This is the third time Saint Therese comes to me today, I mentioned in my rosary group that 2023 marks 150 years of her birth (then I thought about "Word on fire". It occurred to me to watch the film for which I had received an invitation in my mailbox and I read the comment of gratitute where she is mentioned at the end of the video ). A famous phrase of her was also mentioned in a podcast I follow: "I want to spend my Heaven doing good on earth". Beauty will conquer the world. Thank you.

I like seeing modern artists trying to tactfully merge the esthetics and rules of old art masters with modern approach and styles. In my experience, a lot of modern art fails at... beauty and thought, but at the same time I'm a bit tired with works of renassaince or baroque artists, many of them I find repulsive. It's refreshing to see works made by people like Michael Stevens or Chris Lewis (Baritus).
I was very glad until I heard that part of the inspiration was from Jeff Koons. I would understand to use somebody very controversial or even openly anti-Catholic, but to draw from kitsch... well I guess you redeemed him with your creation.
Now I’m always wondering, what if I look at a piece of more modern art and I don’t “get it” or I “get it wrong”. Each piece can take so long to complete, (or not). The Seeing this explanation and dramatization on the man an his art makes me see his art in a more informed state of mind. Now I think I would do well to inform myself on the artist and the work before deciding on whether I like it or not. Especially with religious art-and I am very skeptical of artists who create this form. My skepticism kicks in. Is it respectable, is it accurate of what is being depicted, or is it cheeky-painted by someone obviously not of the faith-whose desire is to mock, confound or inspire others to also share in the artist’s contempt of the religion being depicted. Elephant poop on a painting doesn’t belong-even if a bishop tells me that “in some cultures elephant dung is considered sacred”. (This actually happened.) As with all great art however this painting which is a skillful and intentional blending of the best of both worlds. After seeing it and realizing the pitcher is pouring water and not blue paint (which is what I thought it was meant to be) I was more at ease with it. It is tremendous in its beauty, complexity and the message transcends time. It speaks the Truth, to be sure. Modernists may balk nonetheless. Chesterton would approve of it, as would Shaw.
All who view this painting and watch this film will be able to understand the message. Whether they like the contemporary style will be dependent on their interpretation of this great event. Does it move you to contemplating the true meaning of Pentecost or are you more interested in the process you see and the colors and images? That's what counts in religious art. Does it lift the soul to God? If not, then its only a well done painting using modern technology.
