Climbing down is more difficult because when you get down there is tremendous strain on your legs also there is constant fear of falling down so you need to maintain your grip. Also mountains like these have many crevices and faults which are easier to navigate when climbing up

Also you are already exhausted when climbing the summit thus conserving energy becomes more critical while climbing down. Climbing down from heights around the alpine tree line is not a big deal but it's k2 climbing down here is certainly more difficult in either terms of energy consumption or the risks that climber has to face.

The good thing about K2 is that it doesn't require supplement oxygen every time. Because weather in this karakoram region is mostly not harsh as compared to nepal tibet region. If you notice closely, most of the summiters doesn't carry oxygen tank also there is low windgusts so that you can breathe the thin oxygen.

For the ones who do not know: K2 makes Everest look like a walk in the park. You can pay $100,000 and get a guide and 2 sherpas that will carry your gear, cook, set up your tent and lines to the summit of Everest. Nobody, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY will take you to the top of K2. Only experts, in top olympic athlete level physical condition and determination can summit K2, and only if the mountains allows it. 1 out of 4 climbers never get off that mountain. What this man did is unreal! How come this was not front page everywhere?
It's not frontpage news because climbing Mt. Everest is too common and cliche' these days, a commercial (Red Bull) and egotistic display rather than nature exploration.
To be fair, the 1 out of 4 stat is misleading. For every four people that summit there's one death on the mountain, but most people that climb on K2 neither summit nor die. They turn back and usually make it home safely. Doesn't make this achievement any less impressive though!
I think he got a little help (remember Redbull give you wings 😋)... Or Maybe he just got up (most of the traject) in a helicopter... Going down that many meters in those conditions seems insane 🤯 so: Great achievement anyways!!! 👏👏🙌

@@Phamtom020 Helicopters don't fly that high except for one exception on Everest I believe once (in a heavily modified helicopter that couldn't carry much more than itself and the pilot up), that altitude is a normal cruising altitude for a passenger jet.

I've climbed K2 And Annapurna. Everest doesn't interest me in the slightest. This guy is killer, but he could have killed others on the Mountain that day and he would have been held responsible for his actions.

To put this in perspective: it takes weeks to reach the summit of this mountain. Almost one in four people die during this climb and only 377 people have ever made it to the top. Then you have this madlad who decides to ski down it. An amazing achievement although I must add it was reckless considering there were so many people below him. He could have easily triggered an avalanche, something the K2 mountain is notorius for.
in the video you can see him saying "snow go right side" hes purposefully skiing down the fall line from the climbers, if an avalanche is triggered it will safely go down the side of the mountain, with all the climbers already above it
One climber died on the day he attempted this according to the wikipedia list... Really puts things in perspective, the same day an astonishing achievement was made, someone else lost their life on the same mountain.

i don't know if he considered dying, he was trying to do this gic a yeare earlier and he quitted (i don't remember why) as well 2 years ago he wanted to ski everest but quitted as well as there was a hanging serac on a kumbu fall so looks like he won't take any risc whatsoever and i do believe he is a human, he just loves what he do and masters things to perfection

That’s insane! This guy climbed up the hardest peak in the world without supplementary oxygen, drank a Red Bull on the top without showing strong evidence of being exhausted, and went down on his skis, even in the steep parts and in the crests! Awesome!!

The base camp at k2 is 18,000 feet, he might have been flown in to the base of the mountain. But that's it. There's only one way up mountains in the Himalayas and that is walking, if they had a really high altitude chopper they could maybe get him to camp one, but I highly doubt it.
This is simply insane. Not skiing down, but climbing up. Every time when I carry my ski gears and walk in the ski resort, I feel tired very soon. Considering this is K2, the most deadly mountain, and he reached to the summit with ski gears on his back, I cannot imagine how difficult that is.
No there’s no way he got there climbing with a pack pack and ski gear not to forget the gear you need to climb, and he was all alone, and was asking questions about the location of the first camp, he got there on a helicopter 100000%.
@@zerubeus helicopters literally can’t fly that high up and they don’t even offer heli evacuations off k2 unlike one of Everest base camps where they can fly to. You need to look into this mountain or just check out what helicopters are capable of and you’ll realize this is 100% legit.
The last video I watched, there was this guy telling how extraordinarily difficult it is to ascent to K2, people die every year, death valley and blah blah blah.... a video later, this guy is skiing down like he's in his grandma's backyard. Insane.

Absolutely love the vibe. Very pleased with the general moving away from flashy photography and pumpy music in outdoor adventure videos - the type of people who are truly interested in and inspired by this type of feat are not the type who want flashy videography. We want pure experience, to feel it the way the athlete feels it. The lack of music and constant sound of his breath creates such a tense atmosphere which of course is nothing compared to what he is experiencing, but at least we get a glimpse. Thanks so much!
Red bull videos have traditionally been about glorifying adrenaline junkies and making them look like gods, but there is a growing market for suffer/exhaustion junky videos with a more human component.

It’s physically impossible to ski down the entire way from the summit that’s why there are a lot of edits (just one example are the unavoidable rock bands plus then there’s the traverse at the bottleneck). He should get a lot of credit for skiing down the majority of the mountain but it’s a little misleading saying he skied the entire way

One of the most amazing and breathtaking things ever done and filmed in history. This is as impressive as Honnold's free solo of el Capitan, one mistake and it's over.
It is even more impressive if you know that he climbed K2 summit, alpine style, without supplemental oxygen and with skis on his back. Bargiel is one of the strongest and the fastest skialpinist/himalaist in the world.
At about 7 or 8 minutes when he reaches a checkpoint and says “I need to catch my breath” was such a tense moment. Despite this man’s body being made of titanium, you could still feel the wear-and-tear of the mountain really getting to him. I can’t believe this happened. Very inspirational.
Climbing the hardest mountain in the world only to ski down on that type of snow/ice is unreal! Let alone the oxygen deprivation, cliffs of insanity, picking a line that you pray doesn't break away. This is one of the greatest sports achievements in history, akin to Alex Honnold free climbing El Capitan. My hats off to you sir!

Impossible to climb k2 with without oxygen and carrying a backpack that size with all the ski gear and climbing gear, and find yourself all alone at the summit, he got there on a helicopter, all those who climbed k2 without o2 did it a alpine style and are spending much time on high altitude + 5k so the body adapt to low o2 lvl.

This is incredible. First of all to do anything at the summit without oxygen is a feat in itself, and then to descend on skis is just amazing. Now it looks kinda slow and not so exciting to watch, but if you know anything about K2 and skiing then you realize how difficult and dangerous this is as controlling your speed of descent on such a steep mountain is nearly an inhuman feat of athleticism. It would be so easy to lose control and one single slip would mean almost certain death as there is no way to arrest the fall once the momentum picks up and many of the sections are nearly vertical. Other sections are on ridges with nothing on either side except ice or rock cliffs mere inches from his skis. There is another documentary called Zabardast which features a multinational team of skiers and snowboarders trekking through the himalayas and climbing up some other insane peaks to be the first people to make descents on skis and snowboards that is absolutely incredible to watch.

Fredrick Ericsson attempted to be the first to ascend and ski down K2 in 2010, he never made the summit, he died on the ascent when a rock dislodged and he fell to his death. More than 10 years later what he attempted has been done, RIP Fredrik Ericsson, and props to who's achieved this.
worth mentioning Michele Fait tried aswell in 2019 and died on the way down. Respect to all of these humans for trying. Apologize for answering this 3 years later but I would love none of these guys to be forgotten

Hans Kammerlander is the guy who was the first to descend high altitude Mountains with skis in the 70ies or so. He describes in an interview that this style of skiing is the shitties and ugliest «You will never win style points with high-altitude skiing» 😂
Unfortunately, as some of people in the comments point out, not all of those climbers had the chance to drink some beer and chill with Andrzej afterwards- Kojiro Watanabe fell during the descent in the Bottleneck not long after this video was taken.
What's impressive is he managed to climb the mountain carrying snow ski's & hauling around balls of steel. This is probably the most incredible thing I've watched someone do on TH-cam.

The other day, I watched a Japanese National ski down Mt. Everest. The National just took off down Everest with skis and a parachute to slow him down. (He crashed and survived) This dudes ski down from K2 was slow and measured. That’s why he was successful.

One of the most insane things I've ever seen. I was almost too scared to watch. And seeing him do the Messner traverse had my heart in my throat. There were only a few scenes where you could really get the depth of the steepness. And it was like that all the way down. From the top in the clouds to the lower end where the snow turned hard had me on the edge of my seat. An absolutely amazing feat. Glad he made it!
In my very limited experience of skiing, ski slopes look a lot steeper to you when you are on them than they look to the camera. I think it is hard to tell from the video how steep the mountain slope truly is and I think it is a lot steeper than it looks.

he did not summitted the mountain he went to a 3rd or 2nd camp and descended.

To put this in perspective: it takes weeks to reach the summit of this mountain. Almost one in four people die during this climb and only 377 people have ever made it to the top. Then you have this madlad who decides to ski down it. An amazing achievement although I must add it was reckless considering there were so many people below him. He could have easily triggered an avalanche, something the K2 mountain is notorius for.
in the video you can see him saying "snow go right side" hes purposefully skiing down the fall line from the climbers, if an avalanche is triggered it will safely go down the side of the mountain, with all the climbers already above it
One climber died on the day he attempted this according to the wikipedia list... Really puts things in perspective, the same day an astonishing achievement was made, someone else lost their life on the same mountain.

That’s insane! This guy climbed up the hardest peak in the world without supplementary oxygen, drank a Red Bull on the top without showing strong evidence of being exhausted, and went down on his skis, even in the steep parts and in the crests! Awesome!!

The base camp at k2 is 18,000 feet, he might have been flown in to the base of the mountain. But that's it. There's only one way up mountains in the Himalayas and that is walking, if they had a really high altitude chopper they could maybe get him to camp one, but I highly doubt it.

No there’s no way he got there climbing with a pack pack and ski gear not to forget the gear you need to climb, and he was all alone, and was asking questions about the location of the first camp, he got there on a helicopter 100000%.
@@zerubeus helicopters literally can’t fly that high up and they don’t even offer heli evacuations off k2 unlike one of Everest base camps where they can fly to. You need to look into this mountain or just check out what helicopters are capable of and you’ll realize this is 100% legit.

It’s physically impossible to ski down the entire way from the summit that’s why there are a lot of edits (just one example are the unavoidable rock bands plus then there’s the traverse at the bottleneck). He should get a lot of credit for skiing down the majority of the mountain but it’s a little misleading saying he skied the entire way

Climbing the hardest mountain in the world only to ski down on that type of snow/ice is unreal! Let alone the oxygen deprivation, cliffs of insanity, picking a line that you pray doesn't break away. The messner traverse section was nerve wracking to watch. Skiing down that serac was very technical.
I can't imagine how many insane micro adjustments he had to make every second. The snow is so variable at that altitude and exposure. The amount of mental focus required to ski that is beyond comprehension. His heartbeat must've been a solid 180 the whole way down.

Impossible to climb k2 with without oxygen and carrying a backpack that size with all the ski gear and climbing gear, and find yourself all alone at the summit, he got there on a helicopter, all those who climbed k2 without o2 did it a alpine style and are spending much time on high altitude + 5k so the body adapt to low o2 lvl.

This is incredible. First of all to do anything at the summit without oxygen is a feat in itself, and then to descend on skis is just amazing. Now it looks kinda slow and not so exciting to watch, but if you know anything about K2 and skiing then you realize how difficult and dangerous this is as controlling your speed of descent on such a steep mountain is nearly an inhuman feat of athleticism. It would be so easy to lose control and one single slip would mean almost certain death as there is no way to arrest the fall once the momentum picks up and many of the sections are nearly vertical. Other sections are on ridges with nothing on either side except ice or rock cliffs mere inches from his skis. There is another documentary called Zabardast which features a multinational team of skiers and snowboarders trekking through the himalayas and climbing up some other insane peaks to be the first people to make descents on skis and snowboards that is absolutely incredible to watch.

Fredrick Ericsson attempted to be the first to ascend and ski down K2 in 2010, he never made the summit, he died on the ascent when a rock dislodged and he fell to his death. More than 10 years later what he attempted has been done, RIP Fredrik Ericsson, and props to who's achieved this.
worth mentioning Michele Fait tried aswell in 2019 and died on the way down. Respect to all of these humans for trying. Apologize for answering this 3 years later but I would love none of these guys to be forgotten

What's impressive is he managed to climb the mountain carrying snow ski's & hauling around balls of steel. This is probably the most incredible thing I've watched someone do on TH-cam.
The weather was amazing, the drone footage is amazing and I got so tense watching his decent from camp 3. One false move could easily have been the end of him after accomplishing so much. Congratulations Andrzej !

The other day, I watched a Japanese National ski down Mt. Everest. The National just took off down Everest with skis and a parachute to slow him down. (He crashed and survived) This dudes ski down from K2 was slow and measured. That’s why he was successful.

One of the most insane things I've ever seen. I was almost too scared to watch. And seeing him do the Messner traverse had my heart in my throat. There were only a few scenes where you could really get the depth of the steepness. And it was like that all the way down. From the top in the clouds to the lower end where the snow turned hard had me on the edge of my seat. An absolutely amazing feat. Glad he made it!
In my very limited experience of skiing, ski slopes look a lot steeper to you when you are on them than they look to the camera. I think it is hard to tell from the video how steep the mountain slope truly is and I think it is a lot steeper than it looks.
Have binged watched K2 related documentaries lately and vast portions below camp 4 have a 60-70% inclination. Unreal.
