Save your Money! Telescopic Fishing Rod VS Two-piece Fishing Rod

  • We are reviewing and field testing a telescopic fishing rod
    (KastKing BlackHawk II) against a two piece fishing rod (KastKing Sharky III Combo). Both of these fishing rods will stow away easy, but which one is worth your hard earned cash? Is a combo worth the price difference? Does the Telescopic rod have good sensitivity? Is the fishing rod durable? Is the fishing rod difficult to set up? All these questions and more will be answered in this review! Stay tuned yall!
    QUICK TIPS!
    For the two piece rod you should NOT have to force the two pieces together all the way. It is preferred to use just enough force to join the two securely. Anything more will increase the chance of failure, breakage, or not being able to get it off!
    We recommend not "high sticking fish" (using the rod to hold the fish up) as this results in a higher percentage of rod breaks. These fish were smaller so the rod was able to handle it, but any bigger and it puts your rod at risk!

    Nice vid. I think a telescopic rod is like one of those folding entrenchment tools. It won't outperform a regular shovel, but you're not gonna carry a regular shovel on a five mile hike. Right tool for the right job and all that.
    Still want a telescopic rod for my motorcycle bag!

      Yeah, I find my telescopic Abu Garcia to be indispensable on the bike. I surf fish, and my normal surf rod is 13', breaks into three pieces, two 6' lengths and the 1' tip... I'm definitely not carrying that on a motorbike, but my AG collapses down from 12' to just over 2, much easier to put in a backpack.

    The love you have for fishing, and the excitement that you have with every fish, no matter how big or small, your viewer can hear in your voice, with every hook set. It's so inspiring, but I know, I have it too. I don't comment very often but I love your guys videos, and although I don't get to fish salt water very often but have learned a lot about fishing in general. I will be buying some salty squid to go in my travel pack and to try in fresh water. I have the Shimano bait runner as well and haven't got to use it yet. I'll be ready though when the time comes. Thanks

    I have a small telescopic fishing rod and I find that the easiest and quickest way to set it up is by, setting the drag really loose, then pull up on the closest part of the rod to you / the reel while aligning the eye at the same time. Then pull up on the next one while aligning the eye, and so on till you get to the tip.

    For me, inconvenience of transportation, especially without a case, and longer length are 2 cons of 2+ piece rods. Yet if you look hard enough, you can find more or less variable action and power for both types. My choice is telescopic ;)

The 2-piece is easier in general to shove in a tube and go or even take them assembled and rigged when space permits.

    I think it is more so a thing or personal choice or habit, for those of us who are "hobby fishermen".
    Used both in the past and personally, I prefer a 1 piece or 2 piece rod. Brand of choice, Ugly Stik. Again, something that is more so a personal choice, based on experiences as a hobby fisherman.
    But it is nice to watch a video about the options out there and remember that one can never have enough fishing gear in the man cave! :)

    I was considering a telescopic rod for bicycle camping, and I was wondering about the sensitivity of them. The lighter test line only has a marginal sensitivity increase, the reason I wondered about the telescopic was all the joints they have, it's those joints that take away the sensitivity, this is why pro fishermen use only one piece rods, but for backpacking or bike camping those and two-piece rods are impractical. Now, after watching this and you proving my thoughts, I decided to go with a USA Tenkara Hane, while it is telescopic they made it extremely lightweight at around 2.7 ounces, this rod has no eyes thus the sensitivity is not reduced by lots of eyes; there is no reel seat either which also takes some sensitivity...yes, you don't use a reel with this rod, it extends from just 15 inches to 10' 10". Tenkara rods are extremely sensitive, surpassing even single piece rods due to no eyes, no real seats, no metal sections where the pieces lock into. Why else would a person want a telescopic rod? to be as portable as possible, but why ruin the fishing with insensitive rods? Tenkara rods are expensive but you do get what you pay for. I've used my Tenkara and it is indeed more sensitive than my St Croix Mojo fly rod. While the Tenkara rods are fly rods, I've used mine with small lures in streams as well as with bait, and of course flies. Fly fishing is great for when I bike pack because the fly box holds a lot of flies in a small lightweight container. Anyway, this is the direction I went, so obviously it's just my humble opinion, but Tenkara Hane does suit my needs perfectly.

  • @DustyTheDog
    @DustyTheDog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    EVERY telescoping rod I have ever owned has lost an eyelet or has had the eyes spin around when I was using it. I even went as far as to pay about 100$ for one, which I returned 2 weeks later because of the aforementioned issues. Never have I lost an eyelet or had one spin on a two-piece or one-piece rod. I also feel more sensitivity with one/two piece over the telescoping. I don't do a lot of saltwater fishing, actually I do none. Maybe this has an effect on it, I'm not sure. I have also found that the overall quality of the rod will be better for the same price when you get a one/two piece versus a telescoping rod.

    great video. i would love to be able to utilize a 2 piece or even some 1 piece rods. but as i spend all of my free time backpacking,camping,and fishing its not easy carring those type of rods.
    . i have 2 black hawk 2 bait casting rods $50 each. 2 shimano exchege rods 150 each. and 1 diawa bbb that cost me $400. all of witch are baitcasting telescopic rods. the kast kings are by far my favorite. although i did a grip mod that made it much more comfortable to fish all day with. still the strength and quality is far better than the shimano. and even though my diawa is better in everyway. i have to be more careful with it. i have to take the reel off the rod to put the rod in the case it came with to travel with it. as with the kast king i just put them in side mesh pockets of my backpack with my lures still tied. the protective cover leaves enough room for even a lunker combat frog i even manage to leave on my large swim baits. plus kast king has a much larger selection with a size, power, and action chart that makes it very easy to buy what you need. . i will be purchasing 3 more in different sizes. I am selling the other rods. dont knock kast king till you tried them.

    I travel to Bermuda to help my friend fix his boat. Which one would you choose to take on the plane? The target species I've seen so far out there are Bermuda Chub, basically a ton of in shore pan fish, some red grouper, basically more protected waters kind of fishing. It'll be off my friend's boat. But I need compactness to carry on the plane and around, and can possibly deal with a 40-50 pound fish. I have an old straight up fiberglass southbend proton, and am looking to upgrade for this next trip.

    I started with the kastking and broke the tip 3 times. I started researching for a better made telescopic rod and low and be hold the diawa triple b popped up. A little pricy but well worth the money in my opinion. I’ve caught 5,6,8 pound bass on it as well as a 5 foot gator and no issues what so ever. Bass pro makes one as well it’s called the adventuri 1 and it’s only 60 bucs and better than the black Hawk in my opinion.

    I feel like this isn't an apples to apples comparison. Looks like you're comparing an ultralight(?) vs the blackhawk? The blackhawk comes in ML as the lowest option. There's no ultralight Blackhawk, so I could see why it would be less sensitive. Also, the Blackhawk is one of the only telescopics that has a baitcaster option. I don't know, just seems like a wierd comparison to me. I keep the blackhawk in my back seat so I always have a rod with me.

    If i were you I would buy a Pelonis telescopic rod. I use mine for kayak fishing and it is insanely good. It isn’t too flexible and not to sturdy but i love it.

    I had the 6'6 medium Kastking blackhawk II. It broke very easily in the center of the rod, at an extension joint. READ THE KASTKING WARRANTY. It is ridiculous. You have to pay to ship the rod to them and enclose $20, just for them to look at it. If they "determine" that it is defective, they keep your $20 and send another rod. If they say it is your fault, they want 1/2 the price of the rod. So, a $50 Blackhawk replacement would cost $20 (shipping & handling) to get there, $20 (shipping & handling) to send back to you, and $25 (half of rod price). You pay $65 for a $50 rod. If its their mistake, the $50 rod costs you $40. No more Kastking for me. They are a deceptive company.

    Telescopic rods have been in use in Europe for a long time and have cought a lot of big fish. Have their limitations, have their advantages, depending on a fishing style, for some fishing methods they are actually prefered, for example Bolognese fishing. Regarding cheap telescoopic rods, i have been fishing lately with one, have some videos about it online, and plastic is around the insert, while insert is still made from a hard material. They are now wonder, but are super cheap.

    i have always found the telescopic to be very stiff and you cant feel the bite. its also easier for fish to rip the hook out of their mouth since the rod as not springiness/elastic to it.

    I tried a 10’ Chinese inexpensive telescopic and was surprised. It is probably not going to last very long but it did work pretty well. The most amazing thing was how sensitive it was. It is a carbon fiber rod and I have already gotten my money’s worth. I don’t like how long it takes to line up the guides.

    • @christopherjenkins2373
      @christopherjenkins2373 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacklong6614 I don’t know the brand but I know it was a cheap Chinese rod. The reel seat had gold toned metal but half the gold color is gone now. I tried to find it in my garage a minute ago but no luck I remember that you were taking a chance using a 3 oz. weight with it. Anything heavier would tear it up. It is really only able to handle a medium size reel - certainly no larger than a 3000 size. In answer to your specific question I’ve never fished with it more than 4 or 5 times a season. It is still usable after over 2 or 3 years of use.

    Cont... with very dirty water, say 4 - 6" visibility, and although it's good fir ledger fishing for codling, sea-bass, etc... I'm determined to catch fish using lures (fresh baits, or plastics) as it's my favourite method of fishing, even though I've not so much as had a bite so far. The sea is there, the pier is there, I know the fish are there (as they take my ledgered bait), I've got good tackle, lure baits, and time to pursue this, seemingly boondoggling exercise, but so far....
    nothing. So, any ideas on how to fish these in conditions more successfully, as in actually catching a fish? As I said, love your shows, keep them coming, and take care fella. Many thanks. Raymondo.
