now a days is made in China it's still a amazing reel.
i bought this reel in the 4000 size and after just a couple times fishing with it the handle shaft bent after pulling a 2lb bass out of some vegetation that wasn't even that thick.
What’s the pinion gear material of ?
pinion gear is brass, 90% sure main drive gear is pot alloy (not zinc/alu like i was hoping)
Did you ever dunk it in the water and/or reel it underwater?
+L.I. Archer dunked a few times in HI, never spun underwater. its not a sealed reel so i wouldn't try it.
This one or the sharky 3?
the kodiak line roller bb eventually failed and seems to be the most common issue, so i'd be aware of that. never tested the sharky iii. give the okuma epixor or shimano sedona a look, both very solid reels at this price point.
@@ishwithfish I actually had this exact issue with the Valiant Eagle. The line roller bearing made a ton of noise after a few trips, and the reel components were not really as sealed as the advertising leads one to believe. I only fished it in freshwater and still had these issues.
Are parts available?
to my knowledge, there is currently no parts-only catalog to support this reel.
Ish With Fish that would be the number one reason not to purchase one. I've had reels with issues only after a month of use.
+James good to know, good tip, ill consider that for future reviews.
En el primer uso el piñon central se desintegro sin motivo alguno lo di por perdido. a uotro compañero le paso exactamente lo mismo, malo muy malo
are the reel sizes more like shimano or daiwa in comparison ?
more like Shimano
