  • Skiing the famous 'Le Tunnel' Black run in Alpe D'Huez on Wednesday 15/03/2017.
    Small mistake turns into massive 150m-200m fall/crash. Filmed from my point of view.
    Injury sustained: torn rotator cuff on right shoulder
    Filmed by Dan M using: GoPro Hero 4 @ 1080p x 60fps. Mounted to helmet.

      If you use ski poles, you HAVE to learn the maneuver called "Self-arrest". This can potentially save your life and that of others (by avoiding high-speed collisions), and at the very least minimize your injuries (and that of others) by a TREMENDOUS amount. Every human being operating anywhere close a mountain slope should know that skill, just like the first thing you're taught when skiing for the first time is "how to stop".

I managed to ski it 3 out of 4 goes, though!

    Its good that people post their falls. respect to you for doing so. Here, in my opinion the mistake was to be in too much of a hurry. You should have left the woman in a green jacket and blue backpack (in a standstill position at second 51) move on before engaging in the turn which you were unable to complete. If she was not there, you would have had the space she occupied to go to and you would have been calmer because you would not have had to also think about avoiding her. Patience is an underestimated art in skiing.

    If this happens, flip on your stomach and try to get to a kneeling position. Dig your toes into the snow. Push yourself up with your hands. Your toes will dig in and your surface area will be sharply reduced by getting most of your body off the snow and concentrated on your knees and toes. Your knees will take a pounding, but you'll stop as long as you're not on ice or very hard hardpack.

Tomahawking down the slope is way worse!

    I have no clue how hard this is ? What can you compare it to, like a double diamond glade ?

    • @nihonihon
      @nihonihon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's always hard to compare, as depending on the resort a run might be deemed difficult or not. Here there are several "black" runs, which are the hardest, and this one is the hardest of them. Before entering the tunnel you see a big "danger" sign in 4 languages, then just at the entrance "recall: very difficult slope", then a bit before the end of the tunnel on the right you see a plaque for someone who died years ago on that slope.
      It seems it's a 35° incline, which may not seem much, unless you're at the top of it. This is not a difficult slope for a good skier, but make a mistake and you'll slide to the bottom...The problem is that nowadays not that good skiers go there, meaning there's a crowd at the top, and they all go down the exact same path, packing all the snow and making a slippery path. I used to always try to turn left as soon as possible. A long time ago, it was even sometimes possible to exist the tunnel in front, straight into the slope, instead of turning right, if there was enough snow.
