Especially, if you take into account that The Orville seasons are very short. 36 episodes in 3 seasons. Season 1 of TOS: 29 episodes. TNG and DS9 had ~25 episodes per season. So we basically just had 1.5 seasons of the Orville. Cmon, we'll watch another 200 episodes...

I understand your early reservations about Ensign Burke, but the way I look at it is that she was basically dealing with her own version of what Commander Sisko experienced at Wolf 359. I have a feeling that if Commander Sisko had been on the same ship as Hugh right after that, he probably would have had a massive chip on his shoulder.
Like you, I loved Ensign Burke's arc in 'Domino'. Such a powerful way for that character to go out.
My favorite episode of the season was 'Twice in a Lifetime'. I really liked the way it addressed the issue of staying in the past, with both Mercer and Malloy having solid, understandable points. In the end, Mercer had to be almost cruel to Malloy in order to follow the rules and avoid the possibility of polluting the timeline. It was a tragic ending for Malloy with some very nice nuance that made it hard to completely side with Mercer or Malloy on the issue of remaining in the past.
I'm a little dubious about the episode 'Shadow Realms'. I can easily see the villainous threat being a one-off that's never referenced again (assuming The Orville is renewed for more seasons). It would be the parasite aliens in the TNG season 1 episode 'Conspiracy' or the abducting aliens in the TNG season 6 episode 'Schisms' all over again.
My least favorite episode of the season was 'Morality Paradox'. Pretty mediocre in my view. It could have been really interesting but was let down by a "just kidding, they were never really in danger" ending. Also, I didn't like the jab at spirituality toward the end, as though people who believe in a spiritual deity are somehow lesser than.

I’ve watched the Star Trek franchises since 1969 while in college and all the subsequent spin-off’s and movies, and like all trekker’s loved everything! And then came the Orville; season 1 and two were mildly entertaining but season 3 went well past my expectations!! So much so I can easily say I like it more than Star Trek..,. That’s saying a lot. If they manage to come back for another season, they will be around a long time! Make it happen Seth!!

I think a moment that goes unappreciated in 'Domino' is that Issac, throughout the season, has been very passive and not rising to baits and violence (the closest being Kylden). There were a few moments in the series where I'm looking to Issac to DO something, we know he's very strong and has inbuilt weapons but he never uses them. That's until Ensign gets threatened and he pops open the eye lazers. That hit me in the feels man, I understand it's because he knows she's the only one who can fix the machine so logically needs protecting, but he could have got those out at any time.

    • @NaterTot
      @NaterTot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is true. Even when Klyden tried to stop him, he didn’t resort to violence unless he absolutely had to. Which was much different than what we saw from Primary.

Orville is a sci-fi safe space for people who are comforted by the familiar. Orville literally redid episodes from previous Trek series (like the TOS episode with the wayward generational ship inhabited by people who don't know they're inside a ship; the VOY episode with the planet where time passes more quickly and the arrival of the ship affects the cultural development of the planets inhabitants, etc).and copied characters like Worf and Data. It's basically TNG on a different ship. If that's your thing, more power to you, but the idea that Orville is a "masterpiece" is a huuuuge stretch by any definition of the word. At best, it's an updated reboot of a decades-old. While it's certainly enjoyable at times, it doesn't really bring anything new to the table

  • @stephenfarthing3819

I have been impressed with the third season of Orville - yes, out of necessity a much darker point. But I think that it was not unexpected that it would have done. I believe that Season 4 might add more to this portion. It has given both Discovery and Strange New Worlds' a very stiff competition. I believe that more is still to come. From Orville and Season 4.

I really thought the second episode was uninspired like typical got to ship get inflected bring by infection they could of at least had hazmat suits and decontamination protocols.
Especially given it was clearly an organic looking yet seemly empty/dead it was like watching them explore the ships in Aliens or Species 8472 but more predictable.

I absolutely loved Season 3. Personally, I loved Mortality Paradox, but really just because I absolutely love stories where people are trapped in a world that caters itself to force them to move forward through the pain of it --- Like, Mortality Paradox felt almost like an Orville version of one of the more tragedy-driven Silent Hill games, or maybe Doctor Who's 'Heaven Sent'.
If there was one thing, I don't know if we needed 2 episodes surrounding Topa -- I pretty much loved both A Tale of Two Topas and Midnight Blue, but having them both in New Horizons meant that literally 20% of the episodes were dedicated to Topa's arc. Honestly, I would've vastly preferred if they had these together in the same Season if it were the 14-episode length of Season 2.

  • @RachelAllcock

First episode was excellent. Then we had two so-so ones. And then we had seven in a row that just knocked it out of the park every single time.
And it's not the Captain's job generally to do stuff. It's the Captain's job to ensure that *somebody* does it. They don't make the little decisions and run the ship day-to-day, they're there for the big judgements, the tricky ones. It's also a reflection on how comfortable Ed and Kelly's professional relationships now are that he is happy to delegate so much of the doing to her. And sometimes - the scene where they hide in a gas giant and fake destruction springs to mind - you can see the dynamic switch. Ed has the plan so gives the orders... but as soon as the decisions are done and the path is clear, Kelly starts giving the orders again ("Get us out of here" I think it was!). In Star Trek it'd always be the Captain giving that order, but their command dynamic is much more integrated. You also never see them argue, even when tricky moral points are at issue e.g. how to deal with Gordon. The writers never express dilemmas via an Ed-Kelly argument. Which is why it doesn't feel wrong in the finale - they are comfortable with each other again.
Mind you, in any season 4, Kelly is probably overdue for a command of her own and Ed for a bigger ship. Something JMS said about B5. No officer stays in a post for five years, not unless their career is dead dead dead.

I, for one, loved what they did for the Moclans.
This is a perfect representation of Karl Popper's tolerance principle. You should tolerate different ways of thinking, but you can't tolerate intolerance, or the tolerance will be destroyed. This is also a good indication of how people who are stuck in traditions and prejudice (aka conservatism), it doesn't take much for them to ally with the religious fanatics and xenophobes (i.e. fascists), perfectly represented as the Moclans did what they threatened the Union to do since season 2: Rejoining the Krill in an alliance.

For me it was "Twice in a life time". I really didn't like how harsh their treatment of Gordon was. They erased him and his family with almost no second thought, and the bit where Keyali shows up at the door? it was cold and evil. In every other episode they break/bend the rules and risk annihilation for Topa, Isaac, Kelly...etc, but there? nope. What made it worse is that Ed has repeatedly went against the law stated in the episode about preserving the timeline; like in season 1 with Pria. She told him that they all died and that in order to preserve the timeline they had to go with her, and he didn't.
As a whole though, I LOVED Season 3 and am desperate for more.

Only issue I had with the season opener is that it seems like it should have been shown 1 or 2 episodes after the 2 parter Identity but that was midway through season 2 and there were like 4 or 5 episodes after the Kaylon attack before seasons end and there was no issues with anyone and Isaac. The season 3 opener just seemed out of place cause it's like all is hu KY dory after Identity part 2 but then for the opener to make sense then it would be like the last 4 or so episodes of season 2 never happened.
I hope this makes sense, I guess that to me it was just a. It jarring to seemingly be done with the issue but then go right back into it to start the season.

I absolutely loved season 3, although i have a lot of nitpicks, i don't think any of them detract from how over all good the product was these season! i would say, if there were any episodes i thought could have used another draft, it would have been episode two. the premise was banger, and the foundation solid, i mean, the idea of encountering a Krell "Demon" is so cool!
*Spoilers for episode 2 of season 3*
that they were ultimately just basically spider zombies just felt like a huge let down to me. Although i think space zombies can be a really cool plot, the show might have done better in my opinion, to have just made them actual zombies. As to the demon aspect, when they reveled that, for reason never explained, this region of space has no starlight, i was hoping for something more abstract for the villain. Could have been a great call back to that season one episode, where the doctor says "the gaps between the stars look empty, but there not." (no spoilers, but i recognize why they wouldn't call back to that)

Not sure how everything went down behind the scenes, but it definitely felt like they KNEW this was it, and they did their best to cram every single cool Idea they could think of into 10 short episodes. If this had been a standard 22-episode season of STTNG, for example, Charlie's arc could have developed more slowly... episodes 2 and 3 would have been fine "weekly filler" episodes to sit comfortably around the big plot episodes. As it stood, even though they weren't "bad," they seemed weird and a bit out of place. With only 10 episodes, then. everything feels extremely rushed and action-packed, which can be both a GOOD and a BAD thing.
Don't get me wrong -- I still really enjoyed the season. I wish the show would have had a bit more time to breathe, though. Here's hoping we get more THE ORVILLE at some point in the future.

Here in Brazil its hard find a place talking about The Orville, becouse STAR+ is new streaming service by Disney and becouse is splited from Disney+ so many peaple cant fint this gold.
To me Lammar need show more up (allways beside Isaac) the new girl give me only bad reactions, becouse the actress are to beatifull in her moments, she moments in screen, don fit well. The lines of her character are good, simple enougth to us understud she is a duchbag with a good hearth.
The introduction of figthers are so good to me. This expend the Orville World, and the new props, like Isaac outfit, and the shuttle are some ot the hits of this season.
The end of the season, put us to face machism and religious withe extremist. That clever becouse they question about the Earth Union, ''what is correct?'' in same time when they say ''wee cant just put your laws above that cultures, its easy asking why not becouse both are two bad culture, but if they find one so close the Union in this days, who they can negociate progress?
A so many questions, so many new adventures can come in new Season.

I thought it was a pretty great series overall. The only episode that really didn't work for me was Shadow Realms. It made absolutely
no sense to me that they chose not to wear EV suits while exploring the space station. As I recall, the space station hadn't been explored by any sentient life forms for thousands or possibly millions of years, so who knows what sort of life threatening substances a person could be exposed to. It also didn't make sense to me that the infected admiral wasn't put inside a force field to protect the other crew members from his infection. There was no telling what he could have done! It seems to me that if the characters in your story need to make completely illogical choices just so that the main idea of your story can play out, then you really need to go back to the drawing board and start again to make your ideas play out organically. Lastly, for me personally, I didn't really feel compelled to rewatch many of the episodes from this series. One viewing seemed to be enough for most of them, which is kind of strange for me seeing as this is the only tv show that I actually like at the moment. Oh well, I certainly hope we get a fourth series, that's for sure!

I loved the season overall, but my least favorite episode is Domino. Burke being gay was really obvious (that scene in the shuttlepod gives off HUGE "Mom, Dad, this is my roommate" energy), so I had a sinking feeling in my stomach the entire season that they were going to lean on tired old tropes about gay trauma and burying your gays; and damned if that's not exactly what they did.
I wouldn't have minded as much if they could have at least shown us some of Burke's joy with Amanda in a flashback or something, but nope, it's just another story about a gay person being miserable until death is a bittersweet relief from the agony of life. I don't think it was intentional or malicious, but it's how her story turned out, regardless of anyone's intent.

As much as I liked the show, I have to say the penultimate episode didn't really do it for me. I had several moments that just took me out, even though it was like grand in scale and action packed, it really needed some tweaks.
For one, the Union going in to attack without waiting for the Keylon ships is dumb. Why not go together? Why let so many union ships die for no reason?
Secondly, they join forces with the Keylon and mention that destroying the weapon is very much an option they're considering if they can't recover it, and they even take Keylon Prime with them, but nobody raises the point that once the weapon is gone/destroyed, the Keylon could immediately turn on them and kill them all. Sure the ending mentions this AFTER it's already been done when the Keylon decide to abandon their genocidal ways because they saw self-sacrifice for the cause, but seriously the fact that nobody even brought it up as a flaw in their plan is ridiculous, did they know ahead of time or expect that the Keylon would just not attack the moment the threat to their existence was removed?
Thirdly, I found the union acting a bit out of character. Like, yeah okay they don't want the Keylon to be exterminated because that's genocide and it's wrong, so they want the weapon back, but then they go into a massive scale assault that results in countless deaths just to save the Keylon who very well could've extreminated all of them the moment the weapon is destroyed? It's not like the union to immediately jump to weapons instead of trying diplomatic approaches first, or a more covert/espionage/inflitration approach first. I know they wanted a big setpiece ship battle, but there needs to be a good reason behind those else they become meaningless. You could say, there's no time for it, but they never even bring up any reluctance towards killing Krill and Moklan ships and losing union ships. They're simultaneously anti-genocide/violence and very much going with a full frontal violent approach. As a very wise robot once said "They'll learn of our peaceful ways, BY FORCE!"

I understand the enthusiasm for something one likes. Admittedly, I like The Orville for the most part, its easy on the eyes and a throw back to TNG years gone past. However, let us be clear, New Horizons is a vanity project gone mad! The episodes are WAY too long and over written to excess with multiple effects sequences that repeat themes such as approaching and descending toward planets, the same corridors and attack on a secret station played out twice in consecutive episodes. Then there is the loud musical fanfare which drowns out any hint at nuance. Seth McFarlane essentially removed himself from the season as a character so he could concentrate on directing, it is here where vanity pokes its ugly head with lingering reaction shots for commercial outros, the over use of CG and episodes that could be trimmed by a good editor down 15 or 20 minutes. Laborious viewing is NOT good television. Talk about fan service!

Charly was a welcome voice of dissent among a crew that is always so like minded. Klyden is the worst character and it was a mistake to bring him back with a contrived sudden turn around. He was so behind the Moclan way that he told his daughter to her face he wished she'd never been born and left her, but we're supposed to believe what happened suddenly changed his mind? It would have been more believable had he been a part of the kidnapping and planned murder. They should have let that character go before Charly, but they couldn't have furthered teh story how they wanted if they had done it differently

  • @BrokenNeuron

I did not like Episode 2. I am not a big fan of body horror. The tension of the entire crew potentially being "assimilated" into those creatures was uncomfortable and a bit tramatic. Granted, that was probably what they were going for. It just left a bad taste in my mouth and kept me from watching the rest of the series until the series was over. It also left the end of the episode without a relatively happy ending. Those people who were assimilated are gone. It was a good one off of TNG and the Borg. Hopefully, if they come back, they can skip the body horror when they face them again.
Other than that, 10 out of 10.

"cut the episodes down to 10" - damn that lazy trend. It's _everywhere._ How did we allow that to happen? We just expect, for any show, that it will have fewer than half the episodes shows used to have. And it won't stop there, it'll go down to 6 and 4.

    • @NaterTot
      @NaterTot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t find this lazy, at all. Honestly, quite the opposite. Studios would push for bigger seasons just to have more money and revenue brought in from advertisements. Thus, cutting budget down on episodes. Why so means shows had flashback episodes or episodes that were all shot in one place. Now they can tell a great story without feeling pressured. Not to mention, I believe the prior two seasons were 13 episodes at 42 minutes. I wouldn’t be surprised to see if the ten episodes ran over than those 13 episodes in total runtime.

@@NaterTot The universality gives it away. Everything, large and small, used to be 22-26 episodes. Now everything, large and small, is 8-10 episodes. This is not something reserved for particularly cinematic series.
And getting something renewed is so ridiculously difficult too. Before, you'd make two or three seasons and then decide whether to renew. Now a show has to nail its audience right from what is effectively its first half-season. Lots of great series from the past would have been axed on that condition. And the decision to renew is inevitably so late that the anemic seasons come slower than one per year

I like the graphics you exhibit, alien costume design & it sounds entertaining, but I hate the uniforms, & a couple of the dudes immediately hit me as dork poindexter. It just means that I’m going to have to try, I detest that about a lot of Hollywood. I just don’t see it, so for parts with acting, does it fit the role? I suppose I’m asking too much? Maybe Hollywood would prefer the swoons over Doe from Heavens Gate for easy character sales? So although you might love who put this together with a tip stick bow to their fame, I seriously question their credibility & gravitas for manliness. All that graphic, story plot, costume & alien design & this is the best uniform they could come up with? Clearly the babe’s attraction holds this together. They want to draw me & the kiddy’s in for a sit down in contrast with today’s dynamics to have a sob cry over a robot’s suicide.? Give me a break! Ya know I have a cousins with a wife who suffers ptsd from her a pet dying as a child, dog or cat, but I bet she’d really enjoy that..?

I get it's Hollywood and that GLAAD would be up their ass if there wasn't enough "gay representation", but her character arc would've been just as impactful if she was straight, or if she was saved by just a friend, or a sibling, or a mentor.
