M340i
Neither, you should have bought an LC500(if going Lexus) or an M2(if going BMW). =)
Everyone keeps going “but in 15 years blah blah blah”. No one has any idea how the market will look like in 15 years and what cars will actually be considered classics. We have no idea what car enthusiasts will like in 15 years and whether the IS500 will be considered a classic. The V8 sounds nice sure and has some character but the car handles like ass, has an already massively dated interior and the transmission is garbage.
@@cardiacresp I don't care about 15 years. I'm enjoying my IS500 now.
340i. The lexus is for old people. Bmw is for young people to have fun.
While both cars are excellent performance sedans, the IS500's v8 sound is unmatched.

NA V8, reliable, stunning look and rare. You can't be wrong
Excellent car 💪
Rare for a reason
It's Lexus... right from the start. Germans are the h-*@*kerz of cars. Lexus is the lady. ❤
The Lexus is just better to me personally. I could look at that car all day, and never get tired of it. 💙✌️😊
I think they’re beautiful, I drool over them when I see them out and about
Yes for sure 😅😅😅😅,that bmw is full of plastic
Whenever ppl compare Lexus to bmw I always say the same thing, it’s an apple to oranges comparison. Apple to apple would be Mercedes to bmw. Nobody buys a Lexus because they are looking for the most dynamic and engaging ride, even though the Lexus is certainly capable, however not as capable as a bmw. And nobody buys a bmw because they are looking for a reliable car that will last and retain its value. They’re both very different cars. Lexus is for those who want reliability, luxury, build quality, longevity, and high retention value. The bmw is for those who want the most engaging driving experience, fast ride, great technology, and of course, whatever prestige the European brand eludes.
So many people find that hard to understand
Nd let's not forget, the lexus actually turns heads and makes people wow especially when they get into it ......at least mine does lol
@@tommywilson1906Lexus does not do that, unless you’re a car enthusiast (even then only Lexus owners think that, most other car enthusiasts make fun of Lexus by calling it a toyota), the average person thinks like that about BMW’s, Mercedes, Porsche, etc
@@player764not true at all lol Ive owned Audi and bmw and then I got a Lexus . Never going back lol the ride , the comfort. They are not slow ! For daily driving and long ownership they are amazing.
@@scoopsf Not true what? I'm saying Lexus does not turn heads, and trust me, as a owner of a 440i, I get a whole lot more eyes than my friend who I ride with who owns a IS350 F sport. I'm not denying the luxury and comfort of Lexus, but it's just not seen as prestigious as the German luxury/performance brands.
Thank you for such an unbiased review. Great work. A friend of mine has m340 and it's fast. But even after driving it, I still went with the IS 500 and have 0 regrets. They are different cars, but fun in their own way.
hard not to like good cars! both cars here are brilliant and bring their own personality

How you like the IS? I got one coming in June. IS500
Wonderful content!
Can you please do a comparison video between the F80 versus M340?
I am in the market for one of them
@@stonedotdrives I assume you test drove it and know what it is. Downshift hit the nail on the head. The car needs to be pushed to be fun. I had an e92 m3 and missed the V8, so i jumped on this when it came out. It's not as sharp as the M3, but definitely has a character. And a super sexy car. I love mine. One more selling point, it's so unique. No one knows what it is and there are so few of them.
I’ve owned several Lexus vehicles. Including a 2015 IS 350 F Sport. I will always favor them for the long haul. But the M340i would be a lot more engaging. However, that V8 from Lexus is bulletproof. Great video!
B58 is equally as bulletproof

@@hhaste I can’t disagree with you. The B58 is my favorite BMW engine. It’s the only one I would get.
@@hhaste The main worry would be electronics and plastic accessories in the engine bay where BMW is concerned. They've definitely improved compared to the 2000s and 2010s.
Both cars are great, but have different missions. I personally did not want anything turbo’ed or electrified. However, it had to be a luxury car first and a speed demon second. You guys proved in this video that you can’t drive spec sheets, the car has to talk you. These cars are too expensive not to include an emotional component. Thank God there’s something for everyone, thanks for posting! 😎

rcf owner and m340i owner. M340i wins by a long shot as far as performance. Lexus sound & reliability that's about it.
Pretty much yeah

You might have bought the better car but in 15 years more people will be searching the internet for a used IS500. Torque...you can get in any electric car.
Yeah that's the reason. Because people will be looking for used 15 yr old IS500s. Stop it.

Despite loving V8 I'd still probably go with b58. Just as bulletproof and has more modification potential. Lexus V8 reminds of huyndai Genesis 5.0 R Spec obviously faster and lighter
not much faster than genesis r spec
@@b58forever The IS 500 has over 40 extra horsepower and weighs almost 300 pounds less than the Genesis. 0-60 may be only 0.3 of a second difference, but the IS 500 will be faster all the time.
@@b58foreveryou guys have to stop. The 2UR-GSE is miles above a Hyundai V8. I’m not even going to go into detail. The 2jz has more tuning potential than a B58, and cast iron block is stronger than the aluminum B58. Stock block for stock block the B58 isn’t more reliable. 2jz came out 30 years ago. BMW just now gave you guys a solid turbo inline 6 and you guys think a new level has been unlocked . Relax.

If you remotely care about good tech in a car, m340i by a landslide. Was gonna go lexus, but settled on BMW. Simply because the tech in Lexus was bad. Even in a high end luxury car, the lexus has no wireless carplay. It just rubbed me the wrong way and made me realize how dated everything else was in the IS500. I want a car that has the tech I need in a daily driver.
Lexus is dated in general… for the price it’s not worth missing out on modern day necessities. Not to mention the 10k MSRP price difference… M3 would be the competition to the ls500 and it wipes the floor…
Granted if Lexus just made some tweaks to get it up to date it be a amazing competition but otherwise meh
Literally the same for me. Interior was just too dated for how much you spend. If Lexus stepped that up I’d have one.
Put some PS4S tires on both the BMW and the Lexus, and switch out the rear on the BMW for a 255 instead of the 225... BMW will be significantly faster. I love the Lexus 5.0 V8, but after experiencing both cars, the BMW is so much better on handling, it's not even a contest. The Lexus will hold its value better, but honestly, that's about it.
💯
This! I have them on my 500. Makes a HUGE difference. Completely different car with the right tires.
BMW most plastic in engine,no contest Ur rite.not with Toyota..
It's weird I love bmw and lexus. Many people cheer for one brand or the other but I appreciate both for different reasons. The correct answer is both. Although if forced to take 1 it would be the lexus because of the NA V8. I respect lexus for still staying in the V8 game despite the heavy push for ev and engine downsizing.
I have an IS500 but think both are great choices. As you said, it all comes down to the driver's preference. The awd would be a big factor if I needed a winter ready car.

How’s the IS? I got a deposit on one coming in June.
@@stonedotdrives I have one as well. I've had it for about a year and two months and put 11,000 miles on it. It has had no issues and is always a pleasure to drive! And it rides well enough that my wife has gone to sleep in the passenger seat. It's pretty cool to have a car that can tear it up on a back road and make V-8 noises while also being so comfy.
@@ARentz07 that’s what I like to hear man. I hear that everyone that has one loves it. It’s a rare car it seems. You don’t see many and if you do they are sold before they get to the dealer so you can’t test drive really. My dealer tried to get me 3 and all of them sold and were claimed before then. Luckily they got me in with a stock order coming in June.
@@stonedotdrives Nice, good luck with the purchase and whatnot. And yes, it seems like people who know the IS 500 is the car for them are happy with it. The only reason I've even remotely contemplated trading mine is just to experience other cars. But so far, I am not willing to part with it yet. 😂I think we aren't going to get another one of these in the future.
Amazing comparison, been waiting for a direct comparison of the two
glad to be of service
Hi, it's me again lol. Being the rare person that went from a GSF to now an M340i LCI, both cars are great and I'm sure the IS500 is good as well. Other than the V8, I don't really miss the GSF much. The M340i matches (or exceeds) the speed of the F cars in stock form and does it while achieving damn near double the mpg's of the Lexus. Also, obviously the b58 can be easily modded to be crazy fast whereas the Lexus you'd have to spend a lot to be only slightly quicker. Tech is also way better in the M340i
But the m340i has the crappy b58 that burns oil, leaks oil, burns coolant, etc. I want high quality and rock solid. But fragile and cheap where the engine is already leaking oil everywhere and burning oil every week with only 1500 miles on the engine brand new. It's not even hard to decide which one to buy. Only the sheeps and euro junk fanboys would pick the euro junk car.
@@akuragang1990 telling me you never actually owned a B58 without telling me you never actually owned a B58.
Reliability + resale value > everything. IS500 FTW. The m340 will be worthless in a few more years.
As s F owner looking into getting a BMW its a hard choice, but I'd probably get the lexus if I could only have one.
The M340 is just on another level and cannot be touched. The IS500 fair comparison would be a TLX type S, Q50 Red Sport & Genesis G70.
G70? 😂
And yet, they still preferred the IS as a daily. But OK, it can't be touched in all the clout categories.
@@ishmaelmccormick4678 don't sleep on the Genny
Lexus vs Genesis : G70 is much more luxury with a great tech and torgue. I wish genesis had a better dealership situation tho.
Agreed, I think the RS3 is the only thing it really compares to
does the m340i have staggered package or all models come same all around?
I test drove an RC 350 and a M240i both 2017. The transmission was completely absent in the Lexus. We went with the M240i and it is a blast to drive and own. If Lexus provided a proper sport transmission I would have gotten the Lexus for the seats alone. Also, get better tires. Contintental extreme contact sport 02 would work wonders.
FWIW, the IS 500 has a different transmission from an RC 350. In fact, the RC F and IS 500 share the same transmission. It's the Aisin AA80E. The 350 models get the AA81E.
In my opinion the M340i is the superior car in this category (sporty car). With just wider and stickier tires on the M340i alone, that’s going to help it take turns harder, come out of exits harder, stop better, and feel more planted. You’ll also be able to fully take off traction control to put down all of its power, and have it grip with the new tires. Both very awesome cars though!
I‘m about to get rid of the Bridgestones on my new IS500. It’s not a good tire. I have a 2024 that I bought in Dec. Better tires will help.
@@pmiahky That's the first thing any IS 500 owner should do to their car. I put some Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02 tires on mine, and wow, what a difference. It actually puts the power down now.

Really good review. Finally a review where IS500 is being compared to its most direct rival. Funny thing is, the m340i weighs 3900+ lbs like the IS500 so it so not lighter on paper. I think IS500 did well. Being an RCF CF/TVD owner and having driven the IS500, chassis and suspension are way softer,. RCF feels way more stiff and has a heavier and more direct steering in SPORT+ so Lexus made it an F-Sport for that reason where it is mildly more tuned than my IS350 F-Sport and all about the V8, but like the m340i it does not have great ties either. It ran a faster lap time. I understand the argument about the m340i tires, but the point I an making, the IS500 would benefit greatly likewise from much better tires as well. Ideally, both cars should be tested with the same tires. Anyways, I think the IS500 did very well
I would take the lexus IS500 over 340m. Are you kidding me?
I bought the 2023 Lexus IS 350 F Sport RWD last year. I was really tempted to get the IS 500 but those are $15k+ more but I love the 350. It drives so well and it's smooth and the take off is so nice! I got the Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 with white interior. Absolutely stunning 🔥
How's your mpg and range? I really like the 350, but with 28 highway mpg, it seems a bit low for a V6. I have a long commute and was wondering if it's practical.
@aliraad9515 I average between 21-23 mpg combined. If you drive more on the highway then you get more. My range on a full tank shows 330 miles. I mean I don't mind it since I try to take it in the highway the most whenever possible. But, the drive is amazing and smooth and so nice. The sound of pure NA V6 especially on sport mode is 🔥 This car isn't built for mpg so if that's what matters most to you then I would explore more but if you want decent mpg and good drive then for sure go for it. You should test drive one. For me, as long as I get above 20 mpg combined I'm happy.

IS500 is nice with the NA V8 but BMW's highly praised B58 3.0 I6 is magic :) Smooth, effortless, powerful and frugal on fuel. Used in big SUVs like the X7 to Supra sports cars. It's so versatile to be fast yet a family hauler. Reliable and amazing :) I say M340i because it's got a gem of an engine and the car has the better chassis - 2018-2019 with numerous updates. The IS is OLD - 12 yrs old and very dated.
It's a bit strange how "better" the struct suspension on M340i actually is, vs double wishbone on IS. I have B58, it's powerful but a bit boring, not much rumble and not very high reving. My B58 also pop and crackle which makes it more interesting.

The IS500 is actually 2”longer than the IS350, so it’s more than a hood difference. I really love the IS500, but c’mon at least wireless CarPlay! And then many complaints about the transmission. That said, a far more special car than any NEW BMW and I say that has a long-time BMW owner who has had close to 30 cars with Roundel’s on them.
225 section tires all round woahhh that is slim in my x drive config m340i i got 225 fronts and 255 rear.. im sure the bmw would post a wayyy better time had it had wider cross section tires
I save you the time...he got the wrong car.
500 FTW.
Pick the bmw for lawnmower exhaust sound pick Lexus for bulldog V8 sound. (Modified ofc) XForce with muffler delelete pals
As a also B58 G chassis owner i have to admit that the m340i is like an emotionless power machine but the is500 is much more characteristic
M340i is better in every single way. Yall say the lexus is more luxury but the bmw interior looks way more modern and its tech is so far ahead. Those facts alone would make it more luxury to me.
Disagree reliability and resale value is king. I could wait for the 1m340i in 2 years and see it more then 30% off its retail price. Try finding a 2008 isf for under 30k rn.
@marcelrodriguez2067 man I want to buy a car and it bring me the most joy possible. BMW is clearly the better drivers car and the b58 is the most renowned engine in the car community rn. Super reliable aswell. Also think the m340i looks alot better inside and out. Ur thinking alot down the road. I'm thinking what is more fun ... not what could or might happen down the line.
@user-my4xu4gf1z personally i think the lexus looks better but i do agree if you like racing and that kinda stuff then nothing wrong with the bmw but i personally like a balance of reliability luxury, and some sport. The first 2 being a priority.
Lexus interior build quality, fit and finish, and firm quality is what should be considered more luxurious. Your BMW just gonna be creaking over time over the slightest pressure of touch on interior pieces, Mercedes and Audi has that the worst I don’t understand how that’s consider leading in class luxury lmfao but go ahead and believe the painting. I had a 1999 LS400 with 238k mi and at my job we had to safety inspect a couple Mercedes and Audi’s bmws all 2017-2021 and the interior build quality and fit and finish is a fucking joke. Overpriced over-engineered pieces of shits. They literally creaked and had worse quality than my pos 25 year old Lexus. Seriously
I had an X1 as a loaner recently while my wife's X3 was getting a sunroof issue fixed. Yeah, the X1 was newer and fresher looking than our X3, but it was NOT more luxurious. The materials felt cheaper. Ambient lighting and big screens does not mean luxury.
One will be worth much more than the other in 2 years.
An M3 Wheel and tire package with a tune would make that 340 amazing. That IS will last forever and has a DOHC Lexus V8.....you can't go wrong.
IS500 is so damn close to being an iconic car. Lexus just needs to open up the budget a wee bit. Get that interior a refresh, better infotainment and more backseat controls. Yet I'd bet as quick as those cars move off the lots it's not a huge profit margin for Lexus. Damn shame that. I debated one so long, yet the epic engine, design and performance was not enough to sway me. The outdated interior and transmission woes overruled the want for that engine.
M340i xDrive is a beast. The B58 is an icon. Add wider, and lighter wheels from Apex with better tires, along with a midpipe to open the decent sounds of the B58 and you have impressive levels of performance. Levels where you wonder if the M3 juice is really worth the squeeze.
Sadly I ended up going with an SUV instead of a sport sedan. Fortunately the X3 M Comp I did snag ain't a slouch. lol
Thought this was the IS350 F sport at first. Any reason you chose the 500 instead of the 350?
the 500 is a much closer rival to the M340 on price and performance

Lexus 5.0 v8 all day!!!
BMW is ranked very reliable. That old narrative is gone. The Lexus tech is ancient. Lexus is not a luxury brand. It’s a Toyota. Acura is a Honda. Audi is a VW. Infiniti is a Nissan. Genesis is a Hyundai. BMW is a BMW.
I put my money on the IS 500 better looking better reliability than the BMW
The engine in the m340 is the same as that in the TOYOTA supra, the engine is so good that even Toyota had BMW manufacture the Supra, basically a Z4
@@MrWilander88 that engine is a POS. The ONLY reason why Toyota used that motor was for cost savings to bring the Supra back. Otherwise, the car would've cost an arm and a leg if Toyota had to develop the motor from scratch. Something you boyracers wouldn't comprehend.
@MrWilander88 NO you sheep. Toyota used that motor to save money on research and development. Otherwise the new Supra would've cost almost twice as much. That b58 motor is junk. Leaks oil, burns oil, burns coolant, etc., all with only 1000 miles brand new. Something you boyracers wouldn't understand.
IS500 is also 2" longer upfront and 1.3" wider in the rear. So, not the exact dimensions of an is350
Hello from the Midwest! Supra here!
Time to do the RCF vs ???
Is 500 fore sure, bouta get one soon
I'm guessing that BMW still has the factory all season run-flats? That's why it's doing what it's doing. Put some pilot 4s or even cup 2s on it. Then let us know how you feel.
100% - did an update video with performance tires on and shaved close to 3 seconds off the lap time (video on the channel)
@@dwnshft I'll be checking that out. Thanks for the content. You've got a sub.
I went with 2021 m340i cpo ceritifed at 9k miles. No brainer
Why does m340i have 225 all around? The rear should be 255😢
X3 has 245/275 with X3M at even wider
The is500 reminds me of the Mercedes E500 in sleeper kinda way
Sup matt. been watching you since 2023. do you and paolo live together?
Thanks for the support! Lol no we each live with our wives
Considering the intro sounds like a 2UR GSE banging off the rev limiter, I think the BMW already lost. It may have won on track but the Lexus will win hearts.
lol sharp ear!
In this match up and as my main car it would hands down be the Lexus. For a toy or second car I would be in a whole other category.
You can't beat BMW on handling..only on reliability !!
Weight distribution on the BMW is 52/48. The Lexus is 56/44.
The Lexus IS500 is a future collector’s car that will make it to 500k miles easily with its NA non stressed engine and bulletproof build quality. It will still be on the road years after the bmw is rusting in some junkyard.
M340i. Willing to pay higher maintenance costs.
is not a big deal m340i are super reliable i have mine for a year it have 50k miles and is being bullet proof that unlike the q50 redaport i have i had to replace the transmission twice and the car was stock what a pos car that q50 😂
They are running 225 run flats on the M340 and it was only 1 second behind lmfao
Im at home researching on these two cars until i found your video lol
nice!
The F1 sound effect triggered me so hard.
I would'nt swap my IS F for either 😉🏁
IDK. It's tough. I really like the IS, but the M340i is just a great car. Yet, the Lexus is obviously a better car, and I feel fantastic in it. Something about the BMW just feels off when I'm in it. But for the same price ... man it's hard. The Lexus is just missing some interaction, performance, and guts, which is why I'd get the BMW, but would need to trade it back in after a few years. I think if I were like 48 year-old + that I'd take the Lexus because more likely to keep it longer, more focused on taking it easy and just cruising around. I personally love the IS, but it's a little boring.
They're both cool cars, but the BMW definitely has the "it factor". It's the perfect balance between fun and function.
Wont be as reliable or hold its resale value more then the lexus, watch in 10 years.
An m3 has the it factor. An m340i has the mehhhhh factor.
The Lexus is for Boss Men who like luxury and high quality. The BMW is for boyracers who like cheaply built crap (even though the Lexus is faster at the track). Pick your weapon.
IS500 will be worth it forever
IS500 all day!
