THE ORVILLE 'Future Unknown' Review - How To Take A Bow

  • The Orville season three's finale, Future Unknown was a great conclusion for the season (and potentially, the entire show). The show featured two weddings and plenty of social commentary/allegory seen throughout the series. If this is the conclusion to Seth McFarlane's love letter to Star Trek, it goes out on a high note as one of the best in the entire series.
Please, Renew The Orville. It deserves to be on the air and I hope, hope, Hulu makes the RIGHT decision!

On the 1 hand, I really hope this series gets renewed for a 4th Season since I want to see where the characters and story goes from here. On the other hand, if the series doesn't get renewed at least the story ends on a decent note which is not something many shows can say that wanted/set up 1 more Season but didn't get them.

I gotta say I respect the hell out of Seth Mcfarlane for deciding to end the show in such a complete satisfying way. He didn't exactly close the door on more potential possibilities by any means but he didn't also spend the entire time teasing what could be. More shows could learn from this.

It impressed the hell out of me that instead of ending on the action-packed penultimate episode, they ended with the emotional, 'no conflict' episode. The kind of optimistic sci-fi that was heretofore the sole territory of another franchise. I'm super impressed and can't wait until season 4 (there HAS to be a season 4)

About whether or not this episode is the series finale, it seems obvious as to why the episode is named 'Future Unknown'. Worth a mention, anyway!
Also, they did a better job explaining the whys of the "Prime Directive" than Star Trek ever did.

    • @BlazingOwnager
      @BlazingOwnager 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

They've always handled the prime directive way better than Star Trek. They'll leave it and completely break it if the planet's going to be destroyed which in Star Trek they'll just stand by and watch everyone die. Which helps nobody. They also have a way better metric of when to reveal themselves. I think it helps that he has a much better grasp on the spirit of it and why it exists rather than treating it like a dogmatic religion like the Star Trek writers do.
I'll also give him props for giving the same explanation for why it started as the Tolan from Stargate but without the overwhelming, arrogant and dickishness they had.

The Orville has been the genre-fiction show we need for some time. As the real world feels increasingly bleak; Star Trek stepped in to show us it could always be so much worse. But the Orville stepped in to remind us that we can overcome, and even in it's bleakest moments kept humor alive. I would love to see the show continue. And as for McFarlane; who knew that the person who was most prepared to bring us the kind of fiction we really need was a guy who's rise to fame was on the back of juvenile cartoon fart jokes - but somehow that is the guy who most understands good storytelling.

Great ending on tying up character story lines and the potential of an Ed and Kelly romantic reunion. There were some unfinished stories with the Krill and Moclan society but those are there in case it goes to Season 4. It is good they ended on a character based story with a lot of humour. Disney and Hulu should realize the potential of this series building into a worthy franchise like Star Trek and Star Wars. It is most of the way there, it just does not have the long history of the others. But will they renew?

This was a great review. I have listened to many reviews of the Orville in the last few months. Most have no clue how to do a review as all they did was give a regurgitated version of the story with no insight. And then they were done adding nothing at all. I don't mind if someone doesn't like the show and gives a bad review I may disagree with. As long as they did more then just told the story and then turned off the camera without explaining their position. From this I believe your a rather decent reviewer.

Agreed . what a great show...McFarland has been quoted as saying chances of renewal are about 50/50. What?!! How is that possible? This show has hit very button on every level. One of the things i liked about this episode is when Kelly shows Lysella what happens when you interfere with a planets natural development by giving them technology beyond their understanding.
I liked that it is done in a mature way no way preaching or anything.
Just stating the cold hard truths.
How did this planet get destroyed?
We the union did it, not out of malice or because we wanted to conquer it or anything.
It was done out of ignorance and a wish to be kind.
We saw this planets population had problems, problems that we had learned to overcome, so we wanted to elevate the planets population to our level.
Unfortunately they weren´t ready for it and soon they turned our technology into weapons and used it to destroy one another.
Resulting in the hellscape you see before you now.
Its basically the prime directive from Star Trek but explained in a mature and reasonable way.
Because as others have said what would happen if we went back in time and gave Weapons of mass destruction to a medieval society or showed them how to make and use modern day technology.
Would they be understanding and only use it to defend them selves from attackers or just improve their lives for the better?
Nope they would mostly likely say "Cool now i have all of these new weapons now I am the strongest."
Ohh the neighboring town is rioting and their army is just outside my gate, i´ll just drop the equivalent of a Tzar bomb on them i am sure my city walls can withstand the blast.
Or hey i can mine gems and gold much better... ohh my rivers are now poisoned with chemicals... my drinking water is spoiled.
So yeah giving advanced technology to a species not yet evovled to used it is a bad idea and the show really explains it in a good way.

The very idea that shows like Kenobi and book of Boba Fett, let's never forget also technically Disney properties, are well on their way of getting a second season while this absolutely, sorry Star Wars fans, superiorily written show has not been renewed yet shows how close the mouse house is going full steam ahead with making Fox disappear and that seems so wrong. This is a winner and although I agree this is a perfect series finale. This season shows how much more the Orville has to explore. You would think that Roddenberry RIP would have seen the Orville and thought wow that is what I wish the last four Star Trek movies would have been. Long Live The Orville!

This is the reason ending a season on a cliffhanger is not the best idea. When your renewal is always a question mark, ending each season on a high note satisfies the views and the cast. Besides, this series is a celebration of old-school sci-fi. It should be a happy one.

The latter part of the season saved it, with a return to quirky comedy. All in all, it's the best Star Trek show since Next Gen. Strange Worlds is about a 5/10, all the others are less. The Orville is 10/10 just so much fun, amazing characters, action and stories... I just cannot process why it takes an independent to come along and give us the Star Trek we always wanted after Next Gen finished. I wonder... could Seth pull off a better version of what Star Wars has now become? In any case... I really hope they get a season 4, this show should run for 10 seasons at least... it's simply amazing and I want to see a Kelly/Ed endgame as well.

@@superkoopatrooper4879 LOL I've seen Farscape. It started off bad, but got really good as it progressed. Sadly I don't think enough people stuck around to watch it, because it got good a little too late to save the show. It was fun while it lasted though.

let me compare it to another rather original TV-series that had its series finale fairly recently: the expanse: the last episode of the expanse felt like "wait, what, that's it?" whereas this felt like a true finale.

While i enjoyed the episode, i was hoping for something major to happen like the Krill and the Moclans destroy the Kaylon homeworld which is not as defended as it normally is.
So then season 4 could focus on a Krill and Moclan vs The Union and a weakened Kaylon empire. A war that spans throughout the show similar to the Dominion War on Deep Space Nine.
But if the show does get cancelled at least we have an ending.

If any major cliffhanger plot point was going to happen I was expecting the "Demons" from *Shadow Realms* to return with one of their masters. If there is a S4, they will probably show up at some point, maybe something super powerful, like the Reapers from Mass Effect. What that station in Krill space did is kinda similar to how Reapers create various types of Husks from any organic beings with Dragon's Teeth spikes.

My favorite part about the episode is how they showed the reason why the Union has its own version of the Prime Directive, and it's a powerful one as well; I mean accidentally sparking the nuclear annihilation of an entire planet certainly would do it. Star Trek never really presented the Prime Directive in the way The Orville did, but rather as something that was inconvenient, to the point where it would be broken on a near regular basis, or to create drama to prevent the crew from taking an extremely obvious action.
If The Orville had retained it's more comedic tone from season 1 and got additional seasons I can imagine a storyline where the crew is presented with one of those really dumb Star Trek Prime Directive problems and they'd just go "Of course we interfered, they were all going to die otherwise! ... Wait you were just going to watch them go extinct? What's wrong with you?"

I don't think it will end, mainly because Seth is in the driving seat, not a full corporation, and that has been the danger, when the studio has total control over production. So I think there will be Season 4...

  • @BYERE
    @BYERE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

In regards to this season and how... encapsulated... the season's arc seems to be (ie, tying up most of the loose ends in this final episode), I'm going out on a limb to say that I think they had it planned to be only a single season long when it got the green light.
Despite how popular the show is, and was before this season, it was still rather niche with its fanbase. It's probable that before this season was confirmed, it may have felt a bit like a gamble to renew such a show... and I presume that Seth and co decided when it was greenlit that they would make it the best damn show they possibly could, wrapping up as much as possible in the one season just in case it didn't go down as well as it did and they don't get the renewal.
I'm hoping, given how extremely well received this season has been, it has proven to Disney's execs that a show like this CAN work well in this day and age, and that they don't just guff at the thought of renewing it. I'm hoping that it vastly exceeded their expectations, and it pushes them to make the renewal.

Seth should push for a multi-season contract and to allow for a neat and satisfying conclusion. Star Trek typically does 7 seasons.
Three seasons is just not enough for something of this scale, lore and depth.
Is this what streaming has become? No slow burners and time for world building.

@@NaterTot It was interesting how she wasn’t in this episode but I also got best of both worlds vibe you know how they work sure if Patrick Stewart was coming back for season 4 so helped give them time to figure it out.
The fact that they didn’t say one way or another that she was staying or going made me think that maybe they’re still trying to decide but I was just wondering if anybody else heard it and I just didn’t hear it clearly she was at the wedding making it seem like she was staying but they never explicitly said it after her conversation with the commander in the simulator

I really liked Kelly's explanation of why they couldn't give the replicator. I mean, just think about a company like Electronic Arts having control of a technology like that. Even if using it was completely free, they'd find a way to charge for the IP rights to the point where you'd be paying an extra thousand dollars for something to be painted blue.

From what I have read both Seth and Scott are committed to their Ted project. It's possible they will still bring the show back but without them. Which seems 'not ideal but better than no show. Maybe they will do like a 5 or 10 year jump with Ed being promoted to Admiral (so some appearance possible) Maybe with a time jump the Union will have discovered Transporting. This will save alot of time currently wasted on transport ships. lol.
